It has been said but I am very surprised we haven't gone for a holding midfielder. Last season we were weak at defending and weak at defending midfield especially. At the very least a van dyke like centre back and a matuidi like holding mid, with Sanchez staying is the minimum ingredient required. We haven't addressed our biggest shortfall at all.

Agree The central midfield area is still my biggest concern. Yes it was only a friendly today but there was still warning signs on display today that our back 3 often get too exposed by a lack of positional discipline in midfield. Ramsey and Xhaka for me as pairing are not good enough as a pair imho against the better teams that counter well. This should be a priority really above Lamar, especially at the amount it will take to get Lamar, we should move on from him.

Wenger signed his new contract, I think we have a few more years of having our glaring inadequacies overlooked for a while yet.

We have the DM we just don't have a DM partner, 2 seasons agp Le Coq was winning administration from everyone next to Caz then along came Polly, sorry I mean Xhaka :-)

Xhaka cost 34 million so people want him to be right for us but I think Le Coq is better at what we need.
Ramsey and Xhaka is so not the answer but it's what people want to be the answer.

We don't need a DM, we need a replacement for Cazorla. That is why we are looking at the likes of Seri.

So Steve can we agree on matudi, goretzka and lemar! Job done πŸ‘πŸ».

If we get matuidi, goretzka and lemar than I don't mind losing sanchez.

31 Jul 2017 11:31:54
We won't get matuidi, goretska and/ or lemar. Lemar is Sanchez replacement, which he isn't but we are playing a dangerous game.

β€œThere are two ways for us to strengthen, ” Wenger told a news conference on Friday ahead of this weekend’s Emirates Cup.
β€œThe first is internal. We finished with 73 points last year with a very strong run. We have a very young core of players.
β€œThe second part is of course to strengthen our squad from outside. We have signed Sanogo [but] he has not made the headlines. Why? Because he didn’t cost Β£50 to Β£100m.
β€œSanogo will surprise you because your expectation doesn’t look to be too high. He’s a top class striker.

Extract of Arsene Wenger's latest interview held today.

He will never change

I posted that here more than 4 years ago. anyone care to comment lol.

At least he didn't cost 50 or 100 mil. If that's any consolation. He wasn't his best punt ever.

At the end of the day 9 times out of 10 quality costs top doller, sure now and again a real young gem comes through the youth setup (Potentially Nelson for example could be such a gem we have to wait a see) . If you not prepared to pay top doller in fees and wages then you get left behind simple. Wenger's old mojo in finding the hidden gems in the transfer market has long gone as all teams have their vast scouting networks everywhere now so very few class young talents go unnoticed especially in Europe. You have spend big short term and also develop your own top class youth setup for the long term.

Hope Sanchez realises that he will be putting his career in jeopardy by leaving us and not having the opportunity to win The Emirates Cup.

Interesting close game today that was quite competitive for a friendly. Ox gave the best performance for us but was he playing himself for the shop window to leave or into the 1st team? . Elneny played decent enough at CB and nice to see Lacazette get his first home goal.

Going forward that central midfield area is still a bit of a concern for me, yes it was only a friendly but Seville cut through that central midfield area on the break far to easily for my liking. I would still like us to get a strong powerful more disciplined central midfielder.

Odd that we won this tournament despite Seville winning both their games, silly point system. Anyway it was a good workout building up to the start of the season.

So where does today leave us?
After losing to Chelsea we were relegation candidates and then we beat Benfica and we're suddenly title contenders and now? Mid table i guess :-)
Only joking peeps :-)

Lacazette is the laziest striker we've ever had, even Giroud moves around quicker.

30 Jul 2017 19:32:00
Defence looks poor - that's where it leaves us

Need more discipline in defending as a team

Need to attack quicker

I preferred Nelson down the right to Bellerin who was very poor

Elneny is not a CB

We reverted to slow attacks and passing round the box

Goal summed up Danny. Messes up his shot and it breaks for AL. Danny isn't good enough and we cannot have a side with both Danny and Theo as it's pace but not much else

Lethargic game today and we need Lens kicking some ass and Arsenal hitting the cheque book

Well done to Per for not celebrating

What I liked yesterday was having two attacking decent wingers!

I don't think we are any different to last season. Can't see what's changed if anything has. I think we all know what's going to happen next season. Especially if Sanchez jumps ship.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2017 14:11:24
Ok so here is a new theory. sanchez tells wenger he wants to go only to man city. wenger wants to delay it as much as possible so that he does not get any pre season training with them and buy lemar by that time to avoid fans backlash! Savvy? πŸ˜‰.

Lemar needs to be purchased regardless in my opinion. But we are unique in selling before a replacement is found.

30 Jul 2017 15:49:21
I think take Sanchez out of the equation, he won't be at Arsenal next season Lemar or not Lemar.

30 Jul 2017 16:42:42
Sanchez isn't going anywhere mate.

Agree1 Disagree2

30 Jul 2017 17:31:20
Possibly not mate and who knows maybe he will do a Suarez and knuckle down after being made to stay for one more season against his wishes.
If he had for us a final season like Suarez had for Liverpool I wouldn't be complaining even if it did mean us being certain of losing him for free next summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2017 13:51:05
Yes, sanchez will go, but why sell him before we get a replacement? If teams know we're desperate for a winger then it gives them the chance to drive up the price even further. We just have to wait for Your Stubbornness to sort out Lemar.

We paid 34 million for Sanchez and have had 3 excellent years service from him and will almost certainly make a profit on him.
He came to us a Barcelona sub and leaves with his standing in world football much much higher than when he arrived.
In an ideal world he would want to extend his contract but it hasn't worked out that way, if we are all unhappy to see a player leave then he must have given us some pretty good service whole at the club and maybe it's worth concentrating on that rather than the poor parting.

I hope wenger isn't looking at Per as an option for our defence.
Kos, mostafi, holding, chambers, belerin and kolasanic isn't a bad defence to have imo.
I think they need a proper DM in front of them and the back puzzle is completed.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

30 Jul 2017 11:17:24
A defence of Belerin Mustafi Kos Monreal Kol isn't the absolute best in the world but if organised and well displiened should be more than capable. Ideally I would like to see a real Tony Adams type leader in there who organises and keeps everyone disciplined throughout the game, but where do you find one of those?

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2017 12:18:28
They are experienced enough imo but as you said they need someone commanding, I hope lehmann return in the coaching team can bring it out of someone In the team.
As to buy a defender with that caliber you need to pay big bucks mate and we will never do such thing lol. silva from psg would be awesome tho.

30 Jul 2017 17:36:26
The statue defending on set pieces needs sorting out Moe mate because that's been a problem for years now.
I know people will disagree but I still think Ashley Williams would have been a good signing for his leadership quality alone.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2017 10:29:25
If psg want sanchez i'd swap lucas and matuidi for him both good players and would want to play for the club if city want him try get some players off them or dsy 80mill as the paid 50 for walker how is he worth that levy is a genius.

30 Jul 2017 11:20:59
Sanchez only has a year left on his contract, hence the problem. Whereas Walker had along term contract and the Toot could dictate the terms. We are trying to play hardball in respect of Sanchez, but in reality if Sanchez decides he wants out we will have to take what we can get, as he walks for free next season and we hardly want to keep a player who wants to leave. It's quite obvious as we are trying to sign Lemar to replace Sanchez.

Our most outstanding player so far in these friendlies has got to be Reiss Nelson.
If he carries on improving in the next few years he could be right up ther with the best in the World there's no doubt in my mind about that.
OK HERE IT COMES!
So far from what I've seen and all my friends agree Lacazette has been shi πŸ‘ŽYou can fill the rest in.
That young Reiss has put him to shame.

30 Jul 2017 12:10:48
Yeo, nelson looked good. Positive runs forward and yra kes back and defended too. Its still early and iwobi looked similarly great at first then it the wobbles. Reiss looks deserving of plenty od chances though.

Niles looked good too. Less dazzling as less forward runs, but again hope hr gets chances.

Lacazette? Again, little supply. Needs to be addressed by AW. Obviously playing with first choice 11 including ozil should make a big difference.

Kolasinac looks very strong which we needed. Really positive going forward. Determined too which is great.

Central midfield - xhaka seemed unused. The ball was going along the defense and up the wings. Again I'm hoping that wth the first 11 we'll vary play and go through the middle at times too.

Amended sorry Ed
Dags was the only person who got the point.
Regarding my post yesterday on Sanchez and his fake illness and me saying we are losing time basically wet nursing him into a descision Some some people must have just woken up from a deeeeeep
deeeeeep sleeeep or something? WAKE UP and smell the coffee seriously .
Are you trying to tell me Sanchez is ill?
While we are pussy footing round him is he staying? Isn't he staying
Just say "thanks mate you want to leave here's the door we need to move on. "
All this pampering! Tell him to F OFF if he doesn't want to be here. It makes me sick the way people are sucking up to him. We all know he's a brilliant player . BUT HE doesn't WANT TO PLAY FOR ARSENAL
ANYMORE. That's it! If he stays under sufferance he's going to be an unhappy player in the changing room probably causing loads of aggro. " F him off out of the club" simple as.

Sanchez situation completely boring the tits off me now. So much more important things happening in the world. Let the mercenary go. We was arsenal before, we're arsenal now, and we'll forever be arsenal. Give youth chance like reiss Nelson. If he takes his opportunity, brilliant. At least you've got someone that has strived to represent the badge. That in itself means more to me than someone holding club to ransom.

Would you force a partner who was desperately unhappy to be with you to stay? People have their spats but at the end of the day if someone no longer wants to be with you it realy is best to let them go then set about proving them wrong by becoming better than ever without them.
