I do believe there was a guy who played in a band I like called the travelling willburys who used to play in the Beatles Ed πŸ˜‚

Enjoyed that Ed.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate, did he do the voice of Thomas Tank? I only really know that one and Lennon because me dad always looked the spit of him when I was a kid.}

10 Dec 2018 22:22:56
Ha no that was ringo star, I remember Lennon and the other guy who was more famous for his deceased wife’s veggi sausages. The travelling willburys were the fourth beatle George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom petty and Roy Orbison. I bet ed01 senior was a lady’s man then. Are you not from Liverpool? Or just a Liverpool fan or have I got that awfully wrong πŸ˜‚.

{Ed033's Note - Ed001 is from Liverpool.

Made me think back to growing up with the likes of Bertie Mee, Don Revie, Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and the best EVER manager Bob Paisley.

My first memory of watching a game was my gran and grandad letting me get up again to watch a Leeds United game in black and white on their TV. I’m sure it was one of those Inter Cities Fairs cup games they played in the evenings.

Not that I’m old or anything! πŸ˜‚ great read by the way. πŸ‘πŸΌ.

{Ed001's Note - growing up? Ah come on mate, you aren't fooling me, I have met you, you would have been late 50s when those days happened..... ;-)

11 Dec 2018 07:44:55
That first game would have been on sports night with Harry Carpenter Stoner :-)
Great Article Ed001 mate, really enjoyed that and of course you are right that for every generation the old days were the good old days where the Politicians told the truth and people pulled together more and you cold jack your job in at 10am and have a new job by dinnertime.
The travelling Wilburys! " Everybody needs somebody to lean on " With Roy the boy stealing the show, now there was a band you don't get the likes of today :-)

{Ed001's Note - I am so glad for this Arsenal site, the moment I feel old I can just come on here and I suddenly feel young again.}

You are but a young whipper snapper yet Ed001 mate,
Look after your knees, you'll miss them when there gone and WEAR SUNSCREEN:-)

{Ed001's Note - yes grandad!}

Yes that was it 62, far better memory than me! πŸ€ͺ

And Ed01 mate, πŸ–•πŸ˜‚.

{Ed001's Note - oh that's not very nice!!}

11 Dec 2018 09:03:47
And Match of the day with only two games per show Stoner? And one of them was quite often a second division game :-)
I'm not sure if it was better or worse for it, it seemed brilliant at time but memory can often be better than reality, I was flicking through the TV chanels a couple of weeks back and found the Invaders on some strange free view channel and thought brilliant, but some things are most definitely better left to memory :-)

I know mate, how times have changed! πŸ˜‚

It’s like when you watch a film you loved when you were a kid, see it now and think really.

To be fair some of the not so old films now look so dated with modern tech, I’m half way through the new blade runner and it makes the original 82 version look like it was made in 62!

I thought you knew I wasn’t nice Ed01 mate. πŸ€ͺπŸ˜‚.

It's weird mate i know, times change quickly, I was watching fools and horses a little while back and some of the dialogue just wouldn't be allowed now on mainstream TV today and Friends too would have to be censored, and some of those episodes were only in the 2000s!
Mind you to me a snickers bar will always be a marathon and don't even get me started on Starbursts, opral fruits if you please! :-)

My sister was the channel changer, I was the antenna, I got to stand on the chair and hold the antenna so we could get reception. Unfortunately the only good spot was above the TV, so I didn't get to watch anything.

In the 70s like most people we had a black and white telly with a round click dial for changing chanels much like today's washing machines have, there were only 3 chaneld bbc1 bbc2 and itv, our dial broke leaving us stuck on BBC 2 per permanently,
Wow we really looked forward to Monday nights at 9pm and watching Alias Smith and Jones, it made such a change from the open university :-)

Gunner, i can remember the time we used to sit and watch the radio before we had a telly. Jimmy clithero and steptoe and son, on a sunday afternoon. Them were the days.

In reply to the post down the page about whether it matters that we can match Utd etc for the top names or just find gems, I got drunk and forgot I had posted! πŸ˜‚ Really if we want to be competing for the title we have to be able to buy some top players that you know will just come in and be ready straight away. With the gems, there's more element of risk that they are not ready or they don't make the difference otherwise their price would be higher. For every guendousi or Torreira there's an asano, perez, elneny, gabriel who aren't going to make the grade and you're stuck with for a while. Equally we've been heavily linked to players who would of been phenomenal bargains yet never took the risk for whatever reason van dijk at celtic, manolas at olympiacos, alderwierld before going to Southampton spring to mind, but hopefully that was just the old scouting team and it will all change now.

To be fair we have paid upwards of Β£50 million for a player so we will spend a fair bit.

I think United is probably a poor example to give as they get mugged off for every pony going and that clown Woodward seems happy to keep paying it in fees or wages.

I’d like to think our lot are way smarter than that and City and Liverpool generally pay more realistic fees as do Chelsea now and get far better players for their money, well if you forget about Morata and Bakayoko! πŸ˜‚.

Equally though Eden mate for every mega money signing that lives up to their price tag there are 2 that don't.
There is no guarantee because if there were Pogba would be in the running for the PFA player of the year instead of sat on the United bench and Mesut too come to that.
It's easier to identify proven talent which is why they come at such a premium price but surely that's why Sven is here. We don't have United or City financial resources so we have to find another way and when you look at the likes of Kante Torreira Mahrez to name but 3 players no one had herd of before they were linked to premier league clubs but are now A listers in the premier league.
Us fans like our club to sign players we know about and can instantly excited about seeing in an Arsenal shirt, it's only natural but in reality is all about what they deliver in the shirt that matters long after the price tag has been disregarded.

I know things haven't gone well recently for them but Southampton seeded to have a good system in place a few years back, I think it was Les Reid who explained they were constantly on the look out for a replacement manager, full back, striker and every other part of the team just in case they lost the ones they had so they were ready to go if needed, proactive rather than reactive if you like, and for a while it worked well for them.
I think smarter planning smarter scouting and smarter coaching and management will see us bridge the financial gap in the coming years and who knows people might be using the Arsenal way as a model for success again really soon :-)
Well if we can't dare to dream now when can we :-)

Utd and Citeh have spent similar amounts in the last few years. The difference in football quality is universes apart. The coach plays a big part in the way a team/ player performs. Pep is getting the best out of his team, maureen is actually holding them back. Money certainly helps, no question but the coach and back up is just as important.

Guys not been on much I'm the last 8 months or so. But so glad for the change and once again enjoying watching us. Can't really fault anything.

Few more windows and I am sure emery will have his team sorted.

Have a good Christmas and New year also to Wenger I'm sure he is enjoying the chilled TV work and his life once again.

Have a good one people xx.
