Interesting to see Gabriel have a go at Perez yesterday over defensive duties. Pity Monreal couldn't give Iwobi the same treatment every once in a while. Actually last week himself and Sterling were in acres of space when De Bruyne switched play. It is a major let down, our backs not supported.

In a situation like that iwobi can't be expected to be covering monreal, when a 70 yard diagonal pass is played. Monreal and the central defender should deal with it. It was poor defending by monreal not closing him down quick enough not iwobi that time.

It's one of the major weaknesses of Wengers system as the wide midfield players need to work back to protect the fullbacks. Last season Mobeal looked ok as he had Sanchez working back. This season his lack of pace has been exposed, clearly illustrating that we need a better LB and wide players that cover our full backs.

What happens when this new LB gets exposed by our system? We fix the system I guess.
Sounds a bit like refusing to put any petrol in your car until you insist on spending a fortune on a new engine first but only to release that this new engine won't run without and fuel either, personally I would go for the petrol option first.

Steve a winger should always be looking for danger when we don't have the ball. To leave me monreal isolated like that against one of the quickest players in the league was hard to stomach. You wouldn't put up with it in an under 16 match.

Monreal has been been isolated all season and here we are almost in January still talking who what where and why! It's almost as if we have see the problem for atleast 2 or 3 seasons to be absolutely 100% certain beyond any possible doubt it exists before we do anything about it, it was exactly the same with no DM and lack of a effective partner for Kos which why everytime we finally get round to plugging a hole another 1 or 2 new holes appear, Kos and Caz are how old now? 2 more holes on the horizon which should tie in nicely with just as we finally get around to fixing our defensive issues on the left.

Gunner good defending requires good coaching and each to know their jobs in situations, we are a joke at times as far as organisation for defending. I have never known a team near the top of the league, always look like its all last ditch or kitchen sink defending. The manager is to blame.

RG you are too kind to wenger, what system?

27 Dec 2016 19:51:42
Steve, you are cruel. I don't always agree with all that Wenger does, but he is a top manager and will be difficult to replace. Who do you suggest we replace him with, that would or is available?

Steve everyone but chelsea misses Kante mate, he was brilliant in last season premier league winning team and there's a very good chance he will repeat that achievement this season too.

27 Dec 2016 20:21:11
No i'm not cruel, I speaketh the truth. You ask me who is available, well that's not my job and I have given my thoughts numerous times but I will say this. Leicester won the league last season with a new manager and at this moment, three teams lie above us with new nanagers, one being 9 points ahead of us after we beat them well. Southampton are doing well with a new manager, so there are plenty still out there for our club to find. I don't hold any fears in that department, that we can't find a better manager than the present one. The new age manager shall we call them are doing well.

If Arsene leaves in the summer we will need to be patient with whoever takes over, Klopp Gardiola Conte Mourinho and Koeman will all have a season head start on him.

Gunner I think whoever comes in will have a great chance to get us flying quickly. I think wenger is not helping the team progress. We are stagnant and need rejuvenating by a modern manager.

Steve mate I don't think it will be the automatic walk in the park some people think it will be.
I'm not sure Conte could have taken over Arsenal last summer and had the same almost instant impact he's had at Chelsea, after couple of short bedding in months he has them looking extremely formidable.
For me it will take the next man 2 to 3 seasons to make the changes in personal and mentality to make us capable of mixing it with the best again.

Steve, you like to pick examples that prove your point. Are any of the teams above us not playing European football? How are Leicester dong this season? How have other managers faired in first season? Ask Utd et al.

Hope the rose tinted and gift of optimism arrives this Christmas as boy do you need some ๐Ÿ˜‰ Anyway merry Christmas and hope you have a HAPPY new year.

Sy my point is not knit picking, its showing all the red specs that there are very good managers out there, every season, so all the ones who say there isn't can see there is. If you want yo start a new debate, be my guest.

Oh and sy most years the top teams in the top 3 or 4 are nearly always playing European football.

Last season - Leicester -> not in Europe
This season Chelsea -> not in Europe nor are second place

City - Pep is not setting the world on fire despite a ridiculously expensive squad plus blank cheque book.

Utd - difficult to replace Fergie ( 3rd manager plus multi millions on players)

Spurs - nothing to note

Liverpool - see above plus nothing yet

Not saying Wenger is not replaceable and please note my comments past and present ( no rose specs) but it WILL be difficult to upgrade and get results BUT not impossible

Also - you would have to have your head up your own arxx not to appreciate that wengers done a decent job and deserves respect. As well as Coq ain't the best tackler in the world plus that CFC success is not just down to Kante

The Mesut and Olly combo came up trumps again yesterday as it did so often last season when Ozil was the undisputed heavy wieght champion of assists, interestingly without Olly playing this season Mesut doesn't even make the top 20 in the assists league table so far this season.
With Olly we are also a lot tighter as a unit allowing Sanchez to play on the left of midfield and help out our left back but this rules out us playing our fast paced attacking game.
So should we
A play Olly and reduce the chances we concede per game
B go for the pacey attacing style and rely on taking more of our chances than we give our opponents.

Giroud is a cart horse not a thourerbred. Recipy to failure in my view, he's not good enough. Welbeck would be a better option but fitness will be a problem.

I just had a quick peek at the 5 PL fixtures before we play Chelsea and they are all very winnable. Whilst Chelsea have 3 tricky away fixtures during the same period; Liverpool, the Toot and Leicester. We could easily be only 3 points behind Chelsea when we play them. We should have players back from injury in January; Mustafi, Mertesacker, Welbeck, Ox, Debuchy &Walcott. With Cazorla hopefully back in February as well. Looking forward to the new year, although I would love to see us tie up Ozil and Sanchez on long term deals and make a quality signing in the winter window.
