heyyyy! saw some rumours of us being linked with mats hummels as well as reus again. could either of these possibly happen, eds? do you guys know anything? :d

As much as we all love the transfer window ( and especially transfer deadline day ) and I am delighted with our signings so far, it would be nice to wrap up all new business before the Palace game, so Hummels, Carvalho and Reus it is then! Ok I'm dreaming but god wouldn't that be nice . Also a question for the Eds if I may - Why are our germans still on the FIFA santioned holiday break yet Bayern had 6 world cup stars in their team vs MLS all stars last night?

Ed002 with Cavani's agent stating we had talks about bringing Cavani to the Emirates.
Did th interest fade away after we singed Sanchez or are we still looking to sign him?
Thanxxx in advance

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Forget it.}

If, by some miracle, we move for Reus, does Podolskigo the other way?

Ed can you I've us the scoop on those who are surplus to requirements?

i'm a bit concerned by AW press conference. this transfer window started brilliantly. I hate to piss on all our fire but I can't help but thinking that the main problems are still not addressed, ie CDM, CB and LW. From what AW keeps saying, ie no more attacking players will come in, Chambers in CDM and only a CB if tv5 leaves. I just think that if the cdm and cb aren't addressed we will still suffer the same against other top 4 teams and get bullied by others. Please god I hope i'm wrong but I have a horrible feeling that nothing else will happen. sorry to put a downer on all, I've had a rubbish day!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yes you could well be right. I think will only buy a CB now if TV5 does leave which is looking more likely now (Who I have no idea) He also seems to be hinting at using Chambers as a possible DM.

Yes Chambers may well have the potential to become a really good DM in the future but a bit of risk to throw right in there as our main DM like that at his young age. The DM position is one that improve on with age and needs a certain level of playing experience.

I can see Sanchez playing left competing with Podolski and Walcott competing with Ozil right side, with Cazorla being used more centrally.

For me we still need a another orthodox big central striker to give Giroud genuine competition. As without him I am not convinced by any of our other strikers to be effective enough at holding the ball up with back to goal and giving that physical box presence and a target to cross to. Sanogo yes he scored a few pre season but to me he is still raw unreliable and inconsistent talent at present. Walcott and Podolski have both already proved ineffective when played centrally on their own in the EPL anyway. I don't think Sanchez could do what Giroud does offer either. Campbell is like Walcott better out wide or with a partner. For me we are asking a lot of Giroud and hoping he stays fit and at 100% for most games is a lot to ask.

I didn't mention you because that all looked so happy when I left them I thought, why spoil their day now :-)

Reus

07 Aug 2014 18:17:50
I think Benedikt Howedes would be the ideal replacement for Vermaelen. World cup winner, another German. Can cover CB and LB, but not only cover, he can be pushing first team players for those spots. Good age 26, but not sure how much he would cost and what his contract situation is.

Ed an odd one from me, could us selling verm to united stop them getting hummels, if so we should sell them verm, would barca pick up the pieces and sign hummels do you think?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed027's Note - wishful thinking. We don't want to sell to Utd at all

07 Aug 2014 17:27:03
19.8 mil for reus if true we must sign him even if he's injured. Certainly an upgrade on podolski and Carzola for the lw position it would make sense

Believable0 Unbelievable0

07 Aug 2014 17:12:13
A lot of Arsenal rumours today! I love a bit of speculation!
1) Arsenal are back in for Reus and are favourites to sign him according to reports in Germany
2) Cavani's agent claims that Arsenal and Liverpool have made Cavani 'proposals'
3) Sportings President claims no bids have been made for Carvahlo

Some Good and some bad in there if true!

Personally I think; alongside Defensive midfield, our left side is a weakness, especially defensively with the lack of running power from Cazorla, so getting Reus would be a dream and a no brainer if the deal was on (especially for the price quoted in the media)

Turning Weaknesses into Strengths is what it's all about!

Wenger on Theo "He will come back into the group on August 31 - he is doing well but he's not ready yet"
Fantastic news! So looks like he will be back by the end of September?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

That was always the plan that he would be out for 9months with his ACL injury so, injury setbacks aside (let's not forget that we are Arsenal, home of the 3week injury turning into 3 months etc. ) He should be fit and firing mid to end of Sept.

So, some media outlets/twitter people/people/Dave down the pub, are saying Juve have an interest in a deal for Wilshere.

Now, I personally don't think it'll ever happen and truly think jack will retire at arsenal as long as he isn't stupid and gets his act together, sharpish.

But a different question, just for my own gratification, if Juve came to you and offered Pogba for Wilshere, straight swap, no questions asked, would you take it?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why would we need Pogba when we have Francis Coquelin I ask you!

Agree0 Disagree0

Without a doubt mate

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2014 21:11:40
I would take Pogba for Wilshere. Juve wouldn't. They're not that stupid. Pogba is a top 5 midfielder in the world. Wilshere would struggle to make the top 15

Calum Chambers confirmed for our new DM position (if AW is ever to be believed!)

"However, Wenger ruled out a move for Germany international Sami Khedira. "We were never close to signing him because Jack Wilshere has come back fit and in midfield we have quite a few offensive box-to-box players, " he explained."

"Arsène Wenger says Calum Chambers has the qualities to establish himself as a regular member of the Arsenal first-team squad."

"He can play a major role because in what I observe he has the qualities to impose himself in this part of the team. I believe he can play in defensive midfield and that's where I see him."

I hope he does well in midfield, but he looked especially good in our back four,
When he was playing with Kos in Emirates Cup (can't remember against who) reminded me of Per; and the same connection they have

Can't wait to see a more competitive game! Hope we really put in a good exhibition of Alexis, Chambers, and Zelalem, Bellerin, both of who I really want to see given a shot

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sorry, but is Kheidira even a defensive midfielder? I mean, he's big and strong, box to box, but I'm not convinced he's a proper DM. For Germany Lahm played there, and I'm pretty sure Illarramendi played there for Real this year, though last year I admit he was their most defensive midfielder.

I'm just saying, this isn'T the player we need.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think Khedira is proper Dm either more box to box really, to be honest for the cost to get Khedira I rather spent our money elsewhere as I don't think he is all that.

For me we still need another Central striker to compete with Giroud. Jackson Martinez seems to be screaming out to join us and he may be a good option that is willing to fight with Giroud for that central spot.

We will defo. need another CB if TV5 leaves which is looking likely now else we will be well thin in CB cover. I think letting Jenkinson go on loan was a mistake as I think he could have covered CB aswell as RB like chambers. I am always more comfortable when you have each position covered by a backup, 2 for every spot essentially.

Hi eds, just asking out of curiosity. Read Ed002 saying Reus is injured. Suppose if a club desperately wants to sign him, can they still go ahead and sign him? Or is it a compulsory rule that the player has to pass the medical? Thanks in advance.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed027's Note - they can still sign him...Kallstrom?

Opsina was signed injured too

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2014 16:18:53
Ed, am I right in assuming with modern day technology most of the medical could be done while a player is injured?
Medicals themselves have changed massively from the days of running around cones and jobs a good'un!

I know I am acting spoilt but I really think that 3 signings towards the end of the window really would take us into that new era that ivan was talking about, for me it would be :

Podolski or cazorla - Reus
Arteta - Khedira or carvalho
Verm - Nastatic

really think these 3 additions to our squad would have us battling for all comps even when our inevitable injuries occur.

Thoughts? and don't jut shoot me down please :)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

In a dream world I completely agree with all three signings. 100%.

As we are all Arsenal fans, we can but dream.

I can only see two out of three positions being signed. As for who, only Arsene knows!

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2014 13:25:54
Yeah all those 3 would be amazing and although might cost a bit (£50mil net maybe?) would make us competitive now, and important future proof our squad for 5 years. We wouldn't need to spend big again for a few years atleast.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shoot you down bill? No chance, instead I would rip your arms off for those 3!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Great replies, thanks for that. EG the shoot me down bit was for the expected comments calling me deluded but wengers cheque book is definitely changing peoples minds.

on another note just read that Manchester United are offering vermalen 100k a week!

Just watching the members day at the Emirates and currently they're playing a half pitch, two touch max, 9-a-side and players who are standing out:

Koscielny is so solid. A beast.

Ramsey is running the show spraying passes left right and centre.

Joel Campbell looks sharp and has scored a brilliant goal.

Alexis looks like he is desperate to impress but just dragging a few shots wide.

Players look sharp and fit and it all bodes well for Sunday!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Also, Sanogo has found the net regularly today and looks like a different player off the back of his four goal haul!

I'm jealous Greeny. Enjoy the day. Thanks for the window into the players form. How do they look mentally - relaxed and having fun? Focused?

Agree0 Disagree0

It was a great day. Well few hours. Mate and I went along to have a look.

Players looked forcused when needed with lots of flicks and tricks for the cameras.

A handful of players look ready to go and I will say again, Ramsey looks WORLD CLASS and it he stays injury free, he will make our title chances just that bit more real.

Alexis needs a competitive goal as he has a touch of the Bergkamp / Henry beginning of their career if he doesn't get off the mark early.

Agree0 Disagree0

I remember going to the very first members day at the Emirates. For me the two players that stood out that day were Marc Poom and Nic Bentnder.Shows what I know about football!!

So Vermaelen is on the move. Most probably to Man Utd. See Robin Van Persie for details.

We wanted to sell RVP to Juventus but the player (or the little boy) wanted to move to Man Utd, and that is what happened. End of. The same will happen with TV5.

Although he's never looked like the same player since his achilles problems, I still think that, given enough game time, he will get back to good form and prove an astute signing.

Still, we'l get a really bad Michael Jackson impersonator coming the other way if you believe the rumours. I can barely contain my excitement.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

07 Aug 2014 12:38:05
If he refuses to go anywhere else then I'm sorry but we should just be ruthless and say 'sorry then, but your with the U21s for the next season' At his age he can't afford to lose a year, then he would see sense and hopefully go abroad.
I like the lad, but we must stop selling captains to rival clubs.

Is Abu Diaby injured again?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He was nursing a 'hip complaint' for the Emirates Cup

Agree0 Disagree0

Thank you Red Rooster.
Hopefully he will recover swiftly, as I would love to see him fit and playing.

Agree0 Disagree0

That could be a 'blessing in disguise' as the hunt for a DM might increase at a rapid rate due to this.

Gutted for the lad though as he really is in last chance saloon this season, especially as his contract runs out end of June 2015.

I would still like us to sign a DM because I don't have much hope of Diaby staying fit for a week, let alone a whole season!

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2014 13:21:14
He's been plagued, no doubt. I like him, but I we never convinced he was a true DM. On use rare sightings on the pitch, he always seemed to play better on the front foot and in the opposition half, or event he opposition third. I hope we get a true modern DM.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2014 09:01:19
Apparently Khedira is quite happy to run down his contract knowing that next summer he will be able to get massive wages as a free agent.
Its a gamble by him because if he was to get injured during the season he could find he has a lot less options than he thinks next summer.
I think if we haven't moved on already we should give him until Monday to either accept our offer or live the rest of his life wishing he had.
The stakes are high Sami boy and there are many many midfield players but only one Arsenal

Believable0 Unbelievable0

07 Aug 2014 09:29:04
Agree G62,

Surely from RM's point of view they should sell him now and cash in, rather than lose him for nowt on a Bosman in 12 month's time.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed G62.

I think it is a risky strategy but he will always have SOMEONE willing to pick up his wages, especially on a free next summer. Don't be surprised to see Bayern Munich agree a Bosman deal for him in January if he isn't signed this summer.

I think he's missed his chance with us with ridiculous wages

Agree0 Disagree0

You do realise the club can't force the player to leave right? if the player wishes to stay.

lets see what happens of our transfer window, i'm hoping we land khedira, as it may give us an edge in signing Reus if the paper is to be believed.

The rumours are that wenger is the one who leaked it, or something to that effect what honigstein said.

Agree0 Disagree0

Most players would rather run down their contract if they can because it means a better deal in terms of a signing on fee and most likely higher wages as the buying club do not have a transfer fee to consider.

Contracts are there to protect clubs more than players in terms of getting some money back in a transfer should a player want to leave. The Players have all the real power now with the bosman ruling holding clubs to ransom.

I my book contracts should be setup arranged and controlled by the football assciation of each country not the clubs and agents this will give power to the FA or whoever and hence give more control thus you could then enforce wage limits have a set conistent set of clauses and bonus rules, and set conditions on when a contract can be terminated by either side.

Bascially get rid of agents that are just taking money out of the game have more transparency and stop wage bills getting out of hand and enforce clubs to not to go beyond a certain player wage budget spend in relation to income and ehnce get more in line with FFP.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2014 06:41:59
Arsene Wenger stated that he ideally wants 1, possibly 2 more signings. These I believe will be a replacement for Vermaelen, assuming as looks likely, that he leaves & I have a feeling a wide player, not the defensive midfield player the fans are expecting.
Defensively, I believe we will use Bellerin, Debauchy, Gibbs & Monreal as full backs, with Mertesacker, Koscielny, Chambers & Vermaelen or his replacement, as centre backs. The DM options will be Arteta, Flamini, Ramsey & Wilshere.
I still have a sneaking suspcion that Wenger may try to get Nani, as part of the Vermaelen deal and will sell Podolski & possibly Cazorla to balance the books.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If Nani comes to Arsenal, it will completely destroy this transfer window and I will be filled with rage and anger. Why would we sell Podolski and Cazorla(Two very decent players) to replace them with the most useless player in the premier league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Nani is a quality player & will add pace & width to the team.
Numerically our squad is getting large, hence we will have to sell or loan players out. In the midfield areas we have a large number of players, so if we sign one more, as seems likely, someone is going. The main contenders appear to be Cazorla (homesick?), Podolski (never quite fit in, although I adore his attitude), Arteta (contract up next season & struggling pace-wise).
The squad will probably consist of 3 keepers, 8 defenders, 8 midfield players & 8 forward options. This totals 27, but some are under 21 players, which don't count. We also have 15 overseas players, which only leaves a couple of spaces in the squad.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2014 10:03:38
Robbie,

You have this notion of balancing the books, truly a crazy notion. Understand it is your opinion but it is exactly the thing that will no longer happen.

As for Nani, perhaps you could pin point the last time he displayed any kind of quality in a game. He has been dog awful for at least two years now.

He was utter tripe at the World Cup as much as he has been in the league.

If he comes anywhere near this team that will be a massive backward step. Much like Hangeland and Kaboul.

Why do people think we need that drivel anywhere near the team.

This club is on the up, hard as it may be to accept, that is what is happening.

Buying the likes of Remy, Smalling, Jones, Nani, Song, Cleverley, Kaboul, Hangerland and any of the other dross linked with us is simply not going to happen.

Journo's with their heads up the ar5es as usual.

Agree0 Disagree0

We dnt need Nani at all. Instead we should just stick wit Podolski. He's much much better than Nani.

Agree0 Disagree0

👏
When you need emergency sense dial 999 and ask for Stoner

Agree0 Disagree0

Stoner - mark my words sales will occur. We have spent approx £60m & will make at least one more signing, probably two. I think one of these will be a replacement for Vermaelen, for whom we will spend no more than we receive. Whilst let's allow £20m for another top signing. There is no way we are spending around £80m, without receiving income on sales.
I would expect:
Djourou £3m (has this sale gone through?)
Fabregas £5.6m
Eisfeld £1.5m?
Podolski £12m
Miyaichi £2m
Cazorla £12m

I hope Podolski & Cazorla stay, but I have my doubts.

The above sales will leave us having spent approx £44m, which is about as much as I expect us to spend, possibly £50m.

Time will tell!

Agree0 Disagree0

Robbie

I think we all expect sales to be made. We are not naive to think we will go the whole window without.
The point is it's not to balance books. Those days are gone. The increase in prize/Television money alone has made sure of that. What did we get for coming 4th last season? 80-90mill ( I'm not certain of the exact amount. That alone is covering our outgoings on transfer fees. Then take in the 2 main sponsorships, Puma and Emirates. Both massive income increased on previous deals. With this increase the club can finance the remaining debt comfortably without touching the prize/television money. So as long as we maintain a top 4 position the potential to spend 60-90mill will be there.
When sales are made it will be because the players are not wanted. Simple as that. If we were balancing the books then as per the last 5 or so summers our net spend would be sub 20mill and important key players would be sold.
The tide HAS turned in the way the club can be run.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2014 01:55:15
Reading Nastasic is available. Perfect TV replacement, 21yo, highly rated, can play LB too. You have my blessing Mr Wenger.

Now for our much needed DM. It seems to me that Khedira is angling for a big pay day, which I don't begrudge him. However, we're not the club to give it to him, so, I think it's time we move on, 27yo injury prone player more interested in the cash than the club? No thanks. Carvalho has spoken about his delight at being linked to us, he's young, hungry and a physical specimen. Just pay what they want and be done with it! DM sorted for the next 10 years, who can cover at CB too. Seems logical to me.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

07 Aug 2014 08:42:15
I'd be happy with nastasic, as long as we get a defensive mid.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post outback.

I agree on both. Nastatic could be quality given some coaching and staying injury free (which does always happen at Arsenal!)

Carvalho is a beast and could be just the answer for our DM position.
