Can someone clear this up for me, After today I think its apparent we need some steel in the middle of the park, now the figures that have been touted for that sort of player ( Vidal, Carvalho, Khedira, Pogba ) are all up to 30m + my question is why would we pay anything near that for Khedira when in January he can sign a pre-contract and go for nothing, surely Real Madrid would consider a lesser offer then lose for nothing next summer?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

04 Aug 2014 00:46:25
A lot can change in a year. The amount of teams that want him would likely x10 as he is free. Plus how much would you save? Like they was 20m for him apparently. Ok so in January he is free. You telling me his agent won't want us to pay a huge signing on fee because he is free

Agree0 Disagree0

We could buy Khedira for £20m now and shore up the defensive midfielder role and be ready to go this season.

Or we could go back to our penny pinching ways and wait til January to try and agree a Bosman deal in July 2015. Oh wait. Now Bayern Munich have agreed a deal with him and were out of all competitions and the premier league by January.

Good thinking Batman!

Agree0 Disagree0

Greeny I agree if its 20m then that's cool, just media reports are stating 30m which I wouldn't go with!

well this time yesterday there were copious amounts of posts after a 5-1 win, a defeat and you an hear the tumble weed rolling across the road .

A huge positive is at the moment we have hardly shipped anyone out, the squad is so much bigger than last year .

Much to look forward to I feel

Yeah things aren't looking half bad, think letting Jenko go out on loan was still a bad move but the squads looking good.
But tbh it kinda always does until injuries start, would love to see Jack and Ramsey form a solid partnership

Agree0 Disagree0

He gave away a peno today for westham in their 2-0 loss,

didnt see the game though so harsh to judge him by that

To all of you who signed up for the fantasy league, or are in the process of figuring it out (Dags), thanks. We invited the fans from the top 6 clubs. It seems as if the Mancs didn't appreciate our invite and didn't even post Reet's invitation! I hope it was a sign of respect. It is a top 6 kinda thing!

Winner gets a dance with Ed002! (Dags if you won, it could be Jenny as long as she signs the papers!)

All jokes aside, Thanks again.

Marca reporting we have agreed a fee of €25m for Khedira, not to shabby if it's true.

I can't argue with you AW

"I think we were not at the level physically today. You could see basically Monaco were stronger, sharper. If you do not win the challenges in the middle of the park then you don’t win the game."

Let's get someone to win those challenges and free up the magicians to work their magic.

Positives:
* Alexis
* CHAMBERS
* Ramsey
* Chamberlain

Negatives:
* Arteta
* Giroud
* Monreal
* Flamini

Is that a fair enough evaluation of the weekend?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So like I say very little learned we didn't already know before the weekend started, Giroud will be our top scorer so its just a case of getting back in the swing after the world cup and Flamini Arteta and Monreal are squad players.
As for the top 4 you'd expect them all to look good because they are all very talented players

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 22:53:30
Not sure about Giroud being our top scorer this year. Wenger said today that Sanchez was much better playing as a striker than outwide, so hopefully he will start upfront! OX - Alexis - Walcott, would be deadly in my opinion! With Giroud being a very useful plan B.
And one of Arteta or Flamini will be our defensive midfielder unless we buy someone before the deadline so they're not squad players just yet!

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 19:49:33
I know its very early days, but if we get carvalho, then it will allow ramsey ozil wilshire ox walcot sancez cambell cazorla etc to go and do their thing, but I feel giroud is going to be the fly in the ointment in this team. He won't be quick enough in thought and movement to compliment them. I hope i'm wrong but I just don't see him cutting it. There will be balls threaded through and decisive passes wasted on him because he ain't mobile enough.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Steve if we have a CF that scores 20 + which is what we have then I am afraid failings are in the midfield with regards hitting the net, their return isn't good enough, Giroud is no Ian Wright or Henry but he gets 20 odd goals and numerous assists, the midfield for all the ball they have need to be better at shooting.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 20:20:42
Agree about Carvalho( or Spyder or Khedira) but not too sure about Giroud.

Would love to give him a chance and see how he gets on.

Remember, he scored 17 in first season and 22 in second, so he is improving, and his hold up play is good.

I think the jury will always be out on Olly.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 20:52:56
I think the modern game has changed that the man down the middle is your big heading winner man and your wingers are your pace. Seems to me anyway. And we must address the dm position. For me personally we can win the league with giroud up top. But we can't win the league with arteta dm

Agree0 Disagree0

I like your optimism guys on giroud but the truth Iis he is not top top quality. Just The prem look at the opposition and how many would swap giroud with us. Chelski costa nah, man city any one from three nah, man u vp nah. Liverpool sturridge I doubt it. The top euro teams, well we won't even go there. I just hope he proves me wrong, but I just don't see it.

Agree0 Disagree0

D16

Spot on mate, we have so many quick players who can run on to Giroud it is a made for Arsenal, if the ball breaks down that is when we struggle. Hence a top quality DM

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 18:45:03
Well some people who thought we would rule the world after yesterday might be left scratching their heads.

My thoughts haven't changed, our squad is bigger and better than last years but we need a DM desperately.

Those who Sanchez would score a hat trick every game need to re-visit that idea also, clearly a talent one we haven't seen for a while BUT as I have said he will need time without a doubt.

Those who think Sanogoggoggogog should replace Giroud, stop and think, Sanogo's goals from a combined 20 yards were tap in's even Bendtner would have had a hat trick yesterday, that is how poor Benfica were .

I always think this sort of result is a good thing it makes players work harder, next game M City we will have to be better.

No alarm bells from me, patience is needed with a new face or two.

I the goner who wasn't saying yesterdays wasn't a friendly will say today's is lol

A Friendly to get match fitness and sharpness .

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 18:58:24
Agree mate,

Its all about fitness.

Score is irrelevant.

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree mate, we are stronger than what seems like forever going into a season and one player short of a real crack at the title.
We all know gibbs he type of player we need and I'm sure Arsene knows it too, if its possible he'll do it and if not hey ho the title will be tough but top 3 a reasonable expectation.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure how gibbs got in on my reply ooops, he's always getting the blame for stuff he didn't do, sorry about that.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 18:27:02
Rightly as almost everybody here has pointed out. We badly need a proper dm! For me khedira fits perfectly into our style of play! COYG

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 18:12:55
watching the game today shows how weak we are, wenger really needs to add a big, strong dm to our team otherwise we are going to get bullied in the big games!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 17:16:06
Bump

Struggling to put Monaco away, brings a certain perspective to yesterdays one sided fixture.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

These are warm up games as is next Sunday, nothing should be read into them one way or the other for the season ahead.
Its all to easy to get over excited or depressed about results and performances that are worthless come the 16th of August.

Agree0 Disagree0

Exactly G62, doesn't mean a thing, it is about working on weaknesses, AW will know where ours is, as we all do

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 17:15:05
that half against monaco really showed how much we need a top DM, arteta seemed to be passed every time they got the ball and countered because we couldn't stop it.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 16:51:37
I have been extremely defensive about Giroud, Arteta and Wilshere but with recent signings and if we get Khedira, I feel they both should be sold. Wilshere has not developed and he tends to give the ball away too much.
Giroud is OK but he just hasn't got the pace this team needs, we would be much better putting a more atheletic striker upfront.
Areta is well past his day and last season it really showed, time to sell ASAP in my opinion.

Bring in Khedira as Arteta replacement, bering in Pogba or Vidal as replacement for Wilshere and bring in Falcao (unlikely) or Cavani as a replacement for Giroud. Obviously some of these players are very unlikely but you get the idea what kind of players we need.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 18:39:20
Nobody should bee sold this year but we do need first team replacements for Arteta + Giroud to make a winning side

Agree0 Disagree0

These games are a fitness finder only and apart from the fact that Sanogo can score goals we won't learn anything new from them about the players we already had.
Jack for me has never really been cost affective for the team as he has always given the opposition more chances when he loses the ball than he creates for us by using it well but this is his defining season so let's see where it ends and not judge him before it even starts

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 16:51:19
Giroud is making Sanogo look like Pele

We have been very lucky to see so many world class players under Wenger - Henry, Paddy, Freddie, Overmars, Petit, Pires, Sagna, Cesc.

But if I could bring one back, it would be one he did not buy - DB10! A DB10 that could fly!

Carvalho & Varane would round off the summer perfectly.

Reus/Draxler to be targeted next year.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 14:26:45
I think we can win the title with what we have but will always be swimming against the tide without a quality DMF player, Flamini and Arteta just don't cut it as premier league champions in that position.
As we stand I'd put us down as third most likely team to be champions come May, one player could make a massive difference to our chances

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 13:31:31
William Carvalho please AW followed by a good strong young centre back to play second fiddle to Kos & Per.

The less disruption to the back 4 as possible please - so one for the future.

Would still like Remy to come in on the cheap! Can never have enough attacking options nor pace.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with your first two lines but we don't need anymore attacking options we have that in abundance.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 14:11:31
Maybe I'm getting carried away but perhaps sanogo can be the back up striker we need. I think dm and cb need to be addressed before any strikers. We have alexis giroud sanago theo Campbell pod who can all play there. Whereas dm we have really arteta and flamini.

Agree0 Disagree0

+ Walcott and Podolski

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry missed the lower case, you are correct D16, we have plenty of options going forward, riches galore if you like, just need to tighten up infront of the back four

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 15:36:12
Exactly. And more than enough cover for the wings too. I honestly think we are one dm short of having a league winnable team. Obv need depth in defence tho. But that first choice dm is so important. I'm sure arsene see's that. Well I hope

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 18:56:49
If Giroud gets injured, we really don't have a like for like replacement. Not sure Ox, Theo, Pod etc are strikers. I like them as part of the attack but they are missing something.
Plus it's a long season and we need to rest and rotate to keep us active in the Cups and League.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 12:57:26
So obviously as an arsenal fan, players hair is always an important factor in becoming legends. So with that in mind, hector Bellerin what a lot of potential he has, could really pull an arteta with that barnet. Decent enough Ayer as well ;)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Bellerin looks excellent to me I was very impressed with him.

More scouting success IMO

03 Aug 2014 12:10:48
Hello fellow Gooners. One question I'd like to ask.

Am I the only one who thinks we need a better left back than Gibbs and Monreal?

Gibbs is out of position too often and Monreal is not much better. I don't say they are not good or will not become better but I think we lack experience and even more defensive discipline.

They are ok going forward but what they miss is the ability to put crosses into the box. Same problem we had (or maybe still have, depends on Debuchy's sklill) with Sagna. He had some games when he played some great crosses but the majority of time he hit the 1st defender or the ball went out of play.

What I think is, and it hurts to say, we never really replaced Cashley Cole. If we are honest he was great on both ends of the pitch. Clichy was not any better than Gibbs I think.

I cannot see Wenger signing another left back but just wanted to share my thoughts and looking forward to receiving your feedback.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 12:23:35
Completely agree mate.
Monreal hasn't been that good for us, his first 6 months were easily his best, I think personally he should be moved on.

Gibbs, has his moments of playing well, but he's too inconsistent, too injury prone and in honesty, isn't good enough to be our first choice.

I'd ideally like him to be second choice to a new LB, but as you say, I can't see Wenger buying a left back

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, but who would you replace them with realistically?

Agree0 Disagree0

LB is the least of our worries ( we don't have that many ) you can't have world cup winners in every position .

Agree0 Disagree0

Completely agree mate!

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 12:50:25
I must say I quite disagree on Gibbs. Really do rate the guy. But can see where your coming from. I do still think he is good enough for us. Maybe he gets caught too far forward at times because when we got him he was actually a left midfielder. On Monreal I really do not like him. And would like another lb to compete with Gibbs.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with you guys monreal is average at best and Gibbs is OK but going forward he needs to do better he Has the pace so he should be bombing forward more often his crossing isn't the best either we do need another lb but I think Wenger believes we can cope so I don't see another lb this season maybe a cb that could cover lb as well similar to tv5

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 14:01:59
I disagree on Gibbs. He's had a couple of interrupted seasons, but we've always looked better and more fluid in attack when he's there. He links the transition and attack. Arsene likes to overload attack on the LB and defence responsibilities on the RB. Gibbs is doing what he is told and the responsibility lies on the DM or the RB to form a back 3 when Gibbs goes upfield. We've seen that failure a few times, but it's not Gibbs fault. I rate him as an English international, solid defensively, underrated in attack because his strength is playing the ball on the deck, especially one twos, not crossing in the air. And he has great recovery

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 14:17:46
If I could choose I'd probably go for David Alaba. Young but experienced, down-on-earth-attitude / no scandals (known to me), good statistics and he is not even a World Cup winner :P.

Guess he'd fit in very well but sadly this is just whishful thinking. I do not say we really have to buy another left back but I still think left D is our weak link. To me the offensive midfield (as long as nobody leaves) is our least worries but that's how opinions differ. :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Gibbs could be more than good, but really needs better balance between attacking and pushing up In some of our biggest blow ups he left the back exposed, we are not playing bottom dwellers (read Spurs) every week.

Agree0 Disagree0

Really rate gibbs, however sometimes his attitude isn't what it should be. - tracking back. Once he's injured in a season never seems to recover till the next one.

monreal needs to be moved on definately,

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 16:26:15
You're wrong on Gibbs but right on Nacho, he is toilet.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 20:54:45
Gibbo is fine when fit but that's not often enough imo, Monreal is fine as back up to a quality LB who isn't injury prone, so together there a weak combo.
Its not desperate but ideally I think we could do with someone like Baines, sorry Ed0025

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2014 11:50:41
Wenger said he believed South American teams are stringer in 2 key positions CB and ST, if we sign a defender (which is very likely) I'm putting my money on another Latin American addition. Thoughts on who we could go for? I'd love Thigo Silva or Dante doubt we have a chance at either though.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

At the Emirates cup yesterday, initially I got a bit confused with the starting line up. Who was starting where? I guessed flamini was playing cb, the ox in the middle and Monreal and Gibbs on the left rotating the LB and LW positions. But at half time when our defence switched to the end in which I was sitting, I noticed Gibbs was at left back with monreal partnering chambers in the CB positions. That got me thinking. If tommy v leaves, will Wenger be signing a replacement, or is chambers in fact the 3rd choice cb, with monreal the 4th choice cb, in much the same was as Sagna was. Bellerin looked good, so cover for right back if there's an injury at cb and chambers is playing there. And at left back, worst case scenario flamini can play there if Gibbs is injured and monreal is required at centre back.
Not saying I hope any of this to be the case. I'd much prefer us to just buy a top quality cb if TV5 leaves, but in the scenario above, chambers would get more playing time which would make sense considering the big transfer fee.

I am making my way to the glorious Emirates Stadium today to see the conclusion of the fourth place trophy, er I mean the Emirates Cup!

Following a 5-1 smashing of Benfica yday, and Valencia and Monaco drawing, it's likely that Arsenal will lift another bit of silverware today. What with the FA cup in May, they're like London buses. You wait ages for one and then two come along at once!

Follow that up with the community shield against Man City and we head into the new season brimming with confidence and belief!

It is very important we don't take Palace for granted and "do a Villa" on opening day. The premiership will be tough to win and we can't afford many slip ups this season. Sanchez will be our talisman this season starting with 45mins of magic today!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Some excellent quotes coming out of Arsene Wenger following our demolition of Benfica yesterday.

Key points:

He's happy with his spending but will probably buy one or two more players. A CB and a DFM. I would love Varane over Hummels as this guy is a beast but could be played in rotation this season with a view to taking over from Mertesacker next season forming a French partnership with Koscielny. No sauce, just personal opinion/preference.

As for the DFM, my sauce about a month ago, which I posted about, is still sure the deal is ON and WILL happen before September 1st.

Another quote which I'm happy with is the fact that Joel Campbell will be playing for Arsenal this season. I'm pleased because he looks fast, lively and an eye for goal. He just gives us a different option upfront or on the wings. We have players covering all attacking positions twice over. Something we've lacked for a long time.

Finally, Wenger has pretty much come out and said that he was under massive financial constraints due to the Emirates stadium being built and that the last decade was the most sensitive and important of his entire career.

Hundreds and thousands of fans (myself included) grew frustrated with the lack of spending and so called ambition shown by figure head Wenger. Now the truth is out, we can see Wenger did everything humanly possible with the resources given and kept us competitive for long periods of the season.

The winds of change are sweeping through Arsenal and the only way is up this season. We will get bigger and bigger and stronger each year until we are the team to beat domestically and in Europe.

I for one, am very excited and look forward to this season with more hope and almost confidence than ever before!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why would Varane move from being first team at Madrid to rotation for us? He would also cost a insane amount.

1) google "premier league fantasy". It's not as fun as it sounds sorry. First link, click on it.

2) register for an account. All you have to do is give an email address and whatever password you prefer, along with your name and age etc. Once you go through all that you'll recieve an email.

3) open that email to activate your account

4) I don't remember if you have to make your team before you join a league. You can click on the leagues tab and click private league. Then type in the code for the league. It's somewhere on this page.

5 maybe) if you can't do 4, then just make your team first and then do it.

Well I'm off to the Emirates again today. I've got to say that I thought that Bellerin was quality and only 19 years old too.
A 19 year old defender playing like he does at a club like Arsenal! WOW! what a player he can turn out to be. His off ball movements are well in front if what you would expect a young player/defender to be like. I would like to see Wenger play him in a few Premiership games where the pressure is really on. Maybe the Palace game would be a good start for him. Loved him made a great impression. Sanchez well the quality was there to see if only 10 minutes of magic in total.
I don't think he will be given much time to think when the season starts. Our opponents will be sticking on him like glue or they will severely pay for it. Second top scorer at Barcelona last season and 6 of Messi's goals were penalties! now that's what I call a quality signing.
Come on you are all waiting for it aren't you?
WELL DONE SANOGO!
I had to laugh it really made me smile I was thinking about this site everytime the ball went in the net LOL. Good I hope he keeps it up especially the dance celebration after each goal I won't mention him falling over though LOL now that was funny too.
Campbell can grow into a beast of a player really would like to see him get his chance in the premiership. I hope Wenger slots him in. I understand from someone in the know yesterday that we are going to possibly bring in another player maybe 2 before the end of the window.
Guess what? Looks like we have got too many players!
Ha Ha! Come On Arsenal let's give it to them this season .!

Reading that we may be in for Guilovagui (Spelling?). Surely, he's not seen as 1st team material, however, as a backup (can play CB too) to someone like Khedira, who will be 28 by the end of next season, may be a very astute signing. How many players did AW say he may still be after again?
