So glad we added exactly what we needed in the Winter Window - a towering powerful CD and CDM rather than a lightweight, wishy washy midfielder. Wenger never addressed our main oroblem so I am over the moon Emery is buying exactly what we need and getting that gritty and tight defence we once had under GG. Well done Emery.

It sounds ridiculous but we need to teach our defenders the basics about defending from zonal responsibility for their position ie don't get drawn out of position ball chasing or ball watching and if you can't get back don't go forward/ take your breaks at the back ect.
Obviously they are not novices or children but they almost look like they are on many many occasions.
Get back to basics and text book defending both as individuals and as a unit.

So who would you have bought out of all the winter window transfers available players SY4?

Paddy - not my job to find the talent but Lichtsteiner was never going to solve a problem. Bit of a Silvestra signing. Torriera is a good signing but he isn’t going to be our CDM anchor. He should have been working on our weaknesses from day 1. Wenger turned a Rioche side into champions by adding what it required. Paddy and Anelka while clearing out unwanted players.
Emery inherited a strong attack but needed to add defensive order as well as a new spine with say Dacoure from Watford and may be Rugani / Gimenez / Suele or more realistic - Oxford, Coady or Chester
He then needed to train and drill the defence.
You can’t play without creativity and Ozil is key to that. Build a disciplined hard working defensive unit behind him and tell him to just run going forward. I am sure Laca and PEA would score lots of goals with Ozil in the hole behind them.
Our fullbacks get exposed so play 3 at the back and 4 in midfield. Two of which will be hard working defensive players. Either side of those Kola and Bellerin.
For me - 20m on the keeper wasn’t needed when other areas were a necessity and I don’t see Suarez as the solution in this window.
My main issue is - zero effective coaching on defence. Only solution is to remove creativity in midfield and still we can’t defend. Work effort is zero and pressing has dropped off.

The players looked confused yesterday SY that's for mate.

I suppose, that two 33 year olds and a 35 year old because of injuries in defence aren't an excuse either sy, or is that dicks plan?

Leno, koscelney, torreira, Gouendouzi, lacca well done, the rest, levels of not so well done to absolute sh*t.

Big name premier league players quite often fail as managers at smaller clubs in the championship and league 1 or 2 because they try and get players at those clubs who aren't up to playing at the level the manager is used to working at and who are incapable of achieving the managers ambitions in the style of play the manager would like.
You've simply got to know and accept the players you have at your disposal and find a way of playing they are capable of achieving for you.
Give Dick Spurs Liverpool or City players and he might be able to achieve his ambitions with his ideal style but with what he's inherited at Arsenal you've got to find a style that they can handle.
It's irrelevant now Why he inherited such a poor squad because that's in the past the only thing that mattes between now and the season ending is finding a compromise that works between what Dick wants and what the current players can deliver.

With fixtures like these, it wrong that I mostly just ask myself, by how much wire will lose. I feel like we’re a world away.

Agree Alex we are a long long way away but every journey begins with first step, it's a difficult but not impossible job, we need to find a way for these players to play.

Arsenalex, don't try and judge us against citeh, they are the current champions, have the best manager in the world and are three years into their project. We are no even out of the blocks in comparison.

G62, is it not better for dick to continue to play his way in order to see what players to keep and who to let go. If he is to change now then makes him look weak and his philosophy he's been trying to install into the team has to begin again in August . Players are still learning how to play his way and dick is still learning about this group of players. Some have improved. Dick needs a season to access what he has and what he hasn't.

Hi Paddy
When Pep took over city he brought in players to play his style so although it was a difficult first season the benefits were seen a year later when he only had to add here and there to perfect his plans.
Our players are not 50 million plus players and we won't be bringing in 50 million plus players either to play Dicks preferred way.
Horses for courses in my opinion mate and it's no good asking people to do what they simply aren't upto doing, some people are decent backing singers but just not upto being lead vocalists is the easiest way I see it.
This pretty playing out from the back isn't brilliant if you have the players to do it but if you don't your always going to come undone as often as not.

03 Feb 2019 23:22:19
Pep continued to play his way the first year he went to city even though he hadn't the players. It wasn't until his 2nd season he brought in the 50m fullbacks and a keeper. The difficulty for dick is he has less to work with than pep had when he first arrived to city.
My point is dick needs time and he needs players to suit his style but for now he has to make do with what he has.

I agree paddy, its dicks way or get out because you aren't capable. Its obvious that in the summer, there are players in this squad who Dick will wave bye bye because of what he has seen this season. The fly in the ointment will be Ozil, the biggest scar from the previous regime. How we/ he deals with him is any ones guess. Ozil, mustaffi, xhaka and iwobi for different reasons are a massive problem to our future. The defence will get a massive overhaul, just because monreal, jenko and lich will need replacing just for starters. But ozil is strangling us going forward.

Lucky for Ozil he didn't play today otherwise it would have been his fault and his alone all day long.

I think City were quite lethargic today and certainly didn't seem to share Peps pre match battle cry to send out a message to thier rivals in the title race, they seemed happy to go through the motions and Just come away with the points.
For us we obviously have a long long way to go, pretty much as far away as ever.

Away to a team we finished 36 points behind in the league, with a patched up defence, defence in loose terms, highest goalscorers in the league, i didn't really expect anything else. At least we don't play citeh again this season. I thought we got our tactics wrong, should have played with three goalkeepers and 8 forwards, that would have confused them. Feb is a good month to get some momentum going now for us and watch others play citeh. We need soc back and AMN (even jenko) in liches place but we must not play lich mustaffi or iwobi again, if we do we are in trouble. Feb has to now be a good month for injuries and results and then we can see where we are at.

Iwobi is a decent squad player and can be very effective coming onto the pitch as a sub in the second half when his legs are fresher than the opponents. I hate the idea of him starting matches though. Tough to argue about Lichtsteiner and especially Mustafi—-to me he should be the first one out the door in the summer.

Hello ed001, would you be able to write a piece of your opinion on Guendouzi please? I think he's class.

{Ed001's Note - I have added him to the list for a player profile for you mate.}

The only player from either side not to give a ball away. Looked the best player on the pitch first half, world class in the making.

Guendouzi has been excellent and is doing all he can to cover everyone he possibly can, he playing left back as much as doing his own job in cmf. He should partner Torreira for the rest of the premier league season.

Level :-) now sort it out because we look totally disorganised like under 10s just starting out on a fill size pitch for the first time.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Feb 2019 16:47:32
Why don't we have any fullbacks on both wings City have players totally unmarked, Guendouzi is trying to fill in at left back out of desperation.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Feb 2019 17:19:45
Totally unmarked player on our right flank provides the service for the totally unmarked Aguero to score at our back post, it does make you wonder what happens on the training pitch all week every week and why we concede so many tap ins to unmarked players.

03 Feb 2019 17:22:11
Lich and iwobi have been absolutely appalling first half.

03 Feb 2019 17:25:11
Lichtsteiner is clueless.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Feb 2019 17:39:15
Right at the start of the second half there it is, City player totally unmarked on the right well inside the box but only City's poor final ball spared us, and Guendouzi collects and carries the ball out of trouble once again.
School boy ball watching and unaware of what's going on from our defence, as we've got used to seeing both under Arsene and now Emery, it's so frustrating to see.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Feb 2019 21:26:54
It’s ok 62 as it’s not Emery’s fault as he’s only had the squad 6 months and it’s Wenger fault. :)

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Feb 2019 23:42:16
You are so right sy, it is wengers fault and it will take major surgery to sort the rubbish he left behind, that's obvious. The guy with his mate gazidis have done a right job on us.

03 Feb 2019 16:30:43
My least favoured formation, especially with Mustafi and Liechsteiner on the team sheet. These are the games you want Ramsey and a productive Ozil in the side. negative I know, but this shoes the inadequacy of the last month's efforts.

However. COYG.

Pep playing everyone upfront, he really wants to win today lol.

03 Feb 2019 15:54:43
Perhaps Emery is torn also - looks like he’s going for a counter attacking game with PEA and Laca left to survive off scraps with NO Suárez, Rambo or Ozil! Hopefully our new defencive core from the last windo will help keep a clean sheet. Oh, wait - we only signed a young winger! Is Wenger controlling signings still?

Starting XI: Leno, Lichtsteiner, Kolasinac, Koscienly, Mustafi, Monreal, Torreira, Guendouzi, Iwobi, Aubameyang, Lacazette

Not excited about defence, midfield or attack or keeper.

Let’s hope for a draw.

I don't know the in and outs of Swansea troubles but I do know they have enjoyed a fantastic ride that for a club they're size and it was always going to be near impossible to maintain indefinitely.
If you exclude the big 7 then which current premier league team hasn't expreiced the highs of promotion and the lows of relegation on a pretty regular basis?
Stoke came up under Tony Pulis and enjoyed a prolonged premier league stay but it was inevitable they would be relegated again at some point as it is for Wolves Brighton Burnley and Southampton who will all more likely then not be relegated at some point in the next decade, and quite like promoted again too.
Like I say I don't understand the ins and outs at Swansea but I'd have thought after the brilliant period they've enjoyed together those who played a huge part in the good times might have earned 2 seasons of loyalty.
Arsenal are a prime example of letting loyalty through past achievement go way way too far but I'd have thought 2 seasons weren't an unreasonable period to give someone who'd previously done so well for the club.
