Blimey,
What's going on?
Optimists, fantasists, realists.
Have I tuned into a porno channel?

We went to Bayern, best team on the planet (arguably) , with half a team, got stuffed and came back with our tails between our legs.

It happens. We are all Gooners on here and we all have different opinions. Sure, some of us are more optimistic than others, some more pessimistic, but we share the same values and want the same things.

Not going to mention names, but a few people on here said we were going to lose last night, I was one of them. I was right, but I sure don't take any joy from it.

I also think it's best if we get knocked out of CL so we can concentrate on Prem League.
That's not defeatist, that's being realistic.

You cannot put anybody in a bracket or pigeon hole them. If we play City away, I think we will lose, therefore I'm being realistic or pessimistic, but also being practical.

If we play Stoke at home, I think we will win, therefore I'm being realistic and optimistic.

We are all of the above, at times we are realistic and optimistic, other times defeatist and pessimistic, depends on who we are playing and how many injuries we have.

But, we are all Gooners. That's all that matters.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm going to start a gooners nonconformist group but I won't be going to any meetings and will consider anyone who does a right spududislike.

Football is such a model sport these days. FIFA stinks. Both Messi and Neymar under investigation for tax fraud. And now this Benzema business.
Very hard to imagine from my humble yet comfortable financial position why anyone high up in football (player or official) feels the need to fatten their already obscenely fat coffers.
Benzema could well be innocent of all wrong doing but it is not a good look. Perhaps we dodged a bullet by not getting him. One would think at the very least it could affect how well he plays.

Thanks for pulling that Barcelona fact out the bag positive.

Banbury and the realist crew lol are like Jim Carey in liar liar just got to tell the the truth πŸ€”

All family on here can only get a bit annoyed with a fellow gunner. Like your kids they sometimes p you off but you will always love them πŸ’—πŸ˜πŸ’—.

Indeed but Derby answered it so well, they did something about and had done it in the CL we haven't and I doubt we would go and sign a worldy on the back of it

so blimey o riley you lot do not compare us with Barcelona, we are worlds apart.

Fantasist or Realist hmmmmmm lol.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

05 Nov 2015 20:31:06
Banbury you are a fantasist. No one has compared us to barca. No one not me not the guy down the road or his dog. That's what you keep hearing in your head. I can't be bothered to explain what you keep missing, so let's just forget it hey.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 20:58:22
Im a fantasist, but that's for another site.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I knew I had seen that gimp mask somewhere before!}

05 Nov 2015 21:01:47
We are also worlds apart from Barcelona when it comes to the transfer market, not only can they and do they spend vast amounts on a single player they can also on a par with Madrid attract any player they like.

It makes it a mute point to be honest. We are building nicely and despite the likes of Derby (no offence mate) wanting us to spunk vast amounts simply because it's in the bank, they have to realise it ain't going to happen.

Us REALISTS we understand that, so we don't harp on about it. ;-)

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 21:06:56
City have finished winners, runners up, winners, runners up in the last 4 seasons and they are a long long way behind Bayern Barcelona and Real. Sorry Dercity but its true :-)
One step at a time so let's worry about finishing above city in the premier league before we start worrying about the champions league giant's.
Its a bit like worrying about the how much they insurance is on a Ferrari when your struggling to find your bus fare to work towards the end of the month.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Nov 2015 09:15:10
red dog i hear you mate. but the puma deal each year says we can. i'm not saying the heights of city 50 mill 50 mill and 30 odd mill on otamendi but the least we can ask is at least one world class signing a year.

no excuse at all for not signing a player last summer. if i was puma i would want a player as part of the shirt deal. why because it means more shirts being sold.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 18:50:05
Just a thought here guys!

as an Arsenal fan if we beat Spurs that's the norm and if we loose it's a disaster

As a Spurs fan if they win its dream land, over the moon a giant killing, if they loose it's the norm.

So because of that I always feel there is more on offer for the Spurs fans, it's the game of the year for Spurs but it's only our 3/4 most important game, United, city and Chelsea all bigger games maybe the Liverpool games above it too?

What you think guys.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

05 Nov 2015 19:25:23
Yes and no IMO, in terms of long term ambition its just another banana skin against premier league inferiors but in rivalry terms its big boost for the winners and a mega downer to have to pick yourself up from for the despicable shameful embarrassing humiliating loses :-)
But I'd lose rather lose 10 0 Sunday and be champions come May than win 10 0 and finish up with the dreaded 4th place trophy that's for sure.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 19:38:28

It's Spurs cup final come Sunday for us it just another Derby.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 21:06:00
I'm looking forward to it but no more than any other game . The United game for instance I was buzzing about it 2 weeks before. I do feel that it won't go as well as the United game for us because our players were up for it big time, just hope they can get the same get up and go over the smaller clubs and not relax and think it's only Spurs!

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 21:07:23
Lol it's the norm to beat spurs did you beat us twice last season no. And your record over the last few years at whl is dreadful.

Agree1 Disagree1

05 Nov 2015 22:16:21
It's just the norm to laugh at your club raver .

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 22:19:18
You have won twice at our ground in the leauge over the past 23 years just shy of 1/4 of a decade.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 18:27:50
Ok I Don't Wanna Step on Anyone's Toes it's just banter. Am an optimist through and through, although i can see our weaknesses as a Club.

Now the reason am slightly angry is because when we win (and comprehensively so) our resident realists warn us against hysteria but they do the opposite when we lose, yeah we got beat embarrassingly but no one even gave us a prayer over the 2 legs. Please let's just move on from this disappointment and no in fighting we are all gooners, passion tends to get the best of us
Banbury didn't Barcelona get popped 4-0 over there 2 seasons ago, and 7-0 over 2 legs?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

05 Nov 2015 18:41:53
Thanks for pulling that Barcelona fact out the bag positive.

Banbury and the realist crew lol are like Jim Carey in liar liar just got to tell the the truth πŸ€”

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 18:54:05
We get beat every year by a better team. Barcelona lost heavily yes. But they went away signed a top striker etc and won the treble. Sooner or later these defeats have to tell us something.

May be wrong but I think it's our heaviest euro defeat.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 19:13:42
Over negative reactions to last night IMO I just don't get why it was embarrassing, Bayern were supertasticly brilliant and we kept going for 90 minutes.
Now Chelsea on Arsenes 1000th game now that was embarrassing not to mention spineless and weak against a side that were light years away from Bayern Munich class.
Sometimes you've just got to congratulate your opponents, much like Villa did v us in the cup final.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 19:58:52
It wasn't embarrassing 62, how can it be with so many players out, I don't agree in congratulating them, let's take 9 or 10 first teamers out of their squad and see how they get on.

You have to take the whole picture. I don't care what anyone says as soon as we lost Ramsey, Ox and Walcott we were heading for a defeat not aheavy one but a defeat, the loss of Kos and Bellerin made a thrashing odds on. that's realism whether Grow likes it or not.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 20:14:07
Im sorry I get embarrased when we get beat 1-0. So last night I changed my name and got a new identity, for the 12th time in the last 5 years.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 21:08:31
Banbury I was under no illusion that it could have been that score, your missing the point I'm well aware that the squad was far from ideal going into a game with arguably the best team in Europe . What's confusing you Banbury.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 16:10:38
Being a realist, if I can be for a minute, I think we will beat spuds on sunday, we are at home and we have cech. The pessimist in me says we have a lot of injuries at the moment. The optomist in me says yes but only two or three of those ( kos depending) would start, the rest would be on the bench or down the pub. The pessimist in me says all of the ones missing are flyers and the ones coming in are plodders. Mmmm now i'm worrying myself. Anyway spuds are spuds and are always in our shadow so chin up, easy win, maybe.

Spurs will tear Arsenal apart this weekend and Arsenal will start a terrible run just like they do every year.

Agree0 Disagree2

05 Nov 2015 18:27:04
If Arsenal have a terrible run every year and Arsenal have finished above you for decades yes decades how terrible are the Spurs bad runs or a you consistently average? Help me out which is it TOT66.

Agree2 Disagree1

05 Nov 2015 15:26:25
I believe there is a strong possibility that we will still qualify for the knockout stage of the CL. We have to beat Zagreb at home and Olympiacos 2-0 away, whilst Olympiacos lose away at Bayern.
After the International break players will start to return. In any event, we still have a strong team.
Lets get behind Wenger and the team against the Toot at the weekend.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

05 Nov 2015 11:42:25
Ok let me get this straight, when this good team beat what everyone described as a great team our good team still remained just a good team.

When this good team minus four of the original team gets turned over by a full strength Bayern we are in fact worse than good and worse still look at our team with rose tinted glasses. Some of us hoped to get something out of the game, is that not what fans do even if we expect the opposite. ;-)

So the "realists" (lol) as they have christened themselves appear to want it every way that suits.

Now take last night, we put out the team that played at the Emirates but Munich have their same line up as last night but then drop out Lewandowski, Thiago, Muller and Lahm and like us have nothing on the bench, where as we have Welbeck, Chamberlain and Wilshere sat on ours.

Who then wins last night, is it the great Bayern Munich or the good Arsenal side.

Whilst I appreciate we only have ourselves to blame for injuries etc we are simply not just a good side, we are a lot better than that. I am also not saying we are the bloody Invincibles but you'd think we were total rubbish the way some go on.

Please don't take offence anyone as I mean none. ;-)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

05 Nov 2015 12:23:55
Completely right Red dog, Supporting the team you love and having fingers crossed in tough games doesn't mean you wear rose tinted glasses, same as speaking out about our so called weaknesses time and again doesn't mean your not a loyal gooner. The thing that makes football the greatest is the emotions, expectations and unfortunately the disappointments.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 12:56:38
We needed a defensive minded midfielder yesterday instead of Cazorla. I know cazorla is a very good player but we needed someone who can defend better. Hope Wilshere can be that player, but his fitness will always be an issue I feel. We badly missed koscielny and ramsey yesterday. Gabriel is good enough for the league, but needs some more experience before he can start in the really big matches like yesterdays. Also poor play from chambers yesterday for the 5th, for someone who lacks pace and playing at DM, he got caught way high up the field.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 12:58:14
I thought some of our play was very good last night, crisp passing at times . Bayern are a fantastic team, just a shame that the same old injury lists hamper us again. We need to just put the result behind us now and focus on beating that team led by the the clay man! Hopefully our team will take out any frustrations or anger on spuds .

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 15:08:30
I think the bottom line is, we went to Bayern, arguably the best team in the world, shorn of injuries.

If we both had our strongest 11 it could have gone either way, but we didn't and the score reflected that fact.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 15:10:59
We are a vastly improved team on 2 years ago when we were top of the table on new years day, we are not the same gullible soft middled predictable Arsenal who always got done by top 4 opposition and sucker punched and bullied by many others.
Are we champions league winning material? Of course not we're still along way from that, are we premier league winning materiel? I'm not sure but if we're not we are closer to being so than for a decade or more.
City have had very big player's out for a while now and are still joint top with us and now it's our turn to keep pace without some of our first chioce 11 being available, yes we've had injuries to Jack Danny Rosicky all season but they are all bench players but Sunday we simply have to beat spurs quite possibly without Belerin and Kos plus of course Aaron and Theo but we have to get 3pts to not only keep pace with city but to answer the question about our squad strength and quality which are part and parcel of big trophy winning teams.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 15:40:34
Bayern been without goetze, robben, bastuber, martinez, coman and ribery, for most of the start of the season, didn't play vidal last night. It not about whos out because that's all part of the business, it about who comes in and how you manage it. Plus no one has said we have a rubbish team, wheres that come from ( except raver) just a rubbish performance last night and a few others this season. People can say all they like and that's an opinion, but from my point of view, we seem to be treading the same path as previous season, injuries, not buying players for various weak points, back up players not up to scratch, but we are not flying or not falling. So a GOOD start not great.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 15:56:45
Gunner when we were top of the league two years ago in jan we thought we were the best and were going to win the league. People on here weren't mentioning the soft belly, we thought it had disappeared.

05 Nov 2015 17:51:18
Steve you've lost it mate if you think we're no more difficult to beat than back then, Le Coq and Cech add that proper quality to the spine of the team that wasn't there 2 years ago plus Monreal has established himself as not only our first choice but also a top premier league LB, Belerin is as good if not better than Sagna plus we have Gabriel in place of the past his best seldom available Vermuallen.
I'd say were by far stronger 2 years on mate.

Gunner its no what I was thinking, the perception or thinking on this site was not about our soft belly, it had disappeared, but it hadn't, it came back. The point is when you are flying you don't see the bad points, its when you are not you do. Incidentally I do think we look better, but i'm not 100% certain on that.

The smartest thing pep has done is put alaba back to left back. Lahm right back. And played proper centre Mids

He came into bayern they were treble winners and had to change something it didn't work as well. He put lahm in the middle and alaba in a back three and even DM.

Derby,
In reply to your previous post further down the page.
Am I happy with squad?
I posted yesterday about the squad, it went into 'Teams' post.
Take a look on there.
I'm fairly happy with it mate, yes you are right, you always have to evolve mate, but you have to keep it within budget and FFP guidelines.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

05 Nov 2015 10:07:20
Β£200 mill or there abouts in the bank. Ffp rules have lessend. City go bag sterling kdb otamendi. But people tell me we can't spent. Mate its bollocks we can challenge if we want to. Exiting the champs league may be a small wake up call

Anyway let's go win at spurs and get back on it.

05 Nov 2015 08:54:59
Didn't see the game and I am glad. However how is this for an almost first 11?
Ospina
Bellerin
Koscielny
Wilshire
Ramsey
Oxlade Chamberlain
Rosicky
Walcott
Wellbeck

I know it is only 9, not 11, but if you had another two good defenders I think that team would beat most sides in the premiership.
My point is that with all the above injured how can we expect to compete with a much closer to full strength Bayern? If we took 9 players out of Bayern's first 16 how would they go? Ditto for Barcelona and Real.

It is and always seems to be injuries that kill us off. I think it is ludicrous to say we do not have depth (except perhaps a replacement for le Coq) but we just have way too many injuries.

Commentators that say last night's result was down to us "doing an Arsenal" are really off target. It is injuries. The entire right side of the team was effectively missing.

Be interesting to see if we now have a November implosion or, as I expect, we weather this storm, win against Spurs and then get some players back. If we do the latter I think we will win the league. (As we would have done a few other times over the last 10 years if players like Van Persie, Diaby, Rosiscky and Silva had also not been so injury prone or unlucky. )

05 Nov 2015 15:48:46
Nice post Melbourne but you have just highlighted a problem or two that's never gone away, its still there. So if its still there how is is going to get better. We can't cope with persistant injuries to the same players.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 20:45:26
Someone needs to solve or at least improve this injuries problem. I know Wenger has attempted an inquiry into it but I have not heard of any results.
I have long felt it could be related to the Emirates ground as we did not get many injuries before moving there, imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2015 08:53:54
The new trend now seems to be creating a new post instead of replying to the one that it's relevant too.

Banbury no one has rose tinted glasses on the majority of us know what the crack is. But I can come on this site and whilst I respect the fact that people are entitled to their opinions, it's a bit soul devouring when you put your same opinion on here every single day! On and on and on the same opinion, and whilst I tend to agree with you and deep down most do know that we are a bit thin, we know now we knew at the beginning of the season. We also accept that games like last night were going to be tough and that a good result was unlikely . The problem with you and your opinion is that no one else is allowed to show a bit of blind faith, or try and be upbeat about the situation because low and behold in charges Banbury waving his sword of truth and telling everyone that they are crazy . That's football .

And for the record we have heard your opinion loud and clear. But every day come on change the record. And don't try and trash someone's optimism all the time.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

05 Nov 2015 09:24:03

Lol it does seem we enjoy losing 3-1 this season, its quickly becoming my least favourite scoreline! Genuine question now, do you guys think you will qualify now? I'm 50-50, could see you easily beating Olympiacos by 2 but then again you never know. As much as I dislike your club I do hope you qualify. It's good to see the English teams do well in Europe and my brother is an Arsenal fan so for his sake it would be nice.

Saim,
Just a quick reply because off to work.
I don't think we will qualify, we have lost 3 out of 4 games and the 'purist' in me says that's not good enough.
We will give it a go, narrowly miss out, and end up in Europa League, thus shooting ourselves in foot as far as Prem League is concerned.

So can we beat olympiakos 2-0 in our last game? Or do we have to better 3-2, such as a 4-2 score line?

If we beat them 3-2 it just matches their victory at Emirates, so it has to be by 2 clear goals. I think.

All joking aside last night's thrashing was completely different to those of 2 seasons ago at Liverpool city and Chelsea, I wasn't in the slightest embarrassed last night by the teams efforts or Arsene tactics in fact at 4 0 down I was quite impressed by the effort and quality of some our play.
OK I know Bayern totally out player us for 85% of the game but that's 15% better than the 2013/14 season games against lesser opponents, just saying ;-)

Likewise 62, it could have been 4-3 before it ended up 5-1 and the move that ended in Cazorla shooting straight at the keeper was sublime.

Banbury posted at 7.30 that we would lose 4-0 and I'm guessing that was as soon as he knew Koscielny was missing because that was the final straw.

My thoughts were with him and Gabriel we would have fared a lot better but Mert and Debuchy on the right with, I have to say, a pretty poor Campbell, was not a good option. It left Gabriel playing on his wrong side and broke up Monreal and Koscielny who'd been fantastic together.

I take nothing away from Bayern but with vital players out in important positions we were always onto a hiding. I think the way we played also didn't kill us physically either.

We couldn't have a better game to jump right back into the saddle against the spuds on Sunday.

Bellerin is still likely to be out but Koscielny hopefully back. Then it's the international break, hoping no more injuries there and others returning. :-)

I have to agree with that

Ospinia, Bellerin, Kos, Arteta, Flamini, Rosicky, Ox, Walcott, Wilshire, Wellbeck Ramsey

All unavailable, yes some wouldn't have started but you get my point.

Could of been 4-3. Could of been 8-1 etc They had chances too. Game ended 5-1. Let's move on and focus on Sunday.

Not bothed about finishing second and drawing Barcelona or real etc.
