Now it looks as TV is going I think we will get one more signing and it will be one to cove the gap he leaves .

I am convinced we won't be seeing anymore 'stars'

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Looking at 3 defensive mids, and if something comes up late, which I think will, then we can expect another 'ozil' signing at the very end. & no that was not me guessing.

Love Rosicky - injuries really robbed us of a great player

Could have been a great captain

“It is a big club with big ambition and for me it was always worth fighting for it. That’s why I have been here so long. Was I happy that we didn’t win for so long? Of course I wasn’t. I just wanted to stick around and fight for it. This is a club that is worth fighting for.”

Congratulations 007 it seems you do only live twice after all Mr Bond, but seriously how many teams have qualified by default and gone on to great success mate?
Denmark euro championship for one!

Shaken but not stirred it would seem

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Cheers mate, we've still to get through the Play-Off round and unless we really improve we'll struggle.}

Ed007,

Can I post a funny Celtic joke?
Its not naughty but its Oscar Pistorius related?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Sure buddy, I've seen it a few times already today.}

I just read that the court in South Africa have ordered. that a cattle grid be built outside the house of Oscar Pistorius to stop him escaping while on bail.

Arsenal Poll of the day.

Is English Prem the most exciting league in the world?

So far, 27% have said no.

If you are one of the 27%, why did you vote no?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2014 22:57:46
25% now dags, but would be interested to know, which league(s) they think is.

Exactly MgM.
La Liga springs to mind but I still say our league is better than theirs.

25% is just 4 votes - not a huge sample

I think it depends on how people define "most exciting." Some may think that the "most exciting" league means that it has the best players in the world or plays a style that the viewer likes and therefore, is more fun to watch. However, that's subjective.

To me and what I assume "most exciting" means in the context of the question, "most exciting" means that the league is the most competitive in the world. I would say the EPL is definitely the most competitive in the world. You have Chelsea, Man City, and Manchester United (apart from Manchester United last year) always in the top 3 mix; now, Arsenal and maybe even Everton and Liverpool are joining up with the big boys. So you have a total of 4 and maybe even 6 competing for the title, unlike in Germany where it's just Bayern now, in Spain where it's Real, Barca, and Atletico, in France where it's just PSG, or in Italy where it's mainly Juve. Not to mention that the EPL has various styles of play and more world class players than any other league (subjective).

Great reply Messenger.

Agree0 Disagree0

Great reply messenger, have to agree 100%. I saw a lot of German footie on ITV last year as it's getting a lot of press and is seen as the new most exiting league. However I thought a lot of the football was naive compared to the premiership and ultimately with Bayern cherry picking players from their main rivals it's making the league overall much weaker. Give me the Premiership any day of the week.

Does any one else think that, no "big name" signing would be willing to sign for us until we get through the Champs League play-off? We got a relatively tough draw this time and the past few seasons we had to wait until we qualified for CL, to bring in new players. I'm happy with all the business we did already but I hope we get an out and out striker, replacement for Vermealen and a DM.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Didnt seem to play on the mind of sanchez

Agree0 Disagree0

This was said when we clinched the 4th place trophy and Sanchez and co didn't seem to deterred so I don't think its the problem people somtimes (media) like to think it is.
Just think we've had a great summer but if we'd finished 3rd we'd have Messi Ranaldo the whole Bayern team queuing up to join us :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2014 22:07:42
I don't think it will make too much difference.

We have a reputation of being a Champion's league 'regular', so I don't think a qualifying round will make too much difference to any prospective new signing.

ED007,

Celtic?

Happy now? Lol.

Personally, rules are rules and if Legia broke those rules, they have to pay the resulting penalty.

Fair play to Celtic.

£15m for Tommy V?

Love the bloke, but I think its good business.

Club Captain, but nothing more than a squad player, and would have been the same this season.

Like I said, good business, as long as we re-invest the money.

Got to agree. Arsenal have been more than patient where TV is concerned.
They should have put this one to bed a couple of seasons ago. Good player when fit but massively unreliable. Another one with off pitch issues that were affecting him as to the reason he was seemingly injured most of the time. Good move on Arsenals part going to a team abroad but as said its been a long time coming.

Lost his edge IMO, not that upset he is going

He is a fan. I would lose the plot if we could get him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2014 19:58:06
Top top player.

Can't see him coming to Arsenal, unfortunately.

Agree0 Disagree0

If he goes dortmund will be keen to not sell to munich. which leave the almost nailed on barca transfer or madrid. If eithe rof these 2 come knocking I expect him to leave. Otherwise i'd bet he will stay in dortmund for another season.

Arsenal willl only get a shot at him if the big few (madrid, psg etc) don't want him and he becomes available.

given the amount of expensive quality left wingers around atm though, (di maria, lavezzi) i'd expect this to drag on a while as clubs play the "ill pretend i'm not that interested to avoid being held to ransom' tact

General question to all.

Which of these young english are going to stand up and deliver this year in the league

Oxlade
Wilshere
Walcott
Gibbs

If they all deliver, which we've seen it patches, it would be awesome.

Who is going to get the keepers jersey? I'm not so sure Ospina won't play chez onto the bench, as fabs and almunia both did at times

Is Ozil going to turn up and be world class?
Is Ramsay world class?

And the obvious one - are we going to win the league?

cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

For me the Ox is going to be a stand out player, great attitude/skill/work rate.

Theo has what it takes if injury doesn't stop him.
Gibbs I think will be a very decent player no more no less
Jack? Toss a double tailed coin and hope it comes up heads I guess, its still possible but the odds are getting longer each month that passes.
Its between him and Joey Barton as to who makes the world eat their words 2014/15 season

Will we win the league? No idea.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jump on up little Buddy, Hi ho Mertascker away!

Agree0 Disagree0

Chambers to be the surprise package but I think Walcott and the Ox as Ozil will have a big part to play in our stand out player.

I am still not convinced by Gibbs I really can't work him out as for Jack even more confused.

Ozil is world class.
Ramsey in the process of becoming world class and captain.

Jaygun 1

Agree0 Disagree0

Good questions Baggins. Ox to be the best English talent not just at arsenal but edging Barkley overall. Chez is still developing but gets better every year. I can see Ospina getting a run if Chez has a dip but would bet on Chez remaining no 1 in a tight contest. Ozil is a tougher one as I think his contribution often depends on the quality of the movement of team mates in front of him. I think he'll do better than last season but we might not see his best until Walcott returns or we buy reus (dream on). I genuinely believe Ramsey was peerless for a chunk of last year so yes world class would fit if he reproduces his that form.
Will we win the league? We might with a fair wind and a bit more steel in the big games. I think we're close enough to dream but right now maybe a DM short of real expectation. I might be deluded but I'm hopeful Arsene is going to pull out a biggie that pushes us into the real belief zone.

G62,

Have you been watching your Grandchildren's DVD's again.

PS, love Toy Story, great film.

Agree0 Disagree0

Interesting topic and a question I always ask myself at the start of the season and usually get wrong! Anyway here are my two cents.

Firstly I personally don't think Walcott should be on the list. The last season he had being fully fit (2012/13) Walcott scored 21 goals and contributed 16 assists in all competitions. That put him amongst the best in Europe (for that season) for the wide forward position. Of course one season is not enough and he cannot be regarded right now as one of the top 5 wide players in Europe but one or 2 more seasons with the stats above certainly would put him in that category. I think he is capable of this but his problem is fitness, the talent and consistency is there in my opinion.

I also think that Gibbs has shown that if he stays injury free the talent and conistency is there. Leighton Baines and azpilicueta (even out of position) I would say are the only other left backs in the premier league which are in another class to Gibbs. He does go missing on occasions which is thoroughly frustrating but I can't think of many left backs who don't.

Wilshere and/or the Ox is the interesting question to me. Both have shown glimpses of brilliance but neither has shown consistency. Wilshere at home vs barca in 2011 and the ox v Milan at home in 2012 springs to mind. Whilst wilshere to me has shown perhaps more natural talent the ox has shown to be stronger physically and seems to have his head in the right place (he is obviously also extremely talented). For this reason I think the ox is more likely to be the breakthrough this season but if Wilshere can get his head down, I think he has the talent to be a football great. I know that may not be a popular view as most fans are disappointed by wilshere recently.

Just my thoughts.

So I take it the Matija Nastasic was never on the cards as Arsene has decided to debate the issue of the Lampard deal which for one I am gutted I think he will be a top class player in the near future.

Whilst I have been very impressed with the business done by Arsene especially Chambers make no mistake about it if we don't add a world class cdm the main issue will have not been rectified so please Arsene will just pay the money for William Carvalho.

So, Draxler quoted as saying something like "I hope I can get the attention of big clubs again" after only scoring 2 goals for a pretty decent Shalke team last season. I know Reus is the flavor of the month, and I'd do very bad things if it meant getting him to Arsenal. But, Draxler is an amazing talent, looks like a 20yo RVP. I'd be a very happy bushwhacker if we brought Draxler to the Emirates next season, even if it meant missing out on Reus. Or, have I been eating to many of those funny blue mushrooms from the cow paddock again, thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Draxler may well move this summer - there will be a little flurry of activity.}

Rumours are that we have agreed a £15m fee to sell Vermaelen to Barcelona.

Perfect result all round. We get a massive fee for a player who's barely played in the last 18months and isn't the same after an Achilles injury.

He doesn't join one of our domestic rivals.

He gets game time in, dare I say it, a slightly weaker league overall.

Everyone's a winner!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2014 13:00:18
Definitely a weaker league overall. I hope it's true, TV5 has been class. Not a public complaint about his situation that I can remember.

Agree0 Disagree0

He has been a top professional and I wish him all the best at Barca they need decent CB's for sure and he will do well there I reckon. 15m if that is the figure is a real good deal for a player on last year of contract.

I do not understand why people want arteta gone. Agreed, we need a new holding mid, but arteta is one of the most important characters in the changing room, and let's not forget his hair

Believable0 Unbelievable0

For me, we need to keep Poldoski, Arteta and Rosicky in the Arsenal squad for the following reasons:

1) squad rotation - given our shocking injury record, we need to rotate, sub off and keep fresh our key players such as Alexis, Ramsey and Ozil.

2) squad depth and competition - players need to play well in order to stay in the team. For example, Szczesny played really well when he was dropped and Fabianski was playing well. He now knows that if he slips in standard, we have a more than able deputy in Ospina to come in and WS will struggle to get the gloves back.

3) squad harmony and morale - now given the videos I've seen of Poldoski and the things the players say about him, he is hilarious off the pitch and you need that humour, morale boost and enjoyment away from football. Rosicky and Arteta strike me as two top guys too.

Our problem in recent years is we've sold key players and not replaced them and not had the squad depth to compete. That has changed and we must have a big strong squad if we are to compete on all fronts.

Players like Akpom, Coquelin and Gnabry to a degree can be loaned out with no real effect on squad depth.

Agree0 Disagree0

I believe it is because many of us want arsenal to achieve more, we can't be sentimental, we need quality players at the top of their game

Agree0 Disagree0

Jc7 sums it up perfectly.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jc7 its a 2 way street, by the same logic none of the players that left for City, chelsea or barca should be faulted for lack of loyalty as they all won trophies. Sorry mate don't buy it, always room for Arteta, Rosicky and Poldi in my Arsenal squad!

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed although I don't think he should be an automatic starter now. He is still a valubale player to have around with his experience and does have something to offer and can still doa job further up in midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah poldoski and tr7 100% they are still quality, it's arteta that worries me , he's not good enough for us but too good to sit on bench, he deserves to go somewhere where he isn't out of his depth, he is no defensive midfielder , but nowhere near as good as our attacking mids

Agree0 Disagree0

Love this site, have followed for a very long time, only finally decided to register.

In my opinion, over the last season, Arteta has lost 2 yds of pace, but also 2 seconds of vision in his head, he always thinks he has time when he doesn't, turns inside and loses the ball.

When he joined he gave us a calming influence with a great pass, but he just does not have the time now, he would struggle to start in the top 7 epl teams and sadly is not good enough for us, unless lower league cup games.

Away trip to turkey to play Besiktas.

Tough but I fancy us against anyone.

We have a fantastic record and have lost 22 games we've played in the qualifiers. Plus I think we've only conceded 6 goals in 11 yrs.

I'd have preferred us to be at home and get a good 3-0 win but at least we have signed Debuchy, Ospina, Chambers and magic man Alexis to play in the qualifiers which is a first!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

That should be we've NOT lost in 22 games!

Agree0 Disagree0

Away trip to Turkey a little tricky but I think we should be fine.

Is it fair for Legia Warsaw to be kicked out of Champions League for fielding an ineligible player for 3 minutes?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Honestly, no. But rules are rules and if you are stupid enough to break them then you pay the price.

I reckon someone is definitely getting fired from the admin offices at Legia Warsaw.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes

The player in question had been sent off in the previous round. Irrespective of how many minutes he played what a stupid error to make from the club fielding a suspended player.

Agree0 Disagree0

He was sent off LAST season and had a three game ban.

He served two games in the first qualifying matches against St Patricks and the club thought he'd served the first leg against Celtic and was eligible to play. Only problem was SOMEONE forgot to register him for the first leg so that game didn't count in his suspension.

Its amazing that some people are happy to berate Sagna for not being loyal to us yet more than ready to ditch Arteta for a much better replacement.
Its a funny old thing this loyalty, seems to only be acceptable one way :-)
Personally I think its time to help Arteta get a good move and replace him with better and younger option but also to totally respect Sagna who gave us 7 very good years then opted to make his last contract the best he could get. Sounds fair to me

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I haven't got a bad word to say to Sagna. He served us like a legend for several years and didn't put a foot wrong really.

He wanted a fresh challenge and a big pay rise and has now got that at City.

Let's not forget he's 31 and will retire in 4-5yrs so let him go where he wants and play for who he wants.

At the end of the day, there's very little loyalty in football. And, in real life terms. If I'm a doctor for one hospital on £90k and another hospital offer me £160k then I will take it every day of the week. It's life and people get a little bit hung up on the whole money side of things.

Anyone who says they would turn down more money is a massively deluded hypocrite!

Agree0 Disagree0

I am happy that bacary has gone , I don't begrudge him going for a last big payday , his best years are way behind him and the fact we have replaced him with a quality player and also bellerin and chambers for the future can only be a plus, we now have a r/b that can take on a player a whip some decent crosses in , something I think bacary certainly over the last 3 years failed to do at least on a regular basis, I do however wish him good luck and thank him for being a good servant for 7 years

Agree0 Disagree0

Forgot to add that as much as arteta is a great guy and professional he is not good enough for us now and would seem fair for both us and him to move on and play regular somewhere he is comfortable and he can get the best out of his game , he still has a lot to offer teams below top 5 etc

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree G62. We made Sagna a good offer be the chose to leave. And from that we have the current French first choice right back in Debuchy joking us.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2014 18:07:26
@gunner62 I totally agree with this - whether it those trying to get rid of Podolski or Carzola, or moaning about Sagna, let's just concentrate on the team we have, which to be fair is a couple of tweeks away from being really really good.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2014 09:35:00
Although Reus is a fantastic player, I think there is a risk involved in signing. If the rumours are true he has already rejected a move to Arsenal before WC as he badly wanted to move to barca. He even said he culdnt believe barca signed Suarez over him in interview! Now if we sign and he has a fantastic season i'm sure barca would come calling and he would want to leave for sure! Although I think we would able to get the money we spent on him, it would unsettle the team we are trying to build! If we are to sign an offensive player I'd rather us buy Martinez who wants to play for us and also a central striker which we need more than winger! Thougts guys?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We want to be better than Barcelona therefor need to sign players like rues etc, if we become the best players will not want to leave, we are not a selling club anymore

Agree0 Disagree0

Martinez signed a new deal with Porto. Reus is Class! If he's available we should try and sign him.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think you should not sign someone just because Barca might come knocking in a years time. How is that different from hoping that Ramsey has a poor season because if he plays too well barca will come knocking for him? You might sign Reus who instantly falls in love with london and Arsenal and wants to stay, and if not you sell him on for a massive profit and invest elsewhere. However its all academic anyway as I think there is as much chance of Stephen Hawking turning out in an Arsenal shirt this season as there is Reus.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2014 12:35:45
I think Reus is a brilliant player and would suit our squad perfectly. However, he's injured for one and a key member of Dortmund, who I'm pretty sure, want to keep it that way. If he's available, there'll be a line of clubs trying to land him, us included. If he does choose us, great, if not, we'll just have to flog whichever sorry club he wrongly chooses!

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2014 23:28:24
If Barca or Real come knocking for almost any player they will want to leave. just because Reus has come and out and said it makes him no different to any one else! Plus we would easily double our money if that was the case!

Well Play Off draw today were we could have either:- Athletic Bilbao, Besiktas, FC Copenhagen, Lille or Standard Liege .

For me the only one that could be a bit troublesome would be Bilbao so they are the ones to avoid.

The others should not prove to much of a issue, although a Trip to Besikatas not ideal either.

Copenhagen or Liege would be best draws. Opinions?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Copenhagen would be best and Besiktas would be tough.}

08 Aug 2014 08:31:31
Ed do you know anything about Rues' 20 million release clause that comes in next summer? I have heard that Arsenal will sign him next year for a cheaper fee, and apparently we are favourites to sign him.
Personally, I can't see this transfer happening, but I'm usually wrong :) but think: Sanchez:Ozil:Reus-lethal
Thanks for a reply ed

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Forget this "release clause" stuff.}

08 Aug 2014 08:06:57
Arsene Wenger has hinted that city tapped up sagna, I don't really understand tapping up, if someone can explain please. I assumed clubs just talked to agents to get around tapping up? Surely when a player starts pushing for a move example shniederlin hands in a transfer request, then some form of contact with another club must of happend to make him know he can move. When is it legal and not legal? Thanks, sorry if its a stupid question

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Players in the last 6 months of their contract can speak to other clubs who play under a different FA. Agents can and do talk to clubs at all times. So Sagna himself could not have spoken with MC before the season was over, but his agent could.}

Arsenal clearly have a problem, as quite a few players have ended up leaving when their deals run down. In my opinion, when a players contract has two years to go, a decision has to be made, whether to offer an extension or not. If an extension is refused by the player, then that is the time to sell. We have lost players such as Flamini & Sagna by allowing their contracts to expire. In addition we have had to sell the likes of RVP, Nasri & probably Vermaelen, as they only had/have a year left to run. Whereas we have made the mistake of giving long & costly contracts to the likes of Bendtner. One must question the judgement & negotiating skills of those involved.

LUKAKU.
With all due respect to Ed0025. I just don't understand why clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United etc never swooped him up.
Unless I am seriously missing something he has proved himself as a real pain in the backside to whatever team he plays against.
Lets have it right here. No matter who he has played for he always scores a hat full of goals which says to me he has got to be one of the most adaptable strikers I have seen in ages and! he does not need to have a season to settle in.

He is always ready to go.
I for one do not enjoy him playing against us as you know that he is the one that's going to do the damage.
I'm not one for stockpiling players but I think that I would have bought him in for us as I would rather have him playing for us then against us. Great buy for Everton no doubt in my mind about that

I think for the same reason they loaned him to them last season, but wouldn't loan us ba. I think they wouldn't let us have him or we would of had to pay a lot more. Here's hoping costas a flop and it comes back to haunt them, Everton 4th and Chelsea 5th, nice dream ;)

Its quite suprising you ask this Question, I have discussed this plenty of times, these Players Lukaku, Bony etc are just medicore players who look good in smaller clubs and always fail on the big stage. Just ask liverpool how many such kind of players they have signed and failed Adam, Downing, Carroll just to name a few. Its the same with Lukaku, and that's why he dint cut it even at chelsea, otherwise they needed a striker desperately. We have Joel Campell who can do a better job than Lukaku this I can guarantee you, same run of games.

{Ed002's Note - You are simply making this stuff up. Lukaku left Chelsea because of something else. They did not move him on because of his footballing ability.}

Aman. Sorry to disagree mate but as I said before I think, and it's just an opinion mind, that Lukaku is a quality player. If he can score like he does on a regular basis against! the big clubs then he has my respect. And according to what you have said if he only shines at the weaker clubs then he had no business scoring the amount goals he has.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not too sure again, it looks like only Everton bid for him, I just do not see why other clubs in the top 4 dint bid for him, it would have made sense for pool to do it, but they also dint try. I think he has the same stuff what we have in Giroud and Sanagoo.

He's not the kind if player you pass up just because he's injured. Injuries heal.

Going into the season, I am concerned about the balance of our squad:
Assuming, as looks likely, we are going into the season with only 6 first team defenders, if Vermaelen departs. Unless, Wenger considers Bellerin to be capable of first team duty, which I don't, he looks like he could do with a seasons loan deal. We need 2 more defenders, ideally centre backs, assuming Chambers starts his Arsenal career at right-back. For the first two matches of the season we will be without Mertesacker, so we will only have Koscielny as a true centre back & Chambers who is being converted to centre back. If either player is injured or sent off in the first match, we have no cover.
The defensive midfield position is also of concern, as we only have Arteta & Flamini, both ageing and suffering from a lack of pace. Yes, we can play Wilshere, Ramsey or Abu Diaby in a more defensive role, but all three players look more comfortable further forward. I would like to see a defensive midfield player signed & either Arteta or Flamini depart.
I accept the window isn't closed yet, but the season is virtually upon us and we desperately need the position I mentioned to be filled. Last season we played with only 7 defenders to choose from and got away with it, but we really need 8 players for the defensive position, as cover and to rotate. Perhaps a CB & a DM are the two signings Wenger mentioned he is trying to make. let's hope so.

Agree as posted earlier, he has not addressed the glaring problems fron last season, regardless of how you rate the signings so far.

I see we offered Sagna a 3 year deal and he still buggered off.

Greedy little twit

2 sides to every story I guess mate.

Its his final pay day, City probably offered him at least £50,000 per week more, based over 3 years, that's a lot of extra cash.

What price loyalty?

Agree0 Disagree0

If you look at the fa cup final goals absolutely no one celebrates each one more enthusiastically than Sagna, the man was a fantastic servant to our club and like you say Dags it was his last contract hell ever get.
I wish him all the best he more than gave us value for money over the years, unlike some others who left early in their careers at the first sight of better money

Agree0 Disagree0

It might not be his last ever contract. Dixon played till he was 38 I don't see any reason why Sagna can't too providing he doesn't have too many injury problems.

Agree0 Disagree0

When you are already on 75,000 a week it is a given you are cash rich, 50,000 extra is nothing to these players .

He has gone to sit on the bench

Just about says it all about modern day players
