Wenger has taken huge amounts of stick over the years. He had his hands tied behind his back, due to stadium move and financial restrictions placed on him but, although no silverware, he still managed to achieve top 4 and the financial reward of CL football.

I still maintain, no manager could have done what he did, even Fergie.

During those difficult years, he was touted by all the big clubs, including RM and PSG, but he stayed true to his own values and moral standing, and committed himself to Arsenal Football Club.

The man deserves the utmost respect.

04 Aug 2015 23:44:36
Agreed - he may love Arsenal more than us!

Love the guy and what he's done for the club plus his openness for change of late

Now go sign a striker, cdm and and exciting winger!

He is a very clever and underrated manager by far our best 1 and I dread the day he leaves I'm 30 now and he as been there most of my life so I spose I wouldn't be use to arsenal under any 1 else

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2015 02:15:15
Wengers hands weren't tied he did everything by choice. I do catch your drift though dags. He's a great man. But fergie did everything he single handedly made United huge.

Awesome Arsene Wenger...
I can't recall the last time we entered a new season feeling so positive.
Hopefully we will make the one or two signings Wenger mentioned he is looking to do and then we will have a formidable squad.
Assuming the fans stay with him, I could envisage Wenger remaining at the helm into his mid-70's. Amazing manager who has elevated the club to a position just behind the very top European clubs and we may only be a couple of seasons short of joining the likes of Barca, Real, Juventus & Bayern.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2015 08:24:14
The pluses outweigh the negatives by a,million miles The beautiful football, the trophies, the stadium and of course the invincibles.
We owe Arsene big style, if only he hadn't been so stubborn for so long on a few things he may well be the undisputed best managed this country has ever seen rather than undisputedly our greatest manager ever

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2015 08:31:48
It never ceases to amaze me that Arsenal fans still have no perception of what Wenger achieved under the circumstances that he did it.

We can only imagine had he been able to add to the invincibles, instead of having them taken away, what he would have truly achieved between then and now.

A certain Mr Ferguson certainly wouldn't have had such a glowing CV.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2015 09:50:26
Fergie did do it without the money, before United. He took Aberdeen to European Glory. Wenger is without a doubt one of the best Managers in English football history but he will forever have that missing trophy on his record.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - actually Aberdeen benefited from North Sea money in Fergie's time. They were comparatively big spenders.}

05 Aug 2015 10:55:28
Comparative with who Ed? Their European competitors? I think not.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I would suggest not thinking then, as they did spend a comparatively large amount in any terms. They were spending as much as their competitors. That is not to say he did a bad job, he did a great job, but he was not hampered by money.}

05 Aug 2015 11:15:59
Over the same period (from 78-83) as Munich who they beat in the final they spent around 1/5 of the amount Munich had spent. That's not comparatively large at all. I'll happily list the players and prices where possible if you like?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - if you say so, but you are forgetting the difference in wages required and signing fees to attract players to Aberdeen. This is why we don't talk finances as fans only ever see a tiny portion of reality. Can you list wages, payouts given to departing players, signing fees, bonuses, staff wages, spending on infrastructure etc to show how little Aberdeen spent? }

05 Aug 2015 11:37:15
Obviously not but pulling on the same thread you can't do the same to show how much they spent. It's a bit of a pointless debate really. I was merely pointing out you can't use Fergie's spending as an excuse for his success, he is clearly ahead of Wenger as a manager and not solely down to money.

Mad Mario or the Ego has landed Ibrohimovic, neither exactly humble or shy and reserved. Ibrohimovic 33 and comes at £30000000000 per milisecond and would certainly consider us and our players extremely lucky to be in the same country at the same time as him, Balotelli 24 been extremly stupid and made many many mistakes but could he yet become the star he could and should have been already by now?
Dags come on mate you have to admit it's starting to make sense now, isn't it? :-)

05 Aug 2015 08:38:22
Balotelli has been pie'd off more times than a circus clown and is about to be again, it's like the manager has told him all week what he wants him to do but then he just runs onto the pitch and does anything but that.

The guy is a proper bowel nugget who should never have the privilege to wear the shirt of any top club ever again.

If I remember, Wenger only bought Welbeck because Giroud was injured. Now Giroud is not injured, nor is Walcott and we still have Welbeck as well as adding Sanchez.

More chance of having lunch on the moon than seeing another striker come in.

With regards to Danny Welbeck - it's worth remembering that Ian Wright had only a handful of games before his mid 20's and made little real impact on the game unyil his late twenties.
To expect DW to be the finished article with very little real experience yet is a bit much.

I think he looked pretty good when playing right at the front and a year or so more experience could see him develop well as he has basic attributes that give him a big edge - pace power and size.

Would like to keep him as cover for OG (unless we do in fact buy a real superstar striker)

Believable1 Unbelievable0

04 Aug 2015 20:33:54
Compared to Benteke 32 million Danny at 16 million is a real bargin buy, he never gives less than his all isn't a spot of bother and showed his total 100% commitment to Arsenal by celebrating scoring the winning goal at old Trafford last season without hesitation.
I'm pleased we've got him in our squad and who knows he could very well do this season what Harry Kane did last season because let's face August 2014 few people rated Kane better than Southendtastic.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Aug 2015 22:00:15
Given choice last year I'd of got bony for 20mill or benteke for 25mill
Welbeck I don't rate that highly

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Aug 2015 23:02:12
I don't rate Welbeck that highly, presently, but I do believe he has the potential to become a top striker in the league if given the time and experience to continue developing, he already has a handful of qualities anyone woukd want in a striker. Technically he is a very good player, decent first touch, calm on the ball, and loves to drive forward with the ball and get in the opponents faces. His finish is somewhat lacking but I remember a few years ago we were saying that Theo couldn't finish his dinner, and he turned alright. I'm willing to be patient with him.

His goalscoring record for England speaks for itself, you don't get 14 in 33 international appearances without having something about you.

05 Aug 2015 00:03:26
I like dw gives his all every game he come good

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2015 08:11:14
Yup, he does give his all and he's a great lad. Sadly he tends to fall over a lot and rush his decision making. He's great as a squad player and I would have kept him as that

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2015 08:12:52

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2015 10:35:58
We have to give Welbeck a fair chance to show what he can do, i rememember Bobby Pires had a really stinker of a first season, and a lot of fans said they didn't rate him. i'm not say Danny is going to be as good as Pires, but let's give the lad a proper injury free season and let's judge him then. I think he will come good.

The difference Stephen, in my opinion, is simple. When you are the 3rd best in Spain, picking up 3 points against 4th - 20th is easier, when you are in a similar situation in England it is much harder.

What about Danny Welbeck?

Looking at whoscored.com, he was our 10th best player last season and 3rd best forward. That's not too bad and there are many things to like in him; he's a hard worker, he's fast and he has surprisingly good technique. As a 24 year-old he's still relatively young and now that he has had a season with us he's more accustomed to our playing style. So we should expect him to improve this season.

However he has notable weaknesses as well. The biggest being his finishing. 4 goals is not enough for a centre forward even if he played as a winger as well. Also he suffered injuries and has missed the whole pre-season.

He could face dificulties to get minutes this season if we sign a new striker. That would mean he'd be our 3rd choice striker and probably 4th choice winger. He may have to wait for his chance. He needs to step up but honestly I don't see him having a good season because there's so much competition. I expect Alexis and Chamberlain to have amazing seasons and his opportunities will be limited through the middle if we sign a new striker.

Still, the season is long and to make the title challenge we need players like Welbeck to push the team forward as well. Players go through patches of bad form and Welbeck's role could be to come on and save our asses in a difficult and uninspiring away match after champions league outing or during christmas period. When fit he's a great squad player to have!

Believable1 Unbelievable0

04 Aug 2015 16:05:01
Welbeck is a decent striker and we need to get behind up and boost his confidence.

04 Aug 2015 16:30:03
Good player to have in squad.

Can play anywhere up top, if need be.

Needs to improve and stay away from injuries.

04 Aug 2015 17:04:06
If we can get him to play for us the way he plays for England, we'll be laughing. His goal at Old Trafford to knock Man U out of the FA cup is still my favourite moment of last season.

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Aug 2015 18:24:16
Here's the thing that drives me mad about Danny.
Ever since he's been a senior player for England he's baffled me.
He's tall, he's strong, he's very quick, he's hard working and he positions himself well.
But he can't finish.

Most strikers lack some of the attributes to be a top forward, apart from finishing!
Danny has all the others bar the most important one.

Mark my words, if Danny could improve his composure and finishing, he'd be bagging 20 goals a season.

It sounds ridiculous, but he must be a nightmare for a defender.
He's as tall as the average centre back, he's faster than hem and he's strong to boot!

I think he's still got a chance to be big, but he needs to play as a striker, not out wide.

I always think he tries to be too fancy with the finish or takes that extra touch that instinctive goal scorers don't . I think if he started putting them away for a couple of weeks on the trot and confidence was on the high he could be a very good cf. That hat trick was amazing

Hi, long time reader but rarely make my self the time to post (just some asks about rumours).
I'm an Arsenal fan from Chile for over 20 years now, so this is a very exciting time for me having Alexis on the pitch every week.
As most of you, for years I've being supporting the team, waiting for new glory days to come, in an illusion and disillusion rollercoaster every season.
At the end of last season I read a lot of enthusiastic posts about a change in our destiny from now on, but I was skeptical.
In a way had to agree with many posts of CTR telling us that nothing has changed yet when I see our team falling under pressure in decisive matches (Lyon at home, Swansea at home, and so on..)
Clearly the team was rising, but I always felt insecure in those instances. For example, we were ruling the match against Chelsea at home until that Cesc's long ball to Oscar that almost end upon in a penalty. I think it change the game because we scared; we were afraid of being embarrassed once again for Mou beating us with our former star. I think Moe him self said that time maybe we doesn't want that much to win, so Arsene choose does not risk to lose. Been watching that for years.
Sunday's win make me feel different. Not just about the result, but for all the team attitude to face the match.
By the last minutes of the game Arsene show no worry or fear in his face what so ever. I was surprised to see him totally hold him self together and the team keeping calm and concentration when is most needed in this kind of games.
Only a pre season match, but you can tell the team is focused up to win it all. Even if they can't do it, I'm happy to see the boys giving their very best. Just hope we don't fall on the same mistakes of the pasted seasons.
Too soon to know how all this will end up, but for now I'm delighted to see every minute of this team like never before.
So proud of the boys and Arsene, wish them all the very best.
Lets hope we all can enjoy this story now ;)

Regards and excuse the grammar!

surely if akpom goes out on loan we will be getting some kind of backup for giroud? or is arsene planning on welbeck being that player. i think we are done in the transfer market now, at least for first teamer players.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

04 Aug 2015 05:37:09
Assuming Akpom departs, we still have the following players for the three attacking roles: Giroud, Walcott, Welbeck, Oxlade & Sanchez. Ideally we could do with one more, but how we would fit them is difficult to imagine, as the five players mentioned are all worthy of being in the starting eleven, never ming having a sixth player.
