Good performance but I'd like another cb to start alongside kossielny I think mertesacker will cost us more points than he will save us giroud should of scored Walcott can not play upfront against the big teams. I would like javi Martinez as he has fallen out of favour at Munich along with a striker

Blimey Ed025,

Just seen it was Duncan disorderly's testimonial.

Thought they were a thing of the past?

Rooney was given a decent reception by the blue faithful...nice to see.

{Ed025's Note - the after party should be good as well dags...there will probably be a big fight and all end up in bed with an old granny.. :)

Crikey Ed,

All that's missing is Joey Barton.

I like joey Barton not for football ability for 10/10 in the toolometer stakes. Probably in a massive minority.

Evening all! Great result tonight and an important win for us to at least show we can beat Chelsea

JM needs to watch the match back as we had two clear cut one on ones while defending a lead and in the blazing sun. Did not see us park a bus but just showed a little more experience and composure

I believe Cech is having an impact on the back four and set pieces as he is getting them more organised and clearing space for him to goal keep. Still early days....

I agree with the BT guys ( not Owen who is a K!@8) that Theo lacks something up front as he cannot hold the ball up at all while Giroud can but lacks pace & killer instinct to help us win the league. To win it - there can be no compromise up front in front of goal & we need to be better. I love Giroud & Theo - both can do a job for us but Benzema or Reus would take us to a new level - that could be league winners

02 Aug 2015 23:46:21
Yeah, theo just isn't good enough to play up front on his own and I can't see him ever being good enough, can't win a header or hold up the ball. The second giroud came on he was bringing it down and laying it off to start attacks, and while no he ain't mr clinical, he makes the team much more likely to score. Theo needs to stick to the wings (though I prefer Sanchez and Ox) or play against the lesser teams if they play a high line.

I have been a big critc of Arsenes tactics in the past but his new one of changing ends at Wembley to kick towards our fans in the first half is working brilliantly, Vila had no answer to it and even Chelsea couldn't hold out to our fast out the Wembley blocks approach :-)

Good win and seals the treble. Now for the real thing next week and the rollercoaster of a ride that is the prem. I do hope we sign at least two more players before then but i can see we are comitted to do our best. Squad looking strong but a few holes need plugging. Big season for ox, theo, ozil, wilshire and welbeck. For me they need to be fit and step up to the potential they have.

02 Aug 2015 20:01:48
The thing I like the most is the continuation of the style of play, that the gung ho approach is a thing of the past.

Another positive result to add to what looks like a great build up to the season opener, the team do look fit and hopefully that is down to the work done behind the scenes by Shad Forsythe.

To be 11 points behind after the first 8 games of last season and end up 12 behind after 38 shows we have developed the start of consistency.

We had a win percentage of 78% through the last half of the season compared to Chelsea's 54% so we are doing a lot of things so much better.

West Ham have already had competitive games in the Europa League so they will be ready and Palace have made some sound signings so two big opening games.

02 Aug 2015 18:27:44
Few quick points on our squad:

- Pay whatever it takes to get a top striker in. We'd be very close to the real deal then.

- I'd still like to see another top defender come in but I appreciate it probably won't happen this summer.

- I think we will be sticking with Coquelin and Arteta until we can get William Carvalho next Jan/Summer.

Address those issues and I think we could have a real go in all competitions!

Nice to see that we won! Never hurts seeing our players lift somesilverware.
I have to get some things off my chest though.
How is it that people say they don't know if Wenger finally beat Mou?
Didn't you see the game? And even if you didn't don't you know what it means when you read that Arsene Wengers Arsenal won against a Chelsea side coached by Mourinho?
And the Community Shield is not a friendly nor is it part of the preseason!
If the club is obligated to participate it is simply not a friendly!
I know it is not the mos prestigeous trophy there is and teams might not always field there strongest sides but it is still a must-play game with silverware on the line
Nobody wants to lose and to they both teams had a pretty strong line-up that they wouldn't be afraid to start a EPL game with

Messenger one can make those sort of comments every week of the season, mistakes are made week in and week out, poor positional sense is the norm in any game .

JM could say the same about his back four................he won't though :)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I didn't forget to mention them , they just weren't worth the space in my post.

Love this time of year when ex arsenal pundits and Banbury get exited on the season ahead. But by January you lot come down to earth with a bump its the same every season. And yes I think Liverpool will be challenging this season with the players they have brought in same thing with man utd

.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im afraid its a 3 horse race again raver, same old story for utd and loserpool..and as ever your shower will be also rans, but it does worry me that what arsenal dont achieve is more important than what spurs do to your fans..sad really..

02 Aug 2015 20:56:11
Raver,

You are more than welcome on here.

We like to give the little people a chance, but why do you never mention Spurs?

Ed, you pretty much summed it up perfectly...top reply.

Ed its the same at arsenal when they won the fa cup last season what's the first thing they did was taunt spurs. That seems no class to me I understand if they won the European cup but it was the fa cup. I'm just waiting for jack Wilshire to brag about winning the worthless shield

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im afraid thats just local rivalry raver, and i should know being an evertonian in the city of liverpool mate, now im not saying you should come on here and applaud their achievements, but they have been a great team for many a year and i for one really respect their club, my advice to you would be to get an arsenal and spurs half and half scarf or maybe a little cannon embroidered under the chicken on the ball of your spurs shirt..you know you want to.. :)

02 Aug 2015 21:20:29
Ed you are ok I have a soft spot for the toffes since I was young. Loved the 80s side

Obviously happy we won, BUT we still have large cracks in our defense. We were lucky to get the shutout.

Our headers were on-point and our aggression was existent... however, our defensive shape and marking was shite.

For example, Ramires was not marked when he missed the header in the first half. Should have scored. Hazard was also not marked when he received the ball on the top of our 18 before he skied the shot.

Another example: a cross came in from Monreal's side and 4 Arsenal players were standing in front of the front-post guarding no one...

Also, Bellerin needs to know where to position himself and needs to know where his opponents are. We almost got scored on because Bellerin didn't take a look behind his shoulder.

Also, silly fouls.

Early days yet Messenger.

Some are only getting together for the first time, we have players out.

It's all about gaining some fitness and cohesion.

We won 1-0, it could have been 5-5.

Today was just a prelude to next Sundays game against West Ham.

I've got to be honest with you I'm not expecting absolute perfection for a full 90 minutes from us at any stage this season and I'm even less shocked we didn't see it in a preseason friendly.
Maybe I need to raise my expectations :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Aug 2015 18:46:38
Our defensive shape and marking has always been a little rocky.. even during last season as well.

I'm a defender at heart so I'm probably more critical than others.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Aug 2015 19:26:03
While wenger is manager our defending and organisations will always be a bone of contention, the same old problems will always crop up, because wenger is not a tactician or a coach, he's a manager, full stop. that's why i don't think we can ever win a premier league. that's my opinion and i won't change it. Saying that we are going into this season in a seemingly better shape squad wise and belief wise and keeping players fit is paramount to us putting a concerted challenge in. The only possible way we can win the league is to have the best team/ squad and in my opinion we are three or four players from that. It is a long season and i think we need a bit of luck and injuries from other teams for us to be a real no1 contender. Mistakes and lack of concentration will always be our downfall and organisation and disipline will as well, can we win a premier league playing pretty open football, i don't think we can. I do think at the moment chelski is the benchmark for a top balanced squad for us to aspire to.

Agree1 Disagree2

03 Aug 2015 09:10:51
messenger you are right there were a few lapses in the game but let's not be to worried, this defence conceded the 3rd fewest goals in the prem league last season, although only friendlies we have played some decent teams and still only conceded 1 goal in pre season, yes Chelsea had some chances but they are pre champions and very good at going forward, they had the best defence in league last season so as we had a few chances does that mean they need a re think in the way they defend after that game? even in a game against a league 2 team over 90 min i would expect them to have one or 2 chances.
I think our defence has improved massively over the last few seasons, it will always come up as it was really sloppy at one point, plus we are a very attacking team that play beautiful football at time so its always going to be the easiest part of our game to criticise. but when you look at the number of goals we actually concede its not that bad.

and the fact that a lot of our goals are often down to silly mistakes or individual errors would suggest that our shape and marking as a unit is actually quite good during play. set plays should improve yes but then i guess that zonal marking which i personally don't like.

The defeat does Chelsea's confidence no damage at all but raises our confidence 1 or 2%, good to see our discipline and work rate has disappeared over the summer.
When Chelsea park the bus they are extremely difficult to breakdown but have to rely on others mistakes to nick a goal, when they are positive and committed to winning games they are extremely dangerous but are much more vulnerable to conceding than their defensive record suggests.
Chelsea are rightly hot favourites but we are our best equipped to mount a very genuine and serious challenge than for many many years.

So Keane echoes what Wenger suggested the other week....

Keane believes his old club will improve on last season, but is concerned United have moved away from their philosophy of developing from within and are now simply splashing out in the transfer market.

"What worries me about United is the fact that even though they have bought so many good players this year - it is hard to get them all to gel quickly, " he said.

"United have gone away from what they were about - being a club whose squad seamlessly evolves from one season to the next.

"It's a bit like the late 80s again where they are buying a lot of players thinking they will gel - but it doesn't happen that quickly."

I think he is a little bit right on our guys and their selfies....

Love the player / Fan interaction but let's drop some of the six pack selfies...

I am happy upgrading the squad but not before we strengthen the goal threat & pace up front, strengthen the bite in midfield and then if we still want to add then I want cover for left back who can also play centre half.... I think I am happy with our centre halves tbh. Then and only then do I think we need to add some creativity in midfield

I do see Wenger with the position of the squad to lean towards opportunistic signings & the above fits that bill. Free quality player with a reasonable wage.....

I don't dislike the player.
i did hope we'd sign him when he left Milan in fact.
Dubbed the new Zidane, he never lived up to it.

The thing is, he's not good enough for us now.
He only really plays centrally, and we've got buckets of depth there so you can't even say he's going to be cover.
For him to play, we'd need Arteta/Cazorla/Wilshere/Ramsey/Ozil to all be out (which to be fair, could happen with our track record) which is unlikely.

Maybe I'm getting old, or maybe I've just made my peace, but if we don't sign anyone now, I'll be disappointed, but it won't make me angry.
We've come past the point of buying average players, hoping they'll succeed.
If we sign a player these days, they HAVE to improve our current crop.
