Well you spurs fans have to look forward to something. I sugest you get fully behind chelsea and try to just imagine what it feels like to be the supporter of a championship winning side. And then reality will come crashing down on you and you will wake up in a cold sweat and realise that it's something you have never or will ever see been a Spurs fan.

While a win tomorrow would be great and far better than a loss, but when all said and done it is another pre season friendly. Players are not 100% comitted by any means and do not want an injury before the season starts. They will be trying to get match fitness but they will not be eyeballs out at all. We beat a non comitted man city 3-0 last year and still finished behind in the league. Chelsea dominate our style of play and if we win tomorrow, it will mea zip until we beat them in the league, to show we can compete with them in a comitted meaningful game. Still want the win but we will wait for bragging rights a few more weeks.

Mourinho will lose little sleep should Arsene break his duck against him tomorrow but anything less than 4pts against us when the season starts for real would break his heart and be very very significant.
I expect a 0 0 or 1 1 draw tomorrow but a win would make a lovely change but count for nothing once the season is really underway.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2015 16:03:18
I disagree Steve, it is just a glorified friendly and will not determine Arsenals season.

However, beating Chesley would be huge psychologically going into the season. Firstly, arsenal have not beat them in forever and will want to win. Winning will let arsenal bring momentum into the season. Beating Chelsea in the cs gives the team onfidence for the league encounters. The sorry Wenger has never beaten Mou line keeps getting trotted out and the team will want to add an * beside that for the boss. It keeps our perfect record in preseason. Beating the runaway champions of England does send a message - that chelsea are vulnerable and arsenal are real challengers. Lastly, I think you are wrong about players -no they do not want injuries in the cs but beating your rival will motivate the players as will lifting a trophy while your rivals are forced to watch.

No neither team are at 100% and it does not count for points, both teams would recover quickly com a loss; but winning would mean a lot more to Arsenal than Chelsea

Agree4 Disagree0

01 Aug 2015 17:05:29
James I think we need to get mentally on par with Chelsea fans who would enjoy a win over us but read nothing into a defeat even if we thrashed them 5 0, it would just be seen as a preseason game.
Same for us, should we lose neither the players or us should let it dampen our mood for the league games v Chelsea in the slightest and if we win we certainly shouldn't get carried away by that either.
After city last season some people couldn't contain their excitement but it counted for nothing once the season started properly.

G62,

I respect your and Steve's opinion, but agree to disagree. Winners want to win - always no matter the nature of the game.

I get that neither team is at 100%, key players are missing (not purchased yet), but the Community Shield is a week before the season against one of your rivals and the team to beat for the title. If you are not up for that, there is a serious problem with your mentality.

All of our players and all of Chelsea's players will want to win the game. There is no other game on and, so, all your rivals will be tuned in and most neutral fans.

If you lose the game, you dress it up as a friendly and, with the experienced managers that Arsenal and Chelsea have, I think the teams recover mentally without any blip in week 1.

If you win, you have that added confidence headed into the season and a slight mental edge on the other team when you meet again. (Assuming you play well until then).

Of course, the game is meaningless unless you hit the ground running when you play the next week. As is beating Chelsea and then say, losing to Stoke away during the season.

So, I do not think wanting to win the CS is a "small club" mentality, you should want to win everything you play in - the "small club" mentality would be believing that it means more than it does.

I agree with you that, the result is not overly meaningful. (i.e. I am not planning a trip to London on the back of a cs victory or placing my savings on Arsenal to win the title).

I just think you and Steve undersold it a bit. Any chance you can take to beat your rival you should take and lifting silverware in their face is demoralizing to them and uplifting to you.

It is a small boost but a boost nonetheless and coupled with our strong end to 2014/15, strong pre-season, a cs win, would set us up nicely to start strong in 2015/16 and maybe, give us confidence at the Emirates and the Bridge against Chelsea.

At the end of the day, what we need is consistency (and a top striker and back-up for Le Coq [plus no injuries]).

Good luck tomorrow fellow Gooners! (Steve and G62 included)

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2015 18:56:41
Its a pre season jolly and a win in a pre season friendly is pretty meaningless after 5 minutes of celebration. No one will look back on the friendly for pointers or regrets only the real games. That said you want to see an effort put in and I think we will. But beating last seasons league winners 3-0 in the end meant zip all. I don't want to see us lose, but if we win tomorrow and lose in the league, it will be worse for me, but lose tomorrow and win in the league, well different ball game.

Fair enough James mate its always nice to see an Arsenal win as you say.
As long as we don't have a points deficit against Chelsea come next May I will be extremely happy and if we can manage to come out on top in our head to head laugue games with them then absolutely anything and everything is possible for us this season.

Let's make a statement on Sunday

If our squad is strong enough - then I don't want to see Ozil, Jack or Rambo playing left wing tomorrow

If we have poor wingers - it kills us offensively

Ozil must be in the middle and must have quality in front, to the sides and running from deep to truly get the best out of him

Do we need Reus then rather than Benzema as he could play anywhere along the front line and give us pace & quality options

There is talk of Akpom joining Hull on loan. Presumably this means a striker signing is on the cards.
Although we still have the following striking options:
Giroud, Welbeck & Walcott. At a stretch Sanchez can play the central role.
However, in my opinion, we have Walcott and Oxlade on the right. Sanchez and Welbeck on the left, yet only Giroud for the central role, hence a signing is likely.

i agree i'm not saying i want them guys i'm just saying if we can't have

benzema/ibrahimovic/lewandowski

carvallho/busquets/bedner/kovacic

then why pay monney for second rate players. when there's players out there on free's

TBH i can't see any of the above coming.

I am so excited with the new season nearly upon us. For the first time in years, we have a seriously strong squad with two quality players for virtually every position. We need a defensive midfield player and a serious striker to give us the strongest squad in Wenger's reign. The invincibles was a great team, but the squad lacked in depth.
Great news that Walcott and Cazorla signed new contracts. There is a really good feeling emerging from The Emirates. It will be interesting to see the team Wenger selects. Indeed, when Ospina, Sanchez, Welbeck and Rosicky return, we will be spoilt for choice.

The Charity shield is not just another friendly. There is a shield to be won. I believe both managers will come out guns blazing. If both teams field their best available starting eleven, have we done enough in the window to believe we are stronger than last season?

Scoring against Chelsea (especially Mourinho's chelsea ) has always been a struggle for us. What cold hard facts can we rely on to argue that we are more of an attacking threat this season?

Over to you fellas...

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - the fact is rue..that you are not, if giroud picks up an injury then toothless tigers come to mind, some will say play alexi or theo up top but thats not the answer for me mate, yes they can be dangerous and can score goals, but being a a CF is much more than that..but we will see..

01 Aug 2015 11:45:30
We've got better defensively, but it's all well and good conceding a few less if you don't capitalise and score more too.

We missed goals from Ramsey last season, with his injuries and being out of position.
Welbeck didn't really add many and Walcott was out for long periods.

Alexis, Giroud and then Santi (I believe) were our top 3 scorers.

We need a striker that'll bag us 20 league goals a season, or all the defensive strength in the world won't get us the title.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Aug 2015 16:42:48
The boys are pressing higher up the pitch, turning over their opponents, more than last season. They're creating more chances on the break, making them more of an attacking threat.

Mates on Sunday finally the new season kicks-off although I understand that many off you don't consider the community shield as more as a hyped up friendly.
Why is this? Why is a community shield lesser than a german supercup or the spanish one?

P.S.: I got this scenario in my head now for a while and am just interested if anyone knows what would happen if for a entire season every single game ends 0-0 (ridicoulos I know but I'm just curious)
