I might be old welshgooner, but that education at Holloway School for boys stood me in good stead. Didn't do Charlie George badly either.

You look young too Ed, fine set of teeth, handsome flipper and dashing fin :-)

{Ed001's Note - why thank you g62, I was rather pleased with that selfie.}

31 May 2017 14:21:52
There is a very good reason I don't put a selfie up Ed mate, I know some people like to read this site over breakfast, during their lunch break or at a tea times :-)

With tuchel leaving dortmund and arsenal perhaps looking for a sporting director would it be inconceivable for him to come in at that position for the two years that wenger has extended for and take over once he leaves?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2017 21:55:29
Has Arsene put a block on a Sporting Director?

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 21:57:29
I hope not. don't see him at arsenal.

30 May 2017 22:39:43

30 May 2017 23:46:45
Dags not sure if we looked at sportings director or not. :)

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 18:16:40
Well we all knew it would happen so really no surprise. It really doesn't matter what The Arsenal do as like you all they are in my blood and have been for as long as I can remember. Over the last 73 years of my life I have seen some really bad Arsenal teams but the one thing they had in common was when they pulled on the shirt they gave it there all. let's hope the Leopard can change his spots and we get badly needed changes to our transfer and coaching policies. Sign up our players that have been allowed to run their contracts down and add some quality in the transfer window. I truly hope that Arsene Wenger has a couple of Happy and Successful couple of years, as I wouldn't like to see a repeat of the bad feeling and unrest of this season. However if a supporter is unhappy how else can he vent his feelings other than criticise, if we keep our opinions to ourselves then it appears that all is well. Come on Arsene give us something to shout about, go out with a bang. I am not forgetting we just won the FA Cup. It's the rest of the season that's been so disappointing. COYGs.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

30 May 2017 18:43:43
Agree with almost all that N7 mate, but I think next season all fans who are that unhappy with things should simply stay away, the banners planes and boooing has achieved nothing so personally I think those of us who wanted change and didn't get it should either totally accept the decision or stay away.
It's people's prerogative not to be happy and vote with thier feet and their money but it's not their right to continuely force thier minority opinions on others and stop them enjoying what they are happy with.
I didn't vote to leave the EU but I accept we are leaving and won't be leaving the country because of it the same goes with Arsenal imo I wanted change but the majority didn't and I accept that too.

Agree1 Disagree1

30 May 2017 19:47:12
2 great and honest posts
I'm glad he is staying.
G62 I hope you can still get behind the team, and when I'm down that way we can have a drink.

N7 Jesus your good on a comp for an old one. like me you have seen worse times than this, and I'm sure we will see even better.
Funny how not winning the fa cup is not enough.
Crazy.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 19:59:54
Can see your point G62 and i think the atmosphere in the stadium will be good but if we have a major wobble peoples memories are short and football fans memories are shorter than most and the Wenger out brigade could grow. Personally speaking i am a Wenger out man but when i am at the Emirates i get behind him and the team.

Imo it would have been great to call it a day after Saturdays great performance but he has chosen to give it another 2 years so let's hope the contracts of players we need to keep are sorted and the right players we need are brought in and roll on the 2017/18 season
Take care everyone.

30 May 2017 20:02:51

30 May 2017 20:45:39
Welsh mate i, d love that pint mate any time where in the same neck of the woods I will get the first round in geeza.
Heybridge I totally see where your coming from too mate, let's hope we both eat humble pie next season when we win the league :-) unlikely I know :-) .
Steve I see little point in carrying on the Arsene out campaign mate even if we are out of the title race by October or November, the club the fans had the choice and the majority gave the thumbs up to Arsene staying and that's good enough for me mate.
For what it's worth my advice to everyone who wanted change is accept what's happened and try to enjoy what we are most capable of achieving (cups) rather than dwell on what we are unlikely to achieve (titles and serious contention for them)

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 20:55:59
That's the problem Steve.

We pretty much start every season in fairly good shape, but not quite ready enough to mount a full PL challenge.

I tend to look at other teams more than Arsenal, looking at their weaknesses in the hope they can/ will slip up.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 21:18:38
"I'm sure we will see even better"

Welshie, sorry mate but at your age even specsavers can't help you see any better.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 21:58:23
We are a middle distance club/ team Dags mate with middle distance mentality and physical capabilities.
The fa and league cups are the 800 metres 6/ 7 games the Europa 15 games? While the premier league is a 38 game marathon we simply don't have the qualities for either mentally or indepth abilities.
Horses for courses.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 22:02:41
Dags I think the scrutiny by the media will be even more on wenger, he won't be able to fasten his zip without comparisons to last season. The press will be on it, stirring anything they can. If the chance arises. The natives will be led by results and the media.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 22:05:31
Not to add too much positivity to this fest but it feels to me that we have been building momentum since the new formation and maybe getting stronger as our personnel adapts.

We have super speedy wingbacks, quality and depth for the back three (Kos, Mus, Holding, Gab, Monreal maybe a couple of loanees return) . It could be a great formation for Xhaka etc - of course missing a clinical striker, but if we nail that and keep our stars we should have as good a chance as any . remember other than the very forgettable Spurs match, we ran the table of ManCity, Chelsea and ManU down the stretch - seems a pretty strong indication.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 22:40:59

Gunner I know mate, mI'm not on about the site, im on about what will happen next season. There will be little or no patience with a section ( don't know how many ) of the fans im afraid. Still we have signed wenger to win the league so that won't happen.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 23:55:19
Steve who really thinks we've signed Arsene to win the league mate? That's a dream and we all know that,
It could happen but it's unlikely.
We've signed Arsene because it's the popular choice not because we expect him to make us champions, anyone who thinks the this contract is about title ambition needs to give me a call because I've got a hardly used vintage lottery ticket for sale, cost me £1 in 1997 and be happy to let it go for £200 to the right buyer.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2017 01:43:18
Gunner, wenger has said himself, we are two or three player's away from it. Its not me saying it. Surely we have had all these meetings we are not privvy too and this is the final piece of the jigsaw. He must have been given the job to do that.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 18:03:49
It's official, Arsene and the board have made their decision and I totally accept that and resign from the Arsene out campaign.
My hope is we will as a club fans players manager and board ditch the fantasy 4th place trophy and get into the real world.
There are 4 real competitions for us to aim for next season
1 premier league title
2 Europa league
3 fa cup
4 league cup.
While I hope as always to be wrong bht I think the premier league is way beyond our current set up and clubs mentality, I just can't see how everything that has prevented us from mounting any kind of serious challenge for so long is going to magically sort its self out when nothing dramatically has changed.
The 3 cups? It's a big ask to get all 3 but I think we should go for it big style starting at the bottom and working our way up league cup Europa league and then FA cup paying all 3 tournaments total and full respect.
If the league goes well, happy days, if not let's be competitive anywhere and everywhere we can.

I'd take the league cup over the fa cup.

Agree0 Disagree2

30 May 2017 20:40:26
Even the spuds will be expecting a league challenge next season. If we can't expect the same or better we are dropping down the pecking order. We are a bigger club than them and that's a fact. The minute we expect and target lower we are not.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2017 08:20:33
Leeds Blackpool and Preston fans could argue the same Steve but unfortunately for us and them we won't be fielding our history or our all time best 11 over 38 games next season but both us and Spurs will be using our current resources.
Its difficult to see how next season's title isn't between Chelsea Utd City and Spurs, I'd be totally falling over Leicester city shocked if next season's premier league winners didn't come from one of those 4 clubs mate, Spurs have earned the right to be among the favorites for next season's title.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2017 13:02:59
So you are saying we have dropped behind spurs gunner. Terrible. So we have no ambition.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 17:07:18
After the season we have had and now Wenger has signed all holidays for transfer staff should be cancelled and Sanchez and ozil re signed plus targets bought! Can't drag around like normal get it done early - sure ozil and Sanchez would have a bearing on players considering joining! Includes targeting players to be sold . Probably it's money helping but City buying from benfica and Monaco early! It is what it is but Arsene get it done - would honestly placate a lot of people COYG.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2017 17:57:07
lol Sussex . I think that transfer staff as you call them work when the windows open and on Holliday when it's shut 😂.

According to the BBC Wenger has signed a 2 year deal. I'm torn, I really want him to win the league with us one more time but I'm not sure he's got it in him.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

30 May 2017 17:33:12
I'vevseen polls on the internet asking that very question and not only to arsenal supporters. They are averaging 80/ 20 agreeing with you and me. It doesn't mean he wont, just that people think he wont.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 18:55:31
He won't win anything. Tactically he is far behind. mark my words next seson we will all be here moaning about him. I would love to be proven wrong but i don't see that happening.

Agree0 Disagree2

30 May 2017 15:59:52
Well it appears Arsene has signed, everyone knows my feelings about him so i not going into a rant but just carry on supporting them like i have been doing for 55 years.
Just like to clear something up here about Spurs, they have a good squad with a promising manager but all they have done the last couple of seasons in the prem is play good football and win nothing bit like us.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2017 16:30:16

I always find posts like this a bit degrading and condescending.

Whether you are Wenger in or out, everybody does get behind the team and does support them.

I'm Wenger in, but a lot of my mates are Wenger out, but they still support the team and are as passionate as the next man.

On this site, there's Wenger in and out, it doesn't mean the "in" brigade are more passionate than the "out" brigade.

Having a different opinion to the next person doesn't make you any less loyal, nor does it make you more loyal.

Agree1 Disagree1

30 May 2017 16:54:10
Here here dags! Me for one would like a change because it has to happen soon anyway! But if he stays then fine il support him and our team. The fans have a part to play and I don't want another toxic season in the rafters . Wembley was a good lesson. Let's sing, be happy be greatfrull and be above all else hopefull . COYG.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 17:03:57
Dags well said. What some people on here don't seem to realise that if you don't have the same opinion you are some sort of carbuncle on society. No its opinion, not fact not truth not what's going to happen, its someone opinion. its nice to know most accept that that's what it is. Just opinion.

Agree1 Disagree0

30 May 2017 17:12:06
Dags I'm sure it's not meant to come across that way. However i don't believe everyone gets behind the team and supports them. I swear I saw a lot of fans not wanting us to finish in the top 4 so arsene might go. That's not backing your team. So whilst I agree with you to some extent I do believe there is a minority that will not back us and want arsene to fail to prove them right.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 17:27:42
D you may not agree with them and for the record neither do I but that's their opinion because they feel its the only way that things would be put right. Its not fact, its what they hoped for, for in their minds a better future. Whether they are right or not is not an issue, they have been ignored anyway, so the fact is their opinion didn't matter a jot anyway. i'm sure the minute the team steps over the white wash they will cheer them on. I don't knock them and I don't knock the wenger in at all costs either. I may not agree but its their opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 21:21:00
D16,
That wasn't a pop at you.

Just a general pop at everybody, lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 21:39:56
Steve I'm not saying they're not allowed opinion. I don't care for them but each to there own right. I was more saying to dags sadly not everyone does back the team 100%. Not wanting us to finish high as possible Is not backing.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2017 09:47:34
I disagree dags, I see plenty of people hoping we will lose so they can spew their negative opinions, happens in the live chat all the time. Go 1-0 down 'wenger out, knew this would happen, our team is awful', suddenly we pull 2 back to take the lead and they disappear.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 13:42:15

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 14:54:08
Well the pressure is officially on. Big signings and Sanchez to stay might just placate the fans for a while.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 19:00:40
Most selfish decision ever. Does he really deserve a new contract based on merit? Absolutely no. He is holding this club to ransom and if you ask me that is a bit selfish and arrogant. I can bet with everything i have that next year we will all be on this forum moaning about him.

I would love to be proven wrong but i don't see that coming. when he won the FA cup i felt happy for him and i thought he may walk away but here he is about to damage his reputation. Of course we will all get behind the team but i don't expect much.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 13:20:16
Time and time again, i have always wanted to know wenger's tactical approach to games and i would usually find little or no material material because frankly wenger has no tactics!

Even simeone as defensive as he is, he has a tactical approach to how he approaches the game. Guardiola, Pochettino and Tuchel employ positional play. Most modern coaches have a certain way of approaching the game while at the same time tailoring their tactics to the opponent of the day but wenger doesn't do that any of that and for that alone, i think we are never going to get better.

With wenger as our coach we are handicapped. We need a modern coach. Wenger is past it but he is not going to walk away is he?

Believable1 Unbelievable4

30 May 2017 13:45:19
Funily enough, I know some people will be surprised but I agree.

Agree0 Disagree3

30 May 2017 13:08:26
News coming through in the Daily Telegraph that a 2 year deal has been agreed and will be formally confirmed on Wednesday. Interesting it stated the following: Wenger has been told that his core powers - coaching, picking the team and directing the transfer strategy - will not be affected but has been sensitive about the parameters of change and also did not want any of his core staff to leave against his will. Coaching was clearly mentioned, confirming my comments below.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

30 May 2017 13:19:04
The transfer authority should not be in his hands. Yes hand a list of players over but final stages not his call.

Agree1 Disagree0

30 May 2017 14:37:15
It's fantastic news R. G. this will keep spurs a champions league club for a few more years. Gary lineker was spot on in saying Wenger and Arsenal are falling further away from the top boys in the league,

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - lets get thinks straight raver, spurs had a great season but actually won NOTHING!, arsenal won the FA cup which is still a major domestic trophy so lauding it up seems a bit premature for me mate...no one ever remembers the runner up in any competition..

30 May 2017 15:21:20
Oh dear raver embarrassing yourself yet agiain. There are no trophies for finishing second. Come back when you have actually won a trophy, it's fast approaching a decade since the toot actually won anything. No league title this century and 56 years since the last one and we all know what that means. the pain at the lane just goes on.1961. To think Arsene Wenger has won more titles at Arsenal than the toot have won in their entire history.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 16:42:18
That's the point I keep trying to make to old raver ed. they are going in the right direction but the history books will show us again been the dominant out of the two.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 17:55:29
I'm not mugging you off for winning the FA cup its definitely a trophy to be won, my point is Wenger is not cut out to challenge the big boys in the league and ge won't get any closer next year while playing Thursday and Sunday. He's a great cup manager but goes missing in the league.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 22:46:44
Raver this season gone and im being honest here. You would have loved our season and we would have yours. Has it is we are winning trophies and not challenging in the league. You are doing the complete opposite. But to you a trophy is a must to rubber stamp your form. We have to win the league to rubber stamp ours.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 12:45:16
Dortmund have sacked thomas tuchel. I am not sure whether i agree with their decision as i think he is a world class coach. He won't be able for too long.

Ed don't you think Arsenal should swoop in for him right now if not employing him immediately at least get a pre-contract with him so that we will have at least one good option when things finally start collapsing under wenger again next season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Why would he sign a "pre-contract" with Arsenal?}

30 May 2017 13:02:17
Of course sign a pre contract for 2 days 😂.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 13:09:03
😂😂 yea can you sign a pre contract for 2 days whilst we see if arsene wants to stay on.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 13:47:14
Tuchel not for me, he's too radical and hasn't proved his ideas work yet.

Agree1 Disagree0

30 May 2017 16:43:16
I would just say he is cool steve. Radical is a bit to far man 👍🏻.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 17:06:18
Ha ha it does sound a bit weird when you read it back.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 19:05:37
The problem with wenger is that he lacks alex ferguson's humility at least in footballing terms. Fergie would change assistants often and infact they were the ones doing the training and coming up with the tactics. That is why he was able to win for so long. wenger only wants yes men.

So i really don't see our tactics changing next season and because of that i don't expect us to challenge for the league next season. Wenger is not gracious enough to walk awy and because of that we miss out on good coaches. I am preety certain tuchel won't be available for long.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 12:41:27
Journalists are saying Wenger has agreed to sign for 2 more years. Do you have any details on this Eds?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No, but to be fair I am at Heathrow right now and not looking to dig at all.}

30 May 2017 11:15:28
sorry I know this is copy and paste, but on ssn it says this "Arsene Wenger will be handed at least £100m to spend in the transfer market if he agrees to stay at Arsenal (Star) " surely that its not nearly enough to reshape the team for the next season, in real terms this would only buy maybe three decent players with current prices so high, although I know Wenger likes to shop in the bargain section, I feel this will not be enough for the work that needs doing, what are your thoughts on this.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2017 12:18:30
Thats one signing mbappe.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 13:00:50
Wenger has had money at his disposal and that has been one of the critiscims, that he is reluctant to spend it and Gazidis has said as much. If he is given £100m, it is ample as, if we can keep the currenrent squad togther, we realistically only need 2 or 3 players and we have reportedly signed a new left back on a free. We have surplus players that can be sold/ released; Gibbs or Monreal, Jenkinson, Szczesny, Campbell, Debuchy, Sanogo and possibly Wilshere.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 13:18:56
The key is to keep Alexis and ozil, I remember Ed saying Marco Reus was an option, well he's not anymore he will be out till the new year by the looks of it.

So the priority is to keep Alexis, if we are selling him, i don't see us being able to sign anyone else who can be as good as he is.

With chelsea, man utd, spurs and city not selling any of their key players it will be another uphill battle

4th place trophy hunt here we come.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2017 05:33:03
The start of an interesting summer;
1) Will we keep Wenger, Ox, Ozil and Sanchez?
2) . Will we release/ sell Debuchy, Jenkinson, Sanogo, Ospina, Gibbs and Campbell?
3) . What are the futures of Szczesny, Wilshere, Chambers and Perez?
4) Will we sign 2 or 3 top class players?
The new formation and the FA Cup win has clearly lifted a dark cloud off the club. When we lost to Watford, WBA and Palace, I thought Wenger had lost the players and had to go, but the transition since he changed the formation has been amazing.
On a separate note, I wish Tony Adams would stop embarrassing himself. He was an awesome player and captain at the club, but his managerial record has been poor and he should refrain from criticising Wenger who has been a great manager, winning many trophies and overlooking a tantalum overhaul of the club.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - to be fair to Adams he has criticised Wenger's coaching, not management. Many others have also criticised Wenger's coaching, or lack of it mainly, including a large portion of the current playing staff.}

Hi Ed, point taken, but Adams managerial/ coaching career has been atrocious, whilst Wenger has won 3 League titles, a record 7 FA Cups wins, 6 Community Shields (possibly 7) , 1 French title, 1 Coupe de France and 2 Japanese Cups. An inept coach couldn't have accumulated so many trophies. I believe Adams is bitter because Wenger wouldn't employ him as Pat Rice's replacement. Adams, a great footballer is clearly no intellect and he struggled from day one to understand intellectual Wenger and his methods, which have proven to be very successful.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - what difference does Adams coaching or managerial career make? He is talking about his experience as a player under Wenger. Wenger has never won a thing as a coach, he has coaches under him. Adams may well be bitter, but that does not mean he is wrong, Wenger does not do the coaching, he always has a coach under him. It is not that unusual, very few managers actually coach in English football, they have always ended up being more of a sporting director/director of football than a coach, even in the past. Even the likes of a legend such as Busby or Paisley did little actual coaching once in the head role. Fergie oversaw coaching, but never coached, Redknapp the same. They, like Wenger, are managers, not coaches.}

I have to beg to differ, not only is Wenger often see with a stop watch in hand coaching, but of course he has coaches working under him, who of course work according to his instructions. The same goes for other managers, who have coaches working under them, utilising their methods. As a player under Wenger, Adams career flourished and many trophies were won, this was clearly down to Wenger's methods, incuding his coaching.

{Ed001's Note - that should have been left for me to reply. Wenger is 'seen' often, but only when there are cameras around. He does not instruct the coaches, he manages them, they produce the coaching plans, not him. He oversees them and decides whether or not he is happy with their work, but he does not do their work for them. And yes, the same does go for all the other managers. They delegate.

As for Adams, he is quite clearly of the belief that his improvement was down more to him stopping drinking and the introduction of proper dietary plans etc, rather than the coaching Wenger provided. I can see his point, Wenger is not a defensive coach and did not work on that in training, the basics were there from George Graham. Adams was given more freedom to play under Wenger, which allowed him to show more quality, but that is all he believes it was.

By the way, I should point out that I am not saying Adams is correct, merely explaining why he has said what he has done.}

I think Dixon or keown defended dams by explaining that Wenger doesn't do detailed training himself but oversees an environment where the players take more responsibility, eat and train in a disciplined way, learn from each other and it helps them be more flexible on the pitch. whoever it was said that they didn't think Adams was knocking aw management but that he literally didn't/ couldn't coach players - as he hasn't and it's not his style.

Yes RG. Will be interesting to see what happens on those points you raise.

Ed,
Could you argue the fact (from Wenger's point of view) , that the likes of Adams, Winterburn, Dixon, Keown and Bould did not need coaching?

Admittedly, a lazy way out by Wenger.

{Ed001's Note - no, I would argue, from Wenger's point of view, that he is a manager and not a coach. Which he is.}

In my experience those who can do and those who can't tend to find fault in what others do.
I don't hear a lot from Conte Klopp Poch or even Pep on how good or bad others are at that jobs, maybe they don't need to talk about others to get noticed.

How many excellent coaches have we seen fail miserably at management?
The two jobs are completely different.
Recognising our own weaknesses and bringing in people to do what we can't is a great strength imo, where would Richard Brandon be today if he thought he knew everything and no one could do anything better than him?
My guess is he'd own an old Subra instead of his own island.

To clarify, Adams benefitted enormously under Wenger's coaching methods, which of course he has staff assisting him with. As a coach/ manager, Adams has been a complete failure. Coaching incudes training, advice and guidance, to suggest Wenger doesn't do this or is poor at is simply ludicrous in the extreme, his record clearly shows to the contrary, including the trophies won by Adams under Wengers guidance and the fact that his career was prolonged despite being a self-confessed alcoholic for may years, until his mid 30's, possibly 36, if I recall correctly.

Hi Gunner62, on the continent the two jobs are often separate, but one of the criticisms in English football has been that the manager often does both roles. Of course Wenger coaches the team and would be horrified to hear to the contrary. Yes, he has coaches working under him, biut they use his coaching menthods and instructions. How many times have we had heard of Wenger's short timed sessions and seen him stop watch in hand? I ladored Adams as a player, would I want him coaching the team? No thanks. When Wenger came to us as manager back in the mid-1990's he brought in new methods of coaching, which the players quickly adopted and success followed.

RG his ideas were about diet, vitamins, relaxation and team ethics, not fundamental coaching. In fact I read somewhere from lee dixon I think, he said that wenger changed nothing in the back four, except he wanted them to play 10 yards further up the pitch. He isn't known for his coaching and tactics in the football world. Its no secret.
