Look forward to getting to Shanks Ed001, top top manager and fantastic character I never tire of reading about.

{Ed001's Note - that one will end up being a full book!}

Put me down for a copy mate, absolutely love the brilliant stories about him, like getting Ron Yates a job as a lifeguard on Southport beach for the summer only to be informed later that Ron couldn't actually swim.
Shanks response " swim, why would he need to swim, have you seen the size of the man? He can wade out for a mile and a half "
Brilliant :-)

{Ed001's Note - he used to go out playing footie with the local kids all evening. Nessie would just have to put his tea in the oven to keep it warm.

She was footie obsessed too, her and my Auntie May used to go to the games together when they were both alive bless em. Nessie was great too, but you would have to be special to put up with a man like him!}

15 Oct 2017 18:54:55
It's illegal to be a man like him now lol. You wonder where the next shanks are? It's not possible anymore. Great man and if there was a stencil where can I buy one.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - stencil?}

Ha yes ed. a blueprint . My father is a huge Liverpool fan and both shankly and my grandfather died almost a year to the day before I was born. My dad jests who he would have preferred me to meet.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - ahhh got you, sorry. I wasn't thinking clearly then, should have realised what you meant.}

15 Oct 2017 19:46:11
I didn't understand it clearly the first time either Ed :-) thanks for clearing it up Sanogo mate, your 100% right Shanks wouldn't be allowed to flourish in today's game mate.
Like when he used to call Emlyn Hughes up each Sunday to say how delighted he was with him and the progress he was making.
Emlyn said " I was both extremely flatter and confused by Shanks calls each Sunday morning, as I was a Blackpool player at the time :-)
They'd call it tapping up now I guess, which I suppose it was in Shanks own fantastic way :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - bloody hell, so that's where Klopp got it from this summer!}

15 Oct 2017 19:51:23
He always goes on about how shankly paved the way for English (British ) football in Europe and how that was passed on to paisley. That's when a manager was a real manager. Nowadays there's so many other variables that make it hard to judge how good a manager is! But then you had players and math and that was it. Ferguson was probably the last great of this method and still dominated into the new era . Lovely read ed.

I do like klopp. Have always said Arsenal missed a trick there.

I like Klopp too mate, no one can doubt his passion and enthusiasm for the game or that he doesn't have a real desire to make Liverpool great again, I don't think champions league participation would ever be enough for him I think he came to England to win the premier league at least.
Whether he can achieve that is another matter but he won't be happy to simply make up the numbers.

Shankley talking to an injured player on the treatment table

Shanks " what's the matter with you? "
Player " I've hurt my knee boss "
Shanks " I beg your pardon '
Player repeats " I've hurt my knee "
Shanks " who's knee, you've hurt who's knee?, I think you'll find that's Liverpool football clubs knee your talking about "
Top class :-) apparently the Liverpool players used to try and hide their injuries from him because they didn't want Shanks to be annoyed with them for not being 100% for Liverpool each and every game.

Ozil out.

kdb ozil debate finally put the bed I hope. absolute non contest.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Oct 2017 18:00:20
The thing about KDB is that he offers more than just assists. I've said it before and that the team needs to be built around ozil! And also the style of play needs to be built around him and if players of quality were put around him then you would see a superior ozil.

The thing about all of Cities star players is they all offer more, every one of them works for the team. De Bruyne is exceptional.

When you can bring on Bernardo Silva, Toure, Gundogan and Aguero you have got some team, maybe even Sanchez come January.

Even at his age Yaya would be a plus to our midfield.

Attitude work rate commitment, these are all the things we keep hearing time after time about this Arsenal squad.
They said exactly the same about Barcelona and the invincibles but unfortunately for the class of 2017 the exact same words are used in a completely different contexts when referring to them.
What is so wrong at the club this keeps happening? I'm sure it's not a collective decision by the players to give yet another performance that gets them humiliated by the media and I'm equally sure Arsene doesn't send them out to do so either, just how can they be quite so poor quite so often and more importantly why is it always effort commitment passion that people are questioning time and time again?

Troy Deaneys assesment of Arsenal after the game is spot on as was his very same assessment on motd 2 a couple of seasons back.
If players look forward to playing against you because they know your weaknesses then how long before we accept and address those weaknesses ourselfs.
Surely it's time to listen to what others say about why they get excited rather than nervous playing Arsenal these days.

Great summary. Always been a fan of draxler he is exciting to watch on his day. But my favourite German by far Marco reus has had a nightmare with injurys and it's such a shame because I believe if he didn't have those injurys and played to the level he can he would easily be recognised as one of the top 5 attacking players in the world.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate. Reus is certainly one hell of a player when fit.}

It's a shame ed I have a feeling that reus career is going to pass him by.

not seen ozil get much stick for the chance he hit straight at the goalie when he was 1 on 1

i know for a fact if that was ramsey, welbeck, or giroud it'd be a different story.

Would it really make you feel better if Mesut got more stick Mark?
Would it take away all the other weaknesses that we have if everyone put the blame firmly on Ozils shoulders?
The fact no one has mentioned it is because everyone knows yesterday wasn't because of one mistake by anyone Mesut the Ref or either lineman it was an accumulation of many many problems that have been well and truly catalogued over the years.
There are no more excuses left in the credibility cupboard and we are left with simple in excusable reasons for our situation.

g62 i was going to add to my post that i wasn't blaming ozil for the defeat, although it seems like i am. i know the problems lie deeper than what happened yesterday.

i was just pointing out that if it was one of the players i mentioned who done that, they would have got slaughtered.

15 Oct 2017 17:27:00
To be fair Mark I think most people are now well and truly done with looking for scapegoats in these games, I doubt there are many people left who are prepared to accept all is well and only a single error by an individual is responsible for our woes.
We have to accept that there is an accumulation of problems running through the club if things are to change.
For now i say go all out for the Europa Europa league and treat it with same respect as the league Because if we put all our eggs in the 4th place trophy basket we might well regret it as early as March April.

I know people are disappointed but in reality we are not much different to any other season so it's unrealistic to expect things to turn out much differently.
We will undoubtedly have some really good days during the season and some really poor ones too but there is little point in getting too upset about things turning out as we all expected they would.
Change will happen eventually and until it does enjoy the good days and accept the bad ones is the only way.

It's not that we loose a game mate, everyone looses games. It's the manner of defeat we are fed up with. Players walking the ball around, watchimg the ball roll past them and looking at opposition players standing in a massive great hole and not bothering to defend the ball coming thru. They are far to comfortable no one is to blame. It's all a matter of oh dear never mind better luck next time.
This is Wenger team he has spent a lot, for once and it's mainly very poor? What's the point of marking, say, 500 passes and 69%possiesion and loose! Effective passes and some pressure on the opposition would help.
All you have to do is sit back 2 banks of 4 let us pass across back side to side and hit us on the break! Everyone knows it and he won't change it.

Unfortunately mate it's all pretty standard Arsenal that we've come to know and reluctantly accept, losing at Liverpool and Stoke was no great surprise to anyone although getting a point at Chelsea was fantastic it's been leveled out now by a poor defeat at Watford.
Everything at Arsenal is very usual even if we find it unacceptable it's still par for the course stuff that we have come to know from the team for a decade and more.
We are no worse than usual the difference is Utd are back and Spurs have kicked on to their highest level for decades making even the 4th place and above spurs security blanket look a little thread bare and possibly no longer serviceable.
Arsene has 2 more seasons and will absolutely not be sacked and equally will not quit so in my opinion the best course of action is simple acceptance of the situation because no matter what any of think, it is what it is and change is a minimum of 2 years away.
