So that I am clear - Arsenal player dives for a penalty. Screams of cheat and rid the game of such players.

Alexandre Lacazette gets tripped in box, stays on his feet and not even a whisper of it in the media or on MOTD.

To make change - we have to talk about it.

Why aren't they asking why wasn't it given? Or saying nice job to Laca for staying on his feet.

Then on another channel I have to listen to some moron stating Torriera should have been booked rather than Troy when he was clearing the ball. absolute joke.

In reply to Sy. I am sure this was the same ref in a game at the Emirates where an attacking player was fouled by our keeper, he let play go on because another attacker was in position to score. He missed and the ref then proceded to go back and award the penalty. Aston Villa I think. So surely he could have seen he tried and failed to score because of the innitial foul. Double standards.

It wasn't given because it was antony taylor. He should have gone down as well, no point staying on your feet when you are tripped.

On a personal level I'd rather we be honest and miss out on a penalty than ourplayers throw themselves on the floor like they've turned into Neymar.
Var might not be perfect but it's a second chance and I can't see why we wouldn't want that second chance option.
Well done Lacasette in my opinion.

There is where we disagree gunner, going down after you have been tripped is not dishonest. If you have to try and stay on your feet and in the process don't get a penalty, which is what it was, then you are shooting yourself in the foot. If you are tripped don't try and stay up, it that simple. Other coaches will be telling their players that and i don't blame them. Diving is a completely different thing.

I'm old school Steve mate, stay on your feet for as long as possible and finish the move if humanly possible and let the ref do his job, if the ref isn't upto his job that's up to his bosses to sort out.
At the end of the day we are only responsible for the choices we make.

The idealist in me agrees with you 62 and that’s where we should get to.

Until we are prepared to applaud players like Laca and get tougher on others including our players while asking refs tough questions - how can we get there.

MOTD has a responsibility to get us there also

If he had gone down - would MOTD be saying he should have stayed on his feet. minimal contact. only way to cure it is to stay on your feed and weed out the poor refs.

Im trying to picture the great alex Ferguson now, in our dressing room after the game. What would he be saying to lacca. Well done laddy, keep on your feet, the refs will get it right one day, don't you be going down. Lol.

I agree SY mate it is an idealistic way of thinking but someone somewhere has to set a positive trend and wouldn't it be brilliant if it was Arsenal.
I would love to see us be premier league champions again and win the champions league for the first time too especially playing sexy football along the way, the only thing that could top that would be if we did it all while at the same time being the most admired team in the world not just because of our success or the football we played buy because of the honest way we achieved it.
Fantasy and idealism it most certainly is but surely it's also the pinnacle that every club on earth would love to reach.
Real are European champions but the final is remembered for that Ramos foul on Salah that changed the game from Liverpool being on top to Real going on to dominate, some call it a smart professional move by Ramos and I am sure there are managers fans and players out there who thought how brilliant Ramos was but for me the ideal is to not just be the best on paper but to achieve it with honesty and sportsmanship at every opportunity along the way.

As Cech is injured and could be out for some time, should we select Martinez to gain valuable first team match time as he is cover for Leno? Leno can then return for the Fulham match.

I think we will and should give Leno as many minutes as we can in his early days as first choice, gives him valuable getting to know his defence time plus a real chance to stake his claim as our permanent first choice keeper.
I see the reason for giving Martinez a game but in reality he's an emergency keeper who will for this season at least be a last resort apposed to an alternative.
You can't cover every possible scenario just in case it happens if Martinez should be needed at any point he will have to either sink or swim in the deep end.

Fair point G62. My thinking was that while Cech is out injured, Leno steps in as number one, playing league matches and Martinez takes over from Leno as the EL and Carabao Cup keeper. This gives Martinez valuable match time, so he gets up to first team pace, whilst it reduces the chance of Leno picking up an injury.

{Ed002's Note - Be like a Sunday school team then.}

Hi Ed002 - That's the way Wenger tended to do it, using Cech as his PL keeper and Ospina as his cup keeper. Emery seems to be doing the same with Cech as the PL keeper and Leno as his cup keeper. With Cech injured it seems sensible to do the same with Leno and Martinez. I believe other clubs utilise a similar policy.
I am confused as to the Sunday school team comment.

{Ed002's Note - I don't know of clubs that have any strange hierarchy like this - sure the reserve goalkeepers get a run out incup games, but the majority of clubs leave it to the manager to make decisions on a case-by-case basis.}

01 Oct 2018 15:10:38
Yes, the manager makes the decision on a match to match basis. However, I checked some of the top clubs and they rest the number one keeper for the Carabao cup this season. Of course once winning the cup becomes a possibility, some teams may play the strongest eleven.
In the CL, clubs tend to play their number one keeper, due to the importanof the competition. Teams have been known to change the team once they know they are out and have to complete the fixtures in the mini-league section.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I think that is what I said, but I am not aware of clubs that have a hierarchy moving down through to the third and fourth choice players.}

Niether Leno or Martinez have much Arsenal first team experience so I think it's important to get Leno up to speed as quickly as possible by giving him all the game time possible, it's true of course that he runs the risk of injury but every player runs that risk in every game it's just something you can't predict or control.
Arsene tried to protect the players from injury by not letting them tackle fully in training but being over protective backfired on him badly for years.
Sometimes you've just got to let the cards fall where they fall on things you can't control and just do what you think is right and makes most sense at the time.
