Apart from against Marseille who knows how many penalties we have had this season? I can't think of any.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ozil's missed one

Agree0 Disagree0

Yep, that was the marseille one lol. I think Olly scored one the game but apart from that, can't remember too many.

Agree0 Disagree0

Artetta got one as well I think

Agree0 Disagree0

Fenerbahce away (Giroud)
Palace away (Arteta)
Southampton home (Giroud)

Then of course the Ozil one too. I believe this is right all off top of my head.

Agree0 Disagree0

Aaaahhh yes, thank you boys.

I hope we get Barca and if not Bayern in the draw, why? Because either would be cracking ties and let's see how Arsenal 13/14 compared to previous seasons, bring it on says me.

Yes we did well to get out of the toughest group but yes we also threw away top spot, shame but hey ho that was then city next :-)

You have to believe we will play our best side and formation Saturday and so I have to believe a draw would be disappointing.

We are good enough to go there and win and so we should do just that.

No excuses no reasons just 3 points is what I and we should expect, the only thing to fear is us not being us on Saturday and if we are :-) :-) :-) :-) happy days

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I really fancy US for 3 points and if we do play our best and win then on motd we, 'll still not win the league because it was city that were poor. Starting to get annoyed at the lack of credit that we rightfully deserve.

Agree0 Disagree0

Football has a funny way of creating headlines - we miss out on Higuain and we draw them in the tournament

Will Ozil be re-united with his old team in a Arsenal Vs Real knock out gme?

I hope to play Barca but think we will draw Real Madrid

Agree0 Disagree0

Would prefer Barca, Real Madrid or PSG because you know they will attack and possibly leave themselves open at the back.
Bayern and Athletico also attack but they are both more solid at the back and are not as gung-ho as the others.

Just for fun boys and girls,
Sporting celebrities have celebrations when they achieve their goal.
For example, Usain Bolt does the "Lightning Bolt", Gareth Bale has the "Loveheart" and years ago Alan Shearer would run to the crowd after scoring with one arm raised.
What celebration what you "invent" for our boys?
i'm going to kick off with "The Giroud Pose", in account of his model looks.
After scoring, Olly just stands in front of an imaginery mirror, pulls out an imaginery comb from his shorts and just combs his hair, maybe blowing himself a kiss after he has finished, all to the adoration of 60,000 screaming fans at the Emirates.
You can tell i'm bored can't you? lol

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What if he did a catwalk with the half turn and smile? Lol
Ozil could do a frog leap over one of the other players maybe?
Think arteta should be the one doing he's hair in the mirror.

Agree0 Disagree0

Waq1, nah Arteta can't do the hair thing mate, that guy never has a hair out of place. In fact, I don't think its hair, it looks like somebody has melted a 12 inch vinyl record over his head.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Up here in Scotland we describe it as 'Lego-hair'.}

Lol Ed007, I can see why mate.

Is it me or does anyone else think they could play better than Jenkinson? The Lad looks so far out of his depth it's unreal, every time he gets the ball I feel he's going to lose it and he constantly runs back towards goal I just don't understand it. Feel free to slate me if you think I'm being harsh

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I thought last season, if Sagna leaves, then at least we'll have a half decent replacement in Jenkinson. This season though, and although he has only played a few full games, he looks woeful.

So many mistakes, all in crucial areas. The Napoli away game for instance, he bombed forward. and looked quite menacing at times, then loses the ball so simply. With him so far up the field and no cover in our full back area, we were left desperately short, with other players having to leave their position and cover. You could get away with that against the lesser teams, but with Napoli pushing on so much and with serious intent, I cringed every time he was on the ball.

The Chelsea league cup game aswell. Basically put us out of that with his mis-placed header back to Fabianski.

We could do with some cover come January, maybe with Carl going out on loan to make way.

Then again though, he was playing non-league football just a few years ago, so perhaps we shouldn't be to harsh on the lad. He still has a lot to learn, and i'm sure in a few years time, he'll be one of the best full backs in the league. Just needs to work on his positioning and cut out the daft mistakes.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree. I love Jenkinson's attitude and will always support him but I don't think he's up to par at the moment. He will be in two to three years. At the moment, he lacks gametime and in turn, his confidence remains low. I see he panics on the ball and doesn't seem threatening going forward. He's probably afraid to make a mistake. We need to play him more in the Capital One Cup and FA Cup to boost his confidence.

However, at the moment, I hope we get another rightback to fill in Sagna if he leaves. My choices would be Richards, Piszczek, then Abate.

Does anyone know when the draw for the next champions league rounds are?
Also anyone else seen Pedro's comments regarding the draw. He said they hope they avoid arsenal or man city for the next round as they are the best teams.
Yes I know they are the best compared to the rest 2nd place finishers, but it's still good to see other teams fearing us. A result at city would have everyone shaking in their boots, and a result against Chelsea would make us favourites. Although personally still feel we need 2 players in January

{Ed003's Note - tomorrow morning I think Waq.}

Yep, tomorrow at 12 oclock I do believe

Thought it was on the 16th (Monday)

It's normally a friday, but it's Monday the 16th

Agree0 Disagree0

Lol that's kind of confusing, I always though it was Fridays too but my mate says it's on tues, and then now it could be fri, mon or tues. Think we'll find out tomorrow, surprised hasn't really been mentioned yet. Unless I missed it

I think you could be right mate, 16th dec

1. Kos was again best player on pitch yesterday of all 22

2. Love BFG's comments about playing the best

3. Make BFG or Flam captain. Jack is too young. Rambo could be the guy but for now let him play without added pressure

4. Bring on Europe's elite. We will beat them this year.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Totally agree USG, except NO.4. i'm just not feeling that one at the moment but we have a long time until the knock-outs begin, so you never know.

Greetings brethren,

I echo the opinions of many on here: sure, we didn't play well, but we're through to the last 16 when nobody in the media gave us a chance. So hats off to Wenger and the boys for that.

Another positive to take away from this is that surely now Wenger will feel the need to bring in quality reinforcements in January, right? Well FFS I hope so! lol

What positions do you guys think Wenger will look to strengthen?

Peace,
Trinidad-Gooner

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Suarez lol

Agree0 Disagree0

Dude,

Funny you say that because my good friend who is a AC Milan supporter follows all the stories and he was telling me that apparently Suarez was spotted in London shopping around? Not sure either way, but I have a feeling that Wenger will go back in for him with a big bid.

He also told me that we are favourites to land him on the betting sites, but I'm not a betting man so I don't know if that is true.

But my God what a signing that would be!

A gooner can dream, that's for sure haha.

Peace,

Tom Daley the british diving champion has revealed that he was shocked to find out that he has been axed by Ashley Young. Evidently Tom Daley who has been training with Ashley Young for the last couple of seasons has said that "I'm quite surprised but in all fairness there is not much else he could have learnt from me. His performances, especially round the penalty box have been exceptional."

That was such a waste of time and energy. And yes, it's pretty annoying we didn't come first, but let's be honest guys, we've done very well to qualify from that group, and that's what should matter.

The only worrying thing is that that's the first time this season we've not won two games in a row. Things aren't getting any easier: City's home form is simply terrifying. But if there's anyone who can win at the Etihad, it's us. Walcott has to start. He adds much more than Rosicky for me, and also complements Giroud brilliantly (they're basically the polar opposites of one another).

Good luck to everyone on Saturday.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

12 Dec 2013 16:41:36
I would rather keep Rosicky on the pitch and have Walcot on for Giroud. Rosicky plays the most direct game of all our midfielders. No way I would leave him out if I was coach

Very upsetting result. We looked terrible, enough said. Arteta in my opinion is not good enough for us anymore. He was good for a team finishing fourth year in year out but now that we are legitimately challenging I think we need to look elsewhere in January. He's too slow and his passing is so stagnant. Always going backwards or sideways. So anyway now that dortmund escaped and finished first in the group we get for the fourth year running, an extremely tricky draw(unless atletico, who are slightly worse than the other four). But if we look positively we are through at least and if you look at it from any of those first teams point of view they would be dreading being drawn arsenal out of all the second finishing teams. We are by far the best out of those lot and I think we can beat anyone at the moment. So I think with a positive holiday season and January we should go in very confident knowing we can beat anyone.

Thanks for reading

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Bit harsh, I wouldn't say he isn't good enough but the team have out grown him and moved on. nevertheless I would still like to keep him but me used slightly less frequently as I agree I doesn't really add anything to the team anymore and he gets caught out a lot

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed039's Note - Am I not getting this ..... want to use him less frequently, doesnt really add anything and gets caught out ... but you think he is good enough?? I personally think he is still a cracking player but the post was a contradiction on itself)

Atletico are the dark horses, they are the team we don't want, I would like to see us draw Barca, their best days are behind them, ours are in front.

Agree0 Disagree0

Just my opinion, Arteta still a good player, in fact his stats when he sits in front of the back 4 are better than Flamini's.
Flamini, very good player who is more verbal and reads the game better than Arteta. Yes I know, the 2 sentences kind of contradict each other.
IMO, both terrific players when they play on their own in front of the back 4, put them together as defensive Midfielders, even allowing them to rotate going forward, and there's a problem, not sure why, but they don't go together.
Just my opinion and if you don't agree feel free to jump off a cliff (lol, joking btw)

Agree0 Disagree0

Flamini and Arteta are too similar they play the same roll we were lacking a true box to box player last night! I would have played Rosicky as the box to box player and started with Walcott or Gnabry on the wing! At the moment Rambo is our only box to box as Diaby is a constant walking injury! We need a Gundagon or someone similar to challenge Rambo.

If a lesson is learned we will be OK and last night will prove to be one of the best things that happens all season.

ONLY A TEAM THAT FEELS INFERIOR CHANGES ITS TACTICS TO TRY AND GET A RESULT FROM A SUPERIOR TEAM.

We must play our game in each and every match from now on.
The players know it believe in it and them self's playing it, when we change it we pay to much respect to others and put our self's down, not a good feeling from the start.
Be it top or 5th in PL and last 16 or champions league winners let's do it our way.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

G62, I totally agree with you on that one mate, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Dec 2013 11:01:33
In reality we should of learned from the West Brom and United games, Arteta and Flamini together do us no favours.

We used them both last night to much the same effect.

If this team has proved one thing this season it's the fact they now know how to defend. Kos and Mert are up there with the best. It only requires Flamini in front of them to make our defence complete.

With Arteta in as well it takes way to much away from our attacking threat.

This team has what it takes, it just needs to be put out in the right formation for the right matches.

I really don't want to see both names on the team sheet for our next two matches and bring anyone on in the last 16.

Lastly if it's possible, Theo get your best goal scoring boots on over the next few months.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yep, agree to the above. like I posted a few days ago, we need Theo, Santi and Pod back to their goalscoring best of last season, this should add another 30 goals to our tally and take us to another level, hopefully.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jenny your spot on with all you say and Theo will start scoring very soon and lots of them.

Guys let's take a little perspective for a minute. We are all dissapointed in the result, but the negatives are really out of rationale.

I mentioned this in a previous post, but against Milan a few years ago, after the first leg, the whle world did not give us a chance of qualifying, then came the second leg and we missed progressing by one goal! Last year, lose 3-1 to Bayern in the first leg, no chance of qualifying. Well, we all know how the second leg went. 2-0 in the Allianz! Heck even this week, City beat Bayern with an understrength team.

The point i'm trying to make is, that our boys had it in their heads that qualification was pretty nailed on, same as Milan and Bayern did against us. I agree our attack was pretty poor, but honestly if qualification was riding on that game I would have bet on us winning for sure. i'm not sayng I agree with the way the team played, our whether I think the tactics were right, but I do understand why the team underperformed.

Now, the knockout draw. Yeah the teams we can draw are worldly, and yeah our chances or elimination have increased by not winning the group. However, I WANT to play the big teams. that's why we are in the champions league isn't it? I would hate to win the champions league by avoiding the 'bigger' teams, as this gives our enemies a stick to beat us with. If we are going to win it, let's beat the best! We should fear know one.
With our season so far, I would hope that Barca, Real and Bayern are gutted we finished second. I would bet they see us as a big threat!

Peace out you handsome Goons!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

From a very very handsome goon to another, fair post Boogz, I like the cut of your cloth and you are indeed correct my friend.

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree with you Boogz.

Back in August many were saying (pundits, etc), that we'd be lucky to get out of this group- well guess what? We have and with some good results/performances a long the way.

last night wasn't too great and it was frustrating, but in some ways it was a difficult situation psychologically- just avoid losing by 3 goals and you're through. and that's how it looked to me.

We're through to the next round and let's see what happens (many clubs/fans would swap places in a heart beat, believe me)

Let's move on.

Tough tests a head and the team needs our continued support.

COYG!

Agree0 Disagree0

Should have rested Giroud he looks h*cked!

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Dec 2013 06:07:25
Well we qualified . That's all you can really say about last nights performance. I didn't really expect us to go out all guns blazing. We were very booooring so much so I fell asleep with 20 minutes to go. Probably the most boring game I've seen us play since I don't know when.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think that is the problem when you go into a game knowing you have such a 3 goal buffer. You can get casual and just go through the motions a bit, your mental approach to the game is bound to be different on the inside no matter what you might say on the outside leading up to the game. In the end we only just qualified.

Agree0 Disagree0

The post match interview with Per was an interesting one, as he admitted the team were playing at less than 100%. Obviously Napoli had to go for it, and done to us at what we did to them at the Emirates. Closing down quickly, high tempo football.

Despite that, we were desperately poor and looked jaded. The midfield never got going and Giroud was too isolated, with no runners from midfield once he flicked the ball on.

Still, were though ( only just! ) and the injury front is looking better with Pod soon to be back.

Agree0 Disagree0

Very good points above

I hope Arsene injects some pace in the game on the weekend. We looked too "harmless" in the counter attack yesterday

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If we turn up as our self's we will be great if we have more respect for city than we do our self's, we could make spurs look good.

I am enjoying this season more than for years we are on OUR way back to the top and must respect all opponents in all games but never more than we do our selfs.

12 Dec 2013 06:31:06
At the start of the season & after the CL draw, I would have taken being 5 points clear going into xmas & a place in the last 16 of the CL. In reality, we are not yet a team capable of winning the CL, we are 2 or 3 world class players short. To win the CL, you have to face 2 or 3 of the best teams in Europe, hence it is a tall order.
I would like to see us head into the new year top & then concentrate on the title run in. In january, we clearly need a striker with pace. Although Giroud has been superb this season, he lacks pace, which at times we need. Last night, with the paceless duo of Arteta & Flamini, we missed the speedy Walcott & Oxlade, which left the mdfield/attack lacking pace. In addition we have missed Podolski, who is also fairly quick. let's hope Wenger makes this necessary signing.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

12 Dec 2013 06:12:16
I meant to add in my earlier post. Once again Kos played out of his skin. I don't know about Giroud but we definitely need a back up for Kos too. We would be lost without him this season. A real match winning player.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Totally agree Gold, he was like a very bright fairy on top of a poorly decorated christmas tree.
what? i'm just trying to get in the xmas mood lol

Hi Everyone. Some good, honest and fair stuff about tonight. I agree that Arteta didn't have his best game tonight but he has been decent this season. Especially down at Cardiff the other week. He lacks a bit pace when alongside Flamini yes and I do think a fully fit Jack should get ahead of him but we must remember, Wenger Knows!

Saturday is MASSIVE and it being away from home is too. I will be tough but we all know that if we play well we can open up their defence for fun and we can get goals against them. The physiological effect a win for us would have on City is even more priceless than the 6 points. If we beat them at east lands they will want to cry. especially Nasri.

I think Wenger should start Walcott. We need someone running at the full backs and in behind to help Giroud in a different way as he will have a lot on up against Kompany. If we hit our game and go for it with no fear it will take us to a another level confidence wise going into Chelsea on the 23rd!

It's heating up now lads.

COME ON ARSENAL!

I agree with Leegun Wenger went to Napoli with saturdays game on his mind. we were crusing in the first half only being down to 10 men did we start to suffer Wenger was hoping to see out a 0-0 draw but it wasnt to be! So we could face one of the big boys in the next round as a second seed but come on what do you expect at this stage all teams are there on credit, 14 years on the bounce into last 16 not many teams can boast that if any!

Wenger now has a slightly strengthened squad going to East Lands with Walcott, Podolski both fit and a return to our normal starting midfield enough to put fear into any side home or away.

So come on guys let's stop harping on about the negatives and let's get behind the boys could this could be a wonderful year for any Gooner!

12 Dec 2013 00:14:49
Have to say, normally I always look at the positives but today turned out to be more negative then positive.
I'm so sure we would've gotten a result had we played in a more attack minded way.
Oh well you win some, you lose some. Roll on the next round, looking forward to it.
Also got to be said, the napoli fans were amazing the atmosphere was buzzing throughout.
It shows how far we have come this season when finishing 2nd only on goal difference to the Finalists is a underachievement. Really haven't got a clue who the easiest opposition will be next round, but isn't that what the champions leagu is all about.
If I had to choose i'd probably go for psg or Barcelona. Let's see what happens. Next up Man City
