Watching wenger talking about what a great team needs is a person to make the great pass and the great striker to finish on skys dennis Bergkamp football greatest.we currently have cazorla and ozil to make the pass but no great finisher .clearly he knew in 1996 that's the winning formula wish he would just tell the board, to get a world class striker.

Think it's well out of order Mourinho having a go at his female physio, Eva Carneiro.

Although, I wouldn't mind having a go at her myself, but that's a different story.

Giroud goals to games last 3 seasons - 58 in 134. Benzema - 66 in 148. Benzema has been playing in a superior side that dominate more games and create more chances.
Where am I going with this? Benzema is NOT world class. Watch Suarez in his last year at Liverpool. Aguero when he is fit. Tevez when he was at his best. Henry, remember him? RVP in his final season for us.
Now watch Benzema. Is he at that kind of level? Nope, not in ever. Very good player yes. Would he improve us? Probably. But not world class. Finally to those who say Giroud is uselesscan't finish, you are talking nonsense

Believable2 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2015 20:07:16
In 136 games for us, Giroud has 58 goals and 28 assists.

In 188 games for Madrid, Benzema has 88 goals and 56 assists.

That means Giroud scores every 2.3 games for us and assists once every 4.8 games.

Benzema scores once every 2.1 games and assists once every 3.34 games.

Straight off the bat there, you've got a better goal/assist per game ratio.

However, your point about the team he plays in, is very valid, which, leads me to my next point.
He plays for Real Madrid.

He's not the focal point of the attack there.
Yes, he plays as the striker, but the main outlet for them is Ronaldo.
He's the star, the attraction, the one people pay to see (although James is starting to hold his own in terms of draw)

I read somewhere that in all competitions last season, Benzema grabbed over 20 assists for Ronaldo.
20!

Look, at the end of the day, Giroud isn't a bad forward.
But he's only a good forward on his day.
If you stop Giroud from getting space, you stop Giroud, simple.

No, Benzema isn't on the level of Suarez, but in terms of strikers, who is?
Maybe Ibra at a push?

Benzema has more rounded attributes and skills to fit into the Prem.

If we sign him and it is a big if, we'll of signed a forward that's equal to any other in the premier league, Costa and Aguero included.

He'd be joining a system where, even though Alexis is the star, he's not as egotistical as Ronaldo and our players really do work as a team.

Yes, it's great that we can say Alexis will get 15 or so goals a season, that Santi and Ramsey will chip in with 10 a piece or so and that a fit Theo and AoC will also contribute, but at the end of the day, you don't win the league without a striker that'll bang them in.

Giroud, as I say, is a good forward.
But a well drilled team, can neutralise him with ease.
He's not going to win a foot race, he's not the most technical, he's strong and had a good left foot.

Get stuck in and show him onto his right and you've stopped him.

Benzema provides more work for the defenders, more for them to deal with.
Not only in terms of a striker, but his pace and running, compared to Olly's, draws players wider and that's going to help Alexis.

My massive bias aside, Özil will also benefit from a player like Benzema to work with.

The players themselves, said that Özil was a massive boost when he joined, because they could see him in training, doing things that nobody else thinks of.

Alexis also had the same effect, Per quoted his desire and work rate as something that really inspires the players.

Big players, like Benzema, offer more than stats.

the other players up their game, they work harder to keep their place, they do more to stay on the same level as the new guy, they try harder to match their ethic and desire.

It rallies the fans, it excites people, makes them cheer harder and gets gate tickets up.

Will he win us the league alone?
No.

But it's a darn addition to that puzzle.

It might feel bad but a loss in the first match against opponents we should beat may well be the best thing that could have happened; we might actually sign a striker and/or midfielder as Wenger has had to deal with the embarrassment of that dire affair.

Likewise, it shows that the squad cohesion simply meant we were better than the teams we played but not as ready as one who had been already competitive for several weeks now (Everton, Chelsea, Stoke all been absolutely rubbish this past week).

All in all, it's the first game so chill out, basically

Believable3 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2015 20:04:31
Plus imagine if we'd gone unbeaten in our first 10 to 15 games and the hype that would have come with it, INVINCIBLES Mk2 and all that hanging over a team that's very much still emerging from title challenging hibernation, the temptation to hold on in games and not lose when we could have and should have pushed on and won would be enormous.
Every Arsenal team will forever be judged by the invincibles so if there is a good reason to get beaten 1st of the season that's as good as any.

Shaqiri to Stoke is a bigger shock than cabaye at palace

I'd have shaqiri on our wing all day long. Not sure how hel do at a small club but hel be main man again.

Well done some. Massive signing. Amazed spurs didn't attempt that deal.

So who do we think we will buy before window closes?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2015 18:38:30
I wouldn't have him; poor man's Alexis and I'd rather the Ox/Theo on the right.

Stoke looking top notch though; can't say I fancy the trip to the Britannia!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2015 19:05:13
Liverpool fan here. No offense but what do you people seriously see in shaqiri? And youdhave him over walcott sanchez and chanberlain😨 I have watched shaqiri extensively since last year when Liverpool had interest . And all i've ever seen is a player who remains inconspicuous for most parts of the game

Agree2 Disagree0

11 Aug 2015 19:08:20
Shaqiri and Bojan, 2 class players.

Throw Shawcross in the mix and you still have 2 class players...and a plonker.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2015 19:46:35
Cavani would not be amazing. He'd get a good number of goals yes, but he doesn't have the skill/first touch to play up front for us on his own. Just watch PSG when Ibra is injured and they have to play Cavani up front, and you'll see how 'great' Cavani is.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2015 20:09:05
I'm with Crybaby here, even if he was joking!

He was a very good forward, but recently, he's dropped off, he's not been playing well and he's generally not the forward we saw at Palermo/Napoli.

Maybe it is because he's unhappy, but I'm wary of him!

11 Aug 2015 20:16:38

This Wenger out nonsense is just batsh*t crazy. Aside from what he has done for the club...there are only 4-5 managers in the world that are better and one manages our rival chelsea and the other is racing horses. The high risk of hiring a new manager with a big name to spend the treasury also has the risk of being short term leaving the team in worse shape. If we go young looking for the next Wenger, there is a way below 50% chance it would work, looking around the league, Martinez, Rodgers etc.

So enjoy the man that brought us entertaining football, Henry, Pires etc .. he will get this right as he always does and we will have a stable team long term that contends and hopefully wins some trophies...

Love the way everyone wants to play the high risk all or nothing gambit with the boards money, every team is a blip away from Leeds, Portsmouth (& Spurs in their own special way) fall from grace. Look how much United is spending to right its ship and good luck with that.

Very good post, but i have got too say i don't agree with a word of it. Then again I've given my reasons in the past and i am sticking to them as i can't see where the optimism is coming from. Personally i think wengers antiquated ways are holding this potentially huge club back. His man management skills and his business skills are probably unrivalled. His coaching and tactical skills are questionable to put it mildly. Yes he's won two fa cups and for that i am greatful. But great teams don't always win fa cups and in both seasons we won the cup we managed to get hammered of the face of the earth and blow a five point lead to scrape 3rd the next season. In my humble opinion we are geared up to be on the same table as the top teams in europe and competing at the same level and we are not. Given our resourses we can and should be a bigger player, yet we seem happy as a club to just hang onto their coat tails and tag along behind. Wengers tactical deficiency is what let's him and us down. His job is done and it needs taking to the next level. But whatever i and anyone says we are stuck with him and we are all going on the same journey whether we are satisfied or not. I will say this i hope and pray youvare right and i am wrong end of.

11 Aug 2015 19:35:09

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - sorry but getting a player's name is a waste of time in my personal opinion. They will leave in a year or two anyway.}

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2015 17:43:19
If it makes you lot feel better, I bought 4 Arsenal kits when I had a job and money to do so:
-06 final highbury shirt (classic, love it - no name on the back)
-09/10 kit with Arshavin on the back
-10/11 kit with Nasri on the back
-11/12 kit with RVP on the back

I only have 2 kits now (who doesn't love Arshavin?). Safe to say I learned my lesson

Just out of interest, what are people's thoughts regarding more signings this season?
Will we sign someone or won't we?

And if we don't sign anyone, are we strong enough?

I don't really know either way myself. I only ask because personally, I want Benzema so badly as I feel he's really what we're missing up top.

That being said, if a striker really isn't available, I wouldn't be happy if we went and got an average one just because.

I ask mostly, because whilst were being linked with half the worlds strikers and midfielders, The Mirror say we're not even close to any signings and aren't really looking!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2015 10:44:25
I think Arsene will still do business if he can get the players he wants at the right price of course :-)
We usually do our buying on the QT so once the deal goes public it means the club we are dealing with is fishing for better offers which gives Arsene the right annoyance and if it ain't wrapped up quickly it usually don't happen at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2015 11:47:27
I think we have enough in our locker.

Chelsea are the benchmark but Costa will miss a lot of games and Falcao, since he arrived in England, hasn't exactly hit the ground running.

Hazard will be the difference, again.

Man City will be thereabouts, but again if Aguero misfires, which he won't, than they won't win league.

We have enough, but of course, Benzema will take us to another level altogether.
