So, Pep has omitted Yaya from their Champs League squad and banished Joe Hart to Italy.

This after Mourinho basically dumps Schweinsteiger on his expensive backside.

Is ruthlessness the key to success?

Ruthlessness is an ingredient of success but only one

Squad harmony, mentality, fitness, injuries and money plus luck all play a part as does when you play opponents

Discipline to me seems like the Special ones ingredient of success - that and a cheque book

Pep - pressing all over the pitch with a very expensive squad. Did I mention cheque book.

Klopp - energy and no discipline. To come up short in EPL every time.

I feel so sorry for schweinsteiger. A genuinely lovely bloke and an incredible player, if not a legend of the modern game. Man U was a terrible decision for him. I would have rather had him on our injury table than him throw away his twilight years under managers who disrespect him.

I agree NE, a footballing decision is a footballing decision and the best managers aren't afraid to make the really tough really big decisions that deliver success, but the disrespect shown, its beyond me why that's necessary or right.

62 - disrespect to Yaya?

As long city remember Yaya birthday he won't care :-)
I actually think rightly or wrongly Pep is saving him for the latter stages of the CL whilst also making a point about who is in charge.

Top 4 and quarter finals of Champions League. Successful season or not?

I'm sure Leicester fans would accept that as a very successful season but man city fans not so much so :-)

For me, the position is only partially relevant.

I want to see 100% effort from the team, the players working together and for each other, and either Wenger being brutal and only selecting on performance, or keep starting a player that isn't performing great only for them to repay that faith with a big season.

I also want to see Wenger do something different tactically when our normal formation isn't working.

If that happens, but we're just beaten by better teams, I'd be happy with 4th. I would like more of course. If we just scrape through by luck, or play atrocious football and lots of players don't give their all, I won't be happy with it.

I'd even play all youth and fringe players in the domestic cups so we can focus on league and champs league.

Good question.

For me, it's a no.

As a business model, you should progress every season.

4th (although 2nd last season) , is pretty much 'our spot'every season.

It's ok as a bare minimum, but as a 'business' you should always aim to progress.

We have spent good money in the summer and bought some good players, as well released players who should have gone 2 year's ago.

For me, it has to be 1st.

I think this season success should be judged by whether or not the team does enough to get Özil and Sanchez sign new contracts imo. It would show we're still attractive to the big boys. If not we lose two *world class* players who could be very difficult to replace.

So with the new wave of optimism that Perez has brought in with him and with the transfer window closed plus the chance to see all premier league teams in action for 3 games what are people's predictions for the top 4 in order come May 2017?

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - utd, city, chelsea, arsenal..

04 Sep 2016 10:28:31
I'm not sure this wave of optimism you speak of is real, do you have stats to back it up or even better any fact or are you just going by something you've heard repeatedly.

Will we win this 4th place trophy you yourself most ardently believe exists. Let's just wait and see what the stats bring as opposed to guess or believe what the papers say. 😉.

Love it Red :-)
I agree with the top 4 Ed025 mate but my thoughts on positions differ slightly.
For me Chelsea and utd will both benefit from no CL distractions while I know utd have the Spursday night to contend with I think Mourinho is good at using smaller competitions to his advantage and getting them to compliment his title bids, Chelsea always seemed to go strong in the league cup and the premier league under him.
I'm not sure about Pep and city being able to compete in both CL and premier league this season and I think they will have the best run of all the English teams by some distance in the champions league but at the expense of the premier league.
So I'm going for a very close contest between utd and chelsea for top spot and city and Arsenal to battle it out for 3rd and 4th place resulting in
Chelsea
Utd
City
Arsenal
Final positions.

Thanks 62,😀

City have yet to even play their best 3 summer signings, Jesus, Sane and Gundogan so for me they are the favourites.

United despite the addition of Pogba, Ibrahimovich and Micky still have some players like Blind, Fellaini, Carrick, Rojo, Smalling, Valencia and a few others. Not saying they are poor but Mourinho couldn't replace everyone at one hit. It depends on his ability to squeeze the absolute max out of them and 3 relatively easy games isn't yet any indicator. The game against City, shame Aguero is missing, will give maybe a better indication, even though to early in the season.

Chelsea again still have some weaker squad players so not everything is that cut and dried.

Apart from Giroud where we would all have loved a better option I don't really see any other spots where we don't have quality and very good back up.

Heart would obviously love to say Arsenal, head says City, don't care who fills the next two spots.

G62 i agree with you to a certain extent, but it's been proven that if the media can repeat a falsehood long enough, the people public begin to accept it as fact.

The stats do not lie, I know for a fact that people use stats to belittle Arsène and Arsenal on a regular basis. West Brom were recently praised for keeping their 23rd clean Sheet under Pulis, but we have had 27 in that same period and its the best in the league. But it doesn't fit the negative coverage so it gets ignored by the media and our fans alike.

Raver Mate i Like you but only Harry Kane and maybe Toby Alderweired would Start here.

Cech> Lloris
Koscielny> Vertonghen
Alderweireld >Mustafi
Bellerin> Walker
Monreal> Rose
Xhaka> Dier
Carzola > Dembele
Alexis> Eriksen
Walcott > Lamela
Ozil> Ali
Kane> Giroud

Fuser i hate how criminally underrated Monreal is, he is a great left back and for the last two years has been a pillar of strength for us. Ozil, kos, Alexis and maybe Bellerin would start in any side you mentioned too.

Positive its true that if people say something enough it becomes falsely accepted as fact, captain Kirk never once said ' Been me up Scotty ' but we all think we remember him saying it :-)
Stats? Olly's goal scoring record stats suggest he's an excellent finisher with a 1 in 2 strike rate but if we look at the facts more closely he's anything but a prolific goal scorer, he's extremely wasteful in front of goal which is why most people felt during the summer we needed a top class striker to challenge for the title.
Unfortunately stars are very unreliable indicators of anything more than what people want them to show be it in a positive or negative light, which is why clubs have scouts rather than a computer to find new players with.

Sorry CMP, but I seriously just don't rate Monreal. He's decent enough but even though LB has been a problem area for Chelsea over the last few years I still wouldn't take him.
A few corrections to your list:
Cech = Lloris
Dier > Xhaka
Monreal = Rose
Lamela > Walcott.
Cech and Lloris have slightly different areas in which they best each other but overall very similar levels. Monreal is fairly defensively solid but Rose is better offensively. Dier ahead of Xhaka because Dier was one of the best DM's last year and Xhaka hasn't been here long enough imo. And lastly I'd take any of Spuds AM's over Walcott.

City would take Bellerin and possibly one of your CM's. Although with Kompany a bit crocked, you could include Kos.
United: personally I'd put Ozil or Sanchez in for Rooney. Along with Bellerin. Potentially Kos but I like the look of Utd's defence.
Chelsea: Depends on formation and how well our newest signings fit in but definitely take Sanchez. Potentially Bellerin but that would leave Dave at LB. Kos again potentially but I think a partnership of Luiz and Zouma will suit our system. We don't play with a no10 currently so no spot for Ozil.
Who I'd take for Arsenal from:
City: Aguero, KDB/ Sterling for RW. Kompany/ Stones for Mustafi/ Merts/ Gabriel
Utd: Ibrahimovic, Mhkityran for Walcott. Pogba. Shaw. Potentially Bailly for Mustafi. And then probably DDG, simply as I currently rate him as the 2nd best keeper.
Chelsea: Costa, Hazard, Kante, I'd take Dave over Monreal and possibly even Bellerin although that's a tough one. Zouma over Mustafi/ Merts/ Gabriel. Then Courtois and Cech is 50/ 50 on whether you want experience or long term.
