, edoo1, edoo2,,

can you please give us an insight to the match fixing claims and what you believe the implication are?

is this the final report or do you think there more skeletons to come out of the closet?

do you think if the club is found guilty they could be banned from the competition?

could this ruin the club financially?

lets say its 1 of the top spanish clubs what sort of effect would it have?

chmpagne charlie {Ed001's Note - it really depends on the circumstances. If a club itself is found to be involved, there would be an almost certain European exclusion. They would also be stripped of any silverware won in that season, I would expect. If it is individual players, the players would face bans (possibly lifetime bans if their involvement is deemed serious enough) plus potential prison terms. It does seem, from what I can find out, that the allegations involve players, not clubs, taking bribes to fix results. The one involving Liverpool and Debrecen is alleged to have been a betting syndicate bribing Debrecen's keeper to let in 5 goals. That will be his head on the block, rather than the club's. Some clubs could be ruined financially, especially the Spanish clubs, but it is unlikely that any investigation would even look at them.}

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Ed at what stage would the powers to be decide the club was involved.

like if the manager was involved could that be enough to implicate a club. how high is high enough?

champagne charlie {Ed001's Note - that is impossible to answer, UEFA might think it would need directorial involvement to be the fault of the club. Though I would personally think management would be high enough up to implicate the club as a whole. This particular scandal doesn't seem, so far anyway, they haven't made it clear yet, to be anything other than players trying to earn extra cash.}

would any 1 else take Ignacio Camacho from malaga?

contact has 2 seasons left on it after this season.

same agent as nacho monreal,, seemed to get that transfer through with out a hitch.

maybe we are building up a relationship with malaga.

would any 1 be surprised if a player arrives from them in the summer?

champagne charlie

Believable2 Unbelievable4

I really don't think Malaga would describe our taking advantage of their financial difficulties, by pinching their best players for below market value, as building a relationship with them.

Agree16 Disagree1

Its not arsenals fault their in trouble, we must of made the best bid for cazorla and nacho I do not see that as taking advantage.

we have been in that situation were we had to sell players,, you get the best price possible and move on.

the market value for a player is the best price you can get at that time.

champagne charlie

Agree6 Disagree2

If so, i'd have Isco.

Agree6 Disagree2

But further to my original reply, I wouldn't hesitate in taking Isco if Malaga would be willing to sell.

Agree3 Disagree2

Charlie's right, it might be a skewed way of seeing things but that is the difference between a business mindset and a moral mindset. The first thing we would argue in any negotiations is that we offer them the best money for their players. Just like City offering us ridiculous money for Nasri. The argument of 'we sold you so and so for cheap' sadly holds no grounds for consideration because the truth is had Malaga not been in trouble there's no way they'd have sold us either player for the prices we paid. We offered best money and they needed it.

I notice people saying 'we sold Barcelona X why and Z, maybe they will sell us X' - sadly this is misguided. It is now a power play. We will not be selling Malaga our best players any time soon and Barcelona will only ever sell us their cas-offs, fringe players and young players.

ED what will happen if barca are found guilty in fixing 06 final? {Ed001's Note - depends on if they were involved in fixing it, or just the match was found to be fixed by an outside party.}

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Replay the game! ;)

Agree9 Disagree2

If found to be the club then we will be the new champions that year.

Agree2 Disagree4

It absolutely won't happen but.

How awkward would that be for Cesc! He would get a CL winners medal added to his time at Arsenal but he now plays for the club it would be taken off.

hi ed

can you see mourinho leaving real madrid early if they get knocked out of the cl by man utd?

do you think arsene wenger is a serious target for madrid and in your opinion could you see this happening

do you expect a lot of top managers to move around this summer?

champagne charlie {Ed001's Note - I do expect this to be the end of Jose's time with Madrid, I doubt they would sack him before they are certain to qualify for the Champions League next season though. That is their number one priority now, as they certainly aren't going to win La Liga!}

I do not know why any 1 would disagree with this post.

their not barcelona, if the team turns up we can do something at home.

we just have to go to germany still in with a 50/50 chance.

im not sure their that good, ok there walking away with the league but they don't play 30 odd hard games a season.

we can give them a game.

Bayern are one of the worlds biggest clubs but shocks do happen in the champions leauge like when liverpool beat barca at the nou camp so arsenal do have a chance.

I cannot understand some of our supporters. We were promised big names to cover the positions we all know need improving yet we again did not get anyone except an emergency buy to cover Gibbs. We were told we made several BIG bids for the right players, but nothing materialised, but still AW is defended. What do you expect when all through the window he stated his intention of waiting 'til the last minute because he said it would be cheaper! Well I for one do not believe a word of it and believe it is yet another sop to the supporters. What team is going to sell their best players at the last minute without any chance of replacing them? If Aw and SK were serious they would have been signed much much earlier to bed in and be ready for our big games. We have been conned yet again!

Believable15 Unbelievable10

At what point were you promised these signings? AW has always said he will only buy players of exceptional quality if they can add to our squad.

Seriously I'm sur some of you imagine stuff. We have a great squad and some top class youngsters coming through, if we add 1 or 2 big names in the summer that would be great, as it stands we have a talent packed midfield, 3 top class finishers all fighting for one position and an Ok defence.

Get behind the players we have

Agree10 Disagree3

We get behind the team every match but apart from a few players they don't show the intensity of the fans. the team has talent going forward but can't defend and it needs to be addressed

I see Olsson's name on here a lot. Two questions - or maybe 3 - am I the only one who thinks he is crap, and foul way too much and therefore too risky? I don't think a game goes by where he doesn't commit at least one penalty offence and he is lucky to get away with it, the guy should be at Stoke.

Also, don't you think he looks like a long-haired Beavis?

Metal Gooner

Believable6 Unbelievable2

Where have you seen his name a lot?

Don't take 'a lot' too literally - some people mention him on here sometimes when we're discussing potential defenders we can pluck from worse teams than us.

Good to hear Walcott speaking positively about wanting to play football and scoring more goals for the club.

I was one of those who thought he was more of a sprinter learning how to play footy, but he has shown the ability to improve and the hunger to want more.

Heres hoping he keeps up the improvement

hey edd and gooners quick question just want to know who you think is responsible for the mediocrity that we now come to expect from arsenal, as they have done nothing in the world of football now for years.

i am of the opinion that it's not wenger's fault and that our american owner is more interested in big profits than silverware, do others get that impression?

i have no problem with us rebuilding the squad while trying to stay competitive but for how long will we be a seller club? until financial fair play kicks in and other clubs are forced to spend less?

opinions please. one love

Trinidad-Gooner

Believable22 Unbelievable10

Mediocrity? Hmm wow what league do you watch? I take it all you watch is Barcelona of you describe Arsenal as mediocre?
What way in the world do you describe a side in the ECL knock out stage, still in the FA cup, in 6th and still competing for a top 3/4 finish, with players of the calibre of Cazorla, Wilshere, Walcott, Podolski, Vermailen, Giroud, and others, and on our day one of the most fluent football teams on the planet, as mediocre?

Wow you can only have started suppoting us at the very height of our winning streak to call us mediocre. You want to understand mediocre you should have been watching us pre Arsene, or when we scrapping against relegation. You want mediocre - I give you Helder, Hawley, Caton, Caesar, Kiwomya, and of course the great Terry Mancini.

The ghost of Terry Mancini

Agree14 Disagree12

Make a long haul flight to Trinidad did you Malaga?

Agree6 Disagree12

You must be new here.

Mike

Agree6 Disagree11

Your logic is flawed and shows little understanding on how business operates.

Are you seriously suggesting that a company any company maximises profits by failing in its primary aim.

Can you not imagine the money that would be rolling through the Marble Halls of the Emirates if Arsenal actually won something.

Can you not imagine the profits that would be generated from spin off profits from spin off products around the world again if Arsenal won something.

Merchandising and sponsorship deals would go through the roof.

Why is 4th place so important to teams?Because they get into the lucrative CL, can you imagine the revenue generated if we won it.

If you want the real reason why we do not win anything its because of the mediocrity that pads out the squad, players that despite efforts we have been unable to sell because nobody wants them.

Because the manager stubbornly sticks loyally to players that apparently are made of glass and spend more time on a treatment table than the pitch.

Because the manager sticks to tactics that do not work and formations that do not work.

Because the manager does not adapt the team in selection to suit the team that we are playing nor the tactics or formation.

How can you play Sagna who has stated that he wants to leave over Jenkinson who has committed himself to a long term contract and was developing very well.

These are just some of the reasons of our failure to win anything over the last 7 years.

Not the desire to make profit which would go hand in hand with winning Silverware.

Think before you post!

Underground Gooner.

Agree4 Disagree14

05 Feb 2013 06:57:43
I actually think it is a combination of all the above, including the players.

1. The management could/should demand more from its manager and players. Like you said, they care more about the profits

2. Wenger and his socialist wage structure has held us back for far too long now. Sometimes if we behaved more like the massive club we are

3. The players barring a few of them need to realise what an opportunity they have and use it before they end up playing for a mid table club in Germany, Spain or Brazil

Agree4 Disagree1

I believe that it is mediocre to simply aim for top 4 and to qualify for champions league.

yes, it is extremely difficult to win trophies recently with the likes of chelsea, the 2 manchester clubs, the 2 spanish clubs, now PSG and others spending waaaaay more than they should on players and salaries, but winning has to be our goal.

even if we don't succeed, at least say we are trying to win this year, and give it your best try. by stating that we are not aiming to win we simply want to place top 4 is mediocre. and for a club like arsenal not winning ANYTHING for 7 seasons is mediocre.

selling our best players every season to rival clubs is mediocre at best.

i love this club just as much as you and I stated "one love" on my original post so there's no need to be rude about it

Trinidad-Gooner

Agree6 Disagree1

It's not being rude to point out that Arsenal aren't mediocre. As for the one love bit there is not much more annoying than saying something stupid and crouching it with a deflect away from the obvious annoyance it will attract.

Personally I want us to win trophies, I want signings, but I get fed up by all the facile moaning at the club. We just need to keep perspective. We do not have a £100m to waste like Chelski, City or United. What's more Villa, Stoke and Liverpool show ho easy it is to spend big and achieve less.

Losing players to other clubs is inevitable. It isn't just is it happens almost everywhere outside United and Barcelona, and you may note United lost a little known young guy called Ronaldo. It does not make us mediocre. You entirely miss the point about what makes a club worthy of support, and yes I want a trophy, but like others I've gone a lot longer than this, seen a lot of real rubbish, and seen real mediocrity.

It does my head in that you and the many others that back your view have lost the key to supporting this great, and still great, club.

Oh by the way I know the message is a hard one so - peace!

The ghost of a terry Mancini

Agree1 Disagree1

Dear the ghost of terry mancini,

number one: I said "one-love" at the end of my post not to deflect obvious annoyance as you say but simply to spread peace in a time where there is too much ignorance and violence, but that's another point altogether.

number two: no, it is not rude to say that arsenal are not mediocre. But the way in which you said it was, in fact, rude. All you had to do was say that you disagree with me that's all. you don't have to go on your tirade of "wow what league do you watch?" and "you must only watch Barcelona". you're being rude, so shut it

number three: losing players to other clubs is not inevitable. yes, sometimes it is, like when the player comes out and says he wants to leave and play somewhere else. but not when you consistently sell your best players to clubs who place higher up in the table than you.

number four: yes, we all want trophies, but not if it means that we engulf the club in debt. what fans want and deserve is fair bang for their buck, and if you compare our results in recent seasons with the ticket prices, I think you will see a large discrepancy.

yes the club is great, and 2 fans of the same great club shouldn't be at a war of words, so don't get your panties in a twist, chin up and of course, one love.

Just seen the story about the mass-scale match-fixing allegations involving around 380 games and 425 corrupt officials.

Let us bring their attention to the Arsenal Barca tie at the Nou Camp where RVP was sent off. And let's bring their attention to the linesman in a recent fixture where we beat a rugby team 1-0 at the Emirates ;-)

I hope they publish the report.

Metal Gooner

Believable16 Unbelievable3

They could also investigate mark clatter burg, utd v Chelsea, offsiude goal and Torres sent off after being fouled, utd v west ham, one penalty given the other not, and utd trying to get on the Singapore stock exchange. Only backing up what everyone has said for years. Something fishy at utd

Completely agree mate, we got robbed at the nou camp.

such a shame we showed the world the blueprint on how to kick their ar$e with our display at the emirates then RVP gets sent off for kicking the ball at goal ONE SECOND after the referee blows his whistle with 80,000 screaming fans all around him. thoughts on the cl game with bayern munich.

this is game where I want to see the best british starting.

i want to see the ox sitting beside jack in the middle of the park.

i want to see jenkinson starting

i want to see podolski and mert prove to there own country men that they are still players that can play at the highest level. I want them to be talked about in the german press after the game for good reasons.

i want eisfeld involved, if this boy is the real deal he will make some sort of impact against a german team

i want wenger to have a different pan, I want him to confuse the s**t out of them.

if diaby is fully fit and up for it he should be a huge bonus.

i want wenger to make decisions quickly if thing are not working.

there has to be game this season where every thing clicks and goes our way against a big team why not munich.

if we can play to the whistle we have a chance.

the 2nd leg is the desire to hold on and see where we end up.

a couple of surprises in this round and who knows who we will get, I all way's thought the 1/4 finals tells you the whole story of where things will end up but you all ways get a surprise!

just saying thoughts please

champagne charlie

Believable4 Unbelievable13

What I want against munich,
A first half exactly the same as against ac milan.
Waq

Agree4 Disagree0

Ox in the middle? over Arteta? a fit and able Diaby? defensive-minded Coq? nein!
Jack plays a pick-and-run game carrying the ball forward, Santi's role is to trigger finishes so the third guy in the middle would have to play a bit deeper to cover the back line and help switch between wings.

with the risk of mixing up play, we stand more a chance of confusing ourselves rather than the opponents. Wenger gets plenty abuse as it is. there's no need to pile more on himself by experimenting on the highest level of European club competitions with an already under-firing squad.

going gung-ho against a side like Bayern would be the last thing we'd want to do.

Mike

Agree5 Disagree1

Wouldn't expose jenkinson to Ribery after hardly playing in the last months.
Experience is essential due to the experience and quality that Munich will play. Not saying ox shouldn't play as it was home against Milan last season where he had his best game in an Arsenal shirt (in my opinion). Diaby is a must if fit.
Someone posted that vermaelen should play left back to save us from santos playing which nobody wants. Home tie is massive but as with most games it's the defence which will worry me the most. Need a couple of goal lead going into the away game to stand a chance.

Paul - Rochester

Agree3 Disagree0

Hmmm, really can't say I agree with this one!

I would want our best team starting, for me that isn't a rusty Ox in the middle when we could have Jack and Santi there. Sadly there's no way Jenko will start although if he did I wouldn't complain at all.

It's a nice wishlist but if Wenger did any of that and we lost I for one would say he totally threw the game. We have to field our best most experienced side - the only player I wouldn't mind swapping is Jenko for Sagna.

I also think the CB pairing should be Kos and Verm.

Metal Gooner

Agree3 Disagree0

Just remembered we have no Nacho for this tie. So for that reason yes it surely has to be Kos, Mert and Verm all starting. surely Wenger won't play Santos in this game. . surely. .

Metal Gooner

Agree5 Disagree0

Good to have you back Malaga Gooner. I prefer your new name

Agree0 Disagree0

Waq,

When you say like the first half of the AC Milan game - just checking you don't mean the the very first half, or even the first half of the two leg tie I hope?

The ghost of Terry Mancini

p. s what I would like to see is Walcott on the run, Santi and Jack threading passes, and a fit Diaby proving me totally and utterly wrong as he dominates Bayern Vieira style.

not saying these games were fixed, just they had relevant circumstances.
Waq

Agree5 Disagree0

Chelsea or man united I would imagine.

Agree2 Disagree0

England
Of course fixed can mean different things - the referee was fixed aka Juventus vs Derby - the away side deliberately threw the game with the home side oblivious - and vice versa - both sdies conspired to fix a result - or certain players from either side fixed events rather than the result etc.
I may be being naive but I doubt it was an English side there is too much money in the game to take the chance.

With our youngsters and this season's new signings (Santi, Giroud, Pod, Nacho) getting better each game we play and hopefully with a couple more incoming signings this summer, I truly think we have a shot at winning the league next season.

Yes, it's a ways away and we are currently struggling to even make top 4, but honestly, I can't help myself thinking about it. COYG

I just love reading this site. But c'mon guys - how many of these rumours ever come true!
Not a mention of Nacho Man till it was almost official - and the rest of the "he'll be in by the weekend - guaranteed" have come to nothing. I'm finding it harder and harder to believe the "my mate who brother's friend is steward. " stuff. Maybe, just maybe, Mr Wenger does not confide in the hired help.
I could make these up and they would be just as convincing.

Believable11 Unbelievable1

Simple rule of thumb that i've come to follow here is unless a "rumour" has less than three or more thirty mentions, it's a lie.

other than that, it's just a jolly good place to hang around as long as you're mentally capable enough to not expect anything (i can't stress on this enough) at all from the club in terms of spending.
if you expect nothing and you'll always be surprised.

Your Sarcasm and irony always ads an interesting twist to the different topics. For everyone else, don't change your way to Sarcasm and irony just because someone wrote that they liked it.
