I for one hope vermaelen stays. If he does he will start against City in the Com Shield and against Palace.
With 2 good performances and a lack of match fitness with Mertersacker he would surly play against Everton too. Would Mertesacker walk straight back in?

Not too Rocky, but it's a nice problem for Wenger to solve.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think he (BFG) would but would be great to see Tommy V get his swagger back and become a valuable part of the rotation. My preference would be to see him stay - quality chap!

Agree0 Disagree0

The irritating fact is that in the Charity Shield & against Crystal Palace, we will be without Mertesacker and possibly Vermaelen, if he leaves. We will have Koscielny to play, but no experienced recognised Centre Back to play alongside him, unless we make a signing. I would make a guess that if Vermaelen goes, we will make a signing, who will have little time to bed in, unless of course we keep Vermaelen until Mertesacker returns.

I think at this point anyone but Kheidera would be a surprise. Be nice to get him but would still go to war with Arteta/Flamini. Of course may need someone to replace Tommy V, but that can be done.

Can't wait to see the ARS feared once again!

This transfer window is amazing, do any of the eds know if we've struck oil?

If we get a DM in by next week surely anything on top of that would be a bonus to what anyone could have dreamt of? i'm a serial-moaner and with AFC and the weather the way they are, i'm having to complain about fuel prices & GM foods at the moment!

Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez set for Tottenham

Reports that are coming out.

Would be surprised about that, a good snatch and grab from spurs if believed

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The manager connection would give them an advantage I guess plus only a tiny step up if they doubt their own ability, if spyder rates himself he will want to play with the best so naturally choose us, simples

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2014 20:56:54
Have they got enough money to buy them both? By all accounts they want £27 million for Schneiderlin.

I will say It's unusual for players of their quality to take a step down to a smaller club, must be offering big wages I guess. ;-)

It really will be Saint Totterings day when it happens.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2014 20:58:04
Absolutely gutted if Spyder joins spurs.
I think he is our missing piece to the jigsaw.

Come on Arsene, Southampton want Gnabry on loan, use Serge as a sweetener.

We need a DM.
No Khedira, Carvalho, Pogba, Schneiderlin, Bender.
We are missing out on the player we really need.

Joey Barton anybody?

Southampton fans must be destroyed by this transfer window

Agree0 Disagree0

Some are D but strangely a lot seem very accepting that the club needs to secure its future financially by buying small selling big for now, I had a look at their page and many remember all to well being close to going out of business so are ok with things. Fair play to them, but of course others are distraught and understandably so

This has been touched on before but with this transfer window now on 66m spent I wondered if there is any certain answer on this. Now I know ed002 you don't like to talk bout money. But these previous years arsene has been tight was that all because there simply wasn't money to spend with the stadium costs. It explains a lot like the amount of stars we let go year after year. Or is it simply arsene has decided to change his ways and spend. Appreciate if anyone can shed light on it. Thanks guys!

Wenger is a bad loser, there is no way he would be happy competing then suddenly nit competing and getting crap off fans/ pundits and press without a good reason.

He had financial constraints but maintained his and the clubs dignity by getting on with business in a professional manner while laying further foundation for our great club

We owe this guy a lot. He is not bigger than the club but definitely responsible for making us a bigger and better club.

Hats off to Wenger AND the board

Agree0 Disagree0

I think in the early years after the stadium move it was defo a lack of cash to spend on players but in the last maybe 2-3 years more money has been available than what has been spent on squad investment and I really believe wenger doesn't want to bow out in 3 years time a loser so is beginning to change in terms of spend the really big question is will he change in terms of running the same players into the ground causing so many injuries and also will our tactics change so we ain't so predictable when it comes to playing our top 4-6 rivals time will tell ay

Southampton will only play five a side friendlies for the remainder of the preseason.

They'll reduce their wage bills while increasing their support.

So chambers is a done deal, really feel sad for Jenko I just hope wherever he goes its a loan, we have a very few people who are true gunners by blood wilshire, and jenko to name just a few. Really hope its just a loan, loved the celeberation on his first goal in the PL for arsenal.

Hi Ed can you shed any light on if a actual official offer has gone in for Douglas Costa from arsenal? I really hope not as this guy at best has only scored 7 goals in any season in not a very good league. would seem a really poor bit of business, for the money being quoted. Thanks in advance,

28 Jul 2014 16:38:04
Hi guys!

So now we have 4 new players. I can't really see Wenger buying 6 new players. So a DM or striker? What do you see as most important and what do you think Wenger will go after?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think well definately sign a centre mid and it will be someone "big" - Khedira or Carvalho.

Also think we will sign a centre half.

And I can see a deadline day loan move for Salomon Kalou aswell

Agree0 Disagree0

First post long time reader good work to all the EDs! But I truly believe it's a DM now and that will be it Sanchez will be our CF being rotated with Walcott and giroud

Agree0 Disagree0

Both a DM and Striker would be nice, But I have feeling now that Wengers spending is done as he never likes to bring in too many players in one go.

If I had to choose between a DM and Striker I Still would like another up Top central ortodox Striker to compete with Giroud, as we are still reliant on him to give that physcial presence and to hold the ball up. If we lose him he have Knowone to fill in that role really.

Flamini although not top class can do a decent job and we have Arteta to fill in and Wilshire aswell if need be, I think we can make do in this area for another year anyway.

Agree0 Disagree0

I hope we don't sign Kalou 😒

Chambers is a done deal at £16m according to BBC website.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

28 Jul 2014 16:18:30
We should loan jenkinson not sell him I think he needs a run of games I still beleive he has a future if given a chance

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think you're absolutely right Imired and there still could be a future for him. Chambers will cover CB and CDM as well as RB and may become a long-term fixture in one of those positions instead. Jenks could still eventually take over from Debuchy if Chambers stakes a claim in the middle. A seson-long loan would give us a good picture of Jenks' real level.

Agree0 Disagree0

Chambers was brought in beacasue he is versitle more than anything and I see him eventually competing for a regular CB birth. Jenkinson still having a future as our RB competing with Dubuchy in the meantime.

With the uncertainty over TV5 I think we can't relly afford to loan any defenders out at present as with Chambers covering in as CB we need Jenkinson to cover at RB in case of inury to Debuchy.

Agree0 Disagree0

With the uncertainty over TV5 at present for me we need to keep all our defenders here because if TV5 does go, Chambers will then be our back up 3rd CB. We will then need Jenkinson to back up Debuchy still at RB and be the 4th CB if need be, Not sure if Djouro is coming back, I suspect he will not want to?.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2014 16:18:04
Is it just me or is rather amusing that top four clubs are signing players from 8th placed Southampton.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Incredible testimony to their academy. You wonder how much they put into developing players, because they have effectively made around £70m from players who cost nothing this summer. I think it's a shame for them that all their good work may leave them in a tenuous position. We know a bit of the pain with RVP, Fab, Na$ri etc but we've always still had a half-decent team afterwards!

Agree0 Disagree0

We signed Ox and Theo when they weren't even in the same league. Difference is that we are signing potential. But Loveren, Lallana and Lambert will not get any better

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2014 16:10:29
With Liverpool pulling out of the Remy deal, Balotelli supposedly being cheaper and Bony still available any chance in Arsenal going for any of these 3 or is there still interest for another forward elsewhere?

28 Jul 2014 13:39:03
Apparently during the Chambers deal there were discussions/commitments that we may loan young players the other way.

Given the quality of their academy I think this could suit both sides. Feel sorry for Southampton and wouldn't mind Gnarby/Jenko/Zelalem getting some experience and helping them out.

Wenger, stop being the nice guy. add clauses in loan which mean they can't play against arsenal!

Tv5 is on his last yr of his contract wid us. I feel we should sell him n get a replacement than loose him fr ntng next season. To barca for a smaller fee than watevr utd is offering because I can't stand d thought of another Arsenal captain playin for man utd! Hinteregger or martins Indi wuld b ideal replacements fr me. Dey can cover fr lb as both Gibbs n monreal r injury prone.

Banbury I agree with you! Whatever next lol

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2014 11:34:34
Interesting interview by Wenger on Callum Chambers. By the sounds of it he will be our 4th choice CB this season. I reckon both Jenkinson and Vermaelen will stay. And Chambers will become 3rd choice next season when Vermaelen leaves next season. Wenger did say Jenkinson will fight Debuchy for RB this season. Looks like we will have some good depth this season. 2 more signings and we will have our most complete team in years.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It's always funny when two people in a short amount of time come to complete opposite conclusions on the same subject! As in you and noodles.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think he'll do what Sagna did last year. Play at RB but can easily cover CB if needed.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2014 11:25:28
Sounds like Jenkinson is being sold, which doesn't worry me, as he hasn't progressed & doesn't have what it takes to play for a top four club. So we now appear to have two new right backs in Debauchy & Chambers, which is at least as good as last seasons pair. We have two left backs & 3 centre backs, one of whom may depart. So defensively we need to sign one or two CB's, if Vermaelen leaves, unless a young player is promoted to the first team. Keeper-wise we are sorted. A defensive midfield player may be a possibility, hopefully Schneiderlin.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Wenger's comments indicate that Chambers can cover CB as well, so with him we have 4 by that reckoning. The idea seems to be that he'll cover RB and CB, perhaps CDM as well sometimes, and be groomed as a long-term starter in one of those positions. Similar to what Utd have been doing with Smalling and Jones (although I hope it works better for us!). He is still 19 though, so if Vermaelen leaves we'll definitely need a relatively experienced and good quality CB aswell. personally, although I doubt he will, I'm really hoping Vermaelen stays - I don't think we could have a much better back-up. If so we may already have enough with Chambers.

Agree0 Disagree0

In defense of Smalling and Jones, they have been playing for a very mediocre team.

Agree0 Disagree0

Smalling and Jones are mediocre

Thanks Eds

28 Jul 2014 08:19:29
Hi Ed's Are Arsenal still in the market for a DM? With the news of jack playing in that position I'm not too sure if that's all talk! And if we don't sign one before the season starts, I got a little feeling we will sign kehdira on deadline day!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Arsenal are but will not buy for the sake of it.}

The poll result has made me laugh.
There must be some seriously stupid people on this site for over half of them to think smoking won't effect a footballers performance.

Even casual smoking puts toxins on your blood stream. It makes your blood thicker, making your heart have to work harder to pump blood around the body. It also narrows your arteries again reducing blood flow. Smoke entering your lungs damages them making you susceptible to coughs, wheezing and colds. These are noticeable short term effects of casual smoking - not long term effects.
That's science and it's not open to debate. It's fact

Believable0 Unbelievable0

When I played football, at half time the players that didn't smoke were fine, whilst those that smoked were breathless. Smoking is a stupid habit and one a professional footballer shouldn't do.

So, the latest reports on Khedira lowering his wage demands sound promising. If true, it sounds like a bloke keen to play for the Gunners, as he could probably score those higher wages at a Monaco or a Chelsea. Those are the sort of blokes I like to see signed by us. He may be a bit older (27) and he may not be a true DM, but if he truly wants to be a gunner, I'll be very happy!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He seems to want to come to us and others seem to have taken a step back so could yet be outback mate, wouldn't be exactly gutted if he came to us :-)

Assuming we sign Chambers, as cover for the CB position and keep Jenkinson as cover at RB, we still require a defensive midfield player. Wenger has stated that we won't be signing a forward, presumably as we have Giroud, Sanogo, Campbell, Walcott & Sanchez, who can all play attacking roles, as well as Podolski.

Assuming the above happens who would you sell? My own thoughts are: Djourou, Flamini, Arteta, Coquelin, Miyaichi & Rosicky.

Although, I believe the following may happen: Vermaelen, Cazorla, Podolski, Arteta or Flamini, Djourou, Coquelin & Miyaichi. If Vermaelen goes, then a replacement should be brought in. I believe Wenger may also consider loan deals for Jenkinson & Gnabry.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Wouldn't sell arteta, flamini, rosicky, rosicky injects pace, arteta and flamini can do a job(wouldnt want them 1st choice) and they are influential in the dressing room

I also understand the Anfield peanut seller is retiring.
Local reports say the peanut seller at Southampton is packing his bag's and heading up the M62 Monday morning.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No the Liverpool peanut seller is staying on now Dags, it seems his replacement wasn't up to the job due to medical reasons.
