I have been going to see the Arsenal since 71, and I never remember all these blood silly terms being used for players positions, CDM, LWB, RWB, its bloody confusing when someone says Arsenal need a good CDM, now my turn WTF.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

22 Aug 2017 17:49:36
They're known as TLA's gunner and CTR and AJH started it over on the United page! 😂😂.

I bloody hate it, my son would be saying stuff and adding letters all the time, I just remember there where goal keepers, defenders, midfielders, attackers after that I'm lost Stoner.

It was goalies, full backs, centre halfs, midfielders, wingers and strikers then I remember anchormen and sweepers lol now there's all sorts of names for positions lol.

Left half, inside left inside right they were the days, fair shoulder varying the keeper into the net and pass backs galore and the 1 5 5 formation
Ah the beautiful game :-)

And good old fadhioned 442.
Now it's 352, 3241,4141, 4231,4231, 343, 32221 etc.

And let's no forget rush goalies and jumpers for goal posts! 😉.

Ha! I'm probably one of the oldest contributors to this site, the numbers 61 in my name are not only a wind up for raver, but are the year of my birth. However, despite being one of he oldest contributors, the letters used such as DM and CB make writing comments so much easier.

{Ed025's Note - it also saves cyber ink RG, so we are doing our bit for the planet mate..

23 Aug 2017 08:22:04
How about false number 9, or pivot. What the hell is a pivot? If you want a good laugh listen to an American stream of you nextt game, their commentary is excruciating.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Aug 2017 09:04:48
I never got my head round a false 9, is that not a center forward who should play elsewhere because he isn't very good in front of goal?

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Aug 2017 10:49:02
I've heard the phrase "that's some nice pinball defending" when the ball was being hoofed around, battering off of defenders on the edge of the box during an American game, AJH. The mls has some truly shocking commentary. Come on g62, you're not calling messi a bad finisher are you?!

ed002, tell me if i'm wrong but I believe arsenal will end up with Mahrez, is there still interest and a good chance we will move for him knowing that Lemar has dried up?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I cannot tell you if something you think is wrong. I cannot sensibly answer questions with "good chance" in them.}

22 Aug 2017 16:08:27
yeah i knew it was a weird question to ask u. In your opinion do you think arsenal will move for mahrez?

{Ed002's Note - Their interest right now is focussed elsewhere as I have said.}

Arsenal need to get back to playing the Arsenal way. This formation doesn't suit us with the players we have and is creating conflict between fans who think they know best. The reason we switched formations is because for years Arsenal have not had a decent CDM. So we had to switch to 3 at the back due to a weak midfield.

If Arsenal do get a quality CDM then they can get back to free flowing football knowing they have cover in midfield. Imagine Bellerin as RB with the Ox on the wing. This would finally stop fans moaning about whos the better RWB (there both average) Personally I would drop Ozil and play Ramsey behind the striker. He always gives 100% and can score goals. Then Sanchez and Kolisniac on the left. A quality CDM with Xhaka would work well.

Let's stop arguing over who plays where and instead pick a formation that suits the players we have. But a CDM is essential regardless of what formation we play.

I think most people would agree we either need a quality DM or cmf player to play alongside Le Coq as Caz did.
I also agree Ramsey or Ozil not both, Aaron is attacking minded regardless of Wether he can or can't defend, his mind is 100% on scoring goals either himself or helping others to do so.
Totally forget Ramsey Xhaka combination it just doesn't work and niether does Le Coq with either Ramsey or Xhaka.
A new cmf player is our most pressing requirement in almost everyone's view but there is only one view that matters and I'm not sure he feels the same way as 99% of fans or pundits on the subject.

22 Aug 2017 14:19:50
Mate, we don't pick the team, arsene does. You know he's stubborn so there's no point suggesting ideas.

Agree1 Disagree0

22 Aug 2017 15:04:59
I agree on all counts Ibraim, it does no good to say we need this that or the other because it's irrelevant if it's not what Arsene thinks.
The pundits ex Arsenal players and existing players can say and think what they like, Arsene will stick to what he thinks and the more people tell him the more resistant he seems to become.

The problem is that Wenger is clueless defensively. Against Stoke he played Bellerin a winger converted into a RWB that can't tackle at LWB. He played Ox an attacking player at RWB. He played two LB's at CB and no true DM player. We played too high a defensive line, there was no discipline. We lacked height at set pieces.
Against Liverpool we could bring back Debuchy at RB, play Kolasinac at LB and a back three of Mustafi, Mertesacker and Koscielny. In front of the back three play Coquelin and Xhaka.
I would try and sign N'zonzi and Van Dijk.
Then we may have some defensive stability.
The back line against Stoke and Leicester were a complete mess. Hence 4 goals conceded in two matches.

22 Aug 2017 17:12:23
Personally I'd try a Le Coq Ox partnership v Liverpool with 3 recognised CBs and Belerin right and kol left then Ramsay or mesut behind a 2 man strike force of Giroud or Danny and Lacasette.
Liverpools defence can be got at nearly as much as ours but they are simply much more effective going forward than us.

What's happening with krychowiak is he still available I remember he was a solid player at sevilla would be an upgrade in our midfield.

Talking of decent CDM players with a Seville connection why wasn't we interested in Geoffrey Kondogbia? I believe he has just gone on a season long long to Valencia with an option to buy (after he fell out with the manager at Inter Milan? ) so I am sure we could has tried for him if we wanted? Otherwise Seville sold him and Krychowiak and kept Stephen N'Zonzi, who was absolutely brilliant for them last season. Perhaps he could do a job for us if asked? However i suspect a CDM is not in Wengers plans.

Three players move away from the club, with only one sold, Toral to Hull. Of the other two Jenkinson is another failed attempt to sell a player and Bramall will get much needed game time. Wat worried me about Bramall is that his first touch is lacking and that is essential at a PL club.
The last 10 days of the window will see if we can successfully move on the players we wish to and hopefully sign a CB and a proper DM player we urgently require. We also need to sort out the contract rebels, we can't seriously let £130m ish disappear over the season. I have a feeling we might have a chance of keeping Ox by giving him the wages he wants. Considering invisible Walcott is already on such wages, I see little problem and Ozil will probably stay as I can't see anyone buying him! I can't envisage Sanchez staying nor will. We make the two signings mentioned above. We may bring in a replacement for Sanchez.

10 days? Loads of time for loads of activity to happen both ways yet.
I'd be very surprised if Sanchez plays for Arsenal again.
I know Arsene is talking about him playing at Liverpool Sunday but personally I think it's nothing but talk, time will tell and not long to wait now.

I am with you g62 i don't think Sanchez will be staying deadline day deal as i have already said. What we have seen so far will only further enhance Sanchez view that he needs to be at a club that will challenge for the 2 major honours that we do not get anyway near winning. The thing is we have 3 major problems
Firstly a manager who has signed 2 year contract extension and unless we are on the verge of relegation will the board act and the second problem is the pay structure that hamstrungs in moving average players on and thirdly is Arsene playing players out of position in a formation that should suit us.

Hi Gunner62, hopefully 10 days is sufficient time for us to sell the players we need to move on and acquire the players we need to bring in, although as I have said, other than a replacement for Sanchez, I can't see any other signings. I hope I am wrong. The injury to Sanchez is clearly a ploy to increase his sale price whilst seeing how we cope without him. I doubt he will play against Liverpool, although he may be on the bench. Wenger has already stated that we mustn't expect Sanchez to be at his best and his language in respect of selling him has subtly altered. I believe that we wil try again to sign Lemar as a replacement.
My guess would be that we sell Sanchez to City for between £50-70m and bring in Lemar somewhere in the same region.
This will leave us short defensively having sold Gabriel, but I believe Wenger intends using the 3 experienced CB's, Meretsacker, Koscielny and Mustafi as first choices, with Holding as back up. He will also use Monreal and Kolasinac as cover. I am not at all sure about Chambers as he wasnt considered against Stoke, we tried to sell him to Palace and if a decent offer comes in I believe we will sell him. This in effect means that for 5 defensive positions, 2 WB's and 3 CB's, we will have 9 players including Ox who may depart and isn't really suited to the WB role. I would rather see him play in an attacking role, if we are able to retain him. The other defensive option is Maitland-Niles, but I don't believe he is ready, nor Bielik who wasnt considered for the squad even when we down to the bare bones in respect of CB's against Leicester.

Hi lads predicting what Arsene will or won't do is about as simple as predicting the lottery numbers, its anyone's guess right now.
I wouldn't be surprised if he signed no one else or a couple of big names or another Perez Elney type player or two.
We all have our ideas of what he should do but in reality they count for absolutely nothing.
Heybridge mate when Arsene signed his new contract we all knew the odds on anything changing significantly over the 2 years were extremely long and those odds remain unchanged I think accepting things for what they are for the time being is the way forward and in a couple of years time it might be a different story, but until then bring on the Europa league as atleast that's something different for us to enjoy.
