What is wengers problem with Joel Campbell?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

25 Aug 2016 10:41:58
I didn't take it as a negative SLB.
He kept him here the past few seasons when he had offers and is in his plans.

I think he's good enough to play but will be behind Theo and ox and maybe iwobi, so better all round if he gets regular time elsewhere and that'll give gnabry a look in too. Makes good sense.

What that implies to me though is AW needs him for now - so either he's planning to sell one of the above, or move Theo or Alexis up top.

As interest in Arsenal transfer activity or inactivity to be more accurate dwindles to an all time low the BBC make an audacious bid to win over all dissolutioned gooners.

You are right there raver. While we are on the baking theme, how do you think the crumble will fare this year, running their little backsides off in the champs league and then playing at the weekend, running them little socks of again.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Aug 2016 21:40:47
Well it can't be any worse than running around on a Thursday night and then playing on the weekend, every top European club wants to be worried this year as the golden boot boy Harry Kane is coming for them.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Aug 2016 21:52:18
Harry didn't look to European savy this summer Raver mate, he's an excellent premier league striker but international and CL level against the best sides? Let's wait and see.

In an era where top CB's are in short supply, would Johhny Evans be such a bad signing? Is Mustafi at around £40m, any better? Evans had PL experience, he is 6'2", a good height fir a CB. The sole nagging doubt I have is his injury history, which doesn't bode well.

Realistically, we have Koscileny as the sole top CB. Mertesacker is in the last season of his deal and out for the remainder of 2016. Gabriel has been really disappointing, as he looked to have all the attributes necessary to succeed. Holding looks to be an excellent signing. Clearly he needs to mature and gain the necessary experience. Chambers has been poor and I don't have a feeling he will make it at Arsenal. So, if we sign Evans, we will have him, Koscielny, Holding and Gabriel. Not a bad quartet.

To be fair no matter what Arsenal have needed but Arsene has failed to address over the past 7 or 8 years I've heard the same thing, " these players are in short supply'
Top keeper DM striker CB I've heard the same excuse for every weaknesse we've had that Arsene failed to address over the past 7 or 8 years, while plenty of other clubs have filled those positions without any fuss.

Jonny evans is bang average and that's not good enough.

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Aug 2016 20:59:56
Johnny Evans is awful, there's a reason he's not still at Man Utd.

Just seen Dragovic has joined Leverkusen for 18m Euros, hopefully that means Leverkusen will let Jedvaj or Tah move to us. Wishful thinking I know.

Agree0 Disagree2

24 Aug 2016 21:10:42
If anyone on here had suggested Johnny Evans in May everyone would have laughed at them, now people are trying to talk him up as a decent option.

24 Aug 2016 21:23:56
Gunner that is right and its called desperation. Too many bang average jonny kickaballs being mentioned.

24 Aug 2016 21:58:15
Steve can you imagine if spuds had signed Evans at the start of the window, this page would have been full of people laughing at Tottenham, now because Arsene might be interested he's suddenly improved dramatically and become a good cb.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Aug 2016 22:02:12
I'd rather let holding get some game time in and gain experience. He may well excel and become a great player with the experience.

24 Aug 2016 22:44:17
Gav while I don't disagree, the situation is rediculous and we shouldn't expect too much too soon from holding.

Hmmm interesting reports coming from France that the board blocked a move for griezmann. Now not saying it's true. But if there's any truth to this then to me this highlights a problem many people seem to be blind to. Changing manager may not sort our problems.

That being said I doubt that's true.

Believable0 Unbelievable5

Where'd you see this mate?
I'm not disagreeing, genuinely asking, I had a quick Google and couldn't see anything (though I am an idiot at times, so that means little! )

The reason I ask, is because I'm really interested in this sort of thing.
We all get on Arsene's back, but more often than not, our board escape with a bit of a tounge lashing and a couple of boo's.

There are different stories this window already, you've read these about the board blocking a move for Griezmann and there was one earlier on saying the board actually finalised Xhaka because Arsene was penny pinching.

This is one of the things that interest me the most about Arsene eventually leaving, the aftermath.

I expect a lot to come out from the club, coaches and back room staff telling their stories, how Wenger is X and Kroneke is Y.

I even expect it from Wenger and the board.
I wouldn't be surprised to see 'I did what I could with the limited funds made avaliable to me' followed up with the new Arsenal manager getting a £200m wad to spend as a 'we're happy to spend, it's all Arsene! '

I'm not sure we'll ever REALLY know who's to blame for our ineptitude when it comes to transfers, but I expect to see a few fall outs and upsets in the future.

I have an app on my phone called 90mins if that's ok to be posted. They put articles and stories on there from various news sources. They say this one was from get French football news. Said Arsene had been trying since the euros.

There so many scenarios it's hard knowing what's true. To me the whole board down to Arsene needs a good kick up the ass.

Hmm Sanchez and Eur30M for Morata and Rodriguez. Is that tempting? If he does want to leave, I'd go for it!

Believable2 Unbelievable4

24 Aug 2016 14:21:49
James Rodriguez is pony.

Agree3 Disagree1

24 Aug 2016 14:47:32
Sanchez is one player you don't sell.

Agree1 Disagree1

24 Aug 2016 15:08:37
I wouldn't particularly want James.
Good player, started life very well at Real, but injuries limited him and then Zidane took over and doesn't really like his style, doesn't work hard enough apparently (which I'm not sure would suit the prem) .

I'd love Morata, bags of potential, has the attributes to succeed in the prem and is a big game player.

Wouldn't like to see Sanchez leave for either player really, but there have been whispers he's a little discouraged at the club and if he was to want out, I'd rather we capitalised on it instead of letting him go on a free next season if he won't sign a new deal.

All in all, I'm not even sure I believe Madrid want Sanchez though!
Bale, Ronaldo, Vasquez all competing for places on the wing, plus Asensio looks to be staying there now and he can play wide, as can Isco.

I can't imagine much to it, but what do I know?!

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Aug 2016 17:13:08
Definitely agree Steve, it's as simple as that. Although I've already given up on us being an ambitious club. Selling Sanchez would be a bad message to us fans but not one that I'm not already half expecting.

I could get used to this moaning malarkey :P.

24 Aug 2016 17:43:31
I think varane and morata for Sanchez would be a better deal maybe chuck in sanogo to sweeten the deal.

Agree1 Disagree5

24 Aug 2016 09:01:37
For the last few weeks now it's been all about signing a defender and getting back up into the squad.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Wenger went out with a bang and took a page out of Real Madrid's book - if you score 3, we'll score 4.We have a good spread of defensively minded players to anchor the midfield and offer an extra layer of protection to the defence so why not go all out attack and just try to out score every opponent?

I'd much rather see us over spend on a striker than a defender. For what it's worth I also think Holding will prove to be a quality purchase, if he's good enough he's old enough and cost doesn't really factor in that.

Believable4 Unbelievable6

24 Aug 2016 14:23:41
Good plan, but we don't have the striker (s) to outgun many teams.

Do you think Wenger is waiting until the last minute and hoping Valencia will buckle and they would rather take 30 million than keep a player that wants away?

He isn't worth 50 million (or 30 in my opinion, but as everyone keeps saying prices are inflated for EPL clubs, but they cannot moan too much as the money coming in is also vastly inflated. Seems Arsenal, Wenger et al want to have their cake and eat it.
Same could apply to other players.
Wenger is scouting the shelves for yellow labelled players!

Believable1 Unbelievable3

24 Aug 2016 13:48:15
I would rather we spent the money on a player with premiership experience rather than keep funding foreign clubs for players that may or may not be any good in the EPL, and especially if we have to splash out 40mil or more for the privilege. That being said I would rather we signed my gran than Johhny Evans, and hey, i would even subsidise the transfer by supplying the shovel needed to dig her up.

Manolis from Roma? Might be a decent shout - linked with him a few seasons back. Roma are out of champs league so possible temptation there?

Believable1 Unbelievable4

24 Aug 2016 08:34:31
But if Roma are out of the CL then so is he if he played for them in their defeat isn't he?

24 Aug 2016 09:05:38
I think, G62 (don't quote me on this mate! ) that if your club is knocked out in qualifiers, you can play for another team in the main competition.

I could be wrong, but that's what I'm thinking.

To be honest, I'd love Manolas at Arsenal, even if he were cup tied!
Roma are probably the only team I really follow as much as Arsenal (it's a family thing) even though I don't really 'support' them per say.

We should of bought Kostas when he left Olympiakos for like £12m but we were stingy and Roma reaped the rewards, he's a quick, strong aggressive defender, there's a bit of Koscielny about him I'd say.

Agree3 Disagree4

24 Aug 2016 09:20:36
Don't tend to follow Italian football massively so guessing you rate him D. He seemed to have a bit about him a few years back and I'm sure he hasn't lost it. Still got a good few years in him so would probably be a good acquisition and would imagine the weekly wage wouldn't be too much.

On a side note, why Arsenal haven't increased Kos' money is beyond me - the guy got us out of so many holes in the last couple of seasons. I know he's classed as 'old' but JT for Chelsea is still going strong! He must be 87 odd now?

Agree2 Disagree1

24 Aug 2016 11:58:19
I do personally yeah Joker!

He's had a decent two seasons at Roma, doesn't score many (like 2 in the league I think) but he's solid at the back, makes few mistakes, I think he gave away a couple pen's last season but one was very, very contentious (I forget against whom! ) he's vocal at the back and isn't afraid to shout at his own players, he even had an arguement with Miralem Pjanic in a game last season, because Pjanic miscontrolled a pass!
Apparently they were still arguing about it after the match.
He's only 25, a Greek international, champions league experience, a leader and no nonsense, I'd love him at Arsenal.

He had a good season for Roma last season, he's the man who leads the defence for the team, played most of his season alongside Antonio Rudiger or Leandro Castan who's now at Torino on loan, Digne went to Barcelona instead of making his loan at Roma permanent and Maicon moved away, so the Roma backline is pretty much new look apart from Manolas and Rudiger.
They have signed 3 Cb's this season, admittedly all 3 of which are on loan, but they now have 5senior players who play CB ( Manolas, Ruidger, Fazio, Juan Jesus and Vermaelen) Italian teams often have a really big squad, they're allowed more subs on the bench in domestic games than we are, 12 to our 7 but can still only call 3.

So, if they were to lose Kostas, which I'm sure they won't be open to, but a price was agreed, unlike many teams, Roma wouldn't need to scramble a replacement as desperately.

De Rossi can also play as a centre half and has done on occasion.
If anything, Roma's stocked up across their back line, so I personally think (just wanna point out I have NO evidence to back this up, I'm just applying my twisted logic) they'd be more open to selling a defender at this stage in the window, than say Valencia would, that said, I doubt they'd entertain anything less than £30m for Manolas, but in the current market, I'd argue he's probably worth that.

There you go Steve, I'm refreshed, revamped and the war and peace chapters are back!

Washo mentioned that he had a theory that Arsenal are trying to save enough money that when a new manager comes in there will be a healthy budget put by for him to spend. I'd like to think that were true.
But! Would we really need that amount of money in the Championship? .
Wenger even mentioned! Up front there is always Akpom and that what ever he is supposed to be Sanogo as back up.
How embarrassing? . It makes me cringe.

Believable0 Unbelievable8

24 Aug 2016 19:18:01
Absolute nonsense. The funds are in the bank, as Wenger dictates the transfer spend at the club. In the past the financing of the new stadium put the club under immense financial strain and Wenger had to make shrewd low cost signings and try to bring young players through. We simply didn't have the funds to compete for the top players.

Since our finances have improved we have been able to keep players by paying higher wages, don't forget we had to sell the likes of Van Persie and Nasri. We have also been able to pay large transfer fees for Ozil, Sanchez and Xhaka. If there is a problem then it is Wenger's reluctance to go the extra mile and spend sufficiently to bring in the 2 or 3 additional players we require. Don't forget unlike virtually every other manager, Wenger has been a long term manager and has been able to make longer term plans.

In recent seasons we have won the FA Cup twice and our league position has improved, we were 2nd last season, not 4th! I must admit that at times I get frustrated like most Arsenal fans, but assuming he brings in at least one player, we have a strong squad capable of a top four finish in a tougher PL. Holding looked much better alongside Koscielny and we have Gabriel back in a few weeks, I believe we will sign a CB before the window shuts. Up front Giroud is back, we have Akpom, who needs to be given a chance to play, we have Walcott and Sanchez who can fill in until December when we have the excellent Welback back. I can't see us signing a quality striker before the window shuts, as there simply aren't any available at a realistic price.
