On sterling rejecting the contract, I disagree that this is an example of the epitome of youngsters caring only for money.

I don't see why it's bad for a player to say that they want to win more trophies and gain more plaudits when they can only do that at a bigger club. Moving to a club that are consistently qualifying for the champions league just makes logical career sense. Liverpool can't offer that to him at this present time.

Why should you have to show loyalty to a club you don't support as well. Obviously I would love arsenal players to be loyal and stay at the club, but you can't force someone to love a club.

I just think there are so many reasons for a player not to want to sign a contract other than just money. Stop judging him right now when you don't know exactly what his intentions are.

You can't draw definite conclusions before you know all the facts...

Fair comments Henry.

I did stress in the post that he turned down the offer for "whatever reason", so it wasn't necessarily money related.

Sterling himself stressed it wasn't the financial side that he is hesitating over, but the " trophy" aspect.

But again, it typifies a lot of youngsters these days.
I'm all for players joining clubs to win trophies and ply your trade in the biggest arena's, against the biggest teams in the biggest competitions, but again, it goes to show these young players want it all and they want it NOW.
Hypothetically, shouldn't a player like Sterling, who Liverpool picked up from QPR reserves, learn his trade at a club like Liverpool, show them a bit of loyalty for their investment and for turning him into a regular first team player, not to mention an England International, before picking up more money to sit on Man City or Real Madrid's bench?

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 22:03:16
As ed said sterling needs to be better represented.

Saying that for 50 mill would you rather have Marco reus, sterling or dybala? Not certain of the fee but I'm guessing they would all cost around the same price range. One is a bona-fide superstar with a recent injury history and the others are potential. I know who I'd have.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You need the fantasy football or complete bollocks pages for these posts.}

02 Apr 2015 22:27:18
Yeah fair enough dags, I agree he shouldn't be leaving Liverpool if there is a large likeliness he won't get consistent first team football. And yes he shouldn't rush himself and think about what Liverpool has done for him, and that he is still very young.

But then at the same time he may never have the same hype around him as he does now, so he might need to capitalise on interest in him that might not be there later on. I agree he shouldn't rush himself and over pool deserve some repentance but again I think there are more important factors I prioritise than loyalty for sterling.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - unfortunately henry the good ship loyalty sailed a long time ago mate...and is unlikely to be ever seen again..

02 Apr 2015 22:37:28
The sooner his contract is sorted the better, sterling talk seems to be taking over this page.

Its a non starter

Bring the hate, don't care

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im with you 1404..

02 Apr 2015 20:27:38
I think you are comparing Sterling of now to Walcott of now.

Theo has been out for 12 months and has only recently returned.

Sterling, last season was very good, but I would also look like a world beater if I had an in form Suarez and Sturridge in front of me.

This season, he has been good/average, but certainly not the world class player people make him out to be.

In a few years time, yes he will probably be better than Theo.

At present? Nope.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 21:47:31
Yeah he's better than walcott, but if he played for us he wouldn't be one of the 4/5 first choice attackers

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - really saint?..

02 Apr 2015 22:25:11
Ozil, giroud, cazorla, sanchez, Chambo, then I'd say sterling is the level down from that. He's a glorified version of gervinho who everyone happens to think is brilliant because he's english.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - sanchez i agree with saint...the others not so much..and chambo your having a giraffe mate..

02 Apr 2015 22:54:53
Im with Saint ed i'm afraid give me Cazorla Ozil Sanchez or Chambers and day of the week. How many goals did Sterling score when liverpool were having there bad run or assisted in none or very few

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - am i missing something here?...chambers has been mentioned twice now in the same breath as stirling!, come on guys keep it real, even santi and mesut have hardly pulled up any trees this season, raheem is a talent MB, i wish he was,nt but he is mate, he would get in all the top sides in the EPL even chelsea, where he would replace oscar..

02 Apr 2015 23:19:16
Sorry not Chambo, the ox rather

03 Apr 2015 16:01:49
Eds talks a lot of sense. Small man crush on the guy

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - well he is only a small man diarby.. :)

02 Apr 2015 12:38:49
The more I think about it Sanchez is a lot like Rooney. Can be a formidable player, especially in an environment like the Prem. Rooney is better suited to no. 9 than Sanchez and has a worse disciplinary record, but Sanchez really gets stuck in to win the ball, shows a lot of self-belief and an incredible desire to win games. They're both pretty selfish with the ball in the final third too.
Biggest concern is that, based on his recent form (i.e. dip in form), Sanchez is a lot like Rooney because he thrives when the rest of the team plays poorly but has a quieter run when the team soars. Generally been the case for Rooney except when he played alongside Ronaldo. Let's hope Alexis breaks that starting this weekend and proves he can add to the fine tally of goals once again - just alongside an in-form front line...

Believable2 Unbelievable0

02 Apr 2015 13:10:02
To be fair Sanchez carried us in 2014 without him we would still be hoping to hoping to get into the top 4 by May, his form has dipped by his own very high standards but other's would love his current form to be theirs.
His work rate and passion have raised everyone's expectations of each other but most importantly he's raised Arsene's expectations of the whole squad.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 13:35:27
Otherwise known as burnout.

Wenger wanted to rest him, but didn't because Sanchez "wanted to play".

Sorry Arsene, you are the manager and you know how gruelling the English prem is.

If you wanted/needed to rest him, you should have, despite the players protestations and desire.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 15:07:38
I said this many weeks ago Dags and got shot down, why did Wenger put him on at Brighton? he has dipped in form since then

Agree1 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 16:22:42
Yep, I remember Bambam.

The guy needed a rest and that was the perfect time.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 16:46:02
But people said rest him against Place too where we won by an odd goal and if we'd have dropped points without him those same people would have gone mental.
Its always difficult especially when fans like in the Monaco at home are too over confident before the game saying rest this that or the other player then slaughter the manager after the game, imagine how many Monaco would have beaten weak Arsenal side by?
How many consecutive games did lampard play for Chavs? I think he holds the record, i think :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 12:15:41
Now must not be a good time to be Calum Chambers... With Debuchy and Arteta coming back, he will be third choice CB, 4th choice CB and 4th choice DMF.

Gotta feel for the lad

Believable1 Unbelievable0

02 Apr 2015 13:02:43
Most 19 year olds don't play for arsenal on 35k a week, not much sympathy from me

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 13:27:15
I see him as DMF / back up CB if he takes his chances and develops. Unless he loses his addiction to a card a game from poor positioning he's not a natural defender. But I do think he'll come through. Maybe he'll become our Carrick; Chambers reminds me a lot of Carrick from his West Ham days - player Wenger always wanted. Reckon he'll move up a slot from what you've listed in the centre of the pitch next year.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 13:37:09
He's young and still learning.

He may not be a first team regular, but will get plenty of minutes over the long course of a season.

And, still get paid.

Agree1 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 15:08:27
why have you got to feel for him???

Don't get that comment...............sorry

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 16:40:24
BG and Saint, obviously not from a financial point of view, at 35k p/w he is doing very well on that front :P... but rather from a footballing point of view. At this rate, he is not going to get much football, even in the Capitol one cup. He's a boy who I think has a future ahead of him, but I feel he was the right buy at the wrong time, and am worried about his playing opportunities in future... unless he goes on loan. Liverpool definitely need a CB lol

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 12:14:15
Debuchy or Bellerini? That is the question...

Believable0 Unbelievable0

02 Apr 2015 13:03:39
In the team? Debuchy. If I had to choose to have one at my club? Bellerin, no question about it

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 13:34:11
Why not both? 😀. Horses for courses. It's a Good question to have. I don't think we've seen enough of debuchy in an Arsenal team to know the answer yet. Need to see a run of games to see his consistency and how he fits.

Will be Bellerin on Saturday. The lad's good, and has pace to recover when he makes a mistake. His attacking play on the ball is already about the best I've seen from any Arsenal full back for a decade. He's been excellent on set plays inside our box too, something I've noticed. At this rate he'll be a world beater in a couple of years. (Too soon? LOL! )

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 13:38:04
Debuchy.

He is the complete right back and a role model for Bellerin.

Agree3 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 11:41:52
The Sterling argument...

To me he looks like he will be gone, doesn't look like he will sign the contract. Liverpool fans might feel dissapointed, but in reality he showed no loyalty towards QPR when he signed for Liverpool so why should he show loyalty towards Liverpool.

Liverpool will make a substantial profit on him for a player that cost very little and QPR won't get anything.

With the amount of money in football now there is no such thing as loyalty. Even Fabreags who did everything he can to join Barcelona ended up following Chelsea millions. He took a pay cut, gave up on loyalty bonus at Arsenal, but when Barca didn't want to give him a contract he thought he deserved it didn't take much to leave?

Sterling at Arsenal?

I like Sterling, fantastic ability. Pace creativity and directness. At 20 years old has the potential to be up there at the best. Perfect signing for Arsenal?

My opinion no, we have Sanchez and the Ox to play that role. Sanchez one of the best in the league and Ox keeps on improving. Hopefully next season he can stay injury free and show the world his ability.

Love him or hate him Welbeck is a important player, every team needs players that will do a job. Wont bang in 20 goals but will give enough work rate and balance that it allows the likes of Ozil, Cazorla and Sanchez bit more freedom and more of a insurance with Welbeck in the team.

Walcott? well he can't dribble, can't pass, easy to mark, no work rate, when he's poor he's really poor. But when Arsenal are playing well he's the most important player on the pitch. The ability to get in behind, ability to stretch games, always give attacking players a option. Theo or Sterling? Theo for me, its important to have variety in attack and not be so one dimensional.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - QPR will get a %age of the transfer fee.}

02 Apr 2015 12:16:05
Good post that Noodles, I agree with just about everything you've written. Sterling is a great player and although I may change my mind in the near future - I don't think we need him unless Theo leaves (and I wouldn't be bending over backwards if Theo wants to play games with his contract negotiations).

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 11:37:05
If reports are to be believed, Sterling has turned down £100,000 per week to stay at Liverpool. (For whatever reason).

What is happening/has happened to football?

He is just a kid, a mere teenager a few months ago, but his club, Liverpool, has to offer him huge amounts of money, just to keep him.

I'm not just talking about Sterling, but all young players in general.

Has football become just a globally marketable monstrosity, awash with money and corruption, where players have more sports cars than first team appearances?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

02 Apr 2015 12:19:37
To answer your question, yes.

Also, I'm a bit offended by your use of the term 'a mere teenager'. :P We're not all bad

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 12:56:56
Personally I feel all footballers start off by wanting the glory of the game but many soon become engrossed in what the game can do for them opposed to what they once believed they could do for the game.
Theo as a kid would have dreamed of scoring the winning goal in a cup final and world cup final but for me I think more bigger and better houses cars occupy his mind more than glory.
Ranaldo isn't exactly slow in coming forward in the money stakes that's for sure but he has never lost his passion for the game it self.
I very much question Theo's desire to be all he can be on the pitch but don't for a minute question his desire to have all he cab have in the bank.
At this moment in time I think Stirling has much more in Common with Ranaldo than Theo

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 13:19:58
it may not be about the money, what if he joins another team like city, psg, madrid, barcelona and takes a lesser wage? would it then be said he moved for the money?

the thing is at 20, liverpool is his best bet to get regular game time and improve as a player, so if he said he wants to be the best he can be, that is where he should stay.

the fact of life is money is always the first question, does not matter if you are a nice guy or not. The current deal of 100K is what he should sign, but perhaps his agent feels he can get a better deal, and knowing football is a short career where a single injury can derail it, perhaps he is looking for the most he can get.

if i was him or he was my son, i'm 30 btw, not 75, i would say to stick with liverpool and in a few years if they can't do better or draw big players leave and get the deal you want.

would i want him at arsenal? YES.

will he be affordable? NO he will be crazy expensive for a 20 year old. besides i do not see liverpool as a team who would sell to a direct rival.

If liverpool want walcott in any deal they would have to make a compromise for sterling.

im going to say that the team he ends up with is chelsea. they will sell willian and oscar and the vast amount of loanees they have and have sufficient funds to pay him a good wage and a possible 50+ mill transfer fee. I can see hazard and sterling working well behind costa.

beyond all that i think he wants assurance that he can play as a striker, and possibly have some sort of a get out clause, and that's probably the contract hold up (im assuming as that is what i would ask for as a 20 year old kid with massive potential, who believe a bit too much in his own hype)

Just saw an article that stated that all our players are back in training and Welbeck could be fit to play against Liverpool. This must be the first time in years that we have no injuries, although some are not yet match fit.
Perhaps, the fitness coach, Shad Forsythe, brought in last summer, has started to work his magic.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

02 Apr 2015 11:08:17
This always happens. All our players always gets injured during the first half of the season and they always come back around March.

One of the reason why we always have such a strong end to seasons and always guaranteed 4th.

Maybe they get worked too hard during pre season?

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 11:20:43
Now that he has finished on Strictly Dancing, he has been able to concentrate on doing his job properly, which is getting the players fit.

Oh, wait.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 11:23:32
Robbie, if we stay injury free for the rest of the season I will share your optimism lol.

Also, if all players are fit, where the heck is Gnabry these days?

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 11:26:26
It think it was almost the opposite last season noodles mate, great start poor finish, in fact from Jan to Dec 2013 we were the best side in the country by some distance and Jan to Dec 2014 we were a long way from being that despite winning the fa cup and
2015 we have been excellent again.

Robbie it will be interesting if everyone is fit and available on Saturday to see what Arsene actually considers his best 11?

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 12:21:02
Good point that G62 but he won't necessarily put out his idea of the best 11, just the best 11 under current circumstances. For example, I know he's spoken about giving Sanchez a rest when we have players back from injury.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 12:30:33
PFG,

Gnabry has been back playing for a while, featured for the U21's and came on for the German U21 team the other day against England.

It seems Wenger is using the squad depth to ease players back in, more competition for him to get a starting spot too.

I read that Monreal is being offered an improved contract and wondered what fellow gooners think of this news....

My own opinion is that is has many positive attributes, but lacks the explosive pace necessary to play at full-back for a top Premier League team.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - squad player for me robbie..

02 Apr 2015 08:06:49
Well deserved.

His time as a CB seems to have really helped him so that he is very effective against the big strong teams from the LB now too. Him a Gibbs are great tandem.

Agree0 Disagree1

02 Apr 2015 08:14:28
Top player for me as this season has shown, probably our best defender this season. Nice to have a full back who defends first.Gibbs is becoming the squad player.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 09:24:40
gibbs for me is not a left back, more a winger. Monreal is the better defender and in such a position defense is no1.

the guy who impresses me is obviously hector bellerin, he can run the field like jordi alba, and while he is not that great at defending, he does do well, big test for him against liverpool this sat.

im wondering about luis gaya the LB from valencia do we have actual interest in him, or does madrid have a more suitable plan for him?

Agree0 Disagree1

02 Apr 2015 09:35:05
Gibbs is not half the defender that Nacho is

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 09:51:23
I like Gibbs, I know he isn't worldclass but if you play him with three defensive defenders (ie sagna or debuchy at right back) he can have that bit of extra freedom going forward and he starts to look like a really good player

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 10:32:39
Gibbs is an attacking MF/winger who trys to be the LB he's asked to be because he's a very good professional but he just doesn't have the natural instinct or mentality to be a very good defender.
Could Belerin or Jenks be a right footed LB? There's been a few decent ones over the years

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 10:38:25
I always feel sorry for Gibbs, who started out as a left sided midfield player, before Wenger converted him into a left back, where I have never felt he is comfortable with the defensive side of his game.

Agree1 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 11:19:02
For me, our best defenders have always been Dixon, Winterburn and Sagna.

They got forward when possible, without neglecting their defensive duties.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 11:26:26
Nah stop that, he's surrounded by some of the best defensive coaches in the world. He knows how to defend, he lacks the discipline needed to play the other side from a player like Bellerin.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Apr 2015 15:54:09
Bellerin is going to be awesome but at this point he cannot pass like Chambers let alone Monreal.

No love for Acole there Dags as a defender getting forward, and I don't blame you. Had a soft spot for Silvinho even if he didn't last long.

I fail to understand all the fuss with Sterling.
He has two years on his deal and has sensibly postponed extension negotiations until the end of the season. The run in for Liverpool is crucial, as they are currently out of the top four, have a tricky run in, a quarter-final FA Cup replay away to Blackburn, without Gerrard & Skrtel, as well as possibly missing injured players, such as Sturridge.
If Liverpool were to lose on Saturday, a top four finish will prove extremely difficult with 7 matches remaining.

i think sterling has been overhyped a bit much, yes he has great potential, but 50 mill for potential is a bit crazy. take 20 mill off and maybe someone will bite.

he has no choice but to sign for liverpool, if he does not they will keep him another year, and sell him a year later.

3 months ago Le Coq was thinking about life beyond Arsenal and must have been wondering where he would end up next season with championship football looking his best option.
Now he's absolutely staring in the premier league and totally earned his new contract.
Theo could do worse than spend a bit of quality time with Le Coq or they could very easily be ships that pass in the season and their careers heading in completely opposite directions from here on in

I was looking at photos from the recent U21 game which featured Debuchy, Wilshere, Arteta and Diaby and stood watching on the touch line was a certain Francis Coquelin.

I guess he could have been anywhere as he wasn't playing but the guy obviously has a lot about him and wants to constantly learn whatever way he can, I think if we bring in another DM that Coquelin will simply thrive on the competition.

He like you say has only had 3 months of being a first choice starter and has done himself and us no harm with his displays and will be learning every game.

At worst an extremely valuable member of our squad but potentially much more.

If Theo leaves he'll earn a bigger deal though and be fine. Le coq would of just gone to an average team

Theo has to run out of pace sometime, he's not getting younger, and it maybe time to cash in on him. without pace he will need to use his IQ and i'm not quite sure he has proven to make the right choices many times in advanced positions.

I think the thing Le coq Ox Aaron and also Danny have in abundance is a real hunger to be the best they can possibly be even Ozil with his £42m price tag has shown a real passion and desire to improve himself and his game.
I'm not sure Theo has that any more, I'm not saying he doesn't care or want to be successful I'm just not sure he actually truly accepts how good he's not and how far he is from being remembered as anything other than the kid who went to the world cup and didn't ever quite make the grade.
