So Per is now ruled out for 5 months with a knee injury.

Regardless of people's opinions of him, he brings incredible experience and we'll miss that on the pitch.

We also now only have 2 fit first team centre halves, unless Holding is going to be rushed into the first team (which, in fairness is the most likely)

So then, will we see the CB signing people want or are we going to go into the season short?

Regardless, all the best to Per, for a speedy recovery.

That leaves Gabs and Chambers then, still I'm sure one of the 11 midfielders can slot in

Santi is good in the air.

Well wengers done it again! Everyone knows we need a striker and central defender, but being tight trying to save a couple more penny's and maybe signing players in the last week. He has left us short again! Will probably just panic buy and end up with some unheard of 30 year old donkey.

Arsene needs to put his Arsenal v Liverpool 2nd game of last season video on to remind him of what a very average Liverpool team did to the Chambers and Gabriel partnership, we will have a new CB within 15 minutes viewing :-)

Pity there isn't someone we wanted to be perennially injured. WE could just give him the captaincy.

26 Jul 2016 09:30:56
wengers done it again? i can not believe he drop kicked Met to intentionally injure him.

we have Kos, Mert, Gab, Chambers, Holding, Moneral, Debuchy who can play centre and he has said he wanted another 2 players ( i know ed said this is unlikely )

He may already be lining up someone for all we know, how this injury is his fault is beyond me.

26 Jul 2016 09:28:11
I've already said in another post, he isn't even close to being good enough for a starter, he's too slow in thought and pace.

Santi, Sanchez, Walcott, Ox, Chambers, Wilshire, Ozil, Le Coq, Ramsey and Elneny can all appear in a midfield 5 in some shape so why do we spend 30 mill on another midfielder.

Can someone enlighten me I'm still baffled by it, that money could have gone a long way to get a CF.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

25 Jul 2016 20:59:35
Pretty simple really, Wenger regularly reads your posts and as you've slated all but maybe 3 of them and insinuated Elneny wasn't even a signing I guess he felt the need to strengthen our midfield area.

Hope that clears that up for you. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

BG, not sure Chambers should be in that list. Also, who are you referring to as all listed play very different positions. If it's Granit? I can understand the Q but I still felt we needed to add steel to CM as did most readers on the site. If Marhez then I don't disagree as a CD and CF is more important as we must address the spine of the team. If we add him plus CD and CF -> happy Gooner. I don't want to add him and sacrifice a CF.

25 Jul 2016 21:37:18
Red pathetic asual from yourself, Ramsey is quality, as is Ozil as is Sanchez, Le Coq has done a good job, Elneny was too late IMO oh look there is 5 I've not slated.

Ox, I've never slated merely slated he's good as an impact player.

Walcott far too inconsistent for 120k a week

Wishire too injury prone

Chambers all I've said should be loaned out, for the money we paid for him it's false economy sitting on the bench week after week

You didn't really answer a very genuine question but that's you I guess :) x.

SY

I'm merely saying the likes of chambers has been used in a midfield role before . Le Coq and Eneny have done well.

As you read my post my point was we have enough in midfield but are miles short on the goal scoring front and defensively, the 30 mill could have gone to another department

Couldn't it?

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed041's Note - I think it's a valid point mate, you are more than stocked in midfield. Strikers and CB'S wouldn't go a miss.

25 Jul 2016 21:53:57
Every body knows regardless the two main areas first needed recruits were striker and center back first. And bloody good ones too. I was just as baffled, it was an area he could have bought for the future or took a punt, not striker or cb. But wenger knows best as always.

25 Jul 2016 22:47:38
BG, I don't disagree with you but I am glad we added to the midfield spine. I don't want it to be at the expense of CF and CD though. Happy to forgo a winger.

I'm guessing Xhaka will play in place of Le Coq, so we've replaced a perfectly good roof for a potentially slightly better roof but still have single glazed windows and a hit and miss boiler that quite often goes on the blink in winter.
Does seem a strange way to go about making a happy home.

25 Jul 2016 23:29:54
Whilst I agree maybe 30mil was was a bit too much to spend on a CM you have got to remember we lost 3 CM over the summer. Granted not the most needed but they still need replacing. But yea can't argue with the 30m going elsewhere.

26 Jul 2016 07:53:28
Yeah right oh Banbury, try reading a few of your previous posts to gauge pathetic.

If your not back tracking on something you've said previously your slagging players or manager.

Is Xhaka an improvement on most of the players you listed in midfield, is he not the type of player you and others have been calling for in midfield.

But if it means digging at Wenger for something else then your balls deep! πŸ™„πŸ™„.

Who should Arsenal pick as next captain? I'm not sure about mertesacker. I think Aaron Ramsey.

Well it won't be Ramsey, he will be open to offers if this season is a disaster.

Koscielny should be captain.

25 Jul 2016 22:34:51
Cech wouldn't be a bad choice.

Agree1 Disagree0

26 Jul 2016 00:17:30
Cech unless he keeps getting beat with low shots from outside the box or flaps like James at corners

He's a winner, talks sense, commands respect and sees the game in front of him. Plus we suck defending so a strong captain in the back 5 works for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2016 06:46:49
I'd like Ramsay as captain but him and Wilshere hate each other which could cause too much friction to give him the role.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2016 08:50:20
I would go for either Cech or Kos. This thing of a non-playing captain should be reserved for tennis. Ramsey currently won't make it into the starting eleven. Unless Wenger plays him out of position on the right wing again this season.

Banter.

It occurs to me that all of us are assuming that Wenger is seeking to either upgrade Giroud or replicate a griezmann style partnership with a new addition.

Why are we all (myself included) assuming this?

Facts we know:
Wenger is a big fan of Giroud,
he has a good touch
can link up play

He may well be the first choice again next year.

------
For the Griezman pairing, he would immiediately argue that he has this player in Sanchez and has a lot of options in the wide positions.

-------
Could it instead by that Wenger just wants some cover and competition upfront. Should we instead be speculating on players like:

Adrien Ramos (perhaps on loan)
Lucas (depor)
Germain
etc.

*I don't want these to happen, just posing the question?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

25 Jul 2016 15:03:55
I'm a big fan of Giroud, but I would admit, especially after last season, we won't win the league with Olly as our main striker.

Unless, we sign a top top player like Mahrez, who would add much more assist's and goals than the likes of Campbell and Walcott.

We missed out on Mkhitaryan, we cannot miss out on Mahrez, he will take us to another level.

Agree2 Disagree1

25 Jul 2016 15:55:00
I don't know whether wenger likes him or not, in them terms but i do know he has dropped him and replaced him a couple of times while he has been at arsenal and i think his barren spell which coincided with us failing in our challenge again.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jul 2016 16:36:52
I think if Arsene is looking to add a striker, it HAS to be an upgrade on Giroud.
Because if it isn't, Arsene won't spend the money.
If he wants a striker just to add to the numbers, as a back up or partner to Giroud, Akpom will stay around and have that role.

And as you say, if it's just to play 2 up top, Alexis will play there.

As far a I see it, if we don't sign Mahrez (providing we are in for him) then there won't be any major additions to the team this window.
Ed001 confirmed (I believe it was anyway. the memory isn't great) that we've had a bid lying out the for Mahrez for a while and it's really up to Mahrez what happens (and of course Leicester accepting a bid, but I feel we have the money to convince them, it's more about Mahrez doing a Vardy, if the offer is real)

I'm still trying to be positive about the window, but there just seems to be so little progress.
Look how long it took us to sign Holding.

'You want Β£2m? Here's Β£800k. '

'We'll accept Β£1.7m'

'Here's Β£805k'

For a club that 'only wants its top targets' we don't seem to be prepared to go get them.

If we were signing a player because we NEED one in x position, but he's not our first or second choice, I could understand being hesitant.

But if you're saying that you want THAT player, that he's the one that will improve us, then you can't follow that up with 'only at our price though'

What I will say, is if we go for him, get a bid accepted and he rejects us to stay at Leicester, then that's out of our hands (unless of course he wants Β£100k a week and we offer him a zero hours, Β£15 a week deal) and we just have to begrudgingly accept it.

Like dags says, we missed out on Mkhitaryan (if we did ever want him) and on paper he would of been a superb signing.
If we are actually in for Mahrez, we should be pulling all the stops for him, Leicester want Β£40m?
Give them Β£45m, a 2 year loan of Campbell and first refusal on any player we sell. (I like to exaggerate, sue me)
Because I assume we aren't the only team who'd like Mahrez and if Chelsea or City and co come in for him, I can promise they won't haggle over a few quid.

God, I can feel my posts getting more negative by the day, before long, I'll be yelling at passers by to get off my lawn.

I like giroud! He's a really nice guy.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jul 2016 16:59:13
I never believed Giroud was / is being replaced. We have little alternative to him in the absence of Welback. It's either Akpom, who is very inexperienced or Walcott, who hasn't impressed as a central striker.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jul 2016 17:11:29
For me as I mentioned last week giroud cost us under 10 million. Almost as if he was bought for being back up or battling for first. Yet in truth let's be honest he has had to do it alone for a while now. I like him as a person and player. But players do go through bad phases. We have no one to keep him on his toes.

Agree0 Disagree1

25 Jul 2016 17:52:06
Not trying to be overly negative, I am just trying drill into what Wenger is thinking.

For example, with Xkaha he acted very quickly and with purposes. He clearly decided the central midfield was not balanced.

The fact that he is dithering bit here makes think he is not certain Giroud is the problem and the Euro's probably put him in 2 minds again.

I told you Chelsea would spoil you plans for mahrez and other big players. They are well known for stepping in and offering more wages etc, just look at us with hazard, William, and batstshyi all nearly done to join spurs and then Chelsea throw their money in the ring and it's all over.
