Just a quick question guys n girls. After a season of watching Welbeck play for your club, what do you now feel about him as a player?

Personally, I would have been happy to keep him as a home grown squad player, but he didn't have the quality needed to be a regular. He was very quick and worked hard, but his control, passing and finishing were dire and didn't improve whilst in our first team squad, for me. That said, having met him a few times, he seems a genuinely nice guy, and I don't hold leaving for regular first team football against him. Will he get that at Arsenal though, even when he is injury free for a while?

Interested to hear your views after a season, as i don't see much of Arsenal to judge.

At the moment he's an asset to have in the squad no doubt about that, he puts in a shift without fail and can change a game when coming off the bench.
Can he win a regular place in the starting 11? Its difficult to see but who would have guested this time last year that Le Coq would become undropable?
Its a funny old game.

When he signed I was devastated called him from pig to a dog (I also never really watched him at United ) but I had warmed to him especially after the superb hat trick he scored ( and it was superb) so I feel the same as g62. It could be easy to level criticism towards him but I genuinely think he's ok!

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 21:59:39
He's boring on and off the pitch, nothing wrong with the way he plays, it's just we're a bit of a special football club, like United, and he's not a special player

Agree1 Disagree1

19 Jun 2015 22:08:36
He seems like a nice guy, and he tries his best everytime I see him play. Unfortunately, his best is nowhere near enough. A good squad player that puts in a fine shift, but he just never looks like he's going to score any goals. Didn't think he was good enough for United, don't think he's good enough for England or Arsenal. I totally understand why we bought him what with Giroud breaking his leg just before the transfer deadline, but I'm constantly hoping he won't be in the starting 11 and asking for him to be subbed off first. I imagine he'll leave next summer once he realises he's never going to get a game.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 23:06:46
Decent player.

Seems to play better in an England shirt than an Arsenal shirt.

But, glad he's onboard.

Valuable squad member who can play anywhere up top.

I'm never disappointed if he is in starting 11 because he always puts a shift in.

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 23:13:58
Seems like he's in precisely the same place he was when he left United. As others have said, a good, versatile squad option but never first choice Imo.

If that truly is what he wants he needs to leave for a team below the top 5/6 at some stage.

Nice guy and professional too Bu that doesn't cut it at the highest level.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 23:53:50
Forgot to say, yeah Danny also comes across as genuinely nice lad with his feet on the ground and a real appreciation and love of football.
Whether playing for England Arsenal and when with utd he may not always be the best but always gives his best and for me its always good to have players like that around.

{Ed007's Note - Put that post through Google translate and it comes up as Bull$h!ttishness for 'he's garbage but I'm not going to admit it'.}

I don't know ed. There's a similar worry about Walcott every now and then you get glimpses. With welbeck he always seems to try and do to much. Carry the ball further than possible or try a cheeky flick or has a poor first touch.

Will either of those two terrorise defences week in week out I doubt it. But what do you do. They play from the bench and add pace when teams are tired. You need that . But will they be satisfied doing that and do we need both?!?

Questions questions

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jun 2015 03:55:46
Bit harsh 007, he's nothing special but he'd walk into the celtic team!
PS: Nice to see you on the Arsenal page, you're usually good craic

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - to be fair, Ed007 could walk into the Celtic team on his crutches the way Scottish footie is going lately......

Seriously though, he does have a point, Welbeck is simply not good enough for Arsenal, or any team intending to win trophies. He will end up sitting on the bench each week, or drop down the league. If he was not tall and quick he would be playing in League 2 on ability level, his touch is appalling. Whereas Walcott clearly has ability, though again it is his pace that makes the real difference, he does have a predator's eye for goal, while Welbeck lacks it.}

20 Jun 2015 09:49:18
Thats underselling Theo, he is a step above in effectiveness Imo

Its Wellbeck's pace/power that makes people assume he's capable of more but he doesn't have the composure or technical ability to take advantage of it

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jun 2015 11:25:09
But all agreed walcotts the better man. But again can you see walcott doing it week in week out. Don't get me wrong I don't want him to go.

And I bet regardless of the fa cup goal Danny scored I bet all you Utd fans are glad it was not another pogba scenario and are quite smug about the whole thing

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jun 2015 11:48:18
Welbeck has had an average season and like at man u, he hasn't got a best position he can concentrate on. Saf rated him highly, very highly, he has to improve and has the tools to do so. First touch and english footballers isn't a phrase that goes together, so like a lot of players in this country who play and get paid far too much for their inability to control a ball, he could improvenext season, I think its a big seasonfor him, he has to kick on.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Jun 2015 14:01:42
Browgun, it was never going to be a Pogba situation, it was obvious he wasn't in that league. No smugness though, he's a nice guy and wanted more 1st team opportunities, not sure he chose the right club though. I think somewhere like Southampton would have been a good choice for him personally.

I'd stick with him for another year. He has it in his locker, he just needs to focus and grow up a bit. But patience is wearing thin.

We don't need him, we have Diaby on a pay as you play deal

Only way I'd let them have Jack is if they swapped us Aguero.

To keep all happy I'd take 20 million and send them Jack Whitehall.
It would be hard to turn down 40 million especially when you think Sanchez cost us less and Mesut around the same, you'd have to snatch their gussets off double quick big time

Surely, Arteta cannot be our captain next season. I think he has fallen too far down the pecking order to be substantive captain. My choice:

The BFG! I think he a natural leader

Cech is looking very close now :-)
This will be the first time since Lehmann possibly even Seaman we have had a very top keeper and I'm convinced he will make a massive difference.
Its hard to remember a premier league winning team that didn't have a keeper who was among the best 4 keepers in the league, 7 or 8 extra points makes a huge difference at the end of the season.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

19 Jun 2015 08:30:50
I still don't believe we'll be getting Cech g62. This all sounds too familiar. Arsenal sign great player from rivals. Betting suspended etc. Then nothing. It would be a great signing though and would signal Arsene's first victory over Mourinho IMO

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 08:42:41
Very fair point that Davros mate but I hope and think this one will be different this time.
But I do think it's worth the likes of myself who are convinced Cech will join us calming down just in case.

19 Jun 2015 09:02:18
If you look who Ospina is being linked with I think it puts his ability into a little more perspective, don't get me wrong he did well for us but he's not a top keeper hence none of Europe's really big clubs are chasing him.
Just Galatasa? and man u have shown any interest so far.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 09:43:45
I think we'll get Cech.

Then two more signings and we're done.

If this happens, we'll go to Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford with expectation rather than hope...which will make a nice change.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 09:55:58
Whoever ends up with Cech will be making one of the best summer signings. I think his career arc from here on out could follow exactly what Van Der Sar's did when he joined us.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 12:19:40
Chech would be a top signing imo.

De Gea wants champs league, just like Rvp wanted a prem title!

19 Jun 2015 13:17:35
I remember shearer wanting FA cups and more leauge titles than his paltry 1. He had integrity that boy. Can't buy loyalty as you guys found out.

That would have been a painful time for the rest of us if managed to get him!

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 13:41:52
Dea gea is smart enough to know he can't play GK and defense all season long and has decided to play for a team that can let him just be a GK

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 06:52:48
Assuming we manage to sign the excellent Cech, I feel we only need a top notch defensive midfield player to complete a string squad, with plenty of options.
I am not certain we need a forward as we have Giroud, Welbeck, Walcott and Akpom, all whom can play the central strikers role.
My squad for next season would be:
G: Cech, Szczesny & Martinez
D: Bellerin, Debuchy, Chambers, Mertesacker, Gabriel, Koscielny, Gibbs & Monreal.
DM: Coquelin & Schneiderlin.
M: Wilshere, Ramsey, Cazorla, Ozil, Rosicky, Oxlade, Gnabry
F: Alexis, Walcott, Giroud, Welbeck & Akpom

That makes up the 25 man squad, although some players don't count as they are under 21 as at 10th January 2015, which I believe is the rule.

I would sell/release/loan: Ospina, Arteta, Flamini, Podolski, Jenkinson, Wellington, Hayden, Sanogo - Miyaichi & Abou Diaby have been released.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

19 Jun 2015 07:12:42
I think if we accept this is the season to judge us on one way or the other I'd go belt and braces with keeper CB DM striker.
Do we need them all? I'm not sure but we might be better off deciding we've got a couple too many in January and letting some go than getting found out in the first half of the season and the title being beyond us again by November.
But I think Cech and possibly Spyder is who we will get and then its up to Theo and Olly to prove Arsene right come next May.

Agree2 Disagree2

19 Jun 2015 09:03:43
gunner62 - I can't see us signing a CB, unless we sell one, if you include Chambers we have 4 options. We have 8 first team defenders, so cover for every position across the back four. There is an outside chances of making a signing, if we loan out Chambers to gain experience, although I wouldn't expect us to do so.
As for the attacking options, we have Giroud, Welbeck, Walcott, Alexis and if we don't loan them out, Akpom & Gnabry. At times last season Wenger played Ramsey & Wilshere wide, as well. We could at a squeeze sign another forward if Akpom & Gnabry are loaned out, but we already have a selction dilemna with 4 international strikers fitting into 3 places.

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 09:21:58
Looks a great squad RG69 when you write it out as it is!
As there may be some space left due to the home grown rules, you could add Bielik to it too.
I'm not sure we need a Schniederlin, Carvalho or Kondogbia, but wouldn't complain if we did buy one!
So Cech, maybe a DM and Benzema would make a happy summer for me!

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 09:22:53
Agree to all of the above and belt and braces approach would be the way. Anyone think we could really upgrade or LB because I do

Agree0 Disagree2

19 Jun 2015 10:08:50
Idealy yes Brow82 Moreal isn't a world beater but he's fast improving and left Gibbs in his tracks, but too much too soon could prove costly so I think 3 or 4 absolute Max and Gk then top striker and winger if at all possible being top priority then either DM or CB cover.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 10:11:26
A striker is CRUCIAL me thinks. Many times last season in tough games I thought we just lacked that extra something. The mad hatter, the guy who can do anything from anywhere. The guy who is a constant thorn in the side of our opponents.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 11:26:08
We need a striker. Welbeck is awful, Walcott cannot hold up the ball or win a header, and Giroud is a snail. I'm hoping Arsene pulls off the miracle of signing Benzema

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jun 2015 17:03:18
I think we all agree on an keeper and competition for Le Coq- but actual competition not back up. what i can not decide on is if i would rather a striker ( i am a giroud fan although a suarea, aguero i would take all day long. or a player like draxler, Reus, Griezmann as at time last season we played Ramsay, Wiltshire in that wide right role, look at the impact sanzhez has had in that opposite position in the left.. if someone cam in on the right and did that along with giroud and Walcott goals upfront i think that could make us just a dangerous as having a benzema or cavani.

Clyne valued at 15mil when chambers cost 16mil we got robbed

Believable0 Unbelievable2

19 Jun 2015 06:40:38
Chambers is 4 years younger than Clyne..... He is also more versatile, being able to play at right-back and centre back. At 20 years of age we need to be patient with Chambers, you only have to look at Coquelin as an example of waiting for a player to mature. Not many players are capable of playing for a top four premier league team.
