Nice to hear Santi say he is staying

12 Aug 2014 00:19:54
Absolutely.

If he plays the way he did in his first season, it could be the catalyst for a major title challenge.

Agree0 Disagree0

+1 here.

I first watched him on the screen in Mork and Mindy. "nano nano nano"

I'm sure he wasn't in it, lol.

Hi Eds,
Just a quick one, has Arsenal completely dropped their interest in Bender? Not reading any paper talk on him lately.

Daley Blind anyone? Sounds like a braille newspaper to me!

Nah, let Liverpool sign him and make him Captain.

Than, it will be the blind leading the blind. :-)

Isn't he one of the 17, 432 players that Manchester United are trying to sign?

Thank you TJ

1 down and 2 to go, Chelsea and Liverpool you are up next! We never forget a face ;-))

Agree0 Disagree0

Joined in with the fantastic team name of The Big Podolski haha

Agree0 Disagree0

We own Liverpool one in their own back yard. Especially after last seasons humiliation 5-1 (4-0 after 20mins)

I for one am sick of BT sports advert of it!

11 Aug 2014 21:13:44
It's going to be a great season guys. I'll be happy with you getting your revenge, as long as we win the league. Thanks for joining all of you!

I'll be back on occasion to talk to you guys like last season. Itll involve a little more trash talk, but also respect where it's due. It'll upset some, but they'll be okay. Good luck guys! I think it's time someone took the trophy out of Manchester.

11 Aug 2014 21:22:47
Totally agree TJ,

Expect me on your page giving you some stick, with a few chorus's of "Where's your Suarez gone, where's your Suarez gone".

Warn Sizemick, Reet, Big bad Dan and Ken Aguero, lol.

Hi guys
A quick question if I may?
Will Callum Chambers be a regular starter this year?
I thought he looked beyond his years, and played really well against Citeh.

Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I can def see him being played in the cup games to rest either Kos or Per, considering English players valuations, I think we got a real gem and an amazing price.

Agree0 Disagree0

To early to judge yet but he certainly looks a prospect. I like what I see so far. let's she him at the sharp end first.

Agree0 Disagree0

That's what I was thinking Durban, I best not pick him for my fantasy football then ;0) cheers

Agree0 Disagree0

I doubt it as TV5 and KOS will still be first choice CB's without question and Debuchy first choice RB and Arteta and Flamini still battling over the DM slot. I see him as First backup now in CB and RB births. Wenger may slowly mould him into a DM over time using him as DM in cup games.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - TV5?...hmmm..

No I don't think so unless we get injuries. At 19 he still has a lot to learn & hopefully improve his pace as well.

Agree0 Disagree0

Regular? No. Unless injuries dictate. He will play on Saturday to cover Mertesacker. If Koscielny's Achilles injury is bad then when Mertesacker comes back, Chambers will cover Koscielny.

In our strongest XI he would start as sub. Don't get me wrong, I think he will play 20-30 games easily this season and looks to be a fantastic player.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 18:24:13
I think at the moment Chambers is a bit of an enigma.

Predominantly a right back but I think Debuchy will lock down that position.

He can play as Centre Back, but again, Per and Kos have that sorted, hence the departure of Vermaelen.

So, he will cover RB and CH at various times of the season.

Personally, I think Wenger will try him as a DM due to the fact he is young, athletic and defence minded.

He has a big future at Arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks guys :0)

Agree0 Disagree0

I liked that when Debuchy bombed forward, Calum moved into the RB spot to cover till Debuchy got back

Good to see Ze German World Cup winners returning to a trophy (shield) winning Arsenal squad.

They're like new signings!

Coupled with Theo back by the end of September and we are strong.

There's just one thing missing.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Is theo expected back end of sep? ed25 said he doubted we would see him this side of christmas

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - he may step up training, but he wont be playing in september eden..

11 Aug 2014 18:25:11
A DM?

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks ed :) hope he's back soon can't wait to see him and Sanchez linking up

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah Dags. I have banned myself from mentioned that position as it is driving me mad!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 21:16:34
Agree Greeny,

Its been a very good window, but a decent DM would make it a near perfect window.

The thing is, if we get somebody like Spyder or Carvalho, that could be a team that lasts us for the next 4 or 5 year's, with just a little bit of adjustment every Summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 16:51:42
Remy hasn't been seen or heard from since his 'failed' medical. Dags I know you have him! Is he in the guest bedroom or does he sleep in the master bedroom? :p

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Have you ever seen the film Misery.? Yeah. it's something like that.

Agree0 Disagree0

He's in the sex dungeon in the basement.

Hey Gooners and eds

What get your guys thoughts on Agger, I wouldn't be too disappointed if he was 3rd choice CB

Believable0 Unbelievable0

2 things. Can't see Agger leaving Liverpool just to sit on the bench. Secondly I can't see liverpool selling to a rival premier league team (top 4/5). The same reason we sold Vermaelen to Barca as apposed to United.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sitting on the bench for Arsenal is better for him than not even getting on the bench for Liverpool. Brendan has been stockpiling mediocre centre backs.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would love to have Agger, but I doubt he wants to switch one bench for another.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think we can look at it like that Rocky, it's a long season and we can't expect Kos and Per to playing none stop, rotation is the key to keep players fresh and reduce injuries but After the Suarez story last year, we may not be Liverpool's favorite mates. See Spurs "bid" £12 mil. right then let's bid £12,000, 001

Agree0 Disagree0

Agger will not sign for Arsenal. End of.

Move on guys! New names for your speculation:

Joel Veltman
Fabian Schaar
Matthew Upson
Pascal Cygan
Igor Stepanovs

Agree0 Disagree0

We need to sign someone that is for sure 2 main CB's and 1 utility cover in Chambers is not enough. Agger seems pretty desperate to leave and if there is no other serious bidders Liverpool may have to sell to us in the end. To keep things fresh we could use Agger in domestic cup games and against lesser PL teams to keep Kos and Mert fresh.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 18:36:06
Centre Half will be a major problem.

We want top class but will a top class CH come to Arsenal to benchwarm?

I think Calum Chambers will be our "Mr Versatile".

CH, Right Back and possibly, I repeat possibly, defensive mid.

11 Aug 2014 11:38:10
Brilliant game yesterday! Well done gunners! Although per should be made captain once he returns as I don't think arteta will start many games this season. Ramsey was world class and good to see wilshere doing what he does best!
Out- coq, miyachi, gnabry on loan
In- khedira, veltman or hinteregger and rabiot
COYG

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well considering AW is picking the team and he picked Arteta captain - small chance you might be wrong on this one.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 13:06:45
It seems to me that Wenger values a Captains presence more in the changing room than on the pitch these days. Otherwise I'm sure vermalen would have lost his title over the last 18mnts

Agree0 Disagree0

He decided when he made Arteta vice captain that he was a better option that Mertesacker and he obviously still thinks the same. Arteta may not start every game - but he will probably play more than he misses.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 11:33:29
A decent game yesterday, a win is always savoured but for a bit of realism please bear in mind that City were missing a lot of first team regulars. I appreciate that we were to but when the teams meet later in the month it’ll certainly be a harder fought victory. I was impressed with Chambers, he’s brave going into the tackle and his distribution is very cool. Monreal going to CB was a complete bomb scare, we urgently need another CB going into the season. It’s highly unlikely this will be a Hummels etc as Per/Kos are 99% guaranteed to start together so expect an unknown player, likely from France or Germany.
Interesting to see Arteta given the armband, I fear this means he is deemed part of the starting 11 – Arsene was criticised last season for having the club captain on the bench so cannot anticipate he will do the same again – this effectively ends our ‘pursuit’ of Kedhira, Bender, Schneiderlin etc? I also think it’d be wise to add a bit of height/muscle to our team. Granted we pinged the ball about and ran rings round the City seconds but the difference in height/build was clear to see. I fear against the Stokes of the world on a rainy day in November we might not be up for it and will need a bit of grit to get us through.
Still a great day for Gunners and a win to enjoy – particularly the faces of Nasri and Sagna ho, ho, ho.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - the score was 3-0, and both teams had players out, so i cant see what the negatives are myself G83?..

Dont worry 83, we don't play Stoke in November! :o)

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 13:11:57
Both teams had an 80% team out and both teams played in 3rd gear. In those circumstances we put manners on them. Yes it will be different in a month but it'll be a 50-50 game where we have nothing to fear (1st team vs 1st team situation) yesterday was a great victory

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 17:56:53
@Ed0025: I'm not trying to be pessimistic but for me the negative(s) are a lack of cover at CB, having to rely on Monreal is an accident waiting to happen. Also, outwith Flamini, no 'true' DM in our squad. If Arteta can recreate the masterclass he gave away to Napoli last year, week in, week out, then happy days. I just can't see it.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 11:26:35
Great job my arsenal, keep it up, more of it, one thing I am sure of this season is, we are not going to be an easy meat for the top teams.I look forward to see owen's facial contour at the end of the season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2014 11:01:32
I've got a nasty feeling that we're going to end up not buying anymore midfielders, and just add a cb. If that's the case, then how much stronger are we than last year? 2nd choice gk replaced with another 2nd choice gk, a rb replaced with another who might be slightly better currently, and a replacement of an outgoing cb. So we'll be two players better off . Sanchez and chambers assuming we actually do get a new cb. Is that enough to win the league?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - it seems like some people are never happy CS, the team is stronger mate, and i believe there is more to come, but i suppose you cant stop people having a glass half empty attitude..

11 Aug 2014 13:14:57
I'm with CS ed. yes we are stronger but are we strong enough to win it? Other teams have strengthened to

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i would say ..yes, sheeny..

11 Aug 2014 13:18:00
Oh and ed an optimist says its a glass half full. A pessimist says its half empty.

A realist says you can fit more in it.

Agree0 Disagree0

You could well be right a Cb and that is it. Another DM and striker would be ideal but time is starting to run out in the transfer window and fees are starting to rise.

I think we are a little stronger than last year with Sanchez giving another demonsion up front and I feel a big factor with Germany winning the World Cup that the feel good factor will rub off on the whole squad. I see a better season for Ozil and maybe Podolski although there are roumours he may leave.

A big factor as always for us is injuries, key players that must stay pretty much fit throughout the season for us to be in with a shot are Giroud, Ramsey, the 2 CB's.

I think now with Sanchez losing Walcott for any length of time or vice versa will not be so bad as he have that pace in both of them. Not to mention Joel Campbell now so we defo have more pace options now

I would like to see another orthodox physical central striker brought in as we rely on Giroud a lot to provide that physical presense and to hold the ball up and if he is out the other forwards are just not very effective in that role and we would lose decent box presence to cross into. Sonago is just still a very raw talent for me

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 10:28:38
After re-watching yesterday's game, I thought i'd share a few opinions.

Firstly, Aaron Ramsey looks brilliant! He is carrying on his early form last season and from his FA Cup winner in May. If he stays fit the whole season, we will challenge for the title. He will be the next £60m plus player in a season or two if he carries on. It is important we build a trophy winning team around him and other players like Alexis, Ozil, Koscielny etc to keep them playing for our club. We talk about loyalty or disloyal players if they're names are Adebayor, Nasri and Van Persie, but what you have to accept is, if we were consistently winning trophies then no-one would leave unless Wenger deemed it so. We must keep the core of the team together and add improvements and go on to winning trophies consistently.

Second, I don't think we can underestimate just how important it was for players like Alexis, Debuchy, Chambers and (although he didn't play) Ospina to come into a club and have us win a trophy (shield) straight away. Now everyone at the club has experienced winning a trophy. For the new players, that's ALL they know! This is important moving forward as this experience will help them in future cup finals and title winning moments.

Finally, I think our squad is very big and strong currently with the exception of the two positions constantly being mentioned. We all know what they are, I'm sure Arsene does too. But EVERY other position has two players fighting for the right to play and this can only be good going into the new season.

I for one cannot wait to see this season unfold!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - good post that greeny..

Great post Doc Green, we have much to be happy and excited about and I am very much both of those things my friend.
Cover and competition for places as you say has not been this strong since? I can't remember and as long as we get a (you know what) player in before the window shuts there's every reason to believe we can compete with the best again on equal terms.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 20:21:06

I know Arteta was vice captain last season, but my vote for captain would have gone to Per.
This looks like another captain who will leave very soon.
Now that I have got that off my chest, I thought we played well yesterday, looking forward to a great 2014/2015 season.COYG

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2014 11:12:44
So Arteta is captain? Or just because Per was still out he was captain for one game?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 09:52:39
Banter please was just thinking about truly World Class Players in the PL, and to be honest I see only us having to Boast that player in Ozil. Suarez just got there but he has also left, is this a sign of the PL deteriorating.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2014 12:23:50
It's a sign of rich clubs overstocking on players and those are across Europe. In Spain the issue is Real and Barcelona have individual global TV rights and are politically perfected from their debt. It's grossly unfair. The Bundesliga is doing well because of german player development. PL still is the tightest and the hardest, top to bottom. No easy matches.

As for Arsenal? We also have The Welsh Jesus, Sanchez, Per and Kos. Case could be made for Gibbs if he ever has a season uninjured and I think we underestimate Shezzer even if he doesn't -:). Not that we don't need a couple of more players, but the grass is greener etc. and some people love other peoples wives more than their own

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh and don't forget toure kompany aguero silva hazard van persie terry zabaleta ramires, etc.but I suppose its peoples opinion on world class. Do they have to win world cup, champs league, or play for bayern barca or real. Do they have to be sold for 60+ sqillians. Wc is basically an opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ramsey's interview said it best we have a tight team with everyone pulling for one another. Needs prime world class, aging world class for experience and depth and up and coming world class…we have all three.

Would add Cazorla, Theo and maybe Debuchy as prime world class. Done!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 13:25:44
"The welsh Jesus" just burst myself laughing before remembering I was on a full train. People are moving away.

But while Steve is correct WC is an opinion there is plenty of WC players in the Prem. The difference with other leagues is there is very little competition so they're stars seem to shine brighter. They also don't play three times a week for more or less the entire season. And they don't compete in cups to the extent PL clubs compete in LC and FAC

Agree0 Disagree0

There is a difference between WC players and those who have the potential to be one, the number of players being suggested have the potential to be WC but are not yet there. From my list WC players (no particular Order) -:
1. Ronaldo.
2. Messi.
3. Bale (yes he might be a spud).
4. Robben.
5. Ribery.
6. Suarez.
7. Ozil.
8. Yaya Toure (Maybe)

Potenital WC Players
1. Ramsey
2. Aguero
3. Sanchez

I can't vouch for anybody else, sorry no VP no Rooney, one can't perform on CL stage, the other can't score for country.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Is that the same Rooney who has the same amount of international goals as Suarez and who has scored more goals in his career, or the RVP who has scored 20 goals in the last 6 seasons in Europe? Looks like a wee touch of the ABUs have crept into your post.}

Very good aman so according to your logic you can't be world class if you are defender or goalkeeper and ronaldo is a world class forward but he ain't a world class right back or centerback. Your list only shows attackers basically

Agree0 Disagree0

Read my post again, Suarez just reached the stat of World Class after last season, Suarez still scored more goals than Rooney this WC inspite of playing lesser games. Yes this is RVP, the same RVP who flopped against Madrid and the same RVP who missed the 4th goal against Milan, and the same RVP who got foolishly sent off against Barca. Edd I think I know my stats better than 90% of the people on here.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ok well steve who would you suggest in those Position GK covered in Neuer, who is a truly WC RB, if there were the older folks we could have named the likes of Maldini, Nesta, Ronaldinho. With the current set of players we have who according to you is WC? Dani Alves?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 21:26:25
Talks about 'Older Folks' but mentions 3 players, 2 of which retired less than a decade ago and one of which is still playing. Jump down off that high horse lad.

Agree0 Disagree0

Like I said what is world class its opinion, you might think someone is world class I don't and vise versa. Believe me we have world class players in the prem.

Agree0 Disagree0

Redrosie u don't even understand what I am saying so if anyone is on cloud 9 its you. I asked for Banter as to do the PL with the current crop have players have any truly World Class players. Read again, and do not simply reply because your fingers itch.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cloud 9 is a metaphor for being elated, not narcissistic aman.

also knowing stats doesn't make your opinion more valid.
how many times do you hear a manager discredit statistics or just brush them off? all the time mate.

statistically england had the best passing in our group or something. didn't count for much.

As for world class players, i'd say the top 12 teams in the premier league have potentially 1 WC player, though that was off the top of my head. ill try now.

Manchester City (Toure)
Liverpool (suarez)
Chelsea (Ramirez)
Arsenal (Ozil)
Everton (Baines)
Tottenham Hotspur (Loris)
Manchester United (RVP)
Southampton (Lovren)
Stoke City (begovic?)
Newcastle United (Debuchy)
Crystal Palace (Hangeland?)
Swansea City (Bony)

ok maybe not top 12 on last seasons finish but still, there's at least 12 world class players in the league, with the top 7 teams having at least 2 'world class'

personally I think would they get into a league of the top 10-20 players in the world.
if world football reset, and only 20-25 teams were made, would they get into the 20 man squad?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 08:10:02
Ed002, do you see anything materialising with Veltman?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have said that Arsenal has enquired. I have no idea what will happen.}

11 Aug 2014 08:09:23
Ed002 you have said arsenal are considering other options for midfield. please can u tell me which players arsenal are now considering for midfielding? Thanx

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - RTFP. You are really wasting my time hounding me from page to page.}

11 Aug 2014 07:31:49
I'm not sorry Verrmaelan has gone as I always thought he was better going forward than defending, our record since he was dropped to make way for the Mert/ Kos partnership would seem to back that up too.
Chambers looked ok playing CB and another youngster to come in as cover would be excellent.
Imo its all hands to the pump to bring in the elusive top quality DM player who without our title dreams look slim at best

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2014 08:50:43
If he was happy to remain a squad player, I would have happily kept him.

Alas, he wanted regular footie. Sad to see him go, but the sadness would be replaced with happiness as long as we invest the £15m we received for him.

Agree0 Disagree0

I am happy for Miquel to come in to 4th CB as he looked solid in pre season! Then splash out on Vidal and its job done!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 13:30:45
Although I don't like Barca I'm glad to see him go to a club where he is sure to be successful. He's a real favourite of mine and he hasn't left for money like a lot of our players I tip my cap to him and wish him the very best because he was the utmost professional and team player even while he was dropped.

Baz I don't rate Miquel in the slightest. Played 12 games for Leicester I think last season. He's not good enough. Would love Vidal but don't see it happening

Agree0 Disagree0

Miquel is our worst defender by a mile. There is no way he should be our 4th choice.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 07:08:56
I thought Jack did really well yesterday and he now needs to build on it Aaron came out of the blocks quickly last season and hasn't stopped since and that's what has to do too, 1 good 5 average and 3 poor game runs have to be a thing of the past as all eyes are very firmly fixed on he who would be king this season.
Also Sanogo looks twice the player who finished last season and had a big hand in both first half goals.
Plenty of other pluses but the two players who took most stick on here last season have had good preseasons so credit where its due, so far so good

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2014 08:52:20
Totally agree mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 01:59:36
As our team stands I reckon we will get 3rd. i'm mega happy that we have got Mr Sanchez in our ranks - He's just a tank and a non-stop runner, something we liked with Pod.

I feel if we add Reus to the team, I reckon we will take second & potentially take first depending on the performances of other teams.

A cdm, is spoke about a lot but I don't feel we need one when we have got Wilshere/Arteta/Diaby. Money could be spent elsewhere.

Reus with Theo, Sanchez & Ozil would be a lethal combo with pace, skill and creativity. With the likes of Pod, Chambo, Cazorla and Giroud to mix it up.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm sorry but Wilshire is not a cdm, Arteta is too slow and Diaby is never fit enough to get us through one opposition attack let alone a full season.
We really need a new player or all the positive work is in danger of being little to no help

Agree0 Disagree0

We are going to challenge for the league this year, its a toss-up between us and chelsea. I favor us. Also, expect to make a deep CL run.

Going to be great season to be us!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 08:20:20
Totally agree with JPSA

Agree0 Disagree0

Impossible to say where we will finish, a fruitless exercise IMO, but we only just fell away late on last season and had to cope with several long term injuries.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 13:37:25
I'm with J. However if we consent rated solely on PL and went out in the first round of LC and CL group stage I think we'd win it hands down. Injuries at a time of congested fixtures killed us last season. Look at the run LFC put together in Feb-April playing one game a week. Would rather win the prem and do poorly every other comp than be also rans in everything.

The season after next then would be the CL challenge

Reading down the posts topics written last tonight on banter, and i'm not sure if I am looking at an Arsenal footballing site, or some hybrid of trisha, jeremy kyle, eastenders, the waltons and little house on the prairie.

Goldboy's upset, Little Gunner thinks he's about to be cybermugged in a virtual car park, and dags' jokes are so bad they are actually starting to make my ears bleed.

I can only hope you are all drunk

Yours dryly and sarcastically

Make sure you tune in next time when? Dags true identity will finally be revealed, DR Green gives his professional opinion on why Bentner could be Liverpool's answer to their Saurez wows and one of the Eds dishes the dirt on Billy Wilson.
Confused? You will be!
Until next time

The only signings I can see Arsene making are those to replace players he will sell, I think he is more than happy with his squad.

When you think Walcott, Per, Ozil and Podolski were all missing it really shows our strength in depth

Was going to post pretty much the same thing. Just wrote out a couple of teams.

OG
Ox - öz - Alexis
Jack - Rambo
Gibbs - Kos - Per - Debuchy
Szcz

Sanogo
Poldi - Caz - Theo
Artete - Flam
Nacho - . - Chambo - Bellerin
Ospina

That's without Campbell, Rosicky, Diaby (i know lol), Gnabry and Akpom.

So IF we sign anyone I suspect it will be a centre back - possibly one who plays in midfield because I can't see any of our current cms going anywhere

Whether the team is good enough to GENUINELY compete I am not convinced.

I think we need someone better to play alongside Ramsey and I'm not sure how Alexis will cope if played through the middle. Need big seasons from Giroud, Poldi, Wilshere and Ox

Little Gunner

I don't need to threaten any matey, clearly you missed the smiley .

Dear o dear, it was a post that was much less harmful than some of the one's having a dig at Goldboy.

Goldboy and I have similar views. views which is what we all have .

I would stand by his side when discussing Jack Wilshire

Here Endith the lesson

I'm not sure but the name little gunner does imply LG might be a young poster? Which doesn't of course make his opinions any less valued but it does mean maybe some slac is needed here mate.
I'm probably being over protective and he's my old headmaster in which case fire at will :-) but just in case?

Agree.

Different people have different views.

Respect each other. No offence, but I would hate this site to be like other sites.

Slightly biased, but I think, especially with Ed0025 running the show, the Arsenal page is the best.

Let's keep it that way please.
