If you had the choice would you keep the stadium as 'The Emirates' or change name back to Highbury?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

In 2006 I'd say I'd have Highbury.

Now we've won our first trophy, a new Wenger era seems to have begun. I'll stick with the emirates, history needs to be made in this stadium. Not taken from the old legendary one.

Agree0 Disagree0

Great question.

I'm inclined to say highbury was our past and 'The Emirates' is our present.

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe to Ashburton Grove, but not to Highbury. There will only ever be one Highbury for Arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oooooooh, controversial ( for me at least).

Leaving Highbury was a big thing
For me.
I loved that place, it was like hallowed ground!
I saw my first ever Arsenal game there too.

I don't think any stadium will be highbury, on a sentimental level.
So i'd have to say, no changing it for me dags!

Agree0 Disagree0

I could and would never want the Emirates to be known or named highbury.
Highbury is a part of the arsenal history books which cannot have a substitute. I as so many fans have so many memories, good and bad but they come from Highbury. No where else.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 23:30:00
Neither, moving from highbury was to start a new chapter in our history.

Calling it the Emirates was for financial reasons, so when the sponsorship has run it's course I'd like us to find a name that we'd all be happy with.
Otherwise we could end up changing names every ten years.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am impressed - a few years ago there would be a lot of bitching about the name. A dynamic of modern football is that there is a need to move on. Long gone are the days of the cloth-capped, hobnailed-booted, chimney sweep making his way, rattle in hand, to cheer on his team at Highbury on a Saturday afternoon. Things are changing and will continue to do so. If you want to don your cloth cap, have a pint of wallop with your chums before going off to the local match, perhaps one of the sides from the suburbs will have survived so you can go and watch them - Spurs or Enfield.}

14 Jul 2014 23:45:55
Very good answers.

I remember when we were building new stadium and there were whispers that it was going to be called 'The Emirates' due to commercial reason's, people (not on here) were saying we have sold our soul to the devil, for a fast buck.

How times have changed, but for me, it was a change that had to be made.

Agree0 Disagree0

There is only one Highbury and that's the way it should stay in my opinion

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2014 00:26:00
Great answer Ed002, totally agree.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2014 01:16:22
The Grove for me too

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2014 21:15:57
its not Highbury and should never be known as it

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 22:32:07
Think Khedira would add that fear factor more than the Southampton boy even though happy with either

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jul 2014 23:47:22
Shall we go for Joey Barton than? Lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 22:29:29
Are we going back to the tried and tested - pace and power sides of the past under AW rather than slow possession which summed up the Cesc arsenal sides of the past?

Bring back the pace and power plus the fear factor in the tunnel. Every team knowing that we will come out the blocks fast and try to kill the game in the first twenty but have too much in the tank for them to stop us.

Add a tall defensive midfielder with a bit of bite and we are there

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jul 2014 23:48:48
Totally agree mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 21:32:49
Whilst it's exciting to be linked with Sami Khedira, there does appear to be a bit of risk involved with him. Since 2006 he's played 90 league games for Stuttgart and similar for Real. Even allowing for 6 months out with his ACL injury he's only averaging 23 ish league games a season. With the physicality and fixture list in England and our back room history, there seems to be a lot of potential for some time on the sidelines. Very good player but at the quoted (guessed) 23m price tag wouldn't we be better off with someone a tad more robust in a central/dm role?
Personally, I'd go for Javi Martinez but I'm guessing we'd need guardiola to lose his marbles to pull that off.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jul 2014 22:15:16
Valid point mate.

I still prefer Schneiderlin, bit of a beast, knows prem league and hardly injured.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 22:24:03
That's just in the leagues Mango. Before last year he avg over 40 games for Madrid all comps.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 22:26:35
I'm sorry dags but you should apply for a job as Liverpool's sporting director.

You're not really a man for top picks :P

Agree0 Disagree0

With the midfield ranks getting stronger and stronger Wenger would have the luxury of resting a few players so I wouldn't be too concerned

Agree0 Disagree0

I see your point but it may not necessarily come off so easy to have a midfielder with such a different style to the rest. Khedira's ability in the ball makes him better suited to our style of play, alongside his ability to sit deep and win the ball (which, you're right, we desperately need). I think he's a rare case that is very good at both and is one of the best signings we could make in that area. i'd agree with Dags that Schniederlin is also a very good option defensively, perhaps a bit more aggressive than Khedira. I'd be happy with him instead if the rumours about Khedira's excessive demands are true. but Khedira really is an exceptional case

Agree0 Disagree0

No offence days but I think your abut off you rocker. World Cup, champions league winner, German starter or French sub?

Agree0 Disagree0

Am I the only one who'd take Bender over those two?

But seen as they seem our most realistic options, I'd have to take Sami.
He may not be 100% defensive minded, but he's got a hell of an engine on him and a winning mentality.

Wenger, seems to be building a team that suits Özil.
And in that mantra, it has to be Sami!

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 23:55:58
Oleg,

Whilst I agree that Khedira is an amazing player and has a great CV, that doesn't necessarily make him much better than Schneiderlin.

Yes, he is better, but not by much and they are 2 different type of midfielders.

My point was merely from an 'injury' point of view, something Schneiderlin doesn't really suffer from.

But I do take your point mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 23:57:27
Sorry, that post was to Bergkamp and not Oleg.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 23:59:25
D_

I think if we get Bender, Schneiderlin or Khedira, we would all be happy mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not going to be disappointed if its Javi Martinez, probably the best of the lot. Not sure he is in play though (ed?)

Agree0 Disagree0

Khedira - Ramsey
Walcott - Ozil - Sanchez
Giroud

OR

Khedira
Wilshere - Ramsey
Ozil
Walcott - Sanchez

OR

Khedira - Ramsey
Walcott - Ozil - Cazorla
Sanchez

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jul 2014 22:17:31
1st one for me.

Giroud is getting better every season, let's stick with him up top.

Agree0 Disagree0

Khedira Ramsey Sanchez Ozil Walcott and Giroud.

Dags will choose the same but swap Khedira for Schneiderlin and Giroud for Remy!

G62 will choose the same as me as he trusts his doctor!

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with Dags

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 22:54:12
Lol,
You know me well Dr Greeny.

For me, Giroud and Remy would be like Holly Willoughby.

A great pair upfront.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - or a right pair of tits?..

15 Jul 2014 00:01:49
C'mon Ed,

That's no way to talk about G62 and Goldboy, lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 20:10:24
I think we need 2 hholding players my choice would be Kramer and bender khedira is a good player but I think bender would b btr suited

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jul 2014 17:43:27
Ed
Any interest from us in William Carvalho?

Khedira would be a good signing but his wages seems to be a problem.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed027's Note - nope, Khedira is the main target it seems

Here is my theory. Sanchez is the only striker we will buy - he will start on the right wing to get him used to the premier, then when theo comes in Oct/ Nov he will start him up front. In the meantime, Giroud will start up front. I'd like some thoughts on this, seems fairly logical to me.

My interest is in Khedira. It's the first time the fake ITK's haven't had to fake it on twitter because the news is overwhelmingly obvious he is on the way. No comments from Madrid, none from Wenger, none from agents, just a lot of links. If he comes, for me, he beats Bender hands down, not necessarily because he's a better DM, but because he can be a DM but also go box to box and link up with Ramsay. He is the missing link. Get him and we genuinely have no one to fear in the top four. We will be looking at Europe surely.

Long been looking at a Gilberto Silva type of player (I loved GS) No one we have is like that at the moment

Agree0 Disagree0

I like your theory on the strikers - makes a lot of sense.

But would also add that it will be horses for courses, when theo comes back there will be a rotation and Giroud will be a very big part of it. ;-))

Agree0 Disagree0

Valid theory Baggins.

The fact we have players up front who can rotate and chop and change and switch positions is good.

looking forward to new season already.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 18:28:43
Considering we are in for at least one central midfielder and some 'papers' reporting two, which I feel is unlikely what role do you believe Wilshere will be left in.

I've defended him in the past when other people have said he has a bad attitude and isn't progressing as a player. Saying he's still young and has time.

But I am finding it harder to defend him when he is caught smoking again and drinking. Obviously footballer's deserve a break but the top level athletes usually don't do these things. I still reckon we would regret selling him and he would come back to haunt us. But I don't see Wenger standing by him if he keeps getting caught doing stuff like this. Especially after he himself said he needs to improve.

What's everyone's opinions?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I love Wilshere, as an Arsenal man and an Englishman, he's the heir to the armband for both club and country, he's our homegrown wunderkind.

But his actions can't be stood for, he should be in London, getting the fittest he's ever been, trying to make sure he's ready for the season and ready to make Wenger have no other option but to bench Ramsey or (hopefully) Khedira.

But he's happy enough to get pi55ed and smoke during the break between the seasons.

Do we see Ramsey doing this? Nope.
Do we see oxlade doing this? Nope.
How about Walcott? Nope.

Buck up Jack and show us what you're made of!

Gets me pretty mad sometimes.

Peace out.

Agree0 Disagree0

I suppose when you are on holiday you don't enjoy yourselves then. Let the lad have his break and then knuckle down.

Agree0 Disagree0

I have some sympathy with him this time as after all he's on holiday and if he can't be off duty then when can he be?
He's made a very heavy rod for his own back and this season will be pivotal in his carrer, personally my money's on him being a Southampton or West ham player with in two years, I hope I'm wrong but I don't think he's got what it takes mentally to be a very top pro.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 21:50:54
Agree with Steve,

Lets judge him when the season starts.

Agree0 Disagree0

It is big defining season for Wilshere he needs to step up to plate and have a consistent run of games and good form, otherwise he will be overtaken as regular starter and just become a squad player.

He needs to stay major injury free but I fear though that he just seems to be that type of player that attracts regular injuries. To me it is his unbalanced bow legged running style on the outside of his feet that is a cause of a lot of injury issues. I am not sure if he has some from or physically abnormality or weather he actually trained himself to run like that it just seems odd to me.

My fear is that it will always be one step forward and 2 steps back with Wilshere with his constant battle with injuires.

Agree0 Disagree0

What is the delay in announcing the debuchy deal, I thought that was nailed on.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Trying to sign a replacement. Apparently the arrival of a replacement is imminent though - from holland.

Agree0 Disagree0

Still don't get what the other teams replacement has got to do with offically announcing it.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 22:24:07
Because Newcastle won't let us sign Debuchy until they find a replacement first.

They are the selling club so they hold all the aces.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 17:54:55
This is really beginning to look good. For the first time in a decade we won a signingbattle against both titlecontenders and L-pool.The signing of Alexis is for me a bigger statement than Ozils.I read a lot on different pages that with Khedira we will win the prem. and so on.Hold your horses. If we could be in the fight untill the very last days and with a decent draw in the Ch.league maybe we could se our team actually compete with the best teams over two legs.I would take this as a step forward this season. With the signings we have hauled in in a year and in those to come we will be champs again fellow gooners.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jul 2014 17:00:58
Hi all still buzzing over the sanchez signing hopefully more to follow of his standard with the season just over a month away was wondering if you could sign any 3 players for our team who would it be and why.

My first would be Ibrahimovic getting on abit now but been doing the business at top level most of his carer and feel he is made for the prem would easily score 25-30 goals a season.

Second would be Schweinsteiger one of if not best midfielder in world in my eyes showed that last night he just never stops.

Third don't really have to explain why really we should have brought him home our former captain fabregas.

Not easy to narrow it down to just 3 I know good luck :)

Ajlevan (gooner from jersey)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

David Luiz, Tom Cleverly and Bobby Zamora.

Nah, just kidding. Really it's Ashley Cole, Nasri and that Dutch guy.

but really (I mean it this time), it's Reus, Schweinsteiger and probably Lahm.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sounds like you would like a whole new team ;-)) Why don't we just swap with Real Madrid?

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 19:48:56
Besides France he's only broke 25 goals in any league once.

He was always overrated

Agree0 Disagree0

Messi, ronaldo and neymar.

Agree0 Disagree0

Rodriguez, neymar and gotze actually

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 20:49:31
*Edit*

Before france he only ever broke the 20 goal barier twice in any league campaign

25 for Inter the year they won the treble
28 for Milan the year he left for France

Barely even came close in any other season in his career!

Also my three :P
Lukaku

Afternoon everyone

earlier posts were recommending the youtube Arsenal chat so I had a look. Unbelievable, it's like footballs version of Pete and Dud, without the alcohol. I then had a look at a few of the other bits on youtube and what struck me is the players really are mates aswell. When AW talks about team spirit, I must admit, I thought it was a load of rubbish but now I can see what he means.

More topical though, I watched Dennis's top 10 goals and it was a reminder of what a genius we had.

If Sanchez gives us half of the Dennis ability we will be seeing the start of yet another chapter in our great club.

Anyway now trawling through the various odds for next season, will update my selections later in the week, just for a heads up to avoid them.

Be lucky.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hi ed, I was wondering. With Sanchez being right footed what's the plan for Walcott? Or where do you expect Sanchez to play? Thank you

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed027's Note - think we'll se Sanchez in strike mate

14 Jul 2014 15:35:16
Just wanna know when people going to get off Cesc's *Horse* he is a good player but NOTHING more, he left us like we were some fat girl and you go on begging it, give up u look like a fool and sound even stupider, I was glad to see the back of him and look, we didn't even miss him. People were going on like we were playing with 10 men once he left.
Save you love for the newcomers and the Arsenal Brand not 1 man!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Already over it.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 19:53:49
Fab is a world class talent.

I would have taken him back back at the end of the day he showed us where his loyalties lay when he walked out. He's not a true gooner and that bite like a Suarez when he wanted back.
Too late Cesc all the best.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 14:47:48
So United sign a kit deal that is worth more than 2.5 times our deal with Puma. Just as well ours is for only 5 years.

We need some real silverware in these next five years to get close to any sort of a deal like that. Here's hoping

COYG

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Got to me a little bit when I read that. It's kinda like I thought things were going for us because of the deal. Then we end up in the same position as before; with rival teams having better deals than us.

On top of that, Manchester United have signed a deal with Chevrolet for approx £50m a year shirt sponsorship. We're on £30m for shirt and stadium combined! And only signed the deal recently I think?

Agree0 Disagree0

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest. Manchester United are a big global brand; it’s going to happen. The thing that makes me smile is how much of this money is going to be creamed off by the Glazers?

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 17:29:07
I really wouldn't worry about it, they are one of the big four with Madrid, Barca and Bayern who earn a fortune through their own means.

We were able to compete before and will be able to again, Atletico showed that mounds of money isn't everything and we earn way more than they do.

We'll be fine. Honest :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 18:20:13
I voiced my displeasure with the Emirates deal when it was signed Chimney and didn't get a warm response.

I hope your'e right Jenny but the expenditure in the game is growing exponentially

Today the financial difference might mean the difference between a Champion and contender that same margin of difference in 10 years time could be between that of Champion and mid table side.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah I wouldn't worry too much, they are in debt to the tune of 500mill.

Agree0 Disagree0

I did think it seemed a bit low when I looked a while back. I didn't bother looking too much in to it though. But now I have, I have to agree with you sheeny. Could be better. Hopefully it's not a long deal. Tbh, I'd prefer to have a high paying shirt sponsor and name the stadium properly. I've never liked sponsored names for stadiums, and I doubt I ever will. Maybe if they offer us £40m a year purely for the naming rights I'll change my mind.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 19:55:10
Wrong there again Jensen my old mukka, infact were not prob not much more in debt. than yourselves now. And its certainly manageable. The galzers by luck imo have managed to pull a masterstroke in getting the club, I hate the way it happened but if we have the window were being told to expect knowone will be moaning.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jul 2014 19:57:17
I don't like commercial names either but it's been done and Emirates at least sounds good. Unlike a load of American stadiums but I think for name rights the second time round we should have been pushing for 60/70m a season. United would prob get 120m a season to rename old Trafford

Agree0 Disagree0

Just reading some stats from EPL last season:

Arsenal and Chelsea had the most clean sheets with 16

Chelsea’s Petr Čech and Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczęsny shared the Golden Glove this season with 16 clean sheets each. This is the first time the award has been shared since it started in 2004-05 and is the lowest number of clean sheets kept by any winner(s)

Arsenal finished above Tottenham for a 19th consecutive season and 20 out of 22 in the Premier League era

Arsenal collected the most points in the Premier League during the 2013 calendar year. The Gunners end the first half of the season at the top of the table but fell to fourth at the end of the season.

Lukas Podolski has completed 90 minutes in only six of his 52 Premier League appearances for the Gunners since joining in the summer of 2012

Arsenal have picked up more points in Premier League London derbies than any other side. The Gunners recorded their 102nd London derby victory since the start of the 1992-93 season with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace. At the other end of the table, the Eagles are propping up the table with 30 points.

Sorry for the long read guys, am sure there are some stats junkies like me here

So I thought i'd put it out there with the help of eds. Who is the number one player we are glad Arsenal never signed. As I have put forward Higuain, he is excluded but the award will be named after him.
suggestions for the 'Gozalo Higuain glad we didn't sign him award' please

Vertogen?

Agree0 Disagree0

I suppose I am the judge on this, I can't have Vertonghen because I think he would be great for us and had a half decent season for the enemy. Lamela good player but in a crap club! Front runners so far, Fellaini, Nani, mvilla.

I'm a lot happier with us signing Khedira after watching last night.

A lot of people want a complete CDM who doesn't get forward, Khedira isn't that. Germany showed last night that you can play a 4-2-3-1 formation without a true CDM. Both Schweinsteiger & Kroos got forward but they were rarely outnumbered at the back as they made sure someone always stayed back if the fullbacks got up.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

True that. Just two guys wit great engins.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah & we'll have 2 great engines in the midfield with Ramsey & Khedira. Khedira seems like a leader too, great character & has that winner mentality we need!

The more German steel, the better!

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't jump the gun re Khedira.

Lets sign him first boys.

You can't help but love Poldolski he's so passionate about Arsenal and Germany of course and everything I've ever read about him says he's a top top bloke.
I just wish that passion was as plain to see on the pitch as it is off it, I'm not saying he is lazy as that doesn't fit in with the man himself but he sure does look it at times on the pitch.
I would love him to be a hero on the pitch as much as off iti really would

Probably good for morale at the very least.

And we need Ozil happy and confident

He's on holidays!

He's entitled to a piss up. A blow out before pre season isn't going to affect his long term progress

Don't agree with smoking though, just stupid

REET

Sensible Gunners

Are there any lol

So Jack Wilshere, once billed as the future of our club, an England captain in waiting once again leaves himself open to what I consider some quite necessary criticism.

Really can't believe the pictures in the mirror.

This is a guy who was bleating about having to turn it on this year, that he's not a young player and that he needs to do better.

Well you're right mate. You're a dad of two and were looking at buying khadiera and maybe someone else in the middle because you've failed to deliver and you're behaving like some person with more Money than sense.

I don't mind one indiscretion but this is becoming ridiculous with this kid.

I remember when he first came on the scene when he was 16 he came into a boozer in bromley where Pennant and Jeffers used to drink and bet, I thought not you. Well there you go stupid Englishman reason why well never win a wc

Just out of interest which boozer in bromley? I have been in bromley for years and don't know of a place suitable for a football fan let alone a football player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jack has a lot of issues to work out but about this particular one I have to say I can't see a problem. He was on holiday and he had a party in a pool. What is the big fuss here? The picture in mirror has only one purpose, to get you mad at Jack for no real reason, spread the word and make more people to check out their website. That's the hole point of today's journalism.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's a shame, but I do think it's just going to be sensationalised by the English media.

They get to slag off Arsenal and England, it's like a dream for them.

If Jack was 18/19 I think it'd be something where someone could give him a clip round the ear and we move on.

But now he's an Arsenal regular and an England international.
And I think we can only have so much more patience.

In all honesty, if we do sign someone like Khedira or bender, then they will start with Ramsey in that midfield duo for me, every time!
Jack is an immense talent, and he has been unlucky with some injuries, but he can't get away with a 'wonder kid' or 'talented youth' sort of tag now, he's a senior player.

I do hate to say it, but he could waste a career that looks very promising, if he keeps acting the fool.

Agree0 Disagree0

Am I right in saying, the lads on holiday at the moment. Most people enjoy their hols and let their hair down. Different when he is training.

Was going to post something similar last night.

Time for Jack to step up and bring his game to the next level.

This is a big season for Arsenal, but probably a bigger season for Jack.

Agree0 Disagree0

If Toni Kroos hadn't already agreed a deal to move to Madrid then I'd tell him to pack his bags and slap the money on the table for Kroos.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you there D.

In the words of Mario Balotelli(sort of). "Why always him?"

Agree0 Disagree0

Bermuda.
It was the freelands tavern - used to get a lot of players show up there, there was a bit of a gambling ring going. Like I say Pennant and Jeffers used to go there a lot, as did a number of others from different clubs.

Agree0 Disagree0

Aussie and D_ I'm sorry but when he can see Khadiera and maybe someone else being bought because in his own admission he hasn't progressed then he should not be smoking.
The club have stood by him through a lot - I'm not talking injuries, he's 22years old and been arrested twice for things which the club has done well to trivialize, as well as the quite open secret as to why he was, "injured" for over a year.
He's taking the piss.

Wilshire ability has always been over hyped, he is just another overrated player who is/was never good enough

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - you could be right SS, but even if he never plays again, he will still have won more than any current spurs player ever has or is ever likely to win mate..

Go Ed.

How about the night when Xavi Iniesta & Messi were lining up to swap jerseys with him.

It took Ramsay two seasons to come back from a year out at that age. Let's see how he does this season

Agree0 Disagree0

AG, I think he needs to be worried about his performances in general, not due to smoking.

As I said, if, we sign Khedira or Bender, I'd start them with Ramsey in the CM 2 we play.

But it's still to early to write him off.
I think we'd be surprised how many players actually smoke if they all did it openly!
It's well know a fair few of the French lads do, why isn't that a big drama?
I do however think this season could be make or break for Jack.

Scotspur, this Wilshire player sounds awful, really like he's been hyped up too much, as you say.
Glad Wilshere isn't like that.

Couldn't agree more with Sheeny. Wilshere is class, don't expect all players/people to mature at the same age. His time will come.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed027's Note - potentially class mate, long way to go yet

Now I'm a happy Gooner!

What a great week. Signed Sanchez with other proven players set to follow. And we (Germans) won the World Cup!

Sorry but cannot hide my joy!
