Great game today especially for the neutral! I thought today highlighted the players that this season have received some stick for a few of their displays and today proved critics wrong! Arteta - not a typical DM and certainly doesn't have the strength and power like his opposite Diame today but played very well! Was great in winning the ball and giving the back 4 support! Was an outlet in turning defence into attack from the edge of our 18 and brought us up the pitch, and his passing was great, able to dictate the tempo and always giving us an option so we could retain the ball. As Banbury has said, I find some of the negativity after that win a bit ridiculous. There have been a couple of undesirable parts of our game shown in the past few fixtures, but I think some gooners have forgotten what it's like to mount a title challenge. Look at key title-winning performances by Man U and Chelsea over the last 5-10 years and you will see a catalogue of errors, dodgy play and lucky decisions. But you need that in your favour.

It wasn't a stellar performance today but we were too strong for West Ham. What's the big issue? We've played some beautiful football this season already, one more battling victory against the Toon and we'll be going in to 2014 top, halfway to 84 points.

There were also positive sides to the performance. Vermaelen, while not as slick as Koscielny, is about as good as it gets as a CB stand-in and a big reason why we only conceded 1 goal in 2 games. Same goes for Arteta, who had a couple of scrappy moments but kept Hazard out of the game on Monday and batttled again today. Giroud is knackered and needs competition better than Bendtner. He was slack today but still got a good assist. His goal/assist ratios this season are still strong, he has just had a poor scoring run and needs a rest. As I say, we need better competition than Bendtner, ie a new signing in January. Particularly as Poldi looks like he'll be played on the wing.

As for Walcott and Poldi, they are huge goal threats and top players. Theo keeps getting criticism and keeps scoring, Poldi is just class. If he stays fit he'll make a huge difference.

So basically chin up, guys. We were spectacular early in the season and are still winning even without the same level of class. Things look good for the future as long as we can keep it up.

Amongst all the negative posts on here that is a great post.
Well done Oleg. Respect.

Welcome back Podolski

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It's just nice having a player that is willing to put his foot through it, and has a decent shot on him. He reminds me a bit of Ljunberg in that he makes well timed runs off the ball. I think he's going to enjoy playing with Özil and Cazorla who hopefully provide him with plenty of assists.

Evening people,,

Happy with the result, no sorry, very happy with the result. Any away win is great, no matter who you are playing. If they are near the top, they are fighting for points to win the league or qualify for CL or Europa, and if they are near the bottom they want the points to avoid relegation, so any game, from now until the end of the season, will be tricky. Make no mistake, an away win at West Ham is a great result.

The performance was not very good IMO. Some people are having a go at Theo, just don't understand that one, he scored twice, what more do you want?

On the subject of Giroud. Tricky one. This guy is always going to divide opinions. We may as well start calling him Olly Marmite, because you either love him or hate him.

I think, in terms of what he brings to the team, the positives outweigh the negatives. He's great at leading the line and holding the ball up for our attacking midfielders but, when our Mids are not getting forward enough and not scoring, than we cannot rely on Olly to score the goals to win the game.

He missed 2 great chances against Chelsea and the same against West Ham today, luckily Theo and Podolski saved the day.

He's not an out and out goalscorer and I think you need one if you want to win things. That said, I would still start him against Newcastle because I believe he just needs a goal to regain some confidence and than maybe start scoring.

In my opinion, i'm not sure if I consider Ozil world class. Great player yes, world class, no.
Ronaldo, world class. Messi, world class. Ozil, great player.

World class players win you games on a regular basis, even if your team are not playing very well.
Messi has been doing it for years, as too Ronaldo, year after year after year on a regular basis.

Before you jump down my throat, i'm talking about Ozil as he is now. Of course, he needs time to settle, time to adjust to the speed/pace of the English game, he should be judged from next season and not this. That said, its a results business and when you pay £42million you expect an immediate payback on your dividend. That's not my rules, just the rules of football in general.

So, we are top of the league and i'm very very happy. Our performances over the last 6 games are erratic to say the least, but we are on the right road. Where that road takes us to come May is anybody's guess.

NO CHILDREN OR SMALL ANIMALS WERE HURT IN THE MAKING OF THIS POST.

Sorry, that was my post above lol

MKD - you have to agree that Theo had a big impact on our 4th place finish and will have a big role this season

Does he frustrate - yes

Do I want him in an Arsenal shirt - yes

Can Theo improve - yes

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Mate don't get me wrong, I didn't want to have a go or smth.

1. Things I like:
- He pops out of nowhere and scores a goal or two.

2. Things I don't like:
- He is inconsistent
- He can't dribble
- Always look to pass backwards
- Constantly gets pushed off the ball
- Not really that good at taking set pieces (I mean when you have Ozil, Cazorla much better technicians why Theo?)

Other example he can't make himself a space to cross the ball in 1 on 1 situations.
I like him as a sub to come on after 65 min.
But that's just my opinion. I like wingers that can take on their man dribble and cross the ball.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh and I don't think he can improve

Forgot that one sorry ;)

I think this is the best arsenal team with podli back, switch arteta and flamini around, carzola through the middle who I thought was excellent today, in front you got giroud ozil wallcott and podolski.

This might leave us a little frail at the back, but I still think that's the way to go

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Poldi Ozil Theo behind the striker all day

With the way Giroud plays and Ozil creates, we need wide players who can shoot and score

Eventually I want Jack and Rambo behind that as our engine

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't know why everyone is so quick to push out Arteta, please recall he did not play in the Man City fiasco. Kept it clean v Chelsea etc He is the starter and Flamini is the superb back up that we have needed - full stop, if you don't believe me then believe the boss cause it looks like he sees it the same way!

Cheers

Giroud missed a lot of chances today and arteta looked vulnerable Theo was quite beside his goals but carzola was quality in the second half when he played in the middle ozil needs to be benched for a couple of matches he's done OK but nothing special. Bendtner is probably a better striker of the ball but giroud is a btr team player a lot of flaws today but 3points the most important thing now let's go on a runn

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Quiet besides his goals? Bit of a contradiction me thinks!

Top of the league with a far far inferior budget to CFC and MCFC - Wenger can't be as bad as some of you make out!

Great result today away from home

Now off to Newcastle to cement our lead

Lets get behind the team and the players

I know people questioned the lack of subs against CFC but I wouldn't have changed anything either as we looked like the only team to score

Great to see Pod back and great to see Theo on the scoresheet again - quality player and would much rather have him than play against him

Theo has scored a lot of important goals and contributed key assists over last few seasons. Can't work out why our fans sag him off - leave that for dicks like waddle and co.

There are times when he has just one player in the box to aim for, I remember Barca only being worried about one player. Give him a break. He works hard and contributes well to our team.

We are a team where the eleven players at up to a better team than they are individually which makes us hard to play against.

Can we improve - YES

Can we win the league - YES especially if we add two plates in Jan

Lets push them over the line as we all have a key part to play

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with the last three lines of your post. But you and I must be watching a different Theo.

1. Rambo needed a rest, management knew this

If thigh is torn, he likely misses Bayern

2. If he doesn't go off, Poldi doesn't get on, the reason we won the match

Why was he not starting?

Just what the hell is going on in the locker room?

I am one dumbfounded Gunner

Beating West Ham is not an achievement when you wanna win the league. But the way we needed luck on our side is unacceptable

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Totally agree with everything you said in this and previous posts. Today's display was a disgrace.
We were debating before Giroud needs a back up. It seems we need a first team player, the back up is already here.

Agree0 Disagree0

That is where you are wrong because winning away at the likes of West Ham is an achievement if you want to win the league, and away at Cardiff and Fulham etc these teams who are in a dogfight do not give you any time on the ball.

well done Arsenal

Newcastle and Cardiff next please

Agree0 Disagree0

And I should add. how much luck did M City have against us. and Chelsea the other night when we should have had a penalty.

so come on US

Agree0 Disagree0

Ok, a disgrace is an exaggeration.
I apologize for that.
Just wanted to say I expected much more from this match.

Agree0 Disagree0

What luck? We completely dominated the game.
I really don't get why there is soo much negativity.
We are top of the table!!
Beating any team away in the league is not easy!!
These are the games we need to win to win the league. Where nothing goes for us, but still able to create plenty, control the game and win it.
No team can play 38 games at their best.
I think your taking our season for granted, now all of a sudden you think we should be winning every game. Need to get real people.

Agree0 Disagree0

What a good post Waq Perfectly put.
If anyone was to pop on our page I dread to think what they might think of us given our position after 18 games

Agree0 Disagree0

After the way we played the last three, this should have been a convincing performance from the get go

It wasn't

If West Ham was accurate today, they have at least 3

Knowing teams will park the bus and counter till we score, we need that striker to get that breakthrough

It's not Giroud

All of our elite strikers of the past had high work rate and great link play, but they were world class goal scorers too

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't mean to throw petrol on the fire, but good reply Waq1. (and good comment from G62)
But, I also understand where US Gooner is coming from. Like I put in a recent post, Giroud will continue to divide opinion, not just from supporters in general but also from us gooners.
Its a tricky one, watch this space.

Walcott's feet are too fast for his brain. Does he know that he has to make a quality pass? Does he know that he can't just run through players? Jesus.

And Arteta's clearance is one of the reasons why I don't rate him at defensive mid. He's not very athletic. Plus, why was he on the 6? He should have been marking the guy on the box who shot!

I don't think the goal was Szcz's fault. The man on the box should have scored it before the rebound.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Excellent 2nd half from Arsenal,, now
3-1 up, win the next two league games and it really will restore some confidence

Agree0 Disagree0

Think Theo scored 2 goals against City and now 2 against hammers in last 3 games - not too bad?

No one's brain is as quick as his feet nor our the people who are meant to get into the box to make the wingers job easier rather than trying to hit one Arsenal head against 4 defenders plus a keeper

Agree0 Disagree0

I thought Arteta was the man of the match today, and the only one that actually played in the first half.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Dec 2013 16:03:15
Oh Giroud,

why couldn't you have just tapped it in with your right foot instead of using your left and miss the ball completely.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

As much as I like Giroud I feel he could be the difference with Arsenal being nearly rans to Champons

Disappointed in the scoreline. How have we not scored yet? We've had plenty of chances: Santi's, Giroud's, Theo's, Arteta's. If West Ham is going to sit back on their 18, I would like to see us take a long range shot or two.

By the way, whoever said Ozil is not "world class" is wrong. Just look at his skill to get away from two West Ham defenders then bolt behind their backline to play a perfect ball across the keeper to Giroud, who should have scored.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Dec 2013 15:50:56
Giroud is one of the worst strikers we have ever had

People who think otherwise have zero clue, zero

We have no business being level at the half

Giroud is a bum, plain and simple

How many more do we leave on the board? How many!?!?

I don't care if he scores 4 in the second half, after Jan, I hope I only see him after minute 80

What a joke, w Poldi sitting on bench too

One change today from a squad that played 90 Monday

Wtf are you doing Arsene?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yep.cant disagree with that .

Agree0 Disagree0

Then you know naff all, his interplay with players is excellent.

He will never be a Suarez or Van Persie but he is an excellent team player

Agree0 Disagree0

The blokes goals tally is not impressive but a bum? Then class me as knowing nothing about the game and I mean nothing, because I see a team performer who lacks goals but excels in other parts of the game.
Happy to have him wear our shirt and would be gutted if he swapped not for another

Agree0 Disagree0

We won the match because of Poldi

When was Giroud's last goal, what we pay him to do

He is invisible against the good teams, his link play his only attribute against bad teams

That better Banbury?

Agree0 Disagree0

Also Banbury, good team players should be squad players

Match winners play Striker for Arsenal Football Club

Agree0 Disagree0

Best we relegate kos Mett Flamini and Ozil to the depths of the squad along with Giroud then if goals are all that count. Madness.
Yes we need an out and out goals scorer but who ever we get had better score in every game to get some appreciation from those who really know the game

Agree0 Disagree0

What's all this rage USG, it's not like you. Giroud may not be the best striker in the league but to call him a bum is a bit excessive. I also think his recent form is bellow par, but every player hits a rough patch at some point. I also believe we need another striker in January, maybe the competition and a little break would help him improve his form. Don't be so quick to pull the trigger and turn on your own players. So many times we've been proved wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

There are times when Ozil has been invisible,,,,,,,,, that cannot be argued at 42 million quid, I would say there is more pressure on him to perform than Giroud, Yes Ozil is world Class but he has been out of games as much as Giroud IMO

lets just agree to disagree :)

Have to say comments are right with regards to Ramsey, he looks burnt out, I would have rested him today and for the Newcastle game, now we have yet another injury.

Jack back for the toon game at least

26 Dec 2013 14:34:01

Well Christmas has come and gone. I got an Arsenal lighter, an Arsenal ashtray, two Arsenal mugs, and two Arsenal shirts. One with Dennis on it, the other with gooner on it. The upside is I have a loving family who know me very well. Or the downside is I've found out that my general conversation is very much based on the one topic?

Quick question.
You find yourself at the family Christmas gathering, and you end up spending the night with a fit young lady who you've only ever met many years before. Who just so happens to be a first cousin. The question is "is it legal?"
I'm asking on behalf of a mate you understand, and not me in anyway. He's asked me to ask you. Thanks, make it quick! For my mate!

Hope we can break down a defensive West ham today. Going to need a bit of guile. UP THE GOONERS

A great display with an emphatic win would be ideal today but a 1 0 drab affair would do.

We simply have to get 3 pts today, its unbelievably tight at the top but one by one teams will drop away from the leading pack by the end of January and we can't afford to be one of them

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Absolutely mate,

A win is a win as long as we get the 3 points.

Got a gut feeling Giroud is going to score 2 goals today, than again it might just be the turkey sandwich I just ate for lunch.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well DG if he does its our duty to keep you in turkey sarnies throughout 2014 mate, you know how much you like them :-) it could be your breakfast dinner and tea for the year ahead mate

Hi Ed,

I watched and listened with interest before the Chelsea game Arsene stating an emphatic 'Non' when asked about new players coming onboard in January, he then further elucidated by saying " but that can change"
A stark contrast to the Suarez and Mesut situation.
Always lots of names associated with us, and the names are getting more " interesting " certainly Mesut will help attract a different set of 'names' however,
who do you see actually coming onboard?
All the top top top quality strikers are tied down or CL tied, so only would help domestically, I guess the WC looming will dissuade a few from changing in Jan as well, what are you thoughts on the matter

Believable0 Unbelievable0

26 Dec 2013 05:31:41
i have a list of players that I think are likely options for arsenal in there january window which are:

1.Diago Costa
2.Jackson Martinez
3.Pedro
4.Benteke
5.Lavezzi
6.El Shaarawy

which one would you prefer? I would like Costa or Martinez

who do you think is most likely to be brought in

please answer

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Costa or Pedro

Agree0 Disagree0

Diego Costa, from what I have seen of him he's very very good and has an amazing scoring record.

Agree0 Disagree0

Costa seems to be available 92 and although I know little about him everyone seems keen.

Agree0 Disagree0

Costa and Pedro are my picks. I'm not a fan of Pedro on Barcelona, but if he moved to Arsenal, I would be.

I would guess Martinez seems most likely to be brought in as he's hinted at a move to us a few days ago.
