Eds can we get a poll for new captain if both TV5 and MA8 both leave?
i think it's going to be unanimously PM4 for everyone with WS1 close behind

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed027's Note - sure mate, with Arteta unlikely to be a starter I won't include him

05 Aug 2014 22:29:37
Would never pick WS1 as captain.

Should never be a keeper in my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm with you Dags Wayne Sleep can't be Arsenal capt, people would laugh at us

Agree0 Disagree0

Definitely give it to the BFG no doubt about that at all!

Agree0 Disagree0

WS1 is too immature to be captain and lacks leadership skills in my opinion

PM4 is the only option really

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 23:58:56
Dags bit harsh isn't it. I think he is a good keeper improving each season

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree. If anything I would put someone like ramsey as he has captained wales. Even BFG eould be great!

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd have BFG as capt and rambo as VC

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Aug 2014 04:21:55
BFG for me too. Already a leader on the pitch.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Aug 2014 07:26:11
D16,

I'm not slating him as a keeper.

Have never bought into the idea of a GK being Captain, as they are not in the position to talk to players etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Aug 2014 08:27:57
Oh I read that wrong. I thought you meant he should never be a keeper lol

Agree0 Disagree0

Per as captain, Arteta should retain vice captain and Ramsey 3rd Captain

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Aug 2014 12:08:27
Lol D16

Agree0 Disagree0

Ramsey or Wilshere for me. I know mertesacker is a fan favourite but I think a captain for the long term should be picked. Someone who could be at the club for 5-10 years. Mertesacker is 29 and in my opinion he's got 2 seasons max with us before being replaced for a more mobile option.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - for me the captain should be a very regular starter rocky, and that may rule jack out mate..

Per Captain
Aaron Vice Captain
Jack 3d choice option

In 2 to 3 years make Jack vice Captain & Aaron Captain.
That should be th plan

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree Ed. Possibility that could happen tho, we and he knows what he needs to do. Ramsey is the obvious player who is and will be that regular starter

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - he would be a good choice for me rocky..

05 Aug 2014 21:47:50
Alisher Usmanov, our 2nd biggest shareholder believes the club are about to enter an era of winning trophies.

"I think we begin an era for Arsenal where we will win trophies. That is most important for football".

Let's hope he is correct.

Ed how much is the bid from barca for tv5

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have no interest in discussing money.}

05 Aug 2014 20:07:02
£10m I think.

For me, if Barca have bid £10m for Vermaelen, then accept it. I love the guy and can see why he wants to move. but please for the love of god don't sell him to United.
Get the deal done. Buy a replacement. Buy a defensive midfielder (Carvalho please) and let's get on with winning the league!
COYG

(If you are reading this AW, you can buy Reus as well if you like)

I've got a funny feeling TV5 will go to Barca and end up in a DM role and be awesome.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 20:53:56
TV5 as a DM at barcelona? Song is much more gifted on the ball and he couldn't get in the team, Verm would have no chance as a DM there.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 21:20:55
He has all the qualities to become a great DM, and your Song comment was pure jokes mate, like it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Barca would never convert a centre back to a midfielder - rather they play midfielders in defence

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 17:14:44
Eds how soon is Walcott expectected to start in th first team, if he doesn't get any setbacks?
Thanxxx

{Ed002's Note - I really have no idea.}

05 Aug 2014 16:56:09
Ed002, who do you think is more likely for arsenal, carvalho or khedira?
Cheers, love the website!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I really don't want to get in to predicting "more likely" players.}

That makes me think that you assume we'll sign a CDM then Ed :)

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 16:35:22
Hello edd will any of podolski, arteta, flamini, monreal, carzola and diaby be leaving

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I expect Arteta to go. Maybe Carzola.}

Wow, this is news. Means we are getting a DM. Sorry to see him go, class act!

Agree0 Disagree0

If they go expect monreal to go next season

. too early to eye up and potential lb cover?

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Aug 2014 09:58:59
why do you expect Arteta to leave Ed002? Just curious. I wouldn't mind him leaving; he's served the club very well but is declining. There's no ignoring that

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am not going to try and justify everything I write.}

05 Aug 2014 16:32:54
Ed have you heard anything about Arsenal bidding for Carvalho today?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Nope.}

05 Aug 2014 16:31:15
If Carvalho is the chosen one, then for goodness sake let's get it finalised before a PSG, RM or even Chelski come in for him.
The difference in money terms between what we are reported to have offered and what Sporting would accept if the fee was front-loaded is probably minimal. We have a multitude of fringe players who are surplus to requirements who can generate sufficient to cover any shortfall.
It may of course be the third-party ownership situation that is causing a delay, but that should not stop us agreeing terms or arranging medicals if Sporting so agree.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Madrid and chelsea won't be spending that amount on a position that does not need to be covered for them.

the only team who could trump us to the player would be man utd, if their Vidal pursuit fades.

Agree0 Disagree0

Whilst I respect your view Lakerville, it does little to reassure me. This potential transfer is taking far too long. Wenger has known for weeks that Khedira's age, fitness and wage demands made him a non-starter. Serious pursuit of Carvalho could have started in mid-July.
Has anyone else noticed how much more quickly we secured Debouchy, Chambers and Sanchez when Wenger was in Brazil.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 15:36:26
The next "signing" I am really hoping for is Vermalen to extend his contract. For every day the deadline is edging closer it is much more risky replacing him.

In form he can be a beast. But of course there is also a risk having a player that is not motivated.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

05 Aug 2014 15:05:48
Not a signing as such! But we have secured the services of Germanys World Cup winning fitness coach Shad Forsythe! Great move by Wenger. Injuries are always our downfall in Feb/March! Maybe he can introduce some new methods to manage these better!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Where have you been all summer Zarathustra?

Agree0 Disagree0

This happened before the worldcup.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 18:04:21

Don't tell anybody though.:-)

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 14:53:30
If Vermaelen leaves would we definitely look to bring in a centre back, or is it possible Carvalho for example if he were brought in would act as the 4th CB option?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We would need to have a pretty much like for like replacement for TV. We already have Chambers covering 2 positions.

Fellow goons, I hope all is well. Not long back from a nice wee holiday with the missus and 4 kids and taking the opportunity to post while she's not catching up on facebook :s

First off, the Emirates Cup. As nice as it would be to win it, the EC is nothing more than a practice simulator designed to add an atmosphere of competitive competition. Results should not be taking seriously.

However it was nice to see Sanogo score in an Arsenal shirt and hopefully we get to see more of the ridiculous dance/Falling over routine in the coming season.

Joel Campbell took his goal well and looked lively. I posted of my excitement at him playing for us this season and was slated in reply's of people telling me he's not ready and overrated. In the friendliest possible way of course because we are all gooners I'm looking forward to writing a big fat 'NER NER, I TOLD YOU SO' post hopefully in the non too distant future. ;)

I've had a fair bit of time on hols to keep up to date with the transfer window and here is me own meandering thoughts:

Transfer wise I think we may have to wait on the player carousel to rotate before Arsene makes a move for a CDM.

(Please excuse spelling of names)
UTD is interested in Vidal and Carvalho, The Chavs for Pogba and khadeira. If UTD sign Vidal then Juventus won't sell Pogba in which case you would imagine Chelsea favourites for Sam Khed. If however Chelsea sign Pogba, Juve won't sell Vidal and while I would imagine we would be frontrunners against UTD, competition for Carvalho increases.

Rumours of Arsenal moving for Athletico Madrid's Guilavogui seem to suggest that Wenger's either trying to put pressure on Sporting's asking price for Carvalho or indeed again changing targets. Guilavogui is allegedly the transfer Sporting saw as Carvalho's replacement. The threat of missing out on both a large transfer windfall and also a transfer target might be what's needed to lower their asking price. If our interest in Guilavogui is authentic, it opens the possibility that the player might be included in any bid Ath Madrid makes for Cazorla. As it stands, it's all hear say and only time will tell.

I really wanted Schneiderlin to join us but I think Southampton are reluctant to see the last jewel in their crown go and are starting to listen to their supporters disquiet regarding transfers. On top of that spurs are in for him, ridiculous transfer numbers are being thrown about now and maybe its time we stepped back.
The board of Southampton will be licking their lips at the thought of a transfer battle between the North London derby for one of their players and will expectantly play hardball. We know Levy is personic enough to throw cash around simply to beat us at something even if it is only a signature so side stepping the situation might be prudent. As nice a signing as he would be, not allowing clubs to bend us over barrels over transfer fee's can only be a help to Arsenal Football Club in future negoitions. A we don't play games so don't try them attitude.

We've seen Wenger leave it late before to see what comes available on deadline day. IMO the closer Khadeira gets to transfer deadline day without being sold, our odds of signing him on a lower wage than 200k increase. Obviously if we haven't signed someone else before then but at a guess, as it stands, its either Sammy K or Willy C for me.

Whatever happens we are stronger this year than last. The signing of the season and 3 world cup winners in our squad is quite nice isn't it?

Thanks for reading bring on City and Palace COYG!

Interesting article in the telegraph mentioning why we prefer Carvalho to Khedira - money & injury history.

Khediras missed 68 games in 4 years due to injury. Obviously we have the Germany fitness coach now & he will know first hand how unreliable Khedira with injuries - see the world cup final this year.

I think i'd prefer Carvalho & it seems we do too.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think I agree. A month or so ago, the idea of signing khedira a made me wet my pants. But taking in to account his injury record, and now knowing more about carvhalo, I would much prefer the latter. Spyder from soton isn't in the same league in my opinion. I think his ability has been over hyped due to him playing in a team that did as well as it did.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 11:26:09
So the Champions League final qualifying round draw is this week. Looks like it's either Athletic Bilbao, Lille, Besiktas or Panathinaikos.
Who would people prefer?
I would go for Panathinaikos, bit of a journey but feel an early away goal to silence the crowd would lead to a win both home and Away.
I'd like to avoid Bilbao. That would be tough.

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Khediera IMHO. We still need to transfer winning mentality to a squad where the core are still developing. He is at the peak of his playing career and will want trophies over the next three years to continue what he did in Spain and internationally in the challenge of another league.

Hi folks,

I'm a 1st time poster but have been keeping an eye on the site for some time now.

Exciting times ahead for the gunners now it looks like we can finally compete financially with the tops teams and it's on this subject I want to ask a question.

We are strongly linked with both William Carvalho and Sammi Khedira. one is a young talent is one is a world cup winner with a proven record at the top. On that alone the choice seems obvious that Khedira is the better player but I want to know what other people think do you think that Carvalho could be a better all round buy due to wages and potential or is Khedira the better buy as he's been there and done it all?

All input is welcomed :-)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Welcome to the site aidyfrew. I think most on here would be absolutely delighted with either to be honest (and would be apoplectic with both!). They seem to offer a completely different style, with Khedira more of a physical box to box type who would slot in alongside ramsey, whilst Carvalhio would perhaps sit behind the other midfielders more. However both offer a level of physicality that we currently lack. For me, I always want talented players who can scare the opposition going forward, and IMO Khedira currently wins that race. However, it the price for Carvalhio has dropped to a similar level, I think his age will make him favorite for Arsene as he seems to prefer younger players over established. let's just hope at least one of them signs in the next couple of weeks.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 09:21:03
Is it just me or is anybody else worried about the recent form of man utd?! I mean the way they have beaten real madrid and liverpool even without van persie is a bit disturbing! We should get a world class dm and not experiment with chambers there or anybody else for that matter. I won't be too dissapointed if we don't win the league but I can't stand the thought of Manchester United finishing above us this season! Any theories on how Manchester United won't make top 4 this season are welcome!:) COYG

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - friendlies mean nothing G4L, but they will be a threat imo, not having european football will help them a lot, just like it helped scousehampton last year..

They will be much much stronger this season we all know that which will make finishing top four probably the toughest its ever been, it going to be a cracking season.

Agree0 Disagree0

It is form in March and April that matter

Agree0 Disagree0

You can't really read anything in pre-seson freindlies. I am not convinced than Manchester United will do much better than last year but it does ofocurse depend what players they bring in now.

For me they are still a fair way behind Man City and Chelsea which still have the strongest squads and indeed behind us in sqaud depth in particular midfeild.

I reckon it is Us, Man City and Chelsea for top spot with Liverpool now without Suarez now fighting with Utd for 4th.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 13:08:29
Well it's how you do over the whole season that really matters lol. No good just doing well in pre season or march/April. lol

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 13:16:52
What Ed 25 said. They will be improved, better organized and rested. But can they make a defence out of Smalling Jones Evans and Keane with Young at wing back? Interesting that two of those players Wenger really admired and tried to get for their attacking potential. Not sure if that argues for their defensive qualities LOL! And if Fletcher is injured, they have midfield problems. Still an unbalanced squad. They will challenge if they can remain consistent.

TBH I think all last years top 5 have a lack of balance one way or another, from Chelskis "Stoke on steroids" approach to City's prima donnas and mental fragility.

Agree0 Disagree0

D16

you funny f***** you know what I mean, if you can win 7 or 8 matches in March / April time you have a chance of winning the PL, infact last season we had a good April ( fixtures helped) if you look at the month of March that was the nail in the coffin

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 08:31:59
Carvalho would be a great signing but think we must realize what we are getting - a raw, talented young player that will be learning from Arteta/Flamini maybe even Diaby. Might even be cover for CB.

He might be Viera but in a year or two. I would love the signing but don't be surprised if he is sitting on the bench for some of our biggest matches. Wenger likes the vets at crunch time.

Just sayin'

Believable0 Unbelievable0

05 Aug 2014 22:58:18
Good point RR,
Thing is, we don't need him to be Viera straight off the bat, with the quality he'll have around him, we'd just need him to do his job, protecting the back 4 and recycling the ball. I think he can slot in and do that straight away. Just needs to keep it simple.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 08:10:56
After watching Arsenal vs Benfica I was really pleased with Ramsey, Bellerin and Chambers. They looked fantastic and comfortable on the ball. Still not sure on Sanogo, yes he scored 4, but they were tap ins. I think he's promising although should be loaned out.

What you guys think?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The job of a centre forward is to score tap-ins, if he can get himself in the right place more often than not he can be on the end of our creative players work

Agree0 Disagree0

Giroud missed tap-ins all the time last season

Agree0 Disagree0

I actually thought 2 of Sanogo's goals were pretty impressive, plus his positioning to get in the right areas was very good. I still don't think he's ready based on prior performances though - we need someone more reliable. I'd like to see Joel Campbell given a chance, he looked very promising.

Agree0 Disagree0

Goonerink

That is a bit of an exaggeration, OG bagged 22 goals .

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh I wasnt directly slating giroud.

just saying, he missed tap ins.
sanogo looks like a big holding cf, but he plays more like a fox in the box.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Aug 2014 05:13:51
So, a lot of people would suggest we need a DM and a CB, even before replacing TV. Carvalho is a DM who can play CB. Just saying, Mr.Wenger.
