Golden Generation :-)
They only ever got to a quater final which in my mind doesn't even equate to a bronze generation let alone golden.
A lot of good club players who lived off that at international level.
England's best player in 2002? Nicky Butt
England's best player in 2006? Owen Hargreaves
2010? the pilot who flew them back below the radar.
We should play the best of our truly Golden Generations of our under 20s and under 17s and be looking at 2024 euros and 2026 world cups rather simply go through the motions with what we know won't do anything at this world cup and won't be around in 2024 or 2026.

{Ed025's Note - im all for that G62..

The PL is amazing, but it's mainly due to the influx of foreign players, managers and coaches. If yu select the best team from the PL, how many players would be English and that's taking into account the fact that PL can only have 17 overage foreign players, forcing them to make up the rest of the 25 man squad with home grown players.
The current crop have a few quality players, but when the current international squad contains players such as Livermore and is managed by Southgate, it shows just how weak the selection of English talent is.
The golden generation were highly though of in England, but how many of them played overseas with the big guns of Europe?

Hi Ed025 mate good to hear from you.
Mate how many years have we wasted making the best of what we have at the time or to put it better making the best of a bad job.
Germany in 2006 even though hosts accepted the reality before the tournament started and despite having a very long history of success knew they needed to breathe build and then go forward again.
In 2010 they looked more to the future than the right now and in 2014 became the best of the best again.
When will we ever face reality and accept our true place in world football and set about really looking to change it.
If we look towards 2024 now we could be contenders if we wait till 2024 we will most likely be exactly where we are now or even further away still.

{Ed025's Note - its certainly stagnated G62, i think a lot have given up on the england side to be honest and who can blame them, its been a succession of failure and i would go with your idea mate...rip it up and start again..

England have been pretending to be one of the big boys for years without ever coming up with the goods to prove it and now their credibility has gone and with it most people's interest in them.
The only way is to rip it up and start again as the French Germans and Spanish did, Italy and Holland have both been huge international teams but have hit a low currently but by 2022 or 2024 both will be back right in the last 4 mix or even better.
We need to stop pretending accept our true position and standing within the game and simply change our ways so the future stands a chance of being different from the past.

It would be criminal if wenger let's wilshere go and keep the likes of iwobi at the club. Is it just the fans that realise jack is putting in performances every week. If ozil can get 350k a week what difference does it make to give jack an extra 20 30k. We have the money!
Jack is arsenal through and through. Yes he has had injuries throughout his career but lesser talents at the club have and have been rewarded with contracts. The new look wilshere this season has been one of the shining lights in this dismal season.

Italia 90! What a brilliant world cup that was for England fans.
Ok I know we didn't win it but it was edge of the seat stuff with England holding thier own against both Germany and Holland who were super powers at the time.
Since then the excitement has been getting flatter and flatter with every tournament that passes.

The tough stance towards Jack Wilshere is intriguing, With only a matter of about 7 weeks until the end of the season, I am sure the board have put into motion plans to replace Wenger, as only a EL win could possibly save him, as 2 years without CL football and looking less likely to achieve it under Wenger is unacceptable to the board and the fans.
Perhaps the board are finally initiating decsions and may have the ear of a manager that they have lined up. There is a lot of 'noise' about the German Low, not my choice as the difference between national management and club management is clear.
Players may already be lined up to come to the club and hence retaining Wilshere may not be a priority. With any new manager will see the need for a keeper, a CB or two, a DM or two and a wide player or two. Interesting times at the club and for all the good Wenger has done for the club a change is needed. Unless of course he wins the EL!

Whilst I agree about Low, I hope the next manager is taken on to focus on coaching, as opposed to total control like Wenger. I think the signings of Sanllehy and Mislintat etc suggest this. Therefore, Low may not find it as hard to adjust to club management if his main priority is setting out the team each game and managing in-game tactics, motivating players etc. Other options may be more preferable, but i'd be happy to see what Low could do.

Will winning the Europa really make everything that has happened this and in recent seasons ok?
Does being way behind the top 5 suddenly become unimportant?
Does our unarguably decline suddenly that everyone in football is talking about suddenly become a myth?
I don't see how a cup win or not would change anything one way or the other.
Because of what Sanogo was saying the other day about the next man being a coach rather than a manager with the club having the majority of decisions on transfers I think it will be Lowe that comes in.
He's used to not having a transfer market and much chioce who to pick from where as other managers might not be happy with that arrangement.

Gunner, its called papering over the cracks. And its pretty stretchy wall paper.

I think it's just called a tent made of paper now Steve, there is no bricks and mortar left to paper over.

Prehaps that's what Arsene is talking about when he says the teams moral is low, they've all become far too tents:-)
