Seen very mixed posts recently about monreal. I thought he was outstanding last season but this season has really seemed a liability at times. With Gibbs as a unreliable back up I really feel we should strengthen that area in January/ summer time. What does everyone else think?

I said it last season, neither of our LB's inspire me and we need replacements. In their defence we also need our wide players to assist when defending.

Monreal misses Sanchez at Lw supporting him defensively. Think Iwobi and Ox don't do the same job. Also think teams target him to try win pens and run at him as he's the weak link in our otherwise solid defence, it makes him look more exposed and weaker than he actually is. I still think he's a very good defender and hasn't lost his ability overnight. Still better than most in the prem.

Very true Detroit. I don't think he has lost it overnight. TBH I was wondering if he just had that much of a good season it didn't click it might be because of the LW position. Great point.

Must win match at the weekend. Interesting to see who we play at RB, as I presume Jenkinson wasn't injured he must have been dropped. Since he has returned to the first team he has done nothing to convince me that he has the necessary quality to cover for Bellerin at RB. I have a hunch that we might play Gabriel again. The keeper and the rest of the defence picks itself. I would to see us continue with the Xhaka-Elneny partnership, which looked solid, but I have a feeling Coquelin will return in place of Elneny. Wide right I see Ramsey and wide left possibly Iwobi. Ozil retains his place and Sanchez up front.

I know you're a big fan of rotation RG mate but all this chopping and changing isn't going to get us firing on all cylinders anytime soon, Monreal is struggling without Sanchez ahead of him admittedly but given him a different partner each week is hardly likely to fix the problem surely stability and developing an understanding with one player would be a better tactic.
Elneny and Xhaka combination in my opinion are a weak naive cmf paring, Jenks isn't Belerin by a long way but he did pretty well for two seasons at West Ham and is probably as good as cover as most teams could expect to have, give the lad a chance while Belerins injured that's what's he's paid for.
I don't see all this taking in turns Saturday morning swapshop rotation leading to a competitive competing Arsenal I think we will just end up like always with a cosy club mentality where we revert back to top 4 type,
League cup Fa cup play who ever you want but premier league and champions league always play your best available 11 if you want to be the best you can be.

We miss a left-sided winger at times who can cross the ball, not sure if Perez can do that.

Good post Gunner62. However, I stand by my comment in respect of Jenkinson, he simply isn't good enough and I doubt he ever will be. I agree fully that Monreal or Gibbs need better cover ahead of them when Sanchez isn't playing on the left. It is one of my criticisms that our wide attacking midfield players don't cover their full backs well enough, often leaving them exposed one on one. SAF used rotation amazingly and he once went over 60 matches without playing the same starting eleven twice in a row. He had a core of undroppable players and rotated around them. So at Arsenal, we have Cech, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Ozil and Sanchez. The rest can be rotated without weakening the team and allowing players time to recuperate and avoid injury and sub-par performances as a result of fatigue. Yes, the domestic cups can be used to play squad players, but these trophies are well worth winning, so one has to take care.

Football is forever changing RG mate and worked for Fergie isn't the same recipe used by the two most recent champions of the premier league, I think most people would agree our most effective cmf pairing are Caz and Le Coq so although we don't have Caz available at the moment I see little point in dropping the other half of that double act to accommodate giving Xhaka and Elneny some game time, keeping all happy won't lead us to another title mate we need hungry players looking to win or retain a place in the team not ones who are simply waiting their turn if we're to have any chance of that mate.

Gunner 62 - Yes, Leicester won last year, but they didn't play in Europe and they were knocked out of the domestic cups early on, so they played far fewer matches than we will this season. The season before Chelsea won it, but they had a large squad which they rotated, in fact only 5 players played over 30 PL matches; Ivanovic, Fabregas, Matic, Hazard and Cahill, the strong core that I mentioned in my post. Of course it would make sense to play the best eleven every match, but not when a team such as ours is playing CL matches midweek, which lead to fatigue and injury. Hence why Chelsea in 2014-15 and Man U under SAF had quality squads that they rotated. Look at this season, Chelsea and Liverpool that are not in the CL are leading the PL race. Interestingly after a CL matches all four of this seasons PL teams have only won 2 out of the 5 matches they played after playing midweek in the CL.

gunner62 - in respect of the DM pairing, Cazorla as you say is not available and in any event I prefer him to play further forward to avoid injury, this I have discussed with an ED and we differ, although I must reiterate that the proof of the pudding is in the eating and Cazorla has been injured, bar a couple of matches since he was badly fouled in a challenge whilst playing in a DM against Norwich last season and aggravated the . We then have a choice of three players to rotate. However, my favourite pairing would still be Elneny and Xhaka, who have benefits that Coquelin doesn't have; Elneny has high energy and makes vertical runs diving forward. Whereas, Xhaka possesses a greater range of passing than Coquelin and has will add more goals with his shooting prowess. The good thing is that after many seasons of not having any DM's, we now have 3, plus Cazorla.
