I read somewhere that spurs have lodged a bid of 29mil for Icardi.
How bad could it get for us?
Waiting till we lose all our targets and then have the boss tell us that there are/ were no strikers.
Oh and to those who say it's early, if we spurn our chances now, we might not have any again. This has always been the way the club leaves us heartbroken during transfer windows. Somewhat a routine.

If we don't sign them they aren't arsenal quality and are no better than what we have, don't worry we know what we are doing, we are in good hands. Yeah right.

Yep he did go missing which is why we need extra fire power he still scored 20+ again.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2016 21:59:47
He won't score 20 premier league goals and that's the problem, he's 13 to 16 prem goals a season striker in a team that makes the most quality chances.

Agree3 Disagree0

04 Jul 2016 10:13:13
16 in 26 is a pretty good return I agree we need a 30 goal a season man . Trouble is those players are 40,000,000 +, so forget Wenger getting one of those, which is why we have what we have, for this coming season

Maybe people like Ox, Walcott and Ramsey should score more?

Or else then Steve .

There is no way Wenger is going to splash out 35-40 million on another player after already spending 30million.

Now that Lacazette is staying at Lyon, only Aubamayang or Morata will suffice.

{Ed002's Note - It will be a long summer for you.}

03 Jul 2016 21:22:45
I do think wenger expects to offload a midfielder, either wilshire ramsay, walcott, coq or chamberlain to raise some cash or something. i'm gobsmacked if his masterplan was xhaka and vardy, leaving peanuts for a center back. And now peanuts really for a striker. I did say at the time vardy was a bargain at 20 mil because 20 mil won't normally now get you a striker of quality, you need 40mil+. If wenger has blown the majority of his budget on xhaka then he really doesn't understand our problems, there must be more money coming from somewhere.

Agree2 Disagree0

03 Jul 2016 21:27:31
Good post Steve and fair points . As you save Wenger normally raises cash from sales doesn't look to be the case this summer, does it?

I'm amazed we splashed out on a midfielder, so who will he drop?

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2016 22:26:33
I think we might get more cash from sales than we want as I've a feeling Mesut won't be an Arsenal player next season.
He said in the interview he gave before the West Ham game last season " I don't need a new contract because I have 2 years remaining on my current deal and while I'm happy at Arsenal you never know with football what might happen '
Personally I think he'd already decided he wasn't up for more of the same at that point and only by us showing real ambition this summer was he going to stick around.
Time will tell as always I guess.

Most of you guys just whine and winge about everything, its quite pathetic at times.

when xhaka deal was done - it was classed as a great signing, now not so much we have to deal with the fact in terms of pulling power in EPL, Were not that big of a draw with man u and there rich history, man cities oil money, same for chelsea, liverpool have a rich history, toottenham have been improving as well a west ham, why would you pick arsenal?

p. s don't mean to offend anyone and i'm a die hard gooner win or lose, wenger or no wenger.

Don't shoot me guys but what about RVP on 1 or 2 year deal, heard that he is not happy in Turkey and wants to move to London . Will definitely score more goals that Giroud if he remains fit . If Manchester United can sign 34 years old Zlatan why not a 32 year old RVP.

No one can seriously think Arsene will want another 3 year's of trying to explain why we didn't put in a challenge at home or in the champions league if we fail again in the season ahead.
Of course it's possible he's in discussions over a new 3 year deal but I find it extremely difficult to think he or the club would want to look beyond next season at this point as everyone knows our usual top 4 finish without troubling the champions and champions league last 16 exit will mors than ever go down like a lead balloon.

I can see why your fans go mad at the arsenal board, Utd Chelsea, city, Liverpool are buying top quality and your owners go for the cheap and make money deals, even spurs owners are in Italy right now talking to icardi for 38 million, you are one of the richest clubs in England but must also be one of tightest clubs also.

Agree5 Disagree0

03 Jul 2016 17:48:45
Guys. It's early days yet and people are blowing their nut like the windows closed. If we don't buy serious players in this window than blow as much as you like! God knows what's happening but I have a list of players in my head that would satisfy me and I'm sure most people have players in mind. Part of a managers job in my opinion is to satisfy its fan base and although buying these players could prove costly and potentially a complete waste of money (Torres, veron) the fans would be happy and at worse curse bad luck instead of turning against the club and each other. Wenger needs to think long and hard and I'm sure he is. He also wants to think about having some success in his last year and not go out on a whimper. If he or anyone else in the club think that the squad as is can win the league let alone the CL then they are seriously deluded.

I bet everyone thought the same when we signed Kolo, Anelka etc for peanuts or when Leicester City signed Riyad Mahrez from French second-tier side Le Havre.

I am not saying the guys a star but Wenger has said he is one for the future - don't let Raver wind you up,

So we play liverpool on the opening day of the season and that scares me a little as a loss could have a bad effect on our players. We are not just playing any team but one of the big teams in the league and our journey to win the league would have begin with a win. If we lose, we'll have the team spirit a bit dwindled, y'know the camaraderie stuff. And our boys will start to think, "this is happening again, 4th place race". Meanwhile we are supposed to see ourselves as a "winning team", not just a top four team. A team who would want to lift the trophy come end of season, because that's what we deserve.
But the question is, how are we preparing towards that? towards the big season? Honestly, not only do the teams scare me, it's the managers who handle those teams, and that scares me a lot.
I am not going to settle for 3rd, not even 2nd. We are tired of being written off, we deserve to be respected. This is the time where we all (fans, players, coach and every single staff) must unite and fight to WIN. COYG!

03 Jul 2016 12:22:55
I totally understand people's mistrust of Arsene and the club and the serious doubts we will strengthen this summer enough to challenge yet again.
Personally I think the penny has dropped and both the club and Arsene know that another slow or pedestrian summer followed by another season of no title contention will be met with more and more and louder and louder discontent and demonstrations. All those empty seats against WBA visibly shocked Arsene and even the half hearted protests which were more of a whimper than an outcry on the day didn't go by without notice.
Let's wait until the season kicks off at least before we write this season off as yet another terrible under achievement by a club and manager who see £s as success and competitiveness as a bonus, I think this summer is and will be different why? The genuine attempt to sign Vardy appossed to last summer's embarrassment of an attempt to sign a player who had absolutely no interest in joining us, Vardy may not have come off but he was a realistic target we did all we could to get and for me that encouraging and a reason to wait and see what happens between now and kick off of the 2016/ 17 season before getting to upset about things.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

03 Jul 2016 13:13:56
The Vardy thing just seemed as though Arsenal were dragged into his cynical and succesful attempt to get a better pay deal to see out his career with at Leiceser.
The Benzema saga was the same too I feel. Suarez? Perhaps he just wanted a guaranteed Barcelona move.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2016 14:02:37
I disagree mate for me
Arsenal and Benzema was a joke from start to finish we never expected him to come bit used the story to keep the fans quite
Suarez and £1 bid? As if that was going to activate a clause that wasn't worth the paper it was written on
But Vardy? We bid the asking price no messing about but he was torn and in the end stayed where he and his family were happy,
The Vardy bid was a genuine attempt imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2016 17:58:07
To put the bid in two days before he flew to the Euro's suggests it was half hearted . It was a ridiculous decision to leave it that late .

It smacks of kidology.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2016 18:29:15
Possibly Banbury but we had an actual bid accepted by Leicester and we actually sat down with Vardy and made him an actual offer that he went wawy to think about, compared to how close we ever came to Higuzemahimovic Vardy is an Arsenal leggend and must be in line for a statue at some point :-)

A quick look at today's rumours -
Arsenal sign Asano!
Chelsea to beat Arsenal to Koulibaly
Wenger to be offered a 3 year extension.
Mkhitaryan confirmed to Man U.

Talk about Groundhog Day.

We have lost the league and it is only July 2.

My choices are - get another club to follow or shoot myself.

Tlak.

Believable2 Unbelievable3

03 Jul 2016 11:48:04
I wouldn't have one in the chamber just yet mate!

The clubs statement on Asano describes him as 'one for the future' so I wouldn't be worried he's our last bit of buisness.

Did we ever really want Koulibaly?
Interest and signing are two different things.
I'm interested in Natalie Dormer, but I can't see her signing the marriage license.

A lot of people seem to believe Arsene will leave at the end of his current deal.
I think he even said it himself. (Don't quote me on that! )
However, if he does agree a new deal, I wouldn't be too annoyed, throwing £30m at a young midfielder with only 2 full years of top flight experience shows desire, if that trend continues, then we can say we actually tried to improve and I for one can't fault that.
However, if Xhaka and Asano are our only signings, I've already mentioned the old pitchfork.

As far as Mkhitaryan goes, I'm pretty gutted too, to be fair.
If we did actually want him, it's disappointing we couldn't cross the line.
However.
His agent is also Zlatan's.
I think Jose and Raiola (spelling) have history too, so I'd imagine as soon as Utd were in the frame, there were a few words being whispered in his ear.
Not to mention he apparently wanted £200k a week, which we just aren't going to pay, even Mesut doesn't earn that much.

We've still got over a month till the first ball is kicked in the prem and almost 2 months till the closing of the window, remain positive people!
I'm personally going to expect a big deal right up till the moment Jim White tells me the window is closed.

Once the euro's have concluded and everyone's on their holidays/ back at their respective clubs, I'm sure the majority of deals will begin to happen

(that's my current excuse, when the euro's end and players still aren't signing, check back with me then and I'll think of another! )

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Jul 2016 12:43:22
Arsene won't be signing another contract any time soon that's for sure and rumours of him doing so are designed to get fans attention nothing more.

Agree1 Disagree1

03 Jul 2016 11:12:38
While every other team is preparing towards kick off, arsenal being arsenal get linked with all sort of strikers in the world again and again without placing a serious bid.
Arsenal will drag their feet and wait till all the top strikers are mopped up by other teams and then say there are no top strikers available or they are too pricy.
Even that with the Asano guy hasn't been pulled off yet.
Well my mind tells me if arsenal need a particular player, they go all out for him, like Sanchez, Ozil, Xhaka just to mention a few. Maybe like every other window, this is the same old delay tactics being played here.
There are decent strikers out there who are within the club's bidding range so we could try at least by bidding for them. Bacca, Chicarito, Icardi, Reus, El Shaarawy, Remy, Deeney and others.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Jul 2016 12:08:42
Thing is mate, that's the exact problem.
I've mentioned it a few times in my replies too, EVERYONE, knows Arsenal want/ need a striker.

The fans know it.
The club know it.
The selling parties know it.
But worst of all, the media know it.

Arsenal have a massive online following, especially on the likes of Twitter.
We're something like the 2nd or 3rd most followed club in the world.
At one point, a couple of our players had more followers than the Spurs account.

So what's an easy way to get your paper/ website/ gossip rag/ attention hungry teenager/ attention hungry Colombian 'news' reporter, the views/ clicks they want?
Link Arsenal to a striker.
Right now, if you put 'Arsenal Rumours' into Google, apart from this glorious website, the first options you see are;

Arsenal to offer Wenger new deal
Lacazette rumour
Higauin rumour
Benzema finally joining rumour
Ramsey to United
Striker explains Arsenal snub
Journalist says Arsenal target Barbosa has joined top English team for £15m

You get my drift?
5 of the top 7 are about different strikers we want.
So people see this and desperately cling to the link in hope we're about to announce a triple swoop for Benzema/ Higauin/ Barbosa and play a 2-3-5 formation with those 3 up top, flanked by Alexis and Ozil.
I'm guilty of it too and I'm the guy arguing against it!

I think Sanchez and Özil were special cases too, both players clubs wanted to sell them.
Barca because they'd bought Suarez (don't forget, I believe we actually wanted Pedro, but settled for Alexis when Barcelona wouldn't sell! ) and Özil because Madrid had bought James for No10.
Whereas the strikers we want, people also want/ want to keep.

As for the strikers you've listed, I'd love Chicharito, I think he's perfect, great finisher, fast, makes good runs and would link with Özil superbly.

Icardi too, he's young, but he's a good finisher, he's already (or was) inter's captain, so he's a leader and he's got a bit of an attitude, which you need in a striker at times.

As for the rest, I'm not so sure,
Bacca's 30, had a good season at AC, but I'm not so sure he'd suit our style, plus would they want to sell?
Balotelli is back at Liverpool and Luiz Adriano didn't work out, so isn't he their only forward?

Reus I do like, but he's not a striker, plus seems to have injury niggles and Dortmund would want a bomb for him.

El sharawaay, i like too, but Milan wanted him gone, didn't cut the mustard at Monaco and he's doing ok at Roma now, I don't see it.

Deeney, is he really better than Giroud?

Remy, hello Dags of 2013/ 14

I'd like to throw Gaimero into that list though!
I think he's got all the right attributes to succeed here too.

Now, that list I've just gone through, it honestly isn't me trying to be all 'My opinion is better than yours' or trying to rain on your parade, if it comes across like that, i do apologise!

I was trying to make a point though, that we're so desperate as a fan base to sign a striker, we'd link a 36 year old Henry with the club rather than stick with Giroud and that's what the media capitalise on, thus the cycle continues.

Because tomorrow. Lacazette will personally announce he's staying for another year.
So the media will say 'Arsenal fail in French goal machine pursuit'
So we'll click the link.
And the day after, that same paper will of got 'insider info' that we're close to signing Eder from inter Milan.

And the cycle of despair continues.

Agree1 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - Ozil was sold to finance the Bale deal and Sanchez was very much Wenger's chosen player, not Pedro. He left because Messi did not like him, not because of Suarez or anyone else. Barca had wanted to move him on for a while but he was keen to try and make it there so stayed initially.}

Ok let's see how this sits with everyone.
Just been reading that Arsenal has around £51 million in cash to spend on players in 2016.
That is, if they tap into there £50 million overdraft. ( came from Arsenal financial reports which are public )
If that is true! After buying Xhaka for around £30 million Arsenal have probably only another £20 million to be able to spend comfortably. Now! I'm no financial expert I'm only relaying some figures from
CORRI SARRI STATHAM Investments which are available for anyone to read.
If this is correct? and I have no reason to believe otherwise, it certainly puts the lid on any massive signings happening for this season.

Arsenal is different. very different
*Arsenal Holdings (ISDX:AFC) reported weak interim results, with net loss of £3.4m. Partly this was attributable to negligible profits from player sales £0.3m v £26.7m (H1 2015) . The board gave a cautious outlook mentioning the uplift in revenues from the Premier League broadcasting but higher costs in the form of inflationary wage pressures and transfer prices.
*Due to the structural issues identified below, our view is Arsenal is not investable for the general public, the fact its ISDX quotation has survived is anomalous.
*Revenue growth to end May 2016 is seen as muted given no change in gate/ match day income and the drop off in property development/ player trading. Our forecast is for revenue growth of 2% in FY2016 to £351.5m.
*The heavy investment in players has already hit cash levels quite hard. We expect a £44.4m spend on player registrations over FY16. In our forecast for FY16 we anticipate a net profit of £3m.
*Arsenal has significant levels of cash but net levels are far lower limiting the club’s spending – we estimate Arsenal has around £54m of cash that could be deployed on new players (assuming the board tap the £50m overdraft facility) .
Structural issues.
“Spend more money on players” is an often heard criticism of Arsène Wenger and of the
Research
Arsenal board of directors who include Sir Chips Keswick and majority shareholder Stan Kroenke. Fans tend to have a shortRterpmoforctu:s, understandably.
Since Mr Wenger was appointed in 1996, Arsenal has been transformed from reliance on gate receipts to diverse income streams. Arsenal has rapidly grown broadcasting, commercial and retail revenues. Widely credited for cultivating talent internally rather than throwing money at the transfer market, Wenger has demonstrated a financial acumen lacking in the premier league. Numerous club rescues has amply demonstrated the pitfalls of the sector’s profligacy. Since Mr Wenger’s appointment the Arsenal share price has jumped a staggering 40 fold from £400 to £16000 per share. This is a highly commendable achievement.
Fan criticism tends to ignore the significant “structural issues” at Arsenal notably that it is essentially a controlled subsidiary. Stan Kroenke’s KSE UK Limited holds 66.8% of Arsenals 62,217 shares whilst Alisher Usmanov holds 30.05% – the listed shares are a tiny minority interest. Relations between shareholders are reported to be limited. Mr Usmanov has left the board and KSE UK to their own devices. Shareholders are treated differently, KSE receives a £3m annual payment but shareholders receive zero dividend. Player spending decisions are in the hands of the board which include KSE representatives.
By remaining on the ISDX (ICAP Securities and Derivatives Exchange) Arsenal is subject to relaxed corporate governance standards. Kroenke is under no pressure to take full 100% control nor split Arsenal shares. He is required under takeover rules to buyout other holders if his stake hit 75%. This does not appear to be Kroenke’s short term plan however especially as Mr Usmanov appears happy with the status quo. The quote as such is extremely illiquid and given the current ownership structure unlikely to change.

We need to shake off our reputation of being a club with top 4 only aspirations.

Disappointed we didn't sign Mkhitaryan, but was hoping we could sign Lacazette, to soften the blow.
Oh well.

As Piers Morgan said, "Utd sign Zlatan, we can't even sign Vardy".

Wenger and kronke have turned this club into a wasteland and footballers with ambition will not come. Big changes needed, we don't look attractive to top players.

Those changes aren't happening this year Steve, it looks same old same old I'm afraid

I don't see this ' super striker ' coming at all.

What I don't get is why buy another midfielder?

I wouldn't read too much into that mate, a week ago, Mkhitaryan was 'going nowhere'.
Now he's off to Utd and Dortmund are throwing some serious bitchiness at them on social media (check out their statement regarding him leaving if you haven't Its great)

That said, I hear Lyon are incredibly difficult to deal with and I'm pretty sure ed said they'll look to inflate the price for an English club too, so it was probably a no go from the off!

Im still holding out hope for that big striker, but now I'm starting to wonder where they'll come from, I can't see us paying the massive fee's being bounced around the Internet for Lukaku or Higauin and to tell you the truth, other than Icardi (if we pull our fingers out) the potential striker market is still really bad, they're so few and far between that if you want one these days, it's a sellers market and you have to pay the premium, which, we won't.

My heart is still holding out for Arsene to do a madness and throw a blank cheque at Napoli/ BVB/ Real and get us Higuain, Auba or Morata, but my head tells me to look forward to a new defender or midfielder.
There's also my usual cynic side explaining to me how Welbeck, Wilshere and Cazorla are basically new signings.

Banbury and Steve - I have said all along our business model needs to change and you keep saying the manager needs to change.
We would be screwed without Wenger. Player and real estate funds have kept our great club a float. Yes we have wasted wages on players like NB52 but overall Wenger has run a great ship on funds available and the business model he is restricted by. But he got on with it for the greater good and took his lumps and bumps from the media and fans.
Now we have better commercial deals and a better portion of money from non football activities.
The benefit of these will be coming in shortly but that doesn't mean we have always had 200m in money to spend. That would need a sugar daddy or a change in debt:equity philosophy etc
The accounts have always stated this despite what the garbage press state.
Cash position is always over stated by season ticket sales, vat due, PAYE, Corp tax, wages in the summer, other creditors.
Seriously - do you not think Wenger would not spend if the money was there? Look at his early record and player comments. We strengthened every season. Why would that change unless forced. Why would he want to loose? He's a terrible looser. Yes money was there but once spent how would it be replaced for future signings without sales
We have to accept that he did a great job with his hands tied behind his back while crazy money came to Chelsea and City. Without those clubs - how would we have done? They distort the market place and steal our targets while driving up the price if players. Eg Hazzard
The report is scary and hopefully we spend more money as we need a few players. Given that you pay for players over a period of time - hopefully we can leverage our future earnings plus utilise our cash to make us all happy. X.

Good post SY but spending big and over budget this window to keep us in contention won't kill us and set us up for a few seasons, we will soon get the money back, it's difficult to get world class players with us competing in the CL wait until we are out of the top four, Chelsea and Man U will be real contenders this season, it will be a very tough test this season, maybe our toughest yet.

Filthy language.

Agree banbury with a lot you are saying. Sy our manager has lost his shine and our owner is only interested in the worth of the shares. that's why we need a change. Why did we spend 30 on a midfielder when we really needed a striker or defender more.

Santi at end of career, Arteta gone, Flamini gone., .

Don't we need a decent CDM?

Santi not at end of career, far from it, bought elneny, coq, wilshire, ramsay, were fighting for central midfield two places with youth back up further down the line, bielik, crowley etc. Where is our 25 goal striker and our number two center back.

I reckon my Nan can take better pen's than that lot.

Note to Wenger. Strike Ozil off pen duties.

If nothing else you've got to give props to Mesut!
Missed 4 of his last 5 penno's for club and country and still steps up to take one. which he subsequently missed, but still.
He has great mental strength, to quote Arsene!
