There was quite a good point made by David James in the TV coverage and it was that Suarez can't play for 6 games so we're ready to wait so this could be a saga that last right to the last week.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why do you say it's a good point.

His suspension has been known for several months now

This is not a joke: I honestly do not think that Nicklas Bendtner is a bad player, if you think back a few seasons ago when Van Persie was injured he was the one who got us the goals. Yes he may be over confident but I remember when we played Sunderland a few years ago and it was a 0-0 draw Bendtner was useless, missed a few sitters and as a result was booed by his own fans. In the following game, a champions league match against Porto, if I remember correctly, he scored a hatrick. He is a mentally strong player and I think he is more reliable coming off of the bench than Akpom or Chamakh.
89'gooner

Believable0 Unbelievable0

When was he ever getting the goals? His best season was 9 goals in 31 appearances in the league back in 08/09? 22 goals in 99 appearances in total hardly describes a good striker to me

Say no to Suarez

Agree0 Disagree0

Not bad, not world class. Definitely. not a winger, which is where he was stuck half the time - what was with that? If we got him and we are paying him, we should play him. He was banging them and for Denmark a couple of years ago, so why not for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

He's always been better than Chamakh and despite a few issues I don't think he's a bad player either.
I think things could've been different had we not signed chsmakh and had bendtner as our auxillery striker rather than right winger (another Wenger masterstroke)
But hey ho. He's a bit of an ego warrior and his off field antics/drinking aren't compatable to the modern professional footballer
AG

Agree0 Disagree0

Wasn't this the Porto game we won like 5-0? He took a penalty because he wanted a hattrick and the team in general played really well. It didn't do much for his mentality seen as he missed that chance to Barca out after RVP got sent off.

Agree0 Disagree0

Played on the wing by wenger, with a target man who always dropped back out of the box (van persie) so if he did his job and got the ball there was never anyone to cross it to. Wingers decision to stick him on the wing, and wengers decision not to use him now. Same situation as arshavin, wenger clearly fell out with both of them.

Agree0 Disagree0

When he also scored against barca the season before you mean

About the booing today, it was wrong, we must get behind whatever team we manage to pull together, the fans were told to expect new signings, by our chief executive, we as fans have no other way to show our displeasure with the current situation, not to strengthen our squad prior to the season is a stupid and dangerous thing we are no where near to competing with the top 3sides and are in very real danger of slipping into the following pack, if gardens thinks this is ok he must be removed by the board, we can no longer think a battle for 4th is good enough for anyone both inside and outside our club, we are better than this
Yater21

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Oops meant Ivan gadiizis

Agree0 Disagree0

I didn't realise there was booing today. It was a friendly! To be fair, a draw with the second best team in Italy who had strengthed quite a bit, isn't exactly bad. A draw against Man City back when we played would have been good wouldn't it.

Does anyone else think that having Rosicky fully fit for a season could be a real boost?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's great cover for jack/ramsey, not for cazorla though, no one replaces cazorla
rosicky can try too much sometimes, not great at tracking back imo

Agree0 Disagree0

Cover for Ramsey, don, t make me laugh, he is a class or 2 above Ramsey.

If fit I would play him full stop.

Shaneyd

Cover for jack/ramsey? I consider them to be cover for rosicky.

03 Aug 2013 22:31:07
Poor first half today, I like the look of Gnarby, but he looked out of depth against a classy Napoli. I think Ramsey was wasteful with opportunities as well, had several chances at having a crack at a nervy Reina. Also like Jenkinson but he had a howler as well. Arsenal looked much better in the second half, especially when Theo, Sagna and Ox-Chambo came on. Added lots of pace, and Arteta gave us a bit of protection.
I think Rosicky worked his socks off and done well as did Giroud.
Cracking goal by him as well, nearly lost my voice celebrating and LK6 showed his brilliance at the back and at heading with his stellar performance marked with a goal.
Let's hope for more goals and a win tomorrow.

While I have you, I liked the look of Porto's Kelvin, reminds me a little of Neymar. Has plenty of skill, not afraid to run at the defence and a work horse always moving. May be worthwhile to run the rule over him against Napoli tomorrow

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I didn't think he started in the champions league last season, how much ut have you played on FIFA?

Bergkamp5353

I had never heard of Kelvin until I saw him line-up for Porto at the Emirates yesterday. And he looked a decent player, hence the suggestion to see how he fares today

booing t home in pre season is too far! To make the emirates a fortress we have yo get behind the team guys! Also Wenger said were trying, it's not easy buying players this isn't footy manager!
Just eait till the end of the window keep the faith lads!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd just like to say it was only a very very small minority of persons booing the Arsenal players. The majority of the booing was for Pepe Reina's time waisting antics and for Gonzalo Higuain.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would suggest if we want to keep the Emirates a fortress, then we border the place up and prevent the opposition from getting in.

Our squad is thread bare

With today's game I wasn't that bothered about scores what really hit me hard was terrible atmosphere, now OK crowd booed quite quickly and you can kinda understand that a tension is high but the lack of songs and generally singing and banter

The only time it picked up was when the away fans got escorted out or right at the end when we sent the Napoli fans quite

I was at Millwall the other day for a friendly and they sung all game and it was such a lively atmosphere, whereas today everyone was looking at the Porto and Napoli fans because try we're singing and dancing?

This is something IMO that needs address I would love to see the atmosphere and passion return to the ground rather then it being like a game chess

Pre-season as most people will say is all about becoming 'match fit'.

What a load of b***ocks.

In today's press conference it became obvious that Wenger is responsible for transfers. So he is to blame if we do not bring quality players in. Look at his comments about Higuain. He admits that he decided against a transfer. I hope he has someone better in his sights who he actually will bring in (which I very much doubt). Otherwise we are the biggest joke again in transfer dealings.

Of course another striker would welcome, but I have a inkling Giroud will bang them home this season. A soild defensive mid would be a game changer.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

CDM's don't change games they might save games but I agree we need a good one.

Agree0 Disagree0

Your 'inkling' that Giroud will become good, is based upon what?

Heavy sun spot activity

Couldnt disagree more with the sentiment that dcm's aren't game changers; they aret headline-stealers, but they allow other people to be.

When arteta came on yesterday arsenal transformed because he held the shape together, and we git back in the game. Definitely changed the game!

I was lucky (or unlucky) enough to be at the game today and amongst the negatives there were a few positives too.
Firstly, Koscielny, man of the match by a mile. He bossed the defence, never hesitated to get stuck in and put a tackle in unlike most of the team.
In the first half we were lacklustre and got caught on the counter attack twice and unfortunately conceded both times. I hate to say it because I really like him but Jenkinson struggled massively today, the team looked completely different the moment Sagna came on.
I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but I thought Rambo also put in a good shift while he was on the pitch, he looked really solid in defence.
Giroud's goal was superb, I honestly thought he'd fallen over and fluffed it again then suddenly the ball was in the back of the net! And Koscielny's equaliser was just perfect.
For me I think we really missed Cazorla today, although Rosicky tried his hardest to take the role of the playmaker.
Podolski was awful today, he seemed to have some aversion to shooting when he's normally so clinical.
It's a shame that the fans booed the players because I actually thought that they stepped it up to a whole new level in the second half but I guess it's the only way to let the board know how unhappy we are.
One last thing, where was Wenger today because I definitely didn't see him there. Fingers crossed he was busy tying up the Suarez transfer!
Sorry for the long post!

Look at the positives of today's game. Kos was immense, Rosicky looked sharp, Gibbs isn't injured, Wilshere was strong in tackle and showing glimpses of his class, Gnabry played well just needs more game time to get some composure. Walcott was direct when he came on and Ox was always looking to attack. These games will be disjointed and not flowing we looked vulnerable times but also dangerous at times against a strong Italian team.

Do we need a couple of signings yes, is the window closed? No! let's just wait and see. Looking forward to tomorrow hopefully see some more of the youth players like Ryo and Eisfield and Sanogo. With the season 2 weeks away right now it's fitness that counts. Next weeks friendly against Man City will be the same no team is going to go all guns before the season kick off

It's abundantly obvious we need a defensive midfielder, I thought I would just suggest someone a bit different that could be brought in to do that job, Hvard Nordtveit. He was at the club for a number of years and played more as a defender, but since his move to Gladbach, he's been played in the midfield and from what I've read and the little I've seen of him he's been very good there only 23 years old and Wenger was a big fan of his very reluctant to sell. Just wanted to put someone a bit different forward.

After watching the game today and with the departure of Gervinho looking very close, we need to get a real Winger in. My pick we be another arsenal old boy Vela, I was a huge fan of him when he was at the club, he is now a proper winger unlike when he was at the club and was ranked third best player in spain last year behind messi and ronaldo and second best in a fan vote. Does anyone know if we have a buy back clause for either of these players? Though I doubt either would be likely to sign.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We have a clause for Vela for about 3.5 million I believe.

Ed's with all the talk about Suarez signing or not signing, would there be a chance of going in for someone else who may be available? I know smokescreens and mirrors have been used in the past with transfer targets, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been very quiet this transfer window, with him getting older I wouldn't suppose he would command a HUGE transfer fee like he had in the past. I think he would be a great fit with the current style of play at arsenal. So if the Suarez transfer doesn't come to fruition, would there be a chance of Ibra playing in the UK?

Gman {Ed027's Note - i doubt it mate

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2013 19:52:14
We all know we need to sign some players-goes without saying.

As for today? I don't take too much notice to pre season friendlies (whether we win 10-0 or lose 3-0) tbh, they are more about fitness than anything, so I don't judge them too much.

Seen arsenal sides play not too hot in pre-season to go onto win the title.

Not saying we will! just perspective and context.

I think any criticism is generated by anxiety about our current squads ability to compete.

So, yeah as I began, we all know we need signings.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't blame people for booing, it's the only way fans are heard. I doubt they look at blog pages for our opinions. I wouldn't boo myself and never have, but I can understand their frustration.

Every fan loves the preseason transfers and not doing that they are not attracting fans. the more fickle fans will move on too. before people say "we don't want fans like that at Arsenal"Remember that more fans means more money and a better team but the quality of those fans means little unless they make a bad atmosphere at games.

I like most football fans look forward to preseason but for us Arsenal fans it just brings frustration and disappointment, This is the first season I can remember where we haven't been amidst rumours of our players leaving and we haven't (sanogo aside) signed anyone.

I'll never turn my back on my team but I have on the transfer window as it brings me little excitement any more.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Great Post!

Cannot believe some of the fans do not even wait until the final whistle to air their perceived grievances.

Man Citeh and Man United both lost this preseason you do not see their fans typing in vitriol about the squad or the coaching staff.

Get behind the team.

The preseason games are meaningless and are designed to increase fitness, match sharpness, and blood new / young players.

I agree that arsenal need to sign a couple players but the window is open for another month.

So along with the first poster I urge fellow gooners to keep calm and carry on or renew your lithium prescriptions.

watched the game and it highlighted yet again we need a defensive midfielder. I was hoping wilshere-ramsey would work as the other could stay deep when the other attacks. but no there they both go all guns blazing leaving the defence exposed.

i'm so annoyed because we looked eager to sign bender, made a big bid which was rejected and then. nothing! imo should have come back with a bigger bid. yeah he maybe wasn't worth more but he clearly was our primary target. i'm asking, would it be so bad if we bid a bit over the player's value just to get him? he would be a starter for us and improve the team massively.

the need for a top top striker was also obvious. giroud simply went missing and podolski had a terrible game. we need one who can score a goal by himself out of nowhere. yes i'm talking about suarez.

these two marquee signings and a defender are imo the minimum we need to do to even think about the top four let alone winning the league.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

100% agree you could see the massive void left in midfield in the first half and lack of pace only web Ox and theo can on game changed

Very impressed with Ox in the middle as well but what stood out to be the most was the desperate need for a poacher so many times the box was empty with Giroud out wide or we got the ball to the box an lost it

If we get a top quality GS and DM I think we've got a real shout,

Well 2-2 much better in 2nd half more pace and penetration, after a sloppy first half especially on the 2 goals conceded.

Sagna and Walcott worked well on the right caused problems. Giroud got into game more. They sat back more in 2nd half which helped us take the game to them more but I think their subs upset their balance while ours improved us and gave us more threat.

Kos Man of the match, good aggression and commitment did not give Higuein a sniff maybe not such a bad us not getting him afterall certainly not at the 34 Mill Napoli, perhaps not the stamina for EPL.

Roscicky played well and Giroud improved as game went on. Dissaipointed in Podolski wasted some good opportunities.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Higuian is no where near fast enough, strong enough or fit enough for this league. Thought this all along and surprised that people wanted him soo much.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What planet are you on. If you think having to fight back from losing 2 goals in games is the way forward then we are all doomed.

Agree0 Disagree0

Most people want Giroud to stay, and wanting the squad to be improved isn't fickle its common sense, If you don't think adding Suarez or a player of his quality to the squad would improve it then you need your head examined. We are also still crying out for a defensive midfielder.

Agree0 Disagree0

I woudl no over abalyse it too much it was stilla freindly afterall,

Agree0 Disagree0

I would not over analyse the match too much it was still a friendly afterall and we are still getting up to speed. Don't forget the long trips we have made in the far east recently and that may have been a factor for some of the players in first half, just having lethargic start as if we are still playing in humid conditions still.

We need to work on defending as a team better to cut these sloppy goals the 2nd one in particular. The first one I think Jenkinson lost the high ball in the Sun as it came down so mis-judged the clerence, which can happen.

A proper DM is still needed I feel to give better protection for our back 4 in a high line.

Better 2nd half, more urgency and speed in our play, Walcott and Sagna linked up well. Although Napoli sat back more and lost their way with their subs. KOS was man of match lead by example, disappointed in Podolski wasted some good opportunities.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Ed

couple of questions

1) if RM sell Ronaldo to Man Utd, then they will need 2 players to replace (ronaldo and higuain), bale can replace ronaldo, whom do u think will replace higuain (may be Suarez) or please let me know is ISCO a replacement for Higuain?

2) what should be price for ronaldo, surely he should be worth much more than bale, as he has proved he is world class and bale proved only last season he scored more frequently as he was allowed to play freely behind the striker.

3) RM has spent more than 60 million plus till day if they buy bale 100 million then surely they will have some debt, considering the hefty wage package their players carry and also bale will be having a big increase as well. just explain why FFP does rules are not violated? what was the total revenue generated by Madrid last year?

Loaded Guns. {Ed029's Note - (1) You should be asking all of this on the RM page mate. (2) Ronaldo has a fixed release clause fee of €100M. (3) We don't talk about money any more and this is to do with another club in any case.}

Many great questions being posed of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger these days. Of course everyone is entitled to an opinion. As one who has been involved in the contractual sporting world as I have for what seems like an eternity I would encourage my fellow supporters to remember a few things about the ownership of clubs:

1. Each owner has their own mantra/desire. As such the freedom to support the club financially is an individual choice. No one is forced to buy tickets, merchandise or television. If one does not like the direction of the club then take accountability.

2. Every club and league provides direction from top down. As such at Arsenal the direction of the club comes from Mr. Kroenke and is executed by Mr Gazidis and Mr. Wenger. Any other suggestions I can assure you are based on media speculation or unsubstantiated gossip. This is Mr. Kroenke's team, he employs those who are like minded and share his vision.

3. Having money to spend and spending it wisely are two different things. I have personally been involved in many contractual dealings where I have wondered just how foolish the league or club are in making this deal. I believe Arsenal this summer have shown intent to spend which I believe is positive, what I believe is more positive is that we're setting a cap of what we deem is acceptable. I ask those who are frustrated, would you have increased your bid on Higuain if the seller reneged on the original agreed price and increased it 50%? Would you spend an additional 25% on Suarez (The difference between our offer of 40 mil and the suggest asking of 50 mil) if you truly believed there to be a release clause of 40 mil + 1?

4. The window closes on I believe August 31st as such we still have 4 weeks. Many clubs are in a similar position yet we have already assumed the worst. Sometimes I believe the shortcomings which are perceived of the club can be attributed to the negative assumption of our supporters, I ask why not take a more positive viewpoint and be encouraged by that which you have than discouraged by that which you do not know.

5. 8 years - Its amazing to me just how much we live in an instant gratification society where winning is required yesterday, today and tomorrow. So much so that winning takes precedence over patience, building and development. I am proud of our club perhaps most over the last 8 years because of the obstacles we've had to endure. Despite the player loss, financial restrictions, corporate contractual obligations, stadium debts and other factors our brand has never been better. As a result the club has stated that we are looking to spend, yet despite this our spending is required immediately by our supporters. Patience is a virtue, and sound judgement and prudence ensure viability. Well done to our club I say for the past 8 years, AFC is more than just trophies its about the growth of our club not simply silverware count!

As always I enjoy the many different opinions that are shared on this brilliant forum. Remember transfer dealings take time, I know this first hand, be patient, our time will soon return!

"Winning is required, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" Its Not About the Winning, Which I don't like, Its The let's settle for 4th, which Wenger has sought after for the last 7/8 seasons.
I listened to an Evertonian who was asked he's targets for this season, He said " let`s go for 1st place, ok we may not win it, if we don't then go for 2nd, and so on". Yeah you may laugh at that, But I agree with that. Arsene has given up, and thinks ok, Man u, Chelski, Man City are way richer than us, so I will go for 4th.
This year cause of He`s and the Board`s stupidness not to buy, we will finish 6/7 at most, I don't agree with Wenger Philosophy, that this team is good enough, IT IS CLEARLY NOT, It was not last season, and it won't be this season, All because of Wenger`s Stubborness, and arrogance.
Would any of Man U, Chelski, and Man city, put up with a manager who has not won nowt for 8 seasons? NO, And why he is making the board so much money, The board will not get rid of a Bank Manger, Cause he`s no longer a football one

What a nice way to see the world. In reality its less acceptable to charge the highest prices and produce average performances than it is to build up a slight debt and win something.

Agree0 Disagree0

Nice post mate, hope your well.

dont agree with everything you say, but any 1 who takes the time to write good read deserves recognition

Actually it's quite easy to charge the highest price if
the demand is there, it's simple supply and demand.

I know nothing about the lad but with so much noise being made about ginter do you believe he will be our next signing and how good is the boy; do you foresee him pushing our 3 1st choice centre halves for a place or will he be "one for the future"

100% nailed on - Arsenal to unveil their new signing at the Emirates Cup today, Wenger has finally given in to player pressure and signed "The Running Man" who rose to fame on the Gunnners far east tour after chasing the team bus for 5 miles! No fee is involved as he is un-attached and had fitness levels that are higher then Chamachks. He is versatile and can play anywhere! U heard it here first!

Leverkusen signing Emre can midfielder frm Bayern munich, does that mean Bender leaving, maybe to Arsenal?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Perhaps. But could also be wishful thinking. They could be just adding to their squad and have bender and emre as their central midfield pairing (a good one at that).

Some person came on here and said that the best draw for us in the champions league qualifier, would be Real Sociedad. He obviously does not watch spanish football.
They are a brilliant team, and one of the most up and coming teams in spain. I saw some of there games at the end of last season, and the first thing I thought of was I hope we don't get them in a qualifier.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He meant that the best team we might face real sociedad. meaning the worst draw we could get

Agree0 Disagree0

Not best draw, best team in the draw. He acknowledged they are a good team (As long as we are thinking of same post)
That said we should still be able to beat them.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think he said they are the hardest team we could play.

Agree0 Disagree0

Me?

Real Sociedad are the toughest draw we could get. Hands down!

Still think our current squad is well capable of beating comfortably. {Ed027's Note -

Eboue is a legend, hope he gets a huge reception at the Emirates! Still twists my gut that he got booed of the pitch by so called supporters. The guy always plays with the biggest smile on his face.

Scootsagooner

Believable0 Unbelievable0

A legendary personality I agree, but he was woeful at times. Slightly below average at the best of times.
He made a mockery of himself when he would get on his knees and pray to the ref not to book him etc.
No player deserves to be booed off unless its extreme circumstances, but I was jumping for joy when I found out that liability wouldn't be in an Arsenal top again.
That said when I went to Barca I was sining "We only come to see Eboue!"

don't pay too much attention to wenger's comments. I think he's playing mind games.

i have to agree with him though that we have a very good, young squad basis. however it's too thin and i'm sure wenger knows that. I think wenger wants to send a message to liverpool that we don't necessarily need to get suarez if the price isn't right. liverpool are in a strong position because other high profile strikers have already moved or won't be moving at all leaving us little options. wenger wants suarez but for 40m and he's trying to push the move through by saying liverpool have to either sell him for that or keep him. imo that's the right move to do. 40m is already a lot for a player like suarez and there isn't interest from elsewhere (yet). and if we won't sign suarez we could go for alexis sanchez who's more than capable.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think you make some good points Iceman and I agree with what you're saying.

But there is a risk - as you mentioned there isn't interest from elsewhere *yet*.

If RM find the money or if the bale deal collapses (looks unlikely but you never know), they will be for suarez like a shot and I'm sure Liverpool would be happy to do business with them.

If arsenal pay 50mil or whatever right now, I think they'll get their man.

The longer this goes on? Arsenal could well get suarez for perhaps around what they have bid now (but a little more I think), but I don't see Liverpool accepting it, so we could well lose out.

It's a gamble and I am not convinced there would be realistic alternative targets available right now.

(Sanchez is essentially winger isn't? Not a centre forward?).

see how it pans out.

All this talk of of forwards and Feillaini has been smoke for a double raid on Man City. Two players seemingly on the fringes of the squad with bags of experience to help the youth - which has been a mainstay of press conferences this summer is the youth to get big chances.

Fitting in with this is £11.5 million bid for Lescott and Barry - Barry would prefer to stay in the UK but has Napoli interested and Lescott wants Champions League football to stay in the frame for England. This deal will be done in the next few days. We will not get Feillaini or Ashley Williams as has been currently touted. The deal would have been done sooner stumbling block has been wages and contract length for Barry.

Suarez has been left out of the Liverpool squad photo so it clearly indicates something's going on don't be surprised if we sign him in the next few weeks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Did you imagine the team photo without suarez, I can't find it. On a different note it's a bit strange to see liverpool official website talk about a 33 year old captain as if he was the only player that can bring them success in the future, 1 or 2 years max left in his career : (

If you go to Getty images, you will see Suarez is definitely missing. Hmmmm I sense something big is about to happen!

Don't bet on a winger being signed, why do you think Wenger said Ryo is not going on loan this season. Gnabry started most of the games on the left on the Asia tour, which tells me them 2 will be fighting for that position. Unless Wenger keeps Poldi on the left

Here's a true and absolutely genuine fact. A couple of years ago there was a young feller at my boys school who was an ex pupil he was at the end of year presentation. He is a groundsman at the emirates and was voted I believe young groundsman of the year at some stage. Anyhow! He told me that the head groundsman at the Emirates had just left Arsenal to work at Real Madrid for £150,000 a year plus house/accomadation etc included. THE MORAL OF THIS STORY. We will sell anyone. Ha ha Absolute truth!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think you would "buy" a groundsman. It would just be like a normal job where the other team offer them a better wage and they hand in their notice to leave.

Agree0 Disagree0

That was about 3 years ago and his salary is in the region of €45,000 plus accommodation allowance

This has probably been asked before, but why is Alisher Usmanov viewed as such a pariah by the Arsenal board?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Because he is a pariah. Makes the owners of Man City and Chelsea look like decent respectable people by comparison.

Because he has money and he is ready to pay for top players.

people on the spurs page saying that andros townsend has asked to leave spurs because he doesn't see himself getting game time.

I seriously think arsenal should try for him, he is incredibly similar to arjen robben at his age, and I believe a few years down the line, he will be a top top winger. i'm amazed that despite his efforts at qpr, spurs wouldn't wanna keep him. would be a perfect replacement for bale.
