Stoner: sorry for late reply, been away...will address your posts now!

You made a point about Arsene not understanding why it's not going right for this club and that kind of sums up the problem in the first place. Arsene somehow misses what the whole world sees. Is nobody advising him? I mean, even if he watched feedback on MOTD he would improve.

You ask a good question with would we be bothered about how the club is run if we were winning things but in response I'd say the way the club is run is a massive factor in why we aren't winning things. If the club was run differently we probably would be winning things BUT not with Wenger in control because he has made it very clear 1) he believes he IS arsenal and 2) HIS beliefs are that HE does not want to spend lots on good players. He will stand there and say he hates the sugar daddies and that we run our club with class and we survive on our own resources but he then comes out with he will not even spend those self-made resources on the best players and wages! He's a hypocrite. His personal agendas conflict with modern football - how can he still be in charge if this is the case?

Our club is his personal toy regardless of what goes on in the back with the board. This I am very convinced by. He is the one who will not sign certain players but will choose others. Enrique was a first choice prem LB sold to Lpool for 5.5m - Arsene thought it would be better for the club to sign an out-of-favour unfit older left back from a weaker league. That is just utter lunacy. And just one example. He seems to by into hype too. The Ox- 12-15m. Zaha 10m. How much was Theo? Yet he won't spend double that on an established world class international forward with 5 years of top flight experience for club and country. He'd never sign Suarez for 24m. He's a joke.

Wenger's PERSONAL ideals get in the way of the club progressing. He wants to bring through youth...so what he does is sign rubbish players and not bring many through. He just spends tiny amounts on 18yr old kids hoping in 2 seasons time they will have developed enough to hit the first team. They rarely do and it seems even if they are going to, it's not before they get loaned out a billion times when they're clearly an improvement on what we've got.

So one ideal is the not signing top players.

Another is wages - he doesn't believe wages should be a certain amount. Fine. What does Arsenal football club believe though with regards to the current market rates? If we want to compete, we have to pay the rates. Not signing a player because they want 100k and we're offering 75 is quite frankly a disgrace - you either want that player or you don't. You cannot say you are serious about any signing or that you have used your superior experienced managerial judgement that THEY are the puzzle piece if you won't pay what similar calibre players get at poorer clubs. Simple as. Look at Spurs- they managed to land Adebayor regardless of his wages because they wanted HIM. That is what a football club does! With us a player is only good enough IF he falls into this imaginary wage/price category that has been totally imagined by Wenger.

Another is player status - he will choose status over talent/form all day long. Prime example was when he took off the Ox - our best player by a stretch- and brought on Arshavin when we played Man U at home last season. Robin was in shock, The Ox was in shock, the whole entire crowd even the Man U fans were in shock, and he brought on sadly our most out-of-form player when we were coming back into that game like nobody's business. His words were 'how can anyone question my decision - I took off a player with little experience of these games and replaced him with an experienced world class international' - what a tool, totally disregarding the fact that The Ox was our strongest player. Sorry but it is actually moments like those that hammer in the final coffin nail of our best players desire to stay at Arsenal. Another example is dropping Jenko as soon as Sagna was fit even though Sagna could quite easily have played in the cup games. No sane manager tinkers with their defence when it was the best defence in the league for most of the season possibly even right up until Jenko was dropped. You just do not do it! What, Sagna's back so he just walks back into the team? B*****s.

He pays players on potential - big contracts before they have proven themselves at AFC. Djourou 'could be good' so I'll stick him on a wopper. Terrible resource management.

Some of his etiquette is awful. I hate to admit this but I went to a very traditional private school from 7 -13yrs and I can recognise some things in Wenger that are rooted in traditions of 'excellence'. One of these is that he decides the subs before the game a lot of the time. Naturally when a player has been injured you might say 'Jack you're getting 60 mins today' so that's fine. But to play The Ox, watch him tear Man U a new one, and sub him just because you agreed you would before a ball had even been kicked....shocking. I understand why he does this - it's an old-school etiquette thing. You don't shout at your players on the sideline because you believe they are already briefed so well that being there is really just a formality for the manager. I have had this in sport before. It's fine if you're rolling out Barcelona and winning 5-0 every game. We aren't.

This is not even mentioning squad selection, formation, tactics and coaching. This is a mindset problem. 10 years ago this was not a problem because it was largely a 2-horse race and we had a ridiculous team and the other teams around us were terrible compared with their modern versions. Football has changed but Wenger has not only stuck to his beliefs I think he's actually bought into them even more, almost in disdain for the modern game. Why is he here?

It is clear to me he puts his own agendas ahead of the success of the club. He would rather develop a kid than buy a great player...yet he does spend money. Makes no sense and this is what the fans hate. He lies, he's hypocritical, he is dishonest with the fans and constantly undermines something he once said not long ago. 'We are ambitious.' 'How can we say we are ambitious if we sell our best player?' 'I'm selling Fabregas for £35m.' One example.

Our football is terrible at the moment too. Really bad. Were we playing 433 say 4-7 seasons ago? I don't remember we were.

Another thing - he says totally meaningless things like 'this is the most focused squad ever' etc etc. Yes Arsene, but focus doesn't equate to talent. Gervinho seems to focus more on going to ground than scoring. I want to hear him say 'this is the most talented squad ever' and believe him when he says it. A little something on focus vs talent - Milner vs Tevez. Milner is a great footballer, but one of his biggest strengths is his focus. He has the talent IF he works. And he is probably the hardest-working player in the league. He trains more, he is the most serious-looking guy ever, his team mates all say it, he hardly even celebrates when he scores. It's job done. Assess. Improve. He has the talent, but his focus is what helps him realise it. Tevez on the other hand can go awol, not train, be absent for weeks and weeks then walk back into the team and be MOTM. He is another class. We had players like that - Henry for example...all he had to do was wake up and he was that good. He doesn't need to focus because he's that good. Gervinho without focus? Disaster.

Scouting - sorry but why do we send scouts to watch Begovic? Everybody KNOWS he would be a massive improvement on what we have! Our scouting network is the biggest joke of the club. They watched Lille, ignored Cabaye and Hazard and came back with Gervinho haha. They scouted Samba...what for? He was one of the most iconic performers in the league in his last 2 seasons in England. Just utter lunacy some of the stuff I read about our bloody 'scouting network', it's a disgrace. any manager who needs to scout an EPL player does not deserve their job as far as I am concerned.

Lastly - types of players. We keep signing players who won't take on and beat their man. It's killing us! Spurs - Bale and Lennon take on players for fun. Mata, Tevez, Valencia, Nani....the list is long for top players at better clubs who beat players. My tactic on FIFA as I basically never play it is beat one player, pass the ball. I win a lot like this. Why is Arshavin not our creative mid sometimes? With Santi out wide like Silva plays? Why does the Ox not play up front when he is clearly one of the biggest goal-threats at the club? When Mata isn't out wide he starts alongside Torres! I mean there is just so much oversight that is managerial.

I appreciate Charlie's opinion and I feel he doesn't warrant the disagrees he gets, and actually it's probably the manner and regularity of his posts that gets him his rep/disagrees. But what he says is not all wrong. Regardless of the running of the club, there is simply too much wrong with the team and the way we play as well as the squad we have, and this rests solely with the manager. Fergie nearly got sacked and has since adapted to the modern game and won. Wenger has pined for the dark ages and is using AFC as his personal vehicle for trying to stamp his agendas on the modern world.

Arsene - you have enough money now to build your own football club buy some great french players and join a league if you want to do things like it's 1950. It isn't, get with the times. Sort the wage bill out, sort the formation out, let Bould do his job, sort the squad out, sort the FOOTBALL COACHING out and stop dragging the club through the mud, this, rather like my post, has gone on for long enough!

Metal I find your post very interesting. I would question your thought process however, allow me to elaborate.

All aspects of your post focus on Arsene Wenger during this barren spell of silverware. His tactics, methods, spending are all deemed inadequate because we have not won anything for a significant period of time.

However I ask you to comment on your vantage point of Arsene during our years of success, for at that point in time he could do no wrong. The reason I ask this is because if Arsene is the one constant during this period there must have been other factors which has caused his change in behaviour, explain to me why he would not want to win any more silverware?

I believe Arsene needs a hand, I believe Arsene is not without fallacy, but I do know that a great manager does not change his methods without reason.

Perhaps this is where you, Charlie and I disagree. Ive always believed that the owner of a business has a greater influence than an employee. Silent Stan has never put any money out of pocket in any of his sports franchises (Nuggets, Rams, Avalanche and now Arsenal) but he has taken profit from all of his possessions. Yet you assume that Arsene has enough money?

The club as it stands has an ethos of profitability based on performance. Why? Because it serves the bottom line well and because the market allows them too!

Its easy to point fingers at Arsene, and I agree he is with fault but I challenge you to name one manager who can handle the construct of our club as it currently stands (A balance of profitability and performance).

Perhaps the real fault lies here with us, the supporters who fill the stadium each and every week buying the most expensive ticket in the land.

Metal its easy to note flaws in a person, but its not easy to always see their true value until either they're gone or until the truth in full is known.

Until you or anyone can show me that we as a club and Arsene as a manager has the green light to spend indiscriminately to win a championship then and only then will I believe that Arsene is to blame!

Until that time I would focus my frustration at the owner, its too easy to blame Arsene. The board knows this, the owner knows this and thats why he will remain the manager of the club until he chooses because they know his true worth!

Gunners4Life, the point of this post was to directly respond to one of Stoner's but also to simply highlight, in my own opinion, why I think Wenger is letting the club down purely in footballing terms.

As you have noted this post has not mentioned anything to do with the board.

I know how you feel about Wenger - and whilst I have to respect everyone opinion on here, I just cannot understand how people can take the attitude of 'but if he left everything would fall apart' and 'you don't know hat you've got til it's gone' - I just don't buy it. It's not as though we've had different problems to contend with every year. We haven't. It's been the same problems every season. Player sales, followed by injuries - consistent injuries, and then worse and worse players joining the club, more and more missed opportunities in the market, the quality of the football decreasing every year, the predictability with which we fail to turn up, fail to cope with pressure, you name it, we've had the problem. People have been predicting problems for years and years later, they're coming to fruition because Wenger is simply losing touch with the modern game. There is no other way of looking at it. His nemesis Fergie proves it. Fergie adapts every year. He considers who is getting better, and why. He considers how the league is developing. He plays it like chess, considers his next move and consideres how to stay a step ahead. On top of that, what counts for more than anything, he keeps the Man U machine moving. People everywhere believe this squad is the worst he's had for a long time - and everyone knows City and Chelsea have got stronger - yet who is at the top? Man U do not understand how to lose - when it happens there's an inquest. Those players play like they'll die for him and they play as if winning the game is a formality and it's only a matter of time until they're ahead. That's not because pound for pound they're so much better than some teams - it's because he has adapted and learned how to harness the modern footballer. He can sell prestige to Welbeck and have him play for £15k per week. If he were at Arsenal he'd be flopping at £50k per week as a general rule.

Elsewhere I might do a post on the board but this was specifically why Wenger is clearly no longer what we need. I'm not saying sack him now - I think he should leave at the end of the season with his head held high. And if we fail to land top 4, I expect the new manager to come in and spend a lot of money given to him by a willing board to get us back into the top 4.

This won't happen though - because the board are who they are, and that's another post for another time!

The owner is to blame, the board is to blame, the manager is to blame. That is it. Anyone saying that Arsene is not to blame, in my opinion, is not wise.

Sick of hearing that players are upset with the way the club is run, and unhappy that other players have left, utter rubbish! TV5 should step up to the plate, he is paid a huge amount of money to do a job, in any workplace if your workmates leave you still have to get on with your job.

If he is struggling with the captaincy, hand it back, he's probably only ahead of koscielny because he is captain, if he wasn't kos would be first choice on form.

wenger will always try to turn a rough diamond into a shining jewel - it can only work so many times- these days every team is on the lookout for the next big thing - every big club has scouts across the world looking for talent - they have all cottoned on to wenger's style and have become better because they are willing to spend money.
wenger is too stubborn to realise that certain players are not good enough for the club never mind the first X1( i think everybody knows who they are i just get tired of writing their names all the time), but he will insist on playing them hoping they will turn on a performance while our once rivals are 15-16 points ahead of us. When you go public and say 4th is good enough it will rub off onto players who will switch off during a game because the boss doesn't mind, managers like fergie, mourinho and even mancini you would never hear a statement like that from them. Statements like that drive away players like rvp and fabregas and deter quality players joining us, that is why we always get the leftovers no one wants ( you know the names i cant be bothered to write them). we have the funds - no one is saying go bankrupt but please have the decency to respect the very people who pay for the stadium, board and players lifestyles _THE FANS!
For the last 7 seasons most of us have been saying that the January transfer window will be wengers most important, but god help us, this one is really do or die time for wenger imo. We can't carry on feeding our rivals with players we have brought up through the ranks and help our rivals win honours we need to secure their futures and help US win trophies. A selling club will eventually lose its buying power potential of world stars. Arsenal should not be a selling club, full stop. We are up there with all the giants of Europe if we adapt our buying policy.
Silent stan, ivan gazidas are the grim reapers of this club, what is the use of having so much profit if the fans are going home booing the team they love, watching players go through the motions showing no fight bar the likes of jack ox szecs and a few others. Wenger is running the club like a business not as a manager/coach he has been sucked into the boardroom world where profit is the do all and end all, i agree we should buy within our means but a club like arsenal should not have squeaky b*m time with 25- 30 million offers.
At the start of the season bouldy was getting all the accolades of transforming our defence, since the headlines appeared our defence has disappeared. I don't know whats wrong with the coaching or there is a rift in the camp like so many ex stars have said, wenger needs to put his cards on the table and let his players and staff know whats happening.
All i can say is i hope and pray we don't sell theo, we buy a quality steely midfielder and defender and a proven goalscorer to help giroud in a 442 formation, and get rid of the endless amount of sh*te we are carrying at the club which is draining our finances. Most importantly the players begin to show the passion and fight from the start of the whistle till the end. Then and only then can wenger show his true feelings about a club he helped transform - i just hope he doesn't destroy it and his legacy!

Top 5 most successful dribblers in the prem this season.

I think some people need to pack their player judgements in saying certain players aren't good enough AHEM Diame, AHEM Ben Arfa. You're the same people who said Sinclair should be at a top 4 team and Moses shouldn't...it's embarrassing. I fail to see how a player can shred our team, then almost every other team he plays against including Chelsea, United, Newcastle, City, Liverpool and Spurs and yet not be good enough for us? Anyone who thinks Wenger is responsible for the current tragi-comedy is living and breathing absurdity. Everything that has transpired: the loss of our best (and world class) players; the bizarre transfer policy and the appalling lack of ambition rests with the board. One would have to conclude that Wenger is a lunatic if he doesn't want to keep his best players and add additional world class ones like he has in the past. Of course he does, he is not an person. The boards transfer policy is the root cause of the present malaise and Wenger will not resign because his heart is with the club. Why else would he turn down PSG, Real and every other major club that has courted his services.

The players Wenger has are not comparable to the teams of 2000, 01, 02, 03, 04 and before. Do people really think that he wants a less talented squad? The results reflect what he has on the pitch and the bottom line with a few exceptions, this squad is the weakest for quite some time!

Believable16 Unbelievable7

The squad is weakest for some time. Wenger buys the players to make the squad. Gervinho and Ramsay playing together in same time is Wengers choice. For someone who isn't to blame he's playing a massive part in ruining this club

Agree11 Disagree2

Another deluded AKB. It's not just the board's policy, Wenger is just as responsible as them for this debacle.
Any world class manager with an ounce of pride would not have let their board dictate to them who to buy/sell without putting up a fight or give an ultimatum.
AW said earlier this is one of his strongest teams he has had. You say it's his weakest, who's the deluded one?

Wenger is the one whoo buys below average players every season.had he just spent the money on 1-2 quality players a season rather than 3-4dross players, are. Situation would not be like it is

Agree7 Disagree3

Ermm...he isn't completely clean here. he does have a rigid system in place, he does prefer bargains and can be a stubborn SOB at times. some of his purchases have been questionable despite the larger amount of success he's brought with his transfer style.

his tactics, recently, show sign on age and lack of adaptation.

contrary to what people have it believed, Wenger has changed the style a bit. we're no longer bombing forward as much from the flanks instead opting for a central approach. the defense lies deeper than previous years and the attack is stretched laterally instead of along the width. this hasn't worked out well so far, but he has tried changing things up. considering this change, it still isn't adaptation of styles as it is a mere attempt to mix things up.

psychocyst.

15 Dec 2012 15:12:29
Fact is we need players like Cavani but we wont get them as much as the fans say if we have 30million spend it signal our intent. Think about it why would he join us and not from the point of a view of a supporter. He already has big wages, champions league football a team higher in their league than us and is competing for more silverware and has a more realistic chance of winning it and won something with Napoli last season.

The quality of our squad gets worse and worse, and it's got to the point where that combined with us not winning for so long, that, even if we have all this money we are said to, the best players out there wont sign for us. Two of our latest signings Cazorla and Podolski are both said to be unhappy in the press, the first at us not replacing RVP the second at being played out of position for Gervinho. Yet again we haven't addressed issues that are their year after year like needing a defensive midfielder, yet again we have sold our best players and not replaced them properly or with equal quality, yet again the club take this high and mighty stance about the profit we make like any of our rivals or the players who left us for better wages and silverware really care, and do you honestly think in two years we will have this magic fix or that FFP will sort it out UEFA need team like United, Chelsea and Madrid it is they who people want to watch in the champions league and as such make them their money, and the way we are going do people even see us in the Champions league in the near future? Yet again Wenger talks the youth up, what youth though we only have two players from the Academy in our squad and our best young prospects were all signed from other clubs academies at 16/17. Our Tactics and game plan are one dimensional with players out of position. We have players on big wages not playing costing the club big money, yet we refuse to offer competitive high end wages, Bayern Munich's wage bill is less than us and look at the players they have, and what they have achieved in the last three years. We sign rubbish like Gervinho and suffer while Wenger keeps sticking with him and many others, a Journalist today even picked Wenger up about signing high profile duds and mention Gervinho. We have a Majority share holder who says nothing and the second biggest who isn't even allowed on the board but was sold shares by David Dein a fan favourite. We don't even have one big named player that other teams are worried about and their fans are jealous of. Do I need to continue and take about ticket prices or moving to a new stadium to be more competitive etc or the huge masses of money we are said to have but never spend? Face it there is more wrong with this club than there is right at the moment and the first thing that needs to be address is the board coming out and being honest with the fans. I'll probably get dislikes but I don't mind, all I want is this club back to its best, take a look at the players who have left us recently compared to what we have brought in, and the number of empty promises we hear year after year or the number of people who say if we had RVP still we probably wouldn't have Cazorla, why not though surely a club wanting to improve would.
I should point out I would like us to sign Cavani and would be happy if we did, but I'm not kidding myself we wont and even if we did it would take more than one player of his quality to take us back to where we were 7-10 years ago.

If you are a real quality player, u r only going to move for one of two reasons.
Either because you are going to increase your chances of winning something, or
Because you are going to increase your wages.
As Arsenal currently offer neither, its easy to see why players like mata, hazard are refusing to join us and why players like clichy, nasri and Rvp are ultimatley drawn to other clubs.
Nasri knew he wouldnt start every game as he did at arsenal but he has more money a league winners medal, u might not like him, but he got what he wanted and i dont think he cares if u like him.
Arsenal need to make a big decision very soon, either aim to be a top european side as they promised, or get used to mid table obscurity.

Absolutely. The days of the one club player (e.g Adams) are long since. We inhabit, for the most part, an imaginary market where we think our stature and history will command loyalty from players. Play 442
Giroud and Theo up front - get another striker also knowing that Pod can slip in there also

Play Santi in Pires old role on left

Get a quality right winger

Play Jack and a new Beast in central midfield. Keep Arteta, Rosicky and even Ramsey as back up

Back 4 is good if we add a new left back.

So Striker, central midfield beast plus left back.

Use the rest plus the quality youngster as back up.

Just 3 players - 10m on left back, 15m on central midfield and 25m on striker plus wages.

Not huge changes but what we need plus would love to see Theo playing and running onto flick ons, short passes from Sant and Jack etc.

Would also like to leave Theo plus striker up front when opposition has corners to scare the crap out of them and force them to leave 3 or 4 back to defend counter and help defence out like the good old days of Cole, Pires and Henry

.................GK.................
RB.......CB..........CB........LB
.............Wanyama............
..Ben Arfa...Jack......Santi...
..........Theo..Pod/Gir..........

I would love that.

Arteta, The Ox, Rosicky, Podolski, New ST could rotate those 6 positions.

Exactly - speed and creativity from all over the pitch and two different types of front men to challenge and torment the centre halves!

Would not disrupt the team spirit or require too many changes

The bench with Arteta, Rosicky, Ox, Pod and TV or Kos would be great too

I have also been asking this question for years.

Last season Aneke was heralded as the next Yaya. So what do we do? Loan him out to a team who don't play our style, who give him as little a chance as he'd have got here. He should have just stayed and been given a shot in prem games and cup games. Why is Afobe STILL not in the first team set up?

JET was a handful but he had raw talent like few others. We binned him because of one or two behavioural things or something and that is just nonsense. You telling me we'd be worse off is JET had been played instead of Gervinho? My arse.

Ozyakup - what a player. He got good and we sold him. This youth thing is a total red herring - West Brom's youth have been better than ours for some time, Chelsea's is amazing as well, City will be bringing through the best English talent in a few years and we have got one player to show for it, Jack.

It's also embarrassing how many players have played for us at one stage or another. Every game, in every league, seems to have 'xxx who of course was an arsenal youth product' - GREAT! He ended up doing well then, he plays for Accrington!

Metal Gooner

Loaning out our young players has not worked, the only exception was Jack to Bolton EVERYONE else has gone backwards.

No chance of signing anyone world class - who in that bracket would go to a club that won't win anything? That leaves us chasing good players - for them to come they they would need to see Arsenal as a step up. However, the current perception of the club is of one that is in dissaray on the field and uncaring about football off the field. We don't even have that flair and incision of a few years ago or CL participation to offer. Consequently I do not see anyone who could make a real difference coming. They may shuffle the personnel a little to placate the supporters but any ins and outs will be like for like.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

I completely agree - I cannot understand why a footballer would want to come to us apart from to simply play against the likes of city, Chelsea and United.

It's funny how some people were saying this for years - that if this decline continued it would get to the point where we would miss out on generations of new fans who now all support Chelsea etc and also that big stars would not want to join us because there are no stars here...and we won't even bait them with wages. We've screwed ourselves!

Its obvious our managers obsession with not spending what is unfortunatley the going rate. Wages play a minor role in all of this because if we have the money to pay Squillaci, Park, Chamakh a combined 120k+ to do nothing, then we definatley had the money to pay someone like Mata to change games for us.

wenger does not spend money he only deals with prospects and the odd very good player.
he will never spend big money and wages on a player even though the fund are there!

there is money there and he will never spend big on quality its not in his d.n.a!

only way you will get star players is by having a new manager!

champagne charlie

Believable1 Unbelievable8

Refused? no. perhaps laughed at or told to sell off half the squad to generate the amount.

riddle me this, Mr. Disgruntled-
we've had a known interest in Hazard for years now. Wenger's publicly praised him many times over and we've made polite enquiries a few times only to be told that the club's not willing to sell or the player doesn't want to move yet. same goes for quite a lot of people. why do you think Gazidis just didn't get the check book out and splash the cash without consulting Wenger directly about it?

now, before you argue some sort of power struggle, what's the worst Wenger could've done in reaction? not played the player? somehow gotten Gazidis fired? thrown a hissy-fit? left the club?

psychocyst. {Ed002's Note - Arsenal made an offer for Hazard some time ago and it was rejected.}

Agree3 Disagree0

I know that, Ed. when i said "splash the cash", i meant the kind of silly money spending that makes teams bite your hand off with an offer. we bid something between 15-odd million the year he won the player of the year in the french league the first time and it was never going to be accepted but 25-30 million would've turned some heads, no?

my argument is that we always big 5-10 million lower than the team's evaluation in typical Wenger fashion to make a bargain deal. upper management could just as well add that extra bundle of notes to get stuff done but they seem content with how things work.

psychocyst.

Agree1 Disagree0

Psychocyst it has not worked!1

he has failed, we have gone back wards for 8 years.

the footballis not good any more and he will never change his philosophy.

no manager at big club would survive.

do you think wenger would of lasted at barcelona for 8 years?

champagne charlie

Agree1 Disagree1

Psychocyst I would say it seems to be that they are both as bad as each other. Gazidis does not want to spend the money - he says it's there and leaves it to the manager - who also doesn't want to spend the money. When did Wenger suddenly decide that he did not even want to spend money that we have made? He bangs on and on about using our own resources - well we have £70m of our own resources there. Not Stan's or Usmanov's. Our OWN. And Wenger will NOT spend it because of HIS morals or beliefs - his own personal ethos is stifling the success of this club and the worst part is that we have worked and sold to be able to make that money in the first place. Yet he won't spend it.

The constant debate is chicken-egg-esque in that we have a manager who doesn't want to spend, yet when he does, he's shocking, he won't pay 15m for a striker but he'll pay 12m rising to 15 for a kid who still isn't a regular starter in the first team. He's just a t***. The other side is that the board couldn't care less, if he doesn't spend then great! Their remit is clearly FINANCIAL and not about footballing success.

I am not saying we make money badly. I am saying we use it badly, we hoard it, the fans get lied to, and it just sits there whilst we play and pay terrible players and ignore great deals. We have a manager who puts his own beliefs ahead of success, his coaching has gone to rat shyte and the board allow him total freedom and reward his mediocrity. So they are all as bad as each other.

If Wenger does not spend that money and make big signings - well a club with its house in order would take action for failing to capitalize on a golden opportunity to strengthen our assets and potentially earn more. The simple fact that he is his own judge, that the board do not question his signings and lack of spending or failure to re-jig the wages to be able to afford Mata etc is criminal.

They are all as bad as each other. There are a milliong things Wenger could do differently but doesn't, and it's the board's job to make sure he does but they don't. I am not saying it's just Wenger, but a lot of it is and it does my head in that people still don't get this. Listen to his comments!

Metal Gooner

Agree4 Disagree0

I wouldn't say it hasn't worked. it isn't working right now. his stubborn style did work in the past because our players were smart and skilled enough as a cohesive unit to pull it off.
it's isn't working with the current batch and it never got a decent chance with the developing batch.

you conveniently feel it a logically fit question to ask if a manager would've survived in a different club completely ignoring everything else. would Wenger survive without success at any club aspiring to win trophies? no, of course not.
but then he'd have Messi, Xavi and Iniesta at his disposal without worrying about their contracts and transfer fees so who's to say he wouldn't be winning?

we've been rather non-competitive for about 4-5 years now, not the entire 8 year spell that will end after this season (which is still undecided). it's unfair to pigeon-hole every single season after '05 to be a waste of time for us. a lot of us Arsenal fans were aware that a move to new stadium would mean in a tighter purse. and despite all our ex-players and media pundits and reporters calling for his head, i've yet to hear a player who actually has played under Wenger to say he's a dictatorial a$$hole who doesn't understand $hit that he's doing *cough Ray Parlour cough*.

psychocyst.

Agree0 Disagree0

Is it Wenger's job to personally see out ever contract deal? wouldn't a club as big as ours have people for this purpose?

like, Wenger points a finger or drops a name and our people go after the player. Wenger steps in to explain the footballing aspect while the number crunching aspect is left out to other people who work on the non-footballing aspect of things. wasn't that what David Dein did so marvelously? isn't that why AVB stays back in London helping the team train while Daniel Levy flies into Amsterdam to work on the 'how to get his signature' part?
isn't this also what Wenger mentioned about Walcott's situation. that those two spoke about the football stuff and were happy with it and Theo's agent and people at the club were talking numbers over the contract?

is it just me who's seeing this?

now according to your whacko theories, Wenger could not get complete control unless everyone else figured they couldn't care less and let him do what he thinks is right.
so do you blame the guy who's (supposedly) running his own show under the delusion he can help the club get back to winning ways or do you blame the people in power who give his this authority when they have it in their power to stop him?

psychocyst.

Agree0 Disagree0

Psychocyst chill out with comments like 'wacko theories' - it's not your place to call anyone on this site wacko.

Secondly, I believe they are all equally to blame. From the scouts, to the choices, to whoever it is who oversees the deals and puts the contracts together. They are all playing their part in the decline of the quality of the players and football at the club. A manager who's lost the plot is just as bad as the person who is supposed to ensure he does his job but won't. And the owner of the club is as bad as them both if he in turn does not oversee the lot.

cazorla-if we was world class he would be playing for mardid or barcelona.£75k a week.

giroud-french top goal scorer,prospect.£60k a week.

replacements for rvp and song.1 world class forward and a dm player who played nearly every game for us last season.

Although i get were your coming from its not right to suggest Podolski should be tearing players apart when hes played out of position, unless im mistaken he spends most of his time helping Gibbs out at lb,
Giroud... yes top scorer in France last season, yet expected to play up front on his own in a much faster paced and physical league, gonna take him time to settle.
Santi Cazorla... is the real deal, you cannot tell me cesc, nasri, rvp, song never had a bad game or run of form, he too is settling in to the EPL.

The point being we as a fans are desperate to get the big name players in every window, in their own right Podolski, Giroud, and Santi are big name players, coming from other countries they are gonna need time to settle in, Just look at Merts and Kos as an example, shaky in their frist season yet quality there after. People are awake we do see and there are countless opinions on here some are bollox some are sense and some are just plain stupid.

It's like the team is the team, so we talk about it, who we should buy, Arsene, Ramsey and Gervinho, Silent Stan and so on but I'm pretty certain nothing we talk about on hear will make a flying f**k of a difference as to what happens or not in the inner sanctum of the club.

to all you people thinking we have cash TO SPEND ON NEW PLAYERS-

any sort of profits or generated revenue we've displayed over past few years has been largely in part due to our inability to hold players down at the club.
the latest stunt pulled was Gazidis passing the '70 million' number afloat via Tim Payton of the Supporters' Trust without committing to it himself.

i'm in no terms denying that there could possibly be money available to be used on fresh personnel, but i question the conviction of the board to let it be used just as much as i question Wenger's logic of not chucking in the extra 1-2 million to make the deal happen.

my point might seem clearer if you've heard of the situation at the US snack-making brand Hostess.
the company was running through a tough financial time, so they get in a new CEO to balance the ship. the convinced the workers to take an 8% paycut because supposedly "there was no money available" for all the workers to be paid. almost comically, the CEO gave himself a 300% raise.

then, when the workers' union finally felt they were being cheated enough, they went on strike as a protest. now, what did the company do? they declared bankruptcy and cut and ran.

were the workers wrong in protesting? did the union leaders fail them? or were the fat cats running the show just not bothered about what was happening?

i don't question the capacity of the club to pool finances together and buy highly-rated talent we need or offer better contracts to top performers, i doubt their dedication to the cause to carry it out.

sure, Wenger's not helping by suggesting we limit the pay-outs or not spend silly money on players, but it's the board's duty to take in that suggestion and act how they think is best.

Agree9 Disagree0

If he loved the club he could of fought for better wages and a better quality of player that was bought!

he chose those players that come and go.

the money in the bank shows we can afford it?

the club is suppose to be run on sustainable level!

he stays because he has the final say on everything to do with players,he does what he wants.

champagne charlie

Agree0 Disagree4

His idea of better wages is a good competitive level of pay for the first teamers instead of one guy on 10-20 thousand while another on 200 thousand a week. he's obviously prefers a more middle-ground approach. it's why you have people like NB52 and Chamakh on fat paychecks for doing little. Wenger's guilty of idealism, i'll give you that.
the people coming in also depends on how much the club wants to pay. i don't see Wenger spending 30 mil, but apparently we made a bluff bid for Goetze (this summer, right?) anyways. there is nothing transparent about what's happening in terms of finanaces. to pick side on the fence like you do is the same as religious fanatics claiming their idea of god to be perfect or atheist fanboys being dead-sure of the non-existence of any idea of god.

and Charlie, i get the idea of being frustrated and angry at the way the club's going, but i'd honestly prefer the boo-boys who simple hate the entire system in place- players included- because the results are not right over you because you seem so certain on the fact that there is only one guy at the root of the problem when in reality, it's been years since anything has been clear about what's wrong at the club. emotions aside, a little skepticism will do you some good, mate.
