The question is not will we buy, but more can we afford not to buy?

I don't think we afford not to.

Evening Gents and Jenny,

Ok, a massive blow for us today. IMO, Walcott is the one player we didn't want to lose. He gives us much needed width and an option upfront, either way, we just haven't lost Theo, we have lost goals too.

That said, he has been out for most of the season and we coped without him, so we have to plan the rest of the season without him.

This is how I see things, and a lot of you will maybe disagree with me. I will not be too heart-broken if we lose to Bayern in Champs League. Gutted yes, but not heart-broken.
For me, the CL is a step too far and if BM beat us, well its just deja-vu from last season and they will probably win it anyway, so no shame there.

FA Cup? yeah let's go for it. After all, you can win it in 6 games and with a bit of luck, we might go all the way.

At start of season the prize I coveted most was the Prem League. We are in a great position but injuries are taking their toll and Walcott's is a major kick in the testicular region.

What now? How much pressure can you put on a young 18 year old German lad called Serge Gnabry?
We have seen him in flashes and he looks damn good. But, can he do "the biz" for the next 18 games?
We need "the ox" back, but he's 3 weeks away from the first team, add to that 3 or 4 games to get match-sharp, so he is still about 6 weeks away from making an impact, in my opinion.

Tomas Rosicky is playing like an 18 year old who has just lost his virginity, he has found his youth again, but he is always one injury away from being out for 4 or 5 games.

We need Podolski to fire up the burners and play like a demon for the rest of the season.
Ozil? come on froggy, show us if you really are world class, like Ronaldo and Messi.
Santi? Fantastic last season, not so good this one, we need him to step up and start scoring goals again.

Jack? Fantastic or plastic? Another player who has to give his all for the rest of the season, he has to bleed for the Arsenal shirt. He loves Arsenal, he now has to step up and prove it.

Aaron? Great in first 14 games, gone off the boil a little and once back from injury he needs to start scoring again.

Back four? Brilliant all season, bar the Etihad, but I love them to bits and i'm not going to say a bad word against them.

We need all our mids to step up and we need Olly Giroud to really start banging them goals in.

Walcott will be a massive miss but if the other guys respond, we might not even notice Theo is'nt there.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Good post, and glad you wrapped that up with a bit of positivity dg. Love Theo and wish him well, but I'm more worried about the psychological damage this could cause. Mustn't let our season fall to bits as has happened in the past. Time to nip any self pity in the bud, move on and stay positive. We are Arsenal! COYG!

Ed, do you see Wenger trying to sign a striker in the window now all three who can play there are out (Podolski is not too good there).

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed027's Note - yes, going off the fact Wenger said the extent of Bendtners injury could force his hand, big nick is already out for a month, with Theo's season over I would expect someone to come in. Out wide isn't too much of an issue, we still have Santi, Ox, Rosicky, Gnabry and Podolski, hell Rambo and Jack have played out wide this season.

06 Jan 2014 21:23:47
Let's all remember we got ourselves 5 to 7 pts clear without Theo, he has hardly played .

100% agree, Theo is a great player, but he has missed a load of games this season.Wishing Theo a speedy recovery.COYG

Really Gutted about Theo being out for 6 months. He must be devastated, Get well soon.

I want myself to believe that Arsene will buy a player now and he will go big. a lot of people are saying that it is difficult to buy in January but, Arsene has proved that even in an over inflated window he is extremely astute at purchasing the right player. Reyes was a January transfer and he certainly had a positive impact in our invincible season, Arshavin and also more recently Monreal.

However, I have a feeling Arsene feels that we have enough already. Too a certain extent if he choses not to buy, then I could understand why. We still have Giroud and Podolski and Big Nick will return in 4 weeks. Theo has only started upfront once this season and although he did well he would not have taken Girouds spot. Therefore I think we will be seeing a lot more of Serge who I am sure is ready to step up, especially if the home crowd get behind him.

Personally feel that now walcott is injured we do not need another winger. Firstly we have serge gnabry who is an excellent winger and good cover and is able to do a good job. we also have the ox who will be back in 2-3 weeks so we are sorted in that area. However, I do feel that we need a striker. Someone like an abel hernandez maybe? Pacey, knows where the goal is and would be decent cover for giroud. Then I feel in the summer we should sign a big striker like diego costa or mario manzuckic. Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't mind us buying someone who will improve the team. Personally I don't think there's anyone in the market who could come in and do a better job than Gnab or Ox, so I'd rather we give them a chance.
Although I don't like the guy, Berbatov is the only striker we could conceivably get who could fit right and wouldn't need time to adapt to the prem.

This is a crucial moment in our season. A few years ago, Eduardo broke his leg and was out for the rest of the season. We ended up drawing the match against Birmingham 2-2 and although we were top of the league at the time, we fell away and won nothing.

Walcott out for 6 months is a massive blow and we all need a lift. Will Gnabry and Ox fill the void? It remains to be seen.

Will we sign a Di Maria, Pedro, Draxler or Reus?

Titles and trophies are own and lost on key moments. How Wenger deals with this moment will decide out fate.

Very good point, weren't we 8 pts clear at the time we went to Birmingham and yes we just fell away. love to hear what AW thinks, let's be honest who can we sign that will make a difference

would love to make a bid for rooney now we need a striker, so why not get a prooven epl striker.would send out the right message.
p.s saw all the spurs tweets about walcott they really are the biggest persons in the country.

One sign of a small club is getting enjoyment from other clubs disappointment. Unfortunately they can't rely on their own club to put a smile on their face. It's rather sad when you think about it.

AW - act quick

Hernandez and Berbatov are need now

Gnarby, Pod and Ox to keep the pace on the wings.

Think we may need a pacey winger also as pace really opens up the game and makes the opposition defend more.

Not sure Ox is a winger - see him more in a Paul Scholes type of role thru the middle. That leaves Pod who is better at running into the box than a tricky winger.

Would like a quick experienced in EPL right winger to expose the left backs in the EPL and give us pace and width

AW will not buy 3 attack minded players

Theo is a tricky player to replace!

Thoughts?

The one thing I really don't want to see is Ramsey played out there when he comes back.

I think Arsene will buy big if he has the chance

Agree0 Disagree0

Difficult situation. clubs know we are desperate and the price goes up accordingly. I still don't think we add any players this window.

Berbatov would be ideal, let's hope that is our last resort deal if any.

im hoping the ox comes back quick and then we can make up for theo loss. although we need a striker as assurance.

i still think its a toss up between pato and berbatov.

but possibly at this current moment wenger is looking at better players to see if they can be enticed away.

fingers crossed

Thinking of you Theo - promised to be a great season for him and an exciting World Cup.

Looked like he had come of age and could play CF! Always chips in with key goals and assists.

Difficult to replace for this season - huge blow

Believable0 Unbelievable0

For his sake I hope its a better come back time than expected and he makes the world cup.
Its been done before in shorter time

Agree0 Disagree0

Fingers crossed for Theo as it would be great for him and Engand.

As a Scot, I still want him to make it as I will be cheering for England.

As a Gooner and Theo fan, I want him there too

Agree0 Disagree0

Wishing Theo all the best in his recovery. Our season is done but he could potentially still make Brazil. If I'm being completely selfish, we could do with him having the summer off and come back next season firing and fully fit!

Agree0 Disagree0

Fingers crossed he deserves his chance, but I would prefer him to recover fully and improve our title winning side next season.

Theo must be devastated, having only just got him back and in scoring form it's a sickener.

The Ox is back in training next week, Physio room has him and Sanogo back on 18th January.

Really hoping The Ox can come back with some goals and help Serge cover Theo. No idea what Sanogo will bring.

Morata was an unused sub by Madrid in their game tonight, wouldn't know if any likelihood of him coming.

Would love to see a big bid for Julian Draxler or Marco Reus, dreaming of course. I think Arsene will have to pull something out the hat.

Arsenal ready to meet 32M buy-out clause for Diego Costa and Arsenal Officials rumored to be in talks. Any truth Ed?
Thanks in advance.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I would not think about "buy out" clauses.}

06 Jan 2014 19:32:02
Well that's Theo out for the rest of the season, and the world cup, time for gnabry to shine, hoping for a fabregas style rise to prominence

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 19:26:14
Gutted for Theo! What a massive blow for us, looked like he was starting to get some form together and was really looking a key player, someone who would share out the goals, we are going to miss him big time. This surely cements the fact wenger will have to buy someone in either upfront or on the wing! The plus side is the Ox is not far from coming back and Gnabry is looking good, but I can't see as a young as a player Gnabry is, to sustain form and really propell us to the title like walcott could! for me a striker needs to be bought in quickly or a winger as the squad could begin to become a little depleted with the inhuries we have already and the bad luck we have with players getting injured! I feel now this window could make or break our season!

ps. This is also a massive blow for england aswell for the world cup, shame theo will miss it and it is a blow to our chances of the getting out the group, actually can't believe he is injured!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 19:20:40
Not sure of the complexity's of it as he is on a a season long loan already, but he has in the past and in our side could be again a goal machines

Don't laugh! Darren Bent.
We could get him into the England squad and he could get us 15 goals with the service he would receive from us .

Would be a punt but who could we realistically get that wouldn't .
Thoughts please gang?

just heard on the radio that we are were we are because we've had an easy start to the season. might be wrong but I thought we'd played every team in the league, drew chelsea in the first round of 1 cup and spurs in the first round of another. we also had the hardest champs league group and drew the worlds best team at the moment for the next round and that's without even mentioning our usual injuries. any views on who's had a harder start because its baffling me?

Gutted for Theo

Time to buy Arsene

It's happening in Jan so we can fix the problems. Now fix them.

Theo, you legend, you get better pal

I have faith he can speed the process up in time for Brazil

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 18:59:51
Gutted for Theo as he will now most likely miss the world cup. Surely Wenger now has to invest in a forward, a winger or potentially a player capable of filling both roles?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 18:54:32
With theo injury being long term and b52 being a bombscare if we got mandzukic and a good winger mata? pedro? di maria? we would win the double for sure

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 18:53:35
Maybe Arsene will get the OX back just in time, saving him from dipping into his wallet?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 18:53:19
So Walcott now out for 6 months? How the ***** did that happen? It didn't llok serious at all and it originally said 4 weeks?!

If Wenger had any plans to bring in a Winger or Striker in summer will he now bring them forward to this transfer window? Or will Sanogo and Ox be like new signings?

Just think £25m+ on Di Maria, Pedro, Benzema, Martinez or Lavezzi could win us trophies this year. Our squad is so close but it lacks a cutting edge upfront.

Come on Wenger

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Nothing costs 25mill in the january transfer window.

the only chance we have is of approaching clubs who have financial debt and take their best player for a over the market value price.

antoine griezman, diego costa and so on. let's hope we can land one.

Walcott out for 6 months.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 18:39:54
Well that's just great. Theo's out for six months. On the bright side, this gives gnabry the chance to shine and show his true quality, however Wenger must bolster our attack even if its just a loan.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Walcott out for 6 months.

Huge blow for us. Gutted.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 18:32:45
With Theo's season over we need a striker and a winger now I wouldn't mind berbatov and Ben arfa but would prefer di Maria and Jackson feel really gutted for him he was playing well and causing teams problems we need a pacey winger edd any I chance of cabella or Ben arfa. Surely wenger has to spend now

Believable0 Unbelievable0

HUGE HUGE blow.

I take back my earlier statements! SIGN SOMEONE!
AH!!

ok, got that out of my system. This is a problem - but unfortunately, finding a replacement in Jan will be very hard.

Best bet is to look to Russian leagues?

Agree0 Disagree0

Theo will be missed massively, its going to be difficult to sign anyone even close to his ability in January so we have take a punt on one or two okish players and hope they come good.
Big signings won't happen in my opinion so we have to be smart

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Jan 2014 18:31:45
Damn, we never have any luck with injuries. Theo out for 6 months.
Do people think we need two forwards now in this window.
Big ask, both from Wenger and the market. Getting one top class forward was going to be bad enough, now we need two.
Gnabry I think is more than capable of filling the wide right position, but he can't go the rest of the season on his own, especially with the difficult run of games we have in Febuary and March.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Jan 2014 18:29:05
Theo out for 6 months. Gutted for him and us. I've heard some people say we don't need a striker. I could not disagree more. Gnabry can do a job for us out wide, but there is no doubting we need another forward up front ASAP!
Flybo

Believable0 Unbelievable0

With Theo fit we wouldn't need a 5th striker, Five, 5, seriously? But now he is inured, yes we do need a and other

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't class Podolski as a striker. He doesn't fill the plan A, i.e he doesn't have the work rate and strength to hold the ball up, and he isn't a plan B in that role like Theo, as he doesn't have the pace. His strength is as a left sided forward who makes good runs off the ball. Another striker was always needed in my opinion.
Flybo

Agree0 Disagree0

Podolski has a superb scoring record for Germany and for that reason Wenger will and does class the German as a striker . simple as

Ooops, I'm only now seeing that Niang has joined Montpellier on loan already, bummer. But what to people make of the Pedro rumours? Would Barca really sell one of their regular starters in Jan? Who would gooners rather, Pedro or Di Maria?

I would take Di Maria to play RW, especially with Walcott out.

I would be extremely surprised if Wenger makes a major signing in the current window.
We have 3 keepers. We have 7 defenders, an 8th would be ideal. We have many options for the midfield/attacking midfield, especially with Ox nearly back & a possibility of Abu Diaby in March. Attacking wise we have injuries, but Giroud will be back against Villa and will have had time to recharge his batteries. Although not ideal, we can use Podolski as back up.
I was extremely impressed with Gnabry against the Toot and Rosicky was also amazing. It will be interesting to see Wenger's midfield/attacking midfield selection against Villa, as we may have Ramsey & Ox back. In any event we have lots of options.

I wonder how Wilfred zaha feels right now lol went to Manchester United think that this is his big time opportunity after not coming to us and now all he's done sit on the bench(sometimes not even that) if he was at arsenal he would of been given opportunitys to play, see how he fairs. I feel sorry for him tbh, he left crystal palace for Man U and now Cardiff are looking at getting him so he will be back to square one again lol

I think people need to take a good look at our fixtures for the next month (while Strikers are injured - bearing in mind that Giroud is ill, not injured).

Aston Villa V Arsenal Mon 13 Jan
Arsenal V Fulham Sat 18 Jan
Arsenal V Coventry Sat 25 Jan
Southampton V Arsenal Tue 28 Jan 19:45
Arsenal V Crystal Palace Sun 2 Feb 16:00

We are playing at home against fairly easy opposition. Do we REALLY need to waste money on the kind of average players that will be available in the Jan window.

I would MUCH MUCh rather wait until the summer. We can survive these fixtures without more players.

Giroud / Poldi upfront
Rosicky/Wilshere/Cazorla/Gnabry in wide positions
The Ox is coming back
Rambo not far away.
Sanogo is. somehwere?
Technically Park is still on the books.

Support has been excellent these past few months, let's keep it up. No doom & gloom please.

Ideally, a young unheard of player is fine by me.

For me in the summer we may actually get a Winger, aka julian draxler, who I believe will come to arsenal, just a gut feeling, no insider news.

- We need a striker. I do like Jackson Martinez as he's a fan of Arsenal. Balotelli seems more likely to go to Chelsea than us but if he can clean up his attitude, I would like him.
- I'd like us to play Gnabry against Aston Villa. He had a great game against Tottenham and is surprisingly confident for his age. Looking forward to seeing him grow

Believable0 Unbelievable0

People saying he was 'one for the future'. If he carries on like he is oxlade's going to have a tough task getting to the starting XI. Seems like the real thing, so mature and like you say confident.
