Loved the Ox today. Not his or many people's best position for him, but bombed forward with purpose.

Great game and great opener for the premier league. Its a good sign that we are going forward and still (maybe) Sanchez to come back.
As gor our defence I won't comment as we didn't have a proper defenders available for selections. Next game we will have kos bossing the back along with mustafi. Holding need to be more aggressive woth his game I think but he's learning and will come good in the future.
Lacazette was great today and so glad for the lad to get his first league goal off his shoulders.

we still need 3 players

van dijk/ Manolas
nzonzi/ Fabinho
lucas moura/ mahrez.

Agree with the centre backs but that's as far as I go.

Our formation 3-5-2 doesn't need another defensive midfielder, we need a player similar to Ramsey, willing to make the run beyond the edge of the box.

Ramsey and Xhaka will work well this year but our back ups aren't good enough, so to me I think the two are Seri or Goretzka if we get a Cm

As for wide players. Moura is a poor mans walcott, and I believe mahrez is good but not enough to take us up a level, personally think lemar or carrasco would be good choices (carrasco very unlikely as Athletico won't sell anyone until their ban is up)

Also i think a must is buying Butland. He'd come in a challenge Cech instantly and can feed off Cech and Lehmann to improve.

4 signings is a lot to ask this late in the window.
But we can all hope.

Lucas moura?
Surely no better than our current options.

moura can't be any worse than walcott whos been robbing a living for the past 10 years.

well that was entertaining. ox was energetic but his passing was terrible that's the reason he won't play cm for us xhaka has 2 assist but thought he could do better defensively and i thought ozil was poor.

Results are everything in football so the best start for years.
You can pick holes in victories and make excuses in defeat but 3pts was both required and achieved, job done.

3 points and a great match. Could someone please tell Wenger not to play with 2 left backs as part of a back three, with the central defender Monreal only 5'10". Surely he should have started with Chambers, Holding and Monreal. Then play Kolasinac at left wing back and Oxlade at right wing back. I was stunned to see the back four at the end of Bellerin a right back playing at left back. Ox a right attacking player playing at left back and two left backs playing as centre backs! By the time we play Stoke we should have Mertesacker and Mustafi back, with Koscielny returning against Liverpool. How good is Lacazette.

Well played Lacazette- super debut. Took some kicks, worked hard on wing, great goal and looked real good.

Well played Kola also

Sort the soft centre out Wenger - it will kill us this season

Sort the slow attack as that will cost us

We made an average club look good and a huge club rather weak.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2017 21:49:26
I wouldn't say we made an average team look good. Leicester are a very good team.

In Wenger's defence we were without Gabriel, Koscielny and Mertesacker. Mustafi and Chambers are being brought back in after international duty during the break. Not many teams could cope without 5 CB's.

Too slow attacking and weak at the core - nacho in the middle plus Holding doesn't work. Holding needs Per. .

Lacazette must wonder WTF is going on. He has to make 6 runs before we pass. The one time we are quick - he scores.

Nice game from the young man

Why Ox on the left!!

It's a really tough one to call Steve mate, defeats against Vila West ham on opening day at the Emirates in recent seasons plus a last minute winner against a managerless C Palace doesn't suggest we can be anything but delighted with 3pts however they come in this one.
I'm thinking 2 1 either way or a 2 2 draw, I think it will be very tight although the opening 3 games are an excellent chance for the team and Arsene to show the watching football world they are worth being taken a lot more seriously than anyone outside Arsenal seems to thinks they are.

just a thought, what if raver's a closet spurs player? explains the trusty subaru. oh, sorry, rusty subaru.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2017 16:47:37
Raver has been overheard, sobbing in the back of his Mum's rusty Subaru, complaining that his mates from Arsenal are on twice the pocket money he is on. His Mum has punished him by fining him the maximum permitted 2 weeks pocket money, costing raver £1.50. He is angling for a move to Arsenal, but winning trophies could be dangerous for his mental health As he knows the pain at Wembley just goes on. 1961 and waiting!

I don't see any reason why we should not finish in the top four. Our team is good enough to achieve 3rd or 4th. Winning the league is a BIG shout, but that won't stop me from believing that it can be done. I predict Pep won't do as good as people are expecting. Please note: I AIN'T WEARING NO RED TINTED GLASSES. I don't do glasses.

If we manage to keep the squad intact, I see no reason why we cannot challenge for the title, especially as we don't have CL football to contend with this season.

Agree2 Disagree0

11 Aug 2017 14:47:00
We don't have CL. but we do have Europa League which comes with more fixtures than the CL am I wrong? Wenger saying it will have to be an exceptional player if anyone else joins us this summer doesn't really look promising. Looks like we will have to pray that everyone can stay fit and hope Lacazette can carry the weight of him and Sanchez on his shoulders. Not that he should have too!

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Aug 2017 15:57:49
title should be our aim no doubt but we don't make ourselves contenders. I honestly think city will be great. he's moved on the dead wood mostly and end of next summer it will be his full team I think scarey.

It's that time of year when the BBC pundits and commentators all name their top 4, 40 different football people predicting who they think will finish where in the top 4.
Arsenal get 11 votes to finish 4th, 0 for 3rd, 0 for 2nd and surprise surprise 0 for top spot :-)
It's the first time I've seen this particular poll where absolutely no one gives us a chance of competing for the title in the season ahead, there are usaully one or two prepared to say Arsenal won't be too far away this time.
I'm always interested in what other people see as with your own club we all tend to be either too optimistic or too pessimistic depending on how happy we are with the manager summer signings etc.
But for not 1 out of 40 tips us as top 3 candidates does say a lot about how for those without those special Arsenal glasses see things and that we still have an awful lot to do in the closing weeks of this transfer window.
For any Arsenal fan without those glasses it's looking like another long tough season ahead.

Gunner I don't think Leicester would have got many votes in their winning season, so opinion doesn't win o lose you anything. But the reason that we aren't fancied at all is because nothing has changed, so nothing is expected. The same things happen repeatedly season after season and why should this season be any different. We will struggle for top four that's obvious and we have a lot of unsatisfactory problems going on that will make it even harder. We haven't got the best team and we haven't got the best manager in the league, why should we win it, or even improve. What has been done to improve us that much that we look better.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Aug 2017 11:51:47
We will get top 4, but it's not enough for a club as big as ours.

We have a top 4 manager, nothing more, nothing less.

11 Aug 2017 12:50:13
Couldn’t agree more with you Steve. Nothing ever changes at The Arsenal. I have tried to refrain from posting until I fell more positive about the season ahead but as you say same manager, same board of directors, so many contracts still unsorted and players to sell. We have been left behind by more ambitious clubs who are prepared to spend their money. We have one of the richest owners in the world so don’t tell me we can’t compete if we had the desire to. We will keep on penny pinching on buying players until the one person we don’t penny pinch on when it comes to wages, i. e. Arsene Wenger goes. Still COYG.

Based on the quality run all these so called pundits have been on over the last year or two G62 I consider it a blessing that none have tipped us to succeed. let's hope we turn out as the Brexit vote of football!

11 Aug 2017 16:06:37
epping have we been tipped for the last decade.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2017 06:49:31
In respect of Sanchez, if we pay him £15m a year for 4 years that's a cost of £60m. If we keep him until the end of his deal, we risk losing him for nothing in a year and will have to spend upwards of £50m to replace him. If we sell him for £50m, then we will have to spend at the least the same, if not much more on a similar level of replacement.
However, my gut feeling with Sanchez and Ox is that it isn't simply about money, they both want to move on.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - money will always be a factor RG, not many leave to take a pay cut mate..

11 Aug 2017 07:05:54
Hi Ed, of course money is a factor, but in the case of these two players the clubs interested in them can match and better any deal Arsenal offer. In Sanchez's case he may be motivated by the prospect of playing for a coach such as Guardiola or by the greater prospect of CL or PL success. In Ox's case he may also have similar aspirations. If it were simply money, offer Sanchez £350,000 pw and Ox £150,000 pw and they wuld sign!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - its the knock on effect that that causes though RG, if you give in to these types of demands it wont be long before the other players are banging on the managers door wanting parity mate..

11 Aug 2017 10:30:41
Totally agree Ed. If Ox gets £150,000 per week, there would be many first team players knocking on Wenger's door. Also, Wenger always has the highest salary at the club, so if Sanchez gets £300,000+ pw, then Wenger will have to be paid slightly higher.

Agree0 Disagree1

11 Aug 2017 16:07:13
if sanchez signs the deal you won't see wenger get a new contract no way.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2017 08:28:28
if you don't give in tho eds you will always lose the best players we have the cash pay it. look at tottenham right now dominoes are about to fall wage wise.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - but two wrongs have never made a right derby..

11 Aug 2017 14:23:08
Surely that would be the easiest conversation Wenger could ever have Ed, as if 99% of the remaining squad members came in demanding 150k a week it would be a simple and straightforward no (after he had stopped laughing) . In all walks of life people get paid more than others for success. I don't think paying Sanchez, Ozil and to a slightly lesser extent the Ox a decent salary can be argued against as they are all good players. I think the damage is done when people see non-performers still get rewarded, and in our case that's someone like Walcott, who is supposedly on over 100k per week, when he doesn't even get in the first team, let along single handedly carry the team to victory. Paying a non-performer handsomely would cause an issue in any workplace, but i don't know many people who begrudge the salary earned by the top people in their industry when they can see what a difference they make.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - decent salary epping?...extortion if you ask me mate..

11 Aug 2017 06:43:16
I am looking forward to tonight's match and hope we get off to a much needed winning start with 2 tricky away matches to follow. I have a feeling Ozil will start, otherwise much the same team that started against Chelsea.
By the time we play Liverpool we need to have Mustafi and Koscielny back and hopefully the 'Sanchez' situation will have been resolved.
Let's do our bit as fans and get behind Wenger and the team tonight.
