A serious question Gooners.
Can anybody name a high profile player that left Madrid and went on to have a successful career elsewhere?
There must be, but I can't think of anyone off the top of my head? {Ed007's Note - Arjen Robben?}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sneijder?

Agree0 Disagree0

Sneijder? Huntelaar?

Agree0 Disagree0

Sneijder, Claude Makelelel, Ozil ;-)

Eto'o . .

Cambiasso, Figo, Seedorf come to mind and an older one would be Luis Enrique.

hyperthetically, you are manager of arsenal. its the last day of transfer window and you have £30m burning a hole in your back pocket. who would you sign? who is the final piece in your arsenal jigsaw?
mine would be michu, great 1st season, 22 goals, versatile because he can play in midfield and he doesn't come across as the "sulky" type if he was to get rotated. seems like a team player to me. oh and he's spanish so him and santi would be best buddies.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Benteke without a doubt.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think michu is not playing the way he did last year. could be because bony plays upfront now. or because defenders look out for him more.

Agree0 Disagree0

Have to agree with akie. Benteke, built like a brick outhouse, 22, year in the pl, will only get better, and a gooner. That would leave some cash left over for a defender and/or dm.
Flybo

Agree0 Disagree0

Lakerville I think wilfred bony will be the surprise of the season, he will score lots this season

Agree0 Disagree0

Mate. I don't doubt bony. he's proper built like a stone house.

my fantasy epl lineup goes. bony, benteke, lukaku.

i don't just go to war. I go for apocalypse.

mata wasted 3 games worth of points so bought on snodgrass to partner silva and cazorla. I will soon enough get ozil. at the cost of caz. as I have per and kos in defense.

Rumours s of Ozil wanting to join utd but them not wanting him can mean only one thing! We are being taken seriously again by top teams. Been a long time since we experienced sour grapes on a transfer we got and competitors didn't.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Typical Old Trafford deflection technique. "Our transfer window was a shambles, but we were offered Ozil first and turned him down."
Says a lot about a club which didn't know how to buy a Spanish player by lodging the appropriate sum with the Spanish FA.
Woodward makes Gazidis look competent.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think united didn't want ozil as he is similar in playing style to kagawa. the only difference being. he is 10x better

Anyone else think that the reason why Wenger did not go all out to get another striker is because he thinks this is the year that NB52 comes good and fulfills his potential?

He has got bags of potential, just has to get his head out of his ar**. Ed, you think Big Nick is going to see substantial playing time this year?

Thanks as always,
Trinidad-Gooner {Ed027's Note - not really, no

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Haha yea Ed I know it's wishful thinking.

I remember reading on here that Wenger was trying to loan him to Crystal Palace but didn't get it done in time. Just trying to be optimistic lol.

NB52 did say that he was fully comitted to Arsenal this year though! lol

Peace,
Trinidad-Gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

Wenger wanted to get a better back up striker but failed. He had a deal agreed to sell NB to Palace but he stopped it when he couldn't find a replacement.

So he clearly doesn't think he's that good.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi TG I think the reason we didn't go for a striker is because Arsene feels we have all we Need and in some ways I think he might be right. Betner will get his chance at some point in some compition and then its up to hi. If the ego has been dented maybe a good for everyone, hope so

hi eds
I am curious about one think(probably as meny gooners) you eds some time in a winter time was talking about ''big think'' at the club.talks was about board and Wenger.later you start to talk about big signing.But seems like Ozil was last day or two stuff.Could you please ''open cards'' (of course as much as you can) for us gooners that was going on at Arsenal? {Ed044's Note - Ed02 said there would be significant changes at the club by September 2014.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Thanks.i am looking forward to that

Agree0 Disagree0

Hopefully uamanov takes over. Can't wait till September 2014 now!

Agree0 Disagree0

We should find out by october who bought those shares and i'm quite certain it is usmanov.

i don't want him to pump money, just make bold decisions.

we have 60 million from sponserships plus tv money. and I understand we have outgoings as well, but I think we should be able to have atleast the capacity to buy a striker for 50 million. a proper world class striker like suarez or aguero.

and then just add quality players to give depth and challenge. recruit young players and keep it rolling that way.

i think we are one superstar away from being major contenders. let's not become madrid where every position has a superstar, and not getting the best out of that player.

Usmanov's just made a profit of $325 million by selling his shares. Hopefully this means that he buys more Arsenal shares. Ed, do you see Usmanov taking over in the future? {Ed027's Note - yes, use the search function

Alan hansen said in 95/96 season when utd lost to Aston Villa 3-1 on the opening day you can't win anything with kids. Utd went on to win the double. Everyone has wrote us off this season after the villa defeat, I wonder if we can prove them wrong?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I remember losing 3-2 at highbury to villa opening day of season and mickey did it Anfield last game of season to win us the league. Who knows if history repeating but instead of Mickey T it could be Mesut O. Here's dreaming

Just wanted to say I'm a Liverpool fan who has always been a big admirer of the Arsenal. The club is a model for how a club should be run financially and the style of play is second to none in England. The problem over the past few seasons has just been the personnel. My best mates are Arsenal fans and after a bit of a banter we've come to agree that the battle for 4th place will still be immense, still be between 2 teams, but it will be Liverpool and the Arsenal. Spurs, with all their signings won't quite live up to the hype. Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sorry mate but don't think Liverpool will be there either. I think it will be the 2 manc clubs with Arsenal and Chelsea fighting it out for title. Can see utd struggling and if moyes doesn't get a grip soon he could lose the whole changing room with a lot of sir Alex's old soldiers and so called big stars(your rios Rooney and rvp of the world) losing faith in it. Citeh will be citeh and **** it up somewhere along the way again because of to many chiefs not enough Indians mentality leaving the 2 London giants to slug it out. And with Jose already running scared (blocking the ba sale/loan) with magic man Mesut who knows? Just my opinion chaps for what it's worth.

Both yourselves and the spurs have picked up some good players that is a given. Nothing is won in September but it's vitally important to stay in touch.

United's window wasn't the best, Fellaini is ok but it says a lot that no one else really wanted him, he definately wanted Utd though. He did rip them a new one last year for Everton but the only other top 4 team they beat was Citeh with him in it.

They need to get a number of players including Rooney back on form, points dropped against Palace would not help their cause even now. Citeh have a great squad as do Chelski.

This International break is a pain in the butt as everyone wants their players back and working together.

I don't believe you will be the ridiculous amount of points behind Utd that Sydney! Has predicted. He is smoking some of Malaga's special stuff.

As for who wins it, Christ knows, but naturally hope it's us, I don't think well struggle to try and make fourth though. That trophy should be behind us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well, not really bothered about Sydney's predictions since he also said they would have won at Anfield. The truth is, minor details could decide the title (and major refereeing decisions).
I know Liverpool won't challenge for the title (even I'm not THAT deluded) but since the turn of the year our league form as been up there with Arsenal and the mancs. Arsenal's midfield and our front line should be something to watch though.

Özil seems to have moved to us for a personal reason. He doesn't seem all happy at the moment and I think it will take time for him to reach his best with us.
Imagine having the best names in football being shocked by your move from Real Madrid to Arsenal. He doesn't know an awful lot about the club - maybe because he hasn't had enough time at all to do some research!
So I think is very much for personal gain, his move here

Nevertheless,
COYG!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think he saw the light - they signed Isco when they had Ozil. I think he just used his brain and got out, he wipes the floor with Isco but Isco is the new hometown hero so to speak. As Ozil said, if you aren't Spanish they don't really care about you. Never had his name chanted but Isco was chanted in his first game. There's more to life than playing for Barca or Madrid, glad he sees it that way.

Also it's a world cup year and imagine if he was a sub behind Isco, that could jeopardise his international status. Germany have so many amazing ACMS. I think it was a wise move! He joined a team on the rise, that he walks into but is big enough to merit having him, we're a waking giant and he is now the future of our midfield.

after seeing what theo14 can do at the receiving end of a through ball, I really would love to see him played centrally now because we've got THE OOZILINATOR now. with him and santi feeding theo through balls even on counter attacks I see us getting loads of goals.

AW must be seated in his office ON HIS Swivel chair with a cat on his lap doing that evil laugh. BUAHA.

Who like me was surprised when ribary* went Munich a few years back because even tough they had great history in the Cl and at home they didn't seem to be an attractive option for one of the leading midfielders in Europe at the time but look at them now they can attract top top players. Maybe Özil signing for us is the start of a bayern Munich type revolution.
The only shame is the sugur daddy clubs making it harder for teams like us Munich and Dortmund t
But wenger seems to like the German model we now have 5 Germans in the squad maybe wenger will turn up to the colony driving a polo!

Have we the best midfield in the league I know we are a bit light up front especially with pod out and a few issues at the back but compared to the other big clubs I think we have the best midfield by far. i'm biased but city would be closest if we compare the two what do people think.

Arsenal; Rosicky, Arteta, Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey, Cazorla, Diaby, Flamini and Ozil

City: Milner Nasri Garcia Navas Silva Toure, ferdinho,

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I would think so easily

Agree0 Disagree0

Fabregas must be looking on in envy now if we can snap up Di Maria down the left in Jan window Fabs is sure to feel its time to come back and make Arsenal on of the best midfields in Europe just hope we can bolster the front line this Marcia kid looks good value on a free, leaving us to sit back and really focus on a quality forward in Jan window. the appetite wet and I personnly can't wait for the feast.

Agree0 Disagree0

With cesc saying he'd like to see out rest of his career at barca am starting to think we may never see him again in an arsenal shirt (competitive games). But hey we got MESUT OZIL the new darling of the grove. It's like McDonald's! I'm loving it!

Agree0 Disagree0

Cesc Ozil Wilshere Ramsey Carzola! Truely think that could be our midfield next season. The mouth waters

I did ask at the time as to what the wait was all about once the medical for ozil was done, well I have just seen this on the lfc site.
{Ed001's Note - not true, Ozil waited to see if United wanted him, they turned down the chance to sign him. Moyes didn't want him.}

interesting, he OBVIOUSLY only wanted arsenal because he is a gooner through and through not

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If we only ever got players that felt for the club like we do, we'de be disappointed. As long as when they play they give 100% then i'm happy.
Who cares how we got Ozil, we got him. Happy days.
Flybo (thanks to the Ed who sorted out my registration troubles.)

I don't care if he wanted united first. As long as we have him now, he can show united what they misses.

Are you bored chatting to the other two posters on your page Dave.

See you've been getting it from all angles. Did you by any chance listen to what Khedira said about his mate Ozil. No, I thought not.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its so funny how "players who don't want to wear the shirt should play for someone else" this has been quoted many many times on here yet now guess what "we don't care if he wanted united first" are you for real. I am not going to say your fickle because we would all be the same if we had a chance to get ozil but its funny he wanted someone else first, hey I know how that feels willian didn't want us first choice then he went to them. as for jealous I think I am among one group of fans who really, really isn't jealous I am still purring over the SEVEN signings we made and that was a nett spend of zero so no not jealous more curious as to how such steadfast fans can change. it is a good job he didn't go to united though for all of us. as for bored as stoner suggests not bored I love banter keeps us going in between games. good luck and let's hope that ozil can handle the epl as you lot seem to think people from the spanish league tend to struggle in this leaguie or is that just for soldado lol

So exactly as I thought, you didn't hear it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Soldago we'll do well once he gets the service.
Flybo

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh Dave,

You are purring like a kitten are you?

You needed more than 7 signings mate, signing £100m worth of players is not enough to even beat us at our lowest point.

spending that type of money on individual players does not make a team, that's what got your manager the sack from chelski.

Now pussycat, scamper back to the spud page and be a good kitty.

mmmmeeeeooooowwwww!

Agree0 Disagree0

Stoner, I am not looking to argue as to who signed the best players as that is obvious at present (erikson and lamela will eventually contest that). I did hear what all these stars said about ozil DID YOU because they could not believe he went to arsenal and not one of the big clubs. maybe he will return you to the heights you were but everyone seems to conceive you as an also run now, that's the bit through all of this that would concern me. I however think with the players you have and stay injury free you have a real shot at the title this year so good luck

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't care if he wanted another club first - he's here that's the main thing.

Some players may choose a club specifically, but most are professionals, who perhaps gain an affection for a club after sometime.

We have been 'also runs' as you put it, mainly down to funding the stadium, which meant we couldn't afford to replace the quality we had as they left, especially in an inflated market (thanks to the sugar daddies).

But we are in a fantastic position financially now, so there is no reason why we can't recruit the likes of ozil and get back to the those heights you speak of.

We the have the stadium, training facilities, resources, etc. of a big club- we just need to add a little more quality and then we can really start competing again.

Agree0 Disagree0

With all due respect to ed001, there are many media outlets reporting that United DID make a last ditch effort to sign Ozil up on deadline day but by that time it was too late, Madrid were not entertaining any more offers and Ozil had his mind made up on Arsenal. So there you go dave, believe what you want, but in the end, OZIL is A GUNNER!

Ps: I hope pool is not up top in the table by winter transfer window, because there are rumblings that Suarez could still make his way to Arsenal!

Agree0 Disagree0

Despite reports in the Spanish media that Mesut Ozil was waiting by the phone for a move to Man Utd, he had already signed for Arsenal, writes John Cross - Mirror

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Sep 2013 16:12:05
Dave,

Unfortunately like a lot of opposing fans and including a few of our own you fail to look at the bigger picture.

Yes we could and should of maybe pinched the odd trophy in the last 8 years but we haven't, what we have achieved was achieved with shackles on, they are now off.

Thus we are like Metal has aptly said further up, a sleeping giant waking up.

We are not the done deal yet but Ozil represents a significant start.

We have no guarantees of anything in the way of silverware yet but a minimum of 3rd and a piece of it will be a start. Then we will see a big difference again.

How your guys bed in and how quickly is the important thing for you but the race for the title I'm sure won't be the boring snooze fest of rubbish football playing champions this time around.

Agree0 Disagree0

Definitely LG1 a good versatile group of players and I think a great manager who knows how to get the best from what he has. 337, check your facts about chelsea and his signings also with your comments you sound kinda like a child. we, however were trying to have a grown up conversation between two rival fans (it is possible) you can feel free to join if you want. but it is true we did need to spend that ind of money just to catch up

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think they were surprised he didn't go to a top club, they were angry that Madrid sold him because he's the best number 10 in the world. And that he's a good person as well as a good footballer.

And at 42.5 million. Compared to lamela at 30 million. Ozil is a steal!

Agree0 Disagree0

Unfortunately I agree with the sleeping giant as stoner refers to, and yes we have to hope our fella's gel quickly and it should make for a great season. ozil by the way is pure class and am I jealous. you bet I am

Agree0 Disagree0

Derbyshire Dave may as well wade in here but I have read what his former team mates have said and not one of em have said they can't believe he has signed for arsenal just they can't believe Real Madrid agreed to sell him.

Agree0 Disagree0

If utd had the chance of Ozil he would be there now, they haven't been so successful over the years by turning down players of his quality who wanted to join them. Don't believe it! Won't believe I, he has always wanted to play for arsenal you can see it in his eyes when he talks about us and if you look back over the years at its always been there, the eyes never lie

hello boys and girls,
i still have'nt stopped smilling over the ozil signing and by the looks of it the madrid fan have'nt stopped crying awesome signing :)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hello fellow Gooners,
Just read Cesc's comments about Ozil being second best plater at RM and it got me thinking. If Cesc does not play enough this season, he will almost certainly look to move, bearing in mind he has only said he will come back to Arsenal and the fact he said he was Happy to snub United (Which had me grinning for about 20 minutes!) if he becomes available should we be going in for him? and who would he replace on the midfield?

Agree0 Disagree0

That's a toughie!

Our midfield is: ozil, cazorla, wilshere, Ramsey, arteta, rosicky, diaby and flamini and oxlade (Sorry if I missed anyone)

The players in the same position as fabby are: ozil, cazorla, oxlade and rosicky (I think wilshere is better playing deep and pushing forward) and Ramsey can player anywhere from DM, CM and AM.

But if he comes in you'd seriously think a top player would have to leave, but Chelsea do have willian, Oscar, mata, hazard, de Bryne and more! So it's possible that he could come in and replace no one.

For me that's what makes a world class team, not replacing, buying a world class player because he's available and takes us to the next level and that's what we need to be doing now.

Hope he does come back at some point in his career, we all love him and miss him.

Not an Arsenal fan but I think Ozil is a brilliant signing. More assists over the past 3 seasons than anyone in Europe, but aren't Arsenal fans slightly concerned he won't be able to reach those heights (through no fault of his own) when you consider who he was assisting? Not knocking Giroud who seems to be bang on form but he's no Ronaldo and to be fair I think gooners were quite ready to replace him with either Higuain or Benzema.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hig or benzema were never garenteed a starting 11 spot if they joined, wenger always said he's looking for super talent, but they would have to fight for their spot.

I think he will do brilliantly. And I hope mourniho is right in saying we are title challengers with mesut in the team.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think that Ozil is the end of our spending but as the start, I can see arsenal buying players Bayern Munich style and getting one good player (20+mill) per window as needed with a mixture of youth.

We have the money, stadium, training facilities and depending on who you ask on here, the right manager to take us to the next level and I think Ozil is that next level.

Giroud wasn't to be replaced a new striker was an addition 1 we still need. Ollie is going to surprise so many people this season

I can feel it in my water. Man United are going to have a lot of unrest this season and loads of disappointment. I'm hearing there's loads of unsettled players we have Rooney, now RVP and I heard of a couple of others including Ferdinand which hasn't come out yet but may well do. Could well be them in a 5th spot this season with a line up of Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea, Spurs. But I'm not brave enough to predict who will be in which position.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Been thinking this too mate.

Hearing Rvp misses SAF.
Rooneys head isn't in the right place

They've looked toothless upfront so far this season and long may it continue.

Where does everyone think united will finish this season? I'm going for 3rd-4th. Hopefully 5th ;)

Was reading that buttner has "lost his sense of trust" and much of a smile hearing Van glassankles is having a strop i'm sure united will still be in it at the end of the season.

Hi Eds and fellow posters, Buzzing about the Ozil deal and how it affects our season, automatically helps us achieve our goals not only due to his ability but also increasing confidence and ability in the current squad players Theo and Giroud will love him in the squad and could get 25+ goals each. 1 question 2 any of the eds, was there real interest in Rooney and Ramos and would we go back in for both or any other player back in Janurary. {Ed013's Note - There was interest early on, but not towards the end of the window. Its really hard to say if any interest will develop in January when prices will be higher and no manager wants to sell their best players half way through a season}
