Just wanted to ask some opinions.
Who would you say is the better left back.
Kieran Gibbs or Luke Shaw?.
If Luke Shaw has just been transferred for £30 million how much is Kieran Gibbs worth?
Ok we know Kieran Gibbs is 24 and Luke Shaw is 19 in July but really is he worth £30 million?
On that basis would you say Gibbs is worth the same, more, or less.
Without being biased I think Kieran Gibbs is a better player I just don't get the valuation of Luke Shaw. It can't be that much of a premium just because he has 5 years on Kieran Gibbs.

The money they paid is insane, but they're investing in the next 12 years or so with him.
Even if he doesn't improve greatly. But yes I think it's mad money, plus what they're paying him in wages!
It's a transfer that won't begin to pay itself off for 3 years minimum IMO

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree goldboy without doubt Gibbs best left back in England honest

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally I think luke shaw will be a super star. Gibbs is not in the same class i'm afraid.
Only my opinion but I think he could be as good as bale.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jun 2014 00:18:02
While shaw is an exciting young prospect
(Over priced) I'd say gibbs is the better player at the min, but shaw has the potential to be better.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jun 2014 00:14:08
Gibbs every time.
Stronger on the ball and a better engine, both very good going forward.

Shaw does have a better injury record than Gibbo though and massive potential.

Agree0 Disagree0

£30m is huge for a left back, but they're not just playing that for him now, as Sheeny says, they are investing in the next 12 years or so, if 10 of those 12 years are top quality service, it's money well spent.

For me, Shaw is better than Gibbs already and has the potential to be better than Cole, he is something really special, if his potential can be reached, there's only one left back in the world who will be better and that's Alaba.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - £30m is a massive amount for potential akie..

Different players with different roles, but Gibbs is massively underrated IMHO. Gibbs is better though. You see what his game is about when he isn't on the pitch, we're a completely different team. Nothing clicks the same -:(.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gibbs all day long, excellent player IMO

When Pochettino left Southampton, people predicted an exodus of players leaving.

most predicted,

A) Rickie Lambert to Liverpool.

B) Adam Lallana to Liverpool.

C) Luke Shaw to Man Utd

D) Schneiderlin to Arsenal.

No prizes for guessing which one hasn't, and probably wont, get completed.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

28 Jun 2014 00:09:12
Hopefully not IMO.

Schneiderlin is a good player but not the talent that we need.
Nor are Balotelli/Benzema (over rated and over priced)
Remy (squad player)
Debuchy (would be and improvement but Aurirer is the Ivorian Shaw so to speak)

Agree0 Disagree0

Reason for is because we are after frying bigger fish I promise

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - well arsene does seem to be having a WHALE of a time MG.

Aurier isn't the ivorian shaw, he's better and I think will be better for longer.
trouble with aurier is African cup of nations

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - would you say no to yaya toure for the same reason ink?..

28 Jun 2014 18:30:55
LOLS INK!
And to think we have been accused of over hyping our players, he ain't even your player (yet) but signing for arsenal make him worldclass ain't that right stoner ;-)

I wonder y this amazing right back is not being chased by every top club in the world! :-)

Only ribbing ya mate, he is very good but to suggest he's amywhere near worldclass yet is a little premature imo

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jun 2014 20:52:43
No one mentioned world class CTR

Agree0 Disagree0

Best wide midfielder in france this season.

i know france isn't the PL or spain or bundesliege but still, I don't think shaw retains the ball enough but I didn't say shaw was crap Chris.

i think both will be in their prime. though with the english press and his comfy wage at utd I think shaw may lose his edge.

hope he proves me wrong and scores the winner at the next world cup final. but I won't be :P

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh and ed, i'd say no to yaya if he wanted too much $$$ of a contract. I mean rooney amounts.

but for the african cup of nations noooo.

also we have oodles of midfielders and only 1 'senior' RB at the mo. so the ACoN wouldn't hit us as hard in the centre

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed027's Note - Yaya is on around 200k at least

27 Jun 2014 22:14:53
A message to submarine Commander Jinkent, whilst watching the half time talk on the TV coverage from Brazil the other day I'm sure I saw I periscope in the distance over Ian Wright's left shoulder, was that you?
If so what's Arsene been up to? How's his tan and was he talking to anyone you recognised who might be a potential signing?

I'm still trying to figure out which button on FIFA WORLD CUP 2014 makes Suarez bite Italians.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You need to slide tackle the player first, then move suarez over the fallen player before the referee sees it, and press X, its like jungle mania

I was just playing as England on FIFA world cup 2014 on my sons PS4 and was shocked at how realistic it is.

Me and my wife have been together a long time, and our favourite sexual position is the England World Cup Squad.
Neither of us know what we're doing or why we're there, there's no passion, no communication and we never even make it past the first stage. It's often accompanied by a very bad soundtrack, horrible dribbling and never ever a clean sheet. It's always over far too quickly and when it does end I know it will be at least another 4 years before it happens again.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - love it golds..

As things stand its looking very much like
Chelski and city fighting it out at the top

And utd Liverpool and us fighting it out for 3/4
Everton ready to pounce should things go badly for two of the 3 above them.
A lot can and might change between now and August 16th but there's no doubt the two strongest squads of 13/14 have already widened the gap further still over the summer

Believable0 Unbelievable0

27 Jun 2014 20:32:13
We have to be patient mate but I must admit its annoying picking up a paper or watching ssn and seeing our rivals signing players left right and centre.

On the plus side I won £10 on lottery, so hey ho its not all doom and gloom.

That's kebabs sorted for me and Remy tonight.

Agree0 Disagree0

Congrats on the tenner Dags and tell remy I'm resigned to him joining us now, I'm also resigned the cost of living rising and politicians lying I'm not happy about either of them either but accept them, hey ho It happens :-)

I'll do you one better dags. Last week a fella came into me in the shop he wanted to buy a few cans of beer for €7.50
he was counting up his change and I saw he had a €2 scratch card. Told him I'd take €5.50 and the scratch card.

Won €25! He was gutted!

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jun 2014 19:52:20
Have been away for a hol and have not seen anything about us signing anyone yet except we are unwilling to lay out the money upfront for Aurier. With all the cash we are supposed to have, surely this cannot be correct? The chavs, man poo, pool and city are already buying players, why aren't we, we will end up like last year, new additions being thrown in without knowing their teammates. Surely we have learned by now!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

27 Jun 2014 20:36:19
If it is the case that we didn't sign Aurier because we refused to stump up £8m upfront than its an absolute disgrace.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jun 2014 00:17:34
Agree with dag gun
at 8m he's almost a quarter the price of Shaw, never mind the difference in wages even. Absolute bargain that chap for that money. Forget Debuchy
Aurier is one of the next great full-backs IMO

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm with you dags u scratch mine and I'm always scratching yours

27 Jun 2014 09:46:36
Eds,

Apparently we are linked with Debuchy, does that mean we have no more interest in Serge Aurier?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed030's Note - I would assume so. }

27 Jun 2014 19:28:49
Thanks Ed

Agree0 Disagree0

Are we aiming for newcastles ambitions?
Remy, Debuchy? jesus give the man a contract and we are lining up the next set of deadwood

Agree0 Disagree0

If we can't sign Aurier because of money then there is no hope for our transfer window.

Anyone else think Monreal + £10m for Schneiderlin would be good? Monreal is replaceable in terms of quality and Southampton need a LB, and Schneiderlin has really impressed me over the season and in his World Cup campaign. I have all my faith in Wenger this summer, COYG!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

27 Jun 2014 18:54:51
I would take 'Spyder' (thanks Jen), any day of the week.

Top quality DM.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't want to lose LB cover, and I don't think southampton will sell schneiderlin for cheap, considering the amounts they have extracted for shaw and Lallana.

Lars Bender or Khedira is my hope, but with wenger playing beach ball before he gets back we may end up having to resign diaby

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jun 2014 00:18:35
They'd never bite

Agree0 Disagree0

All for replacing Montreal he's to slow for the strength and height (heading ability) but I'm aiming higher than sneiderlain. He's good for Southampton but not champions league contender ability, I expect either Everton or the slum to acomadate him. Coyg we must expect more he's no more than a sub for a good team

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jun 2014 17:57:55
Ed - not to sound stupid (knowing full well that the question will inevitibly sound stupid. )

But the word "enquiry" is thrown around a lot in the media and on this page.

Is the any sort of formal/official process (i.e letter/notification/etc) or just clubs touching base on the player?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - there is a variety of them. An official enquiry would be written down. They can also make an official enquiry verbally. Basically it means when they don't use reps to sound out the ballpark figure wanted and instead ask outright between the two clubs. Most enquiries tend to be between representatives, and informal.}

27 Jun 2014 17:24:43
Arsenal boys for Germany were class yesterday

Ozil is starting to hit that stride where he's unstoppable

Enjoy the ride, because in September he's going to give it back to a hell of a lot of naysayers in the media

Match by match you will see the best player in the Prem

I still can't believe we got him, one year later

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Me either USG, its hard to think of who we could possibly sign in this window to match the excitement of signing Mesut Ozil.
The day we signed him I couldn't sit still thinking something was going to happen and and scupper the move at the last minute, what a signing!
Who within the realm's of reasonable possibly could give us that affect this summer?
Pogba would do it for me

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jun 2014 19:02:43
Agree but if we don't get some more quality upfront, Ozil could be a waste.

No good having the best assist maker in the business if he has nobody to pass to.

Granted, Rambo and Walcott will be back but we need more upfront.

Griezman and Remy will do nicely.

Agree0 Disagree0

Reus for me unfortunately that is as likely as suarez playing again within the next 4 months.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jun 2014 19:27:05
I agree, but we need to get a proper dm in so Ozil can concentrate on one side of the field, also we need a pacy winger/striker he can feed.Sanchez is the one I hope for,he is fading away in the shadow of Messi in Barca. It's a pity,he is one of the best players around

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jun 2014 20:00:33
Too many rumors to keep track of

But Cuadrado, Vidal and Di Maria are those types that would leave me in disbelief

Agree0 Disagree0

Should we not add what's needed this summer I think this will be Ozils second and final season in an Arsenal shirt, hope it doesn't come to that but it wouldn't bode well for future singings if our only top signing of recent years bailed out because of lack of ambition by the club

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jun 2014 15:41:38
Ok, so spoke to this taxi driver, whose mate met someone in the pub whose brother works with someone whose uncle was speaking to a worker at Luton aiport, who said that. Ok, I don't know anything really- but listen!

How's everyone's stress levels doing, what with other club's beginning to make real progress?

I, who like to think of myself as one of the calm, patient ones, who laughs at the 'now, now, now. waa. waa' modern culture, am starting to worry (I can almost feel the cortisol pooling together in me noggin)

Anyway, there is a point to this. I need distraction. I need names, exciting names, being linked to Arsenal (even if I have to write em down my f**King self), and I know I'm not alone!

So, dream window time. Here's my own. All bar one have been the subject of rumours- some very strong- so far, and none are any more unlikely individually, or only a tad (Vidal), than the Ozil purchase.

With these signings, we would in my opinion be resounding favourites for the title, all are players I have watched at least a couple of times, mostly much more than that.

Aurier (7-10 mill)
Rodrigo Ciao (6-10)
Arturo Vidal * (40-50+)
Sanchez (25-35)
Emmer Valencia (10-18) *
Joe Gomez (Charlton) (errm 3-10)
a goalkeeper (whatever!)

There we go, that'd be golden in centre mid, with striker and wide areas looking exceptionally exciting, right back a tiny worry (thanks to inexperience) but at the same time very exciting and with the chance for three young rb's we currently have to get their chanc;, plus two great, fast (still worry a lot about Merts pace) prospects for centre half.

And all (supposing nobody asks for too much in this, year two of FFP. Amen) for around hundred mill (coinciding with that mythical figure in the bank).

In the fantasy world where me make those signings, I would be more than willing to accept- common sense demands it in fact- the sale of one or both of Santi and Podolski.

And ok, go on then, we should bid for Pat Roberts of Fulham as well. he is going to be utterly fantastic and very soon may be unbuyable apart from for the top four or five spenders in Europe.

(Come on eds, let it through. I admit upfront I don't have access to the tiniest bit of new information, and am but a crazy Gooner, with too much time on his hands, and a dream)

* already I see one of the eds is spoiling my dreaming with this damn realism of his with regards to Valencia. It'll be that bloody Mendes behind it. Always is. From the day he took Cristiano away, he has seemed determined to kill us.

Shaw-30mil
Lalana-25mil
Southampton should be happy personally I think lallana is overrated not to sure about shaw only 18 30mil is a lot is he better than alaba or Moreno I don't think so English players are so overpriced caroll was £30mil downing was £18mil lescott 22mil wright Philips was 20 odd mil Milner was ££20mil I think the prices are a big reason most teams but foreigners who are usually better and cheaper

Apparently the Aurier deal hit a snag when Arsene discovered he'd been banned 3 times for tickling people, not silly little Tickle's either proper belly ones where their arms and legs go all over the place and they can't get their breath and he doesn't stop until they say he's the worlds best player 3 times

Weeks ago our beloved CEO Mr Gazidis stated that they were actively working hard behind the scenes to bring in new talent to the playing staff.
Well they must either have been working at snails pace or they are just damn incompetent, as nothing is happening exept continuos rumours. Why are we yet again doing nothing when our competitors steadily build and buy the better players to strenghten for next season. Our management team should pull their finger out and show some urgency to address this situation.

Good day to the finest fans in all the land :-)!

I will probably get ripped to shreds for this but here I go anyway (also posted it on the World cup page but also wanted to hear the views of my fellow fans). People have been advocating a 2 year ban for Suarez behaviour. I get it, this is the third time he has bitten someone and that is very unsportsman -like. But none of the players he has ever bitten had to miss long stretches of the season due to injury. In the same vein of punishment, FIFA should have punished the likes of Ryan Shawcross for his horrible, potentially career-ending tackle on Aaron Ramsey or the Nigel De Jong kick to Alonso in the last world cup final. The worst thing about a bite is that it is shocking for the player bitten as well as the fans. I agree it is unsportsman-like, undignified, unrefined, un-gamely, unusual etc. But at the end of the day, it's just a silly bite and will not prevent a player from continuing with the game. But some of the tackles in football deserve stronger punishment than a simple red card and missing 3 matches.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Rue! I think the fact that you state NONE OF THE PLAYERS HE'S EVER BITEN have missed long periods of the game, says it all :-)
You could also say of all the players he's bitten none have suffered long term damage, doesn't sound any better does it :)
Let's face it there's no getting away from it the bloke has a real mental issue that makes him want to bite people and he can't stop it coming out when things aren't going his way, that is a serious issue to have

Agree0 Disagree0

A ten game ban won't stop him it is a mental problem. For the image of the sport he should be made to wear a mussle and at least when he tries again it won't cause any harm and allows him to carry on playing. It won't kill anyone but for the sake of kids we can't have him going around taking lumps out of any player who happens to be near him when he flips.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm with you original poster (Rue) but the football world, over here at least, absolutely isn't.

My argument isn't so much that Suarez deserves less (though 5 would do for me) but that dangerous play (forget intent, can't be proved) should be more, and dangerous play which results in serious injuries much more again.

As it stands, players are now more aware than ever that biting is bad (as if anyone, bar Luis, needed the lesson) while still aware, whether at the back, side, front, wherever of their brain, that they can basically use any amount of force in a challenge, however late, causing any amount of damage and, supposing they haven't previously threatened a player or brought both feet off the ground froma mile away. three matches is the worst that can happen.

That's the state of play here and arguably only an injury to a media darling could prompt any change.

Thing is, the Shawcrosses, Taylors and whatever the **** was from Sunderland never quite tackled the same against others as they do us, and certainly not against Fergie's lot (coincidentally, all the breaks came against teams managed by pals and proteges of him), so the threat will be higher than it should be again next year, and no-one should expect anything like justice if it happens again.

But (admittedly weird and deserving of decent punishment) biting, biting. oh, criminal! defang him! Tie a chain around him so he can accompany Sepp to his meetings to show what that moralist does with cheats.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i think there will still be some good players coming G62, but arsene needs to get a rattle on before all the top targets get snapped up mate..

Thanks Ed, I'm hoping to get the players to help us beat the teams we couldn't last season ie utd chelski city and Everton or what's the point of signing anyone at all.
I don't see 2 or 3 top players all arriving on deadline day so we need to being doing something pretty soon that's for sure, today would be ok but in the next hour would be better :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

Lallana and even Shaqiri joining liverpool

herrera and shaw all but done for man utd,

Diego Costa and cesc for chelsea,

and here we are talking of what ifs.

what happened to Aurier, are we even looking at a RB? why is he not being signed if his fee is as stated? is wenger looking at some super RB that we have no chance of landing?

nothing on the striker front? ffs Remy being linked is as bad as it gets.

CDM again just spurious news of Lars bender, and khedira interest, make a damn offer and get rejected atleast.

Either no one wants to join arsenal or those who make these deals are really bad at doing a job.

we turned down cesc so we could buy the players we needed, so far we have done nothing but turn away from players who want to join us due to transfer fee or wages, another terrible transfer window.

i remember wenger saying no deals will be done until the world cup is over, enough said

I read on an Arsenal page(forgot where)that the reason that the Aurier deal may be of is that his abillities lies mostly in the attack and that Arsene wants his left wide defender to be the more attacking one.He thinks it would jepardise the defence to much.Personaly I don't recall Gibbs being the attacking one and if the Debuchy rumour is true, isn't he the same kind as Aurier. What do you think. Is the Ivoryman deal done?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - he is 29 next month jack, and im with you mate, average..

Would prefer Jenks over him or even Richards surely we can get Richards for cheap seeing as city have got two of the best RB in football at the moment?

Maybe Wenger sees Jenkinson as the future RB. Maybe he is just getting someone with experience to rotate with him until he fully finds his feet? Just speculating

Ed025. How do you Eds decide who answers what on this site. Do you all have a live feed when posts come in and whoever is available or can be bothered at the time answers the question.
I know you are in Liverpool but where are the other Eds based. Thanks mate.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - we all have a live feed golds, some do just their own club, while others like myself have access to various sites, i tend to concentrate on my own club everton, and arsenal as i respect the club and enjoy the banter with the posters. some i tend to swerve, like celtic and rangers who are very political and nasty, and newcastle and sunderland who vent their hate towards each other in their posts, arsenal is a busy site, and your own eds dont seem to have the time to answer as often as they would wish, so when i have time i step in, as when i was a poster i found it frustrating when i waited hours for a reply, thats how i got this gig by complaining about the wait..a couple of the top guys live in dubai, and ED02 lives wherever he damn well wants :), most of the others live in or around the city of their clubs, i hope that helps mate..clear as mud :)

Hey Eds, are we any chance of signing Jackson Martinez? With Wenger ruling out Balotelli, he's the only other quality option in our price range. Surely, if we made a concrete offer, he'd want us over Valencia, CL football and all that.

Luis Suarez has been banned from all football activity for four months and will be loaned to Stoke for that period.

Does anyone think that the Arsenal board may be thinking that last season when they broke the mold and tested the water in paying £42 million for Ozil they probably were expecting a lot more for their money. So they may be thinking for that type of money we may aswell carry on in the way we have as its served us well up to now.
Also adding to the fact that Joel Campbell has been putting on a decent display so far in the World Cup this has been the decider as to whether Arsenal need to buy another striker coupled with the another fact that Giroud has been playing well too.
I wouldn't mind guessing that this has been going through their minds.
Im feeling another Groundhog Day coming on.
Thoughts on this?

Damn GB I thought the same just didn't want to say it and spoil the party.

AW is one shrewd mofo and let's face it he won't pay more then he has to for anyone.

I for one could see in his interviews about the Oz last season when he was stateing how great a player he was that he wasnt so happy about how Oz had settled in.

I do however hope that its just 1st year settling in and that Oz makes a great impact this year. TBH though when Rambo was'nt playing Ozil looked lost.

I think Ozil needs a great mid next to him to bring the best out of his sublime passes tbh and Rambo and him link up brilliantly.

Sorry for going off topic there lol

{Ed025's Note - i think you are right gav, players of ozil,s quality want to win things and want top players around them, i think he sulked a bit at times last season, and im sure he will not be a happy bunny if some top players are not brought in..

Goldboy why so positive? Lol

I don't think the board will have felt "burnt" by spending that amount on one player.
It's pretty rare that a player from outside england/ the premier league comes in and sets the world alight in their first season for the entire campaign.
It's fairly clear to me that Ozil is a step up from what we have had in our team for a long time. But he does need help from a better quality of player. A striker who's as quick of mind as Ozil. No point having a creator of goals when you havnt got the finisher.
You could say that if we don't follow up with some equal quality signings then what was the point of signing Ozil? Would wreak of panic! What was the point of leaving Highbury? Moving to the Emirates was the whole reason to create enough financial power to compete fully in all competitions especially league and champions league. And now the repayments have very little impact on the years finances, we don't have to sell players to service the debt, there are no excuses for the reinforcements that are needed.

One of the major tabloids has just reported,

' Italy striker Mario Balotelli will not be returning to the Premier League with Arsenal after AC Milan Chief Executive Adriano Galliani told AC Milan's website that the 23 year old will remain with the club'.

Make of it what you will.

Ruud Gullit asked Arsene the question when they were guests on a BEin sports show and his comments to Arsene around that plus the way Arsene answered make me pretty certain that Balotelli won't be wearing an Arsenal shirt. Ever.

Gullit said to Arsene that he could never see him buying him as he wasn't a team player, that's when Arsene said it was all made up by the press.
