Ed,

Lukaku? Hit or miss?
An enigma?

He can have a stinker, but on his day, ala West Brom, the guy is unplayable.

{Ed025's Note - i agree dags..

04 Oct 2015 23:48:23
Steve,

I see down the page u asked do I think this is a one off.

Yes and no tbh lol, we are not silly or deluded to know we are in any way the finished article yet.

We got in 4 New starters at least this window, hiccups and bumps were always to be expected.
We have made great strides going forward in the last 2 years, 7th to 4th a squad knitting together nicely and hopefully improvement again.
This season we expect to be fighting but any United fan will tell u we don't expect to win it without a really open title race (which I don't think it will be).

Today we just got our tactics horribly wrong (understatement).
We complicated a game that didn't need complicating really.
We will be better next time :)

Again well done on the win mate, I don't think I've seen a 30 min spell like that for a long time.
It somewhat warms me a bit knowing there wouldn't be many if any that could of withheld that either lol.

Top man ctr. Some of your signings for me are on trial but one who isnt, martial, the kid is the real deal and ouses class, impressed with him.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:05:41
CTR I have said that you guys don't stay down for long! You have come on leaps and bounds in a few years. As it turns out you have bought well and you guys ain't shy on spending if need be. I don't ever like crowing but a few scoffed when I said if we turned up we would give you a spanking. I feel that the result was dependent on how we played, you guys have got a blueprint but have not yet got the cohesion or quality to be a great team( something that is enevitable at United and will come) we are so hot and cold and that has always been the problem. No major silverware for years for us but cast your mind and tell me of a time you can remember when we have gone a whole season and not played top class football for a period in a season. Every season we show real class. But never have we showed that for most of a season only ever glimpses of greatness. I do feel that this year both us and United can have a go although my money is on city by hook or crook although they look shady at times

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:11:09
Yes he has it! a real player there.

I wouldn't say on trial as such, most have blended in nicely and better consistent performances will come with time.

Spyder, Darmian, Depay, Martial, Smalling and De Gea are all 25 or under and are not even near there prime so they will get time.
But we had to be careful on the numbers we bought in for squad balance etc, to many to soon and all that.

Anyways I don't wanna clog this up with United chat, today is not about us it's your turn in the light :)

We will get better!
:)

05 Oct 2015 00:13:58
Chris,

I think LVG's team selection undid you today.

How Schneids sat on bench and Schwieny played is beyond me.

Schneids would have got tighter on Cazorla and would also have helped out Darmian

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:16:28
Damn, didn't finish post lol.

And you need somebody to help out Smalling.

Blind is a bit of an enigma.

Centre Half? Not sure, he seems a bit of a Callum Chambers type of player, can play here, can play there, but not too sure where to put him.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:26:52
I don't think the selection was to wrong tbh (I would of preferred Spyder), it was the tactics that was strange.

If we want to play like that it's fine, but it always has to be Rooney that picks up Cazorla not Bastian.

We allowed u to nick the ball and break quickly and to many times our CM was out of position exposing our fullbacks.

It's not Darmian or Youngs fault they got caught out, when u play suicide tactics like that it can happen.

Bad day at the office.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:32:30
Left back is his best place dags.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:48:56
Derby,

On team bus?

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:54:14
There's a lot of discord with Rooney back on your site mate, what do you make of him has he lost it? Your perfectly correct about Rooney picking up caz but all in all you can't play young at left back against a team that can half play mate.. Good player no full back

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:59:45
Ctr I meant darmian depay swinestieger blind, the other defender can't remembe his name, left back i think van gaals signings on trial. They have a bit to prove.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 01:12:32
Ctr that player, rojo. Old age.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 08:06:42
Again no mate, rojo is a squad player so no problem there, depay is young and will get time I'm sure and will flourish with that. Darmian has been a really good buy he had a bit of a time against Sanchez granted but most would if left disgustingly exposed like he was.
Bastian has been great, a real leader and has added that experience we lacked.

Sunday we just got our tactics wrong no one player is to blame for that, lvg will have to take that one.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 13:16:01
Ok mate you know your team better than the likes of me. i'm sure you are right.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Oct 2015 08:58:00
I think we are going over the top here a bit, CTR did mention a few days a back some of the same signings who would make the arsenal squad. my question is do you still think so? Let me repeat the names if i remember; Darmian, Shaw, and someone others.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 23:43:55
Right i'm going to get something else off my chest. Today ozil scored, worked back tackled, even headed a ball, I don't want anyone on here saying he is in the team for his passing. He showed today he can work and close down, I don't expect anything less from now on.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

04 Oct 2015 23:54:47
You all know, in not a huge Ozilite.

But, agree. Today he was superb.

All round performance and totally agree, this is the standard I expect, not every game, but certainly more often than he has produced in the past.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 02:00:15
To be fair he has done this plenty of other times but it goes unnoticed. Not saying it's every week but more often than he's given credit for.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 08:11:57
Plus I'd like to see Le Coq do more flicks and assists Cech score more goals and Kos make more runs outwide to provide those 50/50 crosses so Santi can challenge the opposition keeper like Duncan Ferguson used to, of and Sanchez needs to be more alert when we lose the ball in the opponent's box and get behind the defence to play sweeper more if he's ever going to one of the games greats. But apart from that I think yesterday went okish Steve :-)

Bambam has posted (and taken some stick) that it wouldn't be apocalyptic if we got knocked out of CL, so we could concentrate all our efforts on Prem League.

Agree?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

04 Oct 2015 22:28:22
Mate what bambam says isn't an opinion it's pure logic! If we didn't have a competition that we have no chance of winning anyway in our way we would do far better in the EPL. But that been said I love the champs leauge and hope we stay in it for better or for worse

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 22:37:27
The realistic few would agree those still dreaming will think we can get to the last four and finish 3rd or 4th and mark that as success, me, its a tall order in the CL now given who our next two games are against, so cut your losses and give the PL a real go. Next season might not see Chelsea be so awful. I have to agree with T Henry on this .

We will not win the CL that is a given , as for the PL we have a healthy points lead over Chelsea ( which we shouldn't surrender ) keep our 'key' players free of fatigue and injury and the PL could still be in touching distance in April.

I did see a post earlier say " let's show we mean business in the CL"??? Really, and what is so special about this season.? Just a question seeing as our squad has got older in age and the treatment table is as busy as ever

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 22:37:33
Agree Growbun,

I think CL is still a bridge too far, especially when stepping into the ring with the likes of Barca, Bayern and RM.

Plus, we have given ourselves a mountain to climb in group stages.

If we win the league our woeful CL campaign will be a distant memory.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 23:24:04
Every one knows my opinion on the team and wenger. But if going out of the champs league make us more powerful in the league, i'm with you guys. Everything you've said is correct, but a few more performances like today and everyone's opinions could be changed and we can go a good distance even in the champs league.

As i said earlier, whether we are in the champs league or not, if we don't become more professional in our approach and produce more top performances like today neither will matter. In or out we have to be consistent and resilute in our approach to all games, like today and not one off blasts.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 23:44:45
It's all true but let's not wish for it! As a fan you have to have the same mentality that you want from your team and that is to win every game. Now I think we can take 3/4 points from Bayern and 6 off olypiakoswhatevertheyarecalled and Zagreb and that should see us through. But I wouldn't fancy us to lift the trophy?

So now we can look at the team and to win the champions league who needs to be replaced? To answer that question you would have to say at least half the team so the players that would stay are... Cech, Sanchez who else guys help me... Would Ozil stay? Ramsey? Kos perhaps? Walcott maybe? I don't know! I do know that on there day they could beat any team.. How do you make it their day more often?

Hopefully we can take some much needed steam from this game and go on a run from now until May we know that we can do it so let's do it coyg

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 23:48:49
Agree Steve,

Call me defeatist but I think we have shot ourselves in the foot, CL wise.

2 defeats in 2 games?

Unacceptable.

But, if we beat Bayern at home than I will possibly/probably be singing from a different hymn book.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:24:20
Dags if we beat Bayern in one of those two games it has to be said that we could progress by beating the other two teams in the last two matches . 9 points is seen as respectable in a he CL. My hunch is that we will get through for better or worse

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:53:16
It's a tall order Growbun.

Bayern know if they beat us they will pretty much qualify after 3 games.

Massive match for both teams mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

Superb performance today, best game for me from ozil and striker Walcott so far. Sant, coq, cech, monrealall perfomed to a high standard. The legend is just being a legend.

Even wenger got his tactics spot on. can't fault the way we went about our job. The only negative if it is a negative, is we have been here before, bayern, man citeh and other top performances and never continued. To keep at the level like this for a sustained period, enabling you to win things is the hardest thing and we haven't been able too.

You shouldn't have to have crisis talks after a poor performance to spur you on to a game like this. It is in your dna. Until it is in our dna we can't be considered serious title contenders. We did at least expose man u though, they were awful.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

04 Oct 2015 19:47:15

Agree3 Disagree1

04 Oct 2015 20:00:30
Totally disagree with the last bit Steve sorry mate but I've not seen us play like that for year's and years against a top side, the first 20 minutes equaled anything I've ever witnessed from any Arsenal team in my 40 odd years of support.
I'm not getting carried away I know exactly what might happen after the break but today for we were at our absolute best for over a dacade totally awesome for 20 minutes then totally professional for the next 70 with the game in the bag and only ours to lose. No sign of naivety from players or manager today brilliant.

Agree1 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 20:03:25
Totally agree.

I did post pre match we would lose 1-2 but when I saw Carrick and Scweinsteiger starting and Schneiderlin on bench, I thought it was Christmas.

04 Oct 2015 19:38:01
Wow, well where do I start?

Your lads done well today, I see Cazorla getting a lot praise today, he was good but for me Ramsey was excellent. Him and Bellerin really caught Ashley Young out.

For 30 mins we couldn't hold the ball at all and our full backs where left so exposed it was criminal, especially when its Sanchez exposing them, I've said before he's the best player in the league and today he showed that.

Honestly after 30 mins I was looking at damage limitation lol.
Credit to the lads they didn't totally capitulate and lose there sh**.

Again congratulations lads, best team on the day won that's for sure!

United fans ain't daft they know they have a lot of improving to do same as we do. Derby a similar thing happened to me and a mate many moons ago at a semi final at villa park, we ended up in a pub full of utd fans just outside the ground a couple of hours before kick off and being young and stupid decide to stay with Arsenal scarf's on full show and after a few pints try and out sing them, 2 v what seemed like hundreds :-) it was great we had some great banter over several more pints and even walked down to the game together and shook hands before we went down to the Arsenal end for the match.

We were garbage in the week yet in the first 20-25 minutes today we would have hammered anyone and I mean anyone .

Breath taking passing it was stunning to watch .

Ozil brilliant , Walcott brilliant , Sanchez and Santi on another planet . Ramsey was also superb , Per and Gabs looked very sharp.

What a save from PC also late in the first half.

Not one negative from today AT ALL.

No injuries during the International break please and then 3 points at Watford.

04 Oct 2015 19:13:50
Cech was superb in a game where he didn't have to do loads but everything he did was top notch, not dissing Ospina but Petr catches or palms well clear of danger, Ospina always had to make double or even triple saves because of his weak stops.
Don't get me wrong if Cech is injured Ospina is a,fine reserve keeper to have just never a premier league winning one over 38 games.

Red we ain't winning the champions league , I've said for years the CL is a distraction for us, win what is possible............or more realistic ........the PL.

Even with the great Henry and co we couldn't win the CL, mean business , not a chance.

Arsenal were stunning today , pure brilliance, let's get that straight, but with Chelsea now so far behind , we need all the help possible to cling onto M City . Trust me Europe will hinder us.

If you thought it could help us win the league then I could see your point (or should I say Carraghers point). But as you have already ruled out absolutely any possibility of us winning the league, I'm rather confused as to why you would then want us to get knocked out of the champions league.

I think the point is, we have uaually played more consistent football in the past once we were knocked out of cl. It could be a blessing if we didn't go through.

Have always been a Giroud up front and Walcott right wing kind of guy.

But, credit where its due, we are so much more fluent and penetrative with Theo up top.

Will hold my hands up and say it, Theo should be our regular striker.

Mate he was absolutely brilliant today the best I've ever ever seen from him, he isn't and will never be Roben but up top just how good he could be we need to find out over the rest of this season, sorry Olly but its for the good of Arsenal that Theo gets his chance between now and May.

Theo was very good today, his off the ball pressing was relentless! The first half was impressive but I was equally impressed how calm in defending we were in the 2nd half

04 Oct 2015 19:29:58
I did say in pre-season that we didn't need a striker because Theo would step up to the plate. Now I know he's got a long way to go to prove me right on that, he's got to do it over a season. But let's all just hope he can keep playing like this and get behind him. He could be a massive weapon for us this year.

Obviously completely blown away by that and everyone but I thought Theo although not mom showed some really fantastic signs of being a really big player up top.
At times he reminded me of Henry at others very much like Sanchez and on one occasion when he attempted a very clever turn with arms spread wide just for a millisecond he looked like Dennis Bergkamp, I can pay him no bigger compliment by far his best ever performance for Arsenal IMO.

Right regardless of how the so called top four have started I feel that the rest of the teams in the league have more savy than ever.

We don't have the best record against United but I believe our best 11 will beat there best 11 if both teams turn up and play. The problem is that we bottle it more often than not

For me losing to utd is always the lowest point of the season for me it hurts more than losing to spurs, with Le Coq fit I don't expect anything like past humiliations to happen today but without Kos I find it difficult to see a clean sheet.
People talk about squad strength well utd came to us and beat us last season with probably the most patched up defence I've ever seen but if we don't have both Kos and Le Coq playing I think we always look very vulnerable in big games.

I find it an absolute disgrace that we haven't put more distance between us and United over the past three years. Come next year United will be serious contenders again! We should have been a force but hey ho the trails and tribulations of an Arsenal fan. But seriously if we go at them close them down and play fast we could hurt them today, remember United will come and play so that should suit us .

They were in chaos after Fergie while we were finally free from the restraints of the stadium, finally after years of continually being beaten and far to often humiliated by utd looked to be ending but in little more than a year of LVG utd once again come to the Emerirates as favourites.
That says more about us than them

Arsenal are odds on with some. You can get 3 to 1 on Man U. Don't think about throwing your money away though.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 13:46:13
No chance of that Ubi I might be pessimistic and struggling to see how we're ever going to be more than also rans for the big prizes but betting against Arsenal has never crossed my mind ever, 3-1 is an excellent price though and if it wasn't against us I've be tempted to have £10 on that to cover £20 bet on a Everton 4 1 utd 1 2 double.
But you can't or shouldn't ever get against up your own team.

Just reading the debate about a strong league etc etc

I think it looks that way because the big boys have all started so poorly. Where are the foxes in the league? and we did what against them?

Look what Bournemouth did at Upton Park , there is no consistency at the moment .

M City showed yesterday how good they can be.

At the end of the season the top four will be two clubs from Manchester and Two from London.

I take your point Steve , we have one win at OT in the FA Cup and we are suddenly a better team than Man U.

Having a better squad UBI means naff all mate , 70% of the season half of our squad are on the treatment table.

As I have said if we had our first choice 14-15 players available every week by god we would take some stopping. Reality is we never have . And over the last x number of seasons we have struggled against Man U.

Lets hope today is different

Believable0 Unbelievable0

04 Oct 2015 09:40:00
Sure, but let's not forget we finished above them last year. What better measure is there than that? Still think we'll stuff em today. COYG!

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 09:53:23
Having the best squad is obviously always an advantage but not a guarantee of anything, Real with Beckham Zidan Ronaldo etc was on paper the best squad ever but did very little while utd under Fergie had some very very average players playing week in week out and dominated the premier league, its not always what you've got but how you use it that matters.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 10:19:55
That and the fact that u don't have a better squad massively than us if at all.

Ubi u finished a few points above United last year mate. Nothing really to shout about.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 10:40:17
Last season was LVG 1st season and he inherited a team that finished 8th the season before, Arsene had been at Arsenal 18 years at the time so I should hope we did finish above them last season.
We had a massive head start on them when LVG arrived the only question is have they overtaken us within 14 months?
Today won't prove that one way or the other but the season will.

Spot on.

Bit of a dilemma though because he is still our best RW.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 10:01:23
He needs a 10 game consecutive run to see what he can do against all comers then we can't see once and for all if he can do it down the middle, on the wing he's either the invisible man or very good but at 26 he's still not a proven top player outwide.
Its middle or bust for me with Theo

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 00:21:56
Right i'm going to stick my neck out and say we won't, can't keep a clean sheet against man united. Not because man u are that great but because we can't defend, and especially in these types of games. I will even predict we will let in more than 1, but i can't predict what will happen at the other end, we could fail to score or we may score 2 or 3, but we won't keep a clean sheet.

My point being not being secure at the back leaves us open to the chance of letting in the first goal and when that happen often, it creates uncertainty and often leads to us getting beat. It will be another game watching from behind the pillow waiting for the usual. i'm afraid my confidence in wenger and the team is shot. But i will still be shouting for the win.

Don't underestimate Per and the back 4 plus Cech.

He's been up against more experience and quicker players. We just need to understand the threat and be organised. Hopefully Per won't be left with a sprint against the young man!

Home win :)

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 09:34:00
To be fair Mertesacker does usually get the timing of his tackles spot on when he can get close enough to make a tackle.
Everyone knows he's slow but he's also not great in the Air either because although he may be 7ft or whatever that's it he simply can't get off the ground to jump so the Ave player of say 5ft 10 can beat him there too, then there's his ball watching once it's gone past him he's a spectator without a thought for getting back in the game.
But apart from those few minor details he's fantastic if you forget what he's best known for of all.

Agree0 Disagree1

04 Oct 2015 11:09:47
62 - think you are a bit tough on BFG. He has pedigree and you can clearly see the impact of him on the back 4 compared to when TV5 was the "leader."

If he is part of the correct back 4 - he is great. Just like you wouldn't play Adams with another slow centre half. Not comparing the two, just drawing parallels. No difference than the right back working well with the right sided midfielder or the left back so that we are not exposed. Football is about partnerships not just individuals.

We have plenty pace to cover him and I am sure enough experience in Per's backlocker. I remember everyone being concerned about pace against Per before but pretty sure he dealt with it on the world stage and the EPL stage.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 11:46:30
Toure was brilliant next to Sol Campbell SY but without him and next to Gallas I thought he looked weak a lot of the time.
Kos next to Mertesacker is OK in most games but without Kos he takes a lot of covering for, Gab Kos is most people's 1st choice for good reason.
Mertesacker is OK if your team is set up where he rarely gets exposed one on one.
He has 100 caps for Germany and was in the squad that won the world cup which no body can argue about but he still slow both physically and mentally was seen against Olypiakos most recently in the 3rd goal ( there's been so many of those), he just doesn't react until its too late.
There's been some brilliant CBs without great pace but they all read the game well so their head made up for their legs but that just isn't Mertesacker, hopefully we won't see it today but I wouldn't be surprised if we do.
