I really do hate the arrogance that Wenger has a lot of the time. He said it himself after the Wigan game: "When it doesn't go your way in a game you need to search for that bit more" - hang on mate, if the players are giving 100%, then there shouldn't be "that bit more".

Fact is Wenger sends his team out to keep possession and keep the game slow, hoping for a 2-0 win (one goal after 30 mins, the second after 60mins), and coast the majority of the game "in third gear".

I want to see the team playing in top gear for 90mins, when in possession, and when defending. This is what well coached players need to get used to as a minimum.

Wenger is the club's biggest earner, he's obviously highly motivated by money. I'd like to try giving Wenger a nice bonus if:
1) Arsenal score in the first 15mins of a game
2) Arsenal score more than 3 goals in a game
3) Arsenal substitute scores a goal / assist

Anyone else watching that talk of the Terrace on ESPN? I must admit I don't normally watch it but some interesting points made about arsenal's financial situation. One of the journalists on the show said he has had to do extensive analysis of arsenal's financial situation and we are £200 million to the good, he said that Wenger needing to make £15 million a year in the transfer window was rubbish something he wants to do not something he needs to. The club jokingly said what would you do if we gave you 100 million he said give it back, which in the future almost turned out to be true. And he also said that Wenger hates confrontation that's why he has the same back room staff year after year and promotes from within. Also why we have strong starting 11 but no real strength in depth as he wants to work with a core of players and everyone know where they will play and be happy and then have others on big wages for what they do who are happy to sit on the bench and wait for injuries or substitute appearances. Said the difference between us and other big clubs was the fact that we sell our top players like Nasri, Fabregas and RVP where as United, Madrid Barcelona don't sell their. He said he needs to realise that he cannot replace players of their quality year after year. He also highlighted the wages we offer to squad players but not competitive top end wages. It was pretty damning stuff but interesting could explain why we have no real strength in depth. I must admit I'm not sure if I believe it all but thought I would share it with you all...Don't shoot the messenger!!

Ed do you know what the clubs debt is around now.
i see all these big names mentioned ,but don't remember Arsene buying any big name.
I love the club so in not going to slag them off.i think Arsene is a top manager,we have been lucky to have him and if he left i think 18 clubs in the premiership would all want him.
i think we have a chance in the champions league even tho the bookies don't.lets not boo our players ,it don't help,
All you gooners have a merry xmas,
Welsh gooner {Ed027's Note - according to various sites its 90m, but i think this is fixed or something, we cant't pay it all off at once, if we could, we certainly would

Believable0 Unbelievable1

I think its probably got something to do with early cancellation fees as well. Like with a lot of mortgages if you want to pay off early you have an early settlement fee (crazy I know) and on 90m I'd guess the sum could buy us a decent mid-table player.

Greetings and salutations my fellow Gooners,

A tough etched out victory yesterday I believe is a signal of good things to come. I prefer and will always look at the glass as being half full. Yesterdays result indicated growth I believe within the club. Its more important to win ugly than to draw/loose beautifully when required.

Now on to Theo. I think the conundrum for the club is simple. Theo does create opportunity but lacks the skill set to be considered a potential elite striker. However, the player (and good for him for having self belief) is determined to find a way to play in his preferred role. As such here we are, a crossroad. My belief is simple, it is and should always be the managers call regarding deployment of personnel. I honestly believe that Arsene realises that Theo adds tremondous value when he is on his game from the wing and I also believe he does see that he may grow one day into a potential good striker.

I believe the club has been very fair with Theo. If his resolve is to play solely as a striker then I believe he will seek an opportunity elsewhere (I personally believe this will be his downfall as it was with Flamini, Hleb). However if he understands that he needs to grow and be patient in his development then I believe he will resign. My hope is that he re-signs. I take strong opinion when Lionel Messi considers him to be a dangerous talent.

Finally I would like to add that I believe this site enables us all to add our "two pence" regarding the club we love, as such I believe it is important even in times of disagreement to respect the opinions of all.

With that I look forward to the continued banter about the club we all love with all of you!

Season greetings,

So what do you guys make of the Ashley Williams-Van Persie moment in the game earlier today?

It's a serious question by the way, I'm not asking it to get stupid responses about deliberately wanting to see him hurt, I looked at it a few times earlier, and I wanted to say he wasn't aiming for his head, but, it's hard to defend it.

I do think Ferguson overreacted as per usual, with "it's the most dangerous thing I've seen on a football pitch" and " it could of killed him".

There was definetley capacity to hurt him.
But does whiskey nose forget Cantona's Karate kick?
Rooneys attempted leg break?

As for possibly killing him, I want to say there's no chance, but I suppose being hit that hard in the head by anything is dangerous.

That said, Kieran Gibbs took a cannon to the ribs yesterday against Wigan, could easily of broke a few ribs or hurt an organ, so there's always capacity for serious injury in the game
What worries me is that ferguson will get Williams an insane punishment, not because of what he did, but because of what Ferguson said about what he did.

Could have killed it....

I mean I know RVP is made of glass, but come on... ball hit him in the back of the head. As much damage as a free kick could have done...

Agree6 Disagree2

When i was playing football my mate got once a ball to the back of his head in training. we were having a break so he wasn't expecting it at all. it was also a cross so not very heavy shot. the result, he got a massive headache, had to stop training and went to hospital. in the end it wasn't anything serious but he told me later his neck was pretty bad for a while afterwards.

i have got an elbow to my head and had a concussion as a result. it was really nasty. my forehead was in fire and teeth and tongue were hurting for days.

i've taken many hits to my legs, stomach etc and that head injury is the worst by miles. all i'm saying head injuries are a serious thing and sometimes the worst injuries look like the least harmless. so i understand why ferguson is making this so big deal. however i'm not sure if it's intentional from williams. a player has to be really crazy to do something like that on purpose.

I would say thats a decent plan B for when we are getting liuttle space. This will make us much more compact in the centre to allow for a more fluent quick passing game. WBs allowing for passes out to the wings if needed. Kos would be allowed to push up and be the beast DM we have been waiting for!

Great to see Arsenal back where they belong above Tottenham.

Glad to see we are climbing back up the table and while they may not be vintage performances we are getting the three points which is the main thing. I hope that the points I make don't seem too negative as they aren't meant that way and aren't just in response to last few games but what I've seen up to Christmas.

The first thing is that we've played a few games where we just don't look like scoring and have lacked that player we can rely on to just put the ball in the net. If you look out our current options; I admit I may have been a bit hard on Giroud early in the season I expected him to replace RVP which was unfair, but he is hard working and does look a threat, I hope in the second half of the season though he will score more goals. Then there is Walcott through the middle, I've heard contrasting views of Walcott as our striker some saying his pace causes problems and as long as the ball is right defenders won't catch him and as our top goal scorer he should be given the chance, but others are saying he hasn't got a footballing brain, he doesn't take his chances and hasn't got the skill to beat defenders or hold up the ball. I personally haven't made my mind up yet as I think it is too early and he needs to play more games and get a game against a big team to see what he will be like. I would be disappointing though if he left for free after we signed him at 16 and suffered through many off his inconsistent performances. I won't even bother taking about Gervinho, but I would like to see Podolski given the chance to play through the centre either alone or maybe behind Giroud with Cazorla on the left wing as he is can be clinical in front of goal. I do think we are lacking a bit there though and need to add a clinical finisher to our strike force though but someone like RVP last year or Henry before that who can also make things happen upfront has that bit of magic in his locker and can be relied upon to score.

I also noticed that quite a few users and Eds have pointed out that this squad has a lot of wingers who can either play both upfront or on the wing or want to play upfront rather than on the wing, rather than real wingers, I hadn't considered this too much myself but I have to say when looking at the squad I agree. If you look we at what we have we have Giroud as our only out and out striker then Podolski and Walcott who both want to play through the middle but can play wide, Chamberlain who I think is great on the wing but in the long term Wenger see's in the centre of the park, Gervinho who often plays upfront but is useless in both positions. Then we also play Ramsey there from time to time and have Wellington Silva and Miyiachi out on loan. I personally think that this something we should address because in my opinion it means we will suffer in both areas because we have neither out and out wingers or strikers, there is a lot of realistic talent that could be acquired Ben Arfa just as an example.

I have also seen on more than one occasion either by football websites or newspapers comparisons between the top clubs second squads and what strength in depth they have and I again think this something we need to address. If you look at the squad for yourself and compare too many other top teams both in prem and Europe we need more players in certain areas. We also have a huge number of players that just earn a wage and do little else or players on loan that we probably won't see play for us again, like Djourou, Squillaci, Fabianski and Chamakh. But we also have players like Diaby who never play due to injury (I think the club should ask him to retire from international games seems harsh I know but we pay his wages and he can barely cope with league schedule and he got injured playing with France) or just rubbish like Gervinho and Santos. For me this needs to be addressed the squad needs a good purge and the deadwood cut out.The fact we still don't have a defensive midfielder is criminal this is a must for me so when we play teams like United or Bayern we have a line of defence between the midfield and the defenders, Arteta has played well there but it isn't his natural position and against some teams we could play or usual midfield trio but I feel we need a defensive option for the big games or physical teams.

I don't expect all of this to happen and even if it did to happen in January but I feel some of this needs to be addressed now and some in the summer.

I have to admit I'm really pleased that we have started putting more crosses into the box, with the return of Wilshere and the development of Gibbs and Jenkinson.

I'm also really pleased with that we have tied down five exciting young players and will have a British core to the squad and I know Ramsey hasn't been good this season but at least we won't lose him on a free! Personally I think in the UK we often overrate British talent, for me Young and Cleverly are and example of two players that are grossly overrated because they are English but in Wilshere particularly we have the real deal. But again I saw questions in the press with these deals whether it is again potential rather than what is done on the pitch that is being rewarded. I think it also note worthy that we don't have a player on over 100k a week, not saying that is a good or bad thing but impressive none the less. But I would like to see this whole giving players big wages when they have done little addressed e.g. Djourou because it isn't cost effective and gives us a big wage bill, I would also like to see should the right player be available top wages being offered but not to just anybody, and addressing the previous issue could help with making this more possible.

And finally the sale of our top talent has got to stop especially this leaving contracts till the last year it is not how to move a club forward and build a better squad.

I know this post is long and I may have not addressed everything but I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on the team. Hoping for a good run in the league now and some top quality signings in jan. I know they aren't realistic but how amazing are Goetze, hat trick in the week and Isco.

I don't know if you heard as well but apparently the team went out for food after the game yesterday was a buffet, £6 a head except Gervinho who had to pay £27 and he was the only one who couldn't finish his dinner.

Hope everyone Eds included, not sure what this issue between Eds and some on here is as I haven't been on the site a lot recently but I appreciate their work, Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays :)

Rvp gets another assist for United's first goal v Swansea. United would be no where near the points their own if it wasnt for Wenger/board selling him there.

That decision will have to go down as one of the worst, most stupid moves in club history....or even all sporting history.

If the club knew we had all this sponsor money about to kick in, why on earth did they sell him to United. Should of let him run down his contract like they ''might" do with Theo.

Geez it will b embarrassing at season's end when another one of our top players is holding the PL trophy, but its even worse then Nasri situation, as City still would of won it without Na$ri, United may not have won this year without rvp.

Believable11 Unbelievable7

One day you may realise it was his choice and it WAS also about the money £200k+ per week for a 29 year old who WILL get another serious injury.

To the first comment...it shouldnt be his choice as he was still under contract. He cant tell the club where he wants to go..he had a year left.

Agree1 Disagree1

First goal? It was their only goal 1-1 it finished.

Everyone knows that if rvp is fit he will score and make plenty of goals, it is whether he can stay fit or not that is probably why we sold him. 24m is a lot of money to gamble with, it is paying off at the moment but there is still a long way to go, and from what i've seen he is their best player.

337

Agree2 Disagree0

While waiting for the injury, he has scored 12 PL goals....

Agree2 Disagree0

It's really not as clean cut as you are making it, nameless.

I am not saying I agree with it but I can see what happened, firstly we got a lot of money for a player who could have left on a free within 12 months, he refused to sign a vastly improved contract.

Also you are talking about a 3 or 4 year contract at 200k+ per week, that is a huge risk for a player who was injured for almost 7 seasons out of 8.

You are right, at the moment it looks like a good deal for utd, but we will see.

Huntelaar not comming, as he just signed a new deal with Schalke 04.
Llorente will not come either, as he will wait out for a high-wage paying club in the summer.
David Villa.....I dont know, but guess he will have to drop a lot in wages if he is to join Arsenal.
Isco will not come to Arsenal....come on guys, lets be realistic. Isco is rated as the biggest talent in Europe.....will he join us? Guess not.
Goetze will also not join us.....

I believe Wenger will buy in January, but we are not in position to get the biggest names.

Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, now he is a player I think we should consider.
Demba Ba, his escape-clause could tempt Wenger to buy....wages and agents could be a problem.

Also, I did not like Sagna´s body-language against Wigan.......he looked cranky. Maybe on his way out?

I really hope we get rid of some highly paid deadwood in January.

Merry Christmas

Norwegian Gunner

Believable8 Unbelievable0

Yeah sagna was his own reliable self. didn't let anything dangerous to our penalty box and made the width in attack when needed. but his body language wasn't so good, think we need to sell him.

Agree1 Disagree5

Osvaldo, would possibly cost a little too much for Wenger.....17.5 mill euro when he went to Roma in 2011. But, if you want a top quality striker, then you have to pay top money.

Lewandowski would possibly be in the same area money-wise, and he is also a top striker.

A striker not much mentioned, but who nets a lot is, Stefan Kießling of Bayer Leverkusen. 12 goals in 17 matches so far this season. Thats not bad at all. At 28 years, he still got a lot to give.

Agree6 Disagree1

I didnt say I wanted to sell Sagna. He is one of the best right backs there is, but he argued with both Cazorla, Theo, and the Ox at several occations.....maybe it was nothing, and I hope it doesnt have anything to do with him wanting away. Barcelona have also come out and said that there is no way they will sell David Villa in January......thats setteled then.

I accept the fact that we still need some players in some positions. but we need 2 fight our own demons 1st. how can wenger sub his best player just 2 put in ramsey. we are losing points due 2 tactical deficiency.

wenger should try his best to do without ramsey and gervinho for now. let's keep the winning team. walcott has to do better when he is backing the post. he must be able to at least hold on to play while support arrives. but I honestly feel he would function better in a 4-4-2 formation, partnering giroud.

We need to spend 30-50 million on one player.. Gotze, Cavani, Falcao someone that is an established WORLD CLASS player and try to get Isco from Malaga, he is young and is quality. These things can happen, we just need Wenger to make the call. Usmanov is there to help! Haha. Thoughts anyone?

Spot on, we need a few big names in the team.

Unbelievable !

Just because a player is 30 -50 mil they are not guaranteed to be a hit in the EPL. Veron, Shevchenko, etc..... Were all complete flops, Torres was great at Liverpool but a waste of 50mil at Chelsea, Carroll 35mil great at Newcastle, need I go on.........

Agree2 Disagree1

It is a gamble that needs to be done. No more of this 3-5 players worth a total 50 million.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not saying we go and spend 30-50 million on one player that had ONE good season (Carroll). Make sure the scouting has been done properly and that the player has already been an established WORLD PLAYER for a few years. I also wouldn't put Carroll in the category of world class players.

But a falcao or a cavani have done it every season carroll had half a decent season and was a massive gamble which didnt pay off and torres was out of form when he joined chelski. falcao has done it for three seasons and so has cavani

Huntelaar renewed contract with Schalke till 2015.. So it looks like he is out of the picture for sure. Time for Walcott to do the same!

As usual, we are being linked with all these players, but to be honest most of the names being touted wouldn't improve the squad imo.

David Villa for example, absolute quality in his day! with his recent injuries and moving to a faster paced, more physical league, sorry but dont think he would do that well imo

Yann M'villa, named in the worst eleven in Ligue 1, would he adapt to the EPL, would the bright lights of London cause more mischief than good for him

Adrian Lopez, Poor scoring record in La Liga, again, would he hit the ground running, i think not...

For the new signings to come in, the scouts, AW, etc need to be pretty certain the new players can come in and make an impact straight away, the settling in period isnt going to help us massively in the second half of the season.

SO, for the money available, id rather us go for the likes of Fellaini, Baines, Shaw, Mignolet, Benteke. Yes they will cost more than buying from Europe, BUT they already have EPL experience and would settle in almost immediately so as to not take the momentum off the run we are starting on!!

Arsene, please get some quality players in Jan. Don't use this run as an excuse not to buy. We all saw problems yesterday. It was pure luck that we got off with a win.

Why is everyone asking for us to sign M'vila? He is in the worst XI of the season so far? Massive disappointment.

He is no netter than a la coq.

Why all the people who think they are experts at fotbal. Wenger is paid 130,000 how can you enforce that you know more and he should be fired?

In Wenger we trust man.

Haters gonna hate man
