Looks like Mr Wise shares our concern

Wise says there is not enough pace in the Gunners backline which will ultimately be their downfall this season.

"The defenders that he's brought in, I think that was a key part of where Arsenal struggled, " he said (via Express) .

"I think they conceded 51 goals which was quite high for Arsenal. But what they haven't added is pace.

"Sokratis is not for me. I watched him play against Chelsea and he got dominated and he lacked a lot of pace.

"Lichtsteiner is obviously 34 years old, hasn't got a lot of pace and they haven't added that.

So, therefore, I think they're going to struggle.

"I look at the personnel that they've brought in and the position they ended up, sixth last year, and that's where I see Arsenal.

"I don't see that they've improved loads. My concern is their defence still.

"He hasn't convinced me with who he's brought in.

Difficult to argue and a bit disappointed in Emery's attempt to sort the defence. Happy to give me the benefit of the doubt despite the crazy Chambers decision.

Is Mr wise Denis Wise?
Yes I would have liked to have seen more radical overhaul of the defence and the Chambers decision is still very strange to me but Leicester fans 2015 -16 probably weren't thrilled with the prospect of Hugh and Morgans pace going into that season but as I remember they were pretty awesome at the back that season and none to shabby going forward either.
Who knows but new managers sometimes get more out of the same players and get very different results with them than their predecessor did.

Im sure we may well get caught out a few times but last season most of the goals we conceded were just rank bad defending, lack of awareness and organisation, which led to sloppy goals. The percentage that were solely down to a speed race was minimal. i'm sure Dick will account for that in our set up. The player who actually got done as much in a foot race was Bellerin.

Hope so 62 as he has put a target on his own back with his first window. In terms of being organised: the Chelsea game showed we are no smarter. Be it corners, pissing around with the ball at the back or getting caught with a high line by a simple ball over the top.

If it was budget - then sell Mustafi don’t buy a keeper but buy a strong defender

Fingers crossed that the midfield really helps and Emery has a strong first season.

If we'd beat Chelsea 10 0 and denied them a single shot i wouldn't be thinking job done SY mate and neither am I thinking here we go again based on that game.
Is Emery really so naive as to take this job and not see what everyone outside Arsenal has seen for years? That's to far fetched to put in eastenders, what are the odds on Arsenal finding the only other manager in the world other than Arsene who thinks our defence is ok as it was?

How well Torreria settles in the DM role will be key to how well we do I feel, if he can provide that essential protection well it can negate the that lack pure pace of the CB's. Sokratis as it stands I am 50/ 50 on tbh and jury is out weather he can hack the pace of the EPL but Greeks are generally good defenders so we will see. Kos is still a big miss and I will be much happier once he is back. Loaning chambers is odd move a this point. Attacking wise we look good and I think Ozil free from the shackles of the National side can really shine this season and give us a A game. Aubu and Lacazette are gauranteed goals given the chances and I would not swap either of them for any other sides forwards tbh.

Defending is not solely about pace, but positional sense and timing are essential. John Terry wasn't blessed with pace, but was a top class defender. On Sunday we may play two rapid fullbacks in Bellerin and Maitland-Niles, whilst Mustafi doesn't lack pace. With Torreira adding much needed protection in front of the back four, Leno being more a sweeper keeper and Emery's new defensive coaching and tactics, we should compensate for Sokratis's lack of pace. I had not noticed him being exploited whilst in Germany. In addition the pressing style Emery utilises leaves little time for opposing players to make quality passes in behind the defence, as they will be under pressure to pass. Modern defenders need to be quick over the first 5 to 10 yards, which is often aided by quick thinking and positional sense.

Emery was right to allow Chambers to depart. Having seen him in training and in pre-season matches, he clearly believed him to be the weakest of our 4 fit CB's, which I fully concur with and I fail to understand fellow Gooners who rate him. My reservation is that we only have 4 fit CB's until the New Year when Koscileny should return and we are able to buy a CB. A single injury to a CB means we have one CB to cover 2 players for half the season.

I don't think it'll be as bad as everyone makes out. If they can read the game well I'm sure it'll be okay. Most importantly let's wait and see them play before we panic.

Dennis Wise hates Arsenal, what've they done? brought in jorginho and a quality keeper. anyone see his interview (jorginho) saying he's going to show the prem something they've never seen before? game passed him by, last two i seen him in that shade of blue.

They may not admit it but the new stadium will hurt their fiancés big time perhaps more so than ours did. They would not even go over 25 Million for Grealish which tells me money is tight now for them. Spurs on the slide I feel this season.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Aug 2018 21:15:23
The cost of the new stadium is by all accounts creeping toward the £1 billion mark, currently sat at £850 million.

That’s a lot of money to repay and to be honest Levy has done the important thing of signing up the best players as they go into a difficult financial period.

I imagine he would have known the plan and the conversation was to do as Wenger did, keep them in the Champions League, ride out the tough times and go from there.

Never worked for us but that is something they’re now going to go through. It’s how long they can keep players with no trophies and little money from now on that will count.

There team hasn’t got weaker but clearly not become stronger either. The also have to get over their ability to collapse at the big moments.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Aug 2018 21:45:45
With so many players at this summers world cup it's likely they will start slow and it's up to those who wish to pip them in the top 4 race to put some distance between themselves and Spurs.
I think Spurs have gone for consolidation by improving existing players contracts rather than go down the sell and buy route, the fact they didn't cash in on Harry should be seen as the biggest plus their fans could have hoped for this summer, I think it the past we'd have cashed in on Harry in their position.
Champions league money isn't the be all and end all any more that it use to be, 20 million taking part money isn't am awful lot in today's football world, it's a quater of the transfer fee of a very decent player in today's market.

Daniel Levy has been sussed and the Toot found it very difficult to unload players, which appeared necessary and understandable in order to finance purchases. In his defence he has tied up a few players on long term and costly contracts this summer. If they are unable to sell Alderwierald and Rose this summer then they will lose £20m on Toby as he has a clause that means he can leave for £20m next season, and United offered £45m the day before the window ended, Ideally he wants to stay in England and United was his chosen destination. Rose may go on loan abroad according to reports, When you consider the value of these two players a couple of seasons ago then the Toot stand to make a considerably loss on what could have been achieved. Both are very unhappy at the club. Dembele also wants out and if the Toot sell any players abroad, they cannot bring replacements in until January. Ina season when they had many players away on World Cup duty and stand to be without Son fora bout a month, it isn't ideal. The huge sort of the stadium is another problem, financing a billion pounds will be a huge drain on finances and yet another season without a trophy will place massive pressure on the club.

With Perez gone and auba looking like playing as a wide forward in either a 4231 or 433 if welbeck leaves who is the back up striker? Is Nketiah ready?
If welbz leaves he needs to be replaced.
Laca
Auba ozil Miki.

Nketiah or Welbeck
Iwobi Ramsey Nelson.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

09 Aug 2018 21:04:18
Nketiah deserves a shot in my view as first backup. Wellbeck is a good pro don't get me wrong but he his not at the level we need if we are serious about getting back into the big time. Put it this way I rather put my money on Nketiah scoring in a one on one than Wellbeck, which is what counts at the end of the day for strikers.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2018 06:37:03
I would prefer us to keep We;beck and extend his deal. He is only 27 and he offers quality cover for both the central striking role and both wide attacking roles. Nketiah has potential, but at 19 needs at least a couple of seasons to mature as a striker. Indeed, if we play Lacazette up front and Aubameyang wide left, then we need cover for both players.

Wolves, Fulham, Liverpool and West ham have had exciting Windows not. Complaining about ours but could of done with a few more players that will push into the first team the player I'm most looking forward. To is. Terreira seems like a little pitbull that won't stop running as for Lichsteiner he can play in a back 3 and is very versatile with experience expect him to start a few matches because of Bellerin poor Form sokratis hasn't impressed in pre season looks. Like. Another mertesacker slow clumsy and not very agile so maybe he needs teirrera protecting him I think miki will have a great season alongside Aubameyang.

Been a decent window as we done the deals early which is a bonus but could have been better. Torriera is the main key signing let's hope he can give that valuble back 4 protection we crave. Sokratis does look a little slow but should be strong and good in the air and hopefully lead the back line better, but we do need Kos back ASAP.

Lichtsteiner is good signing strong and decent enough on the ball and could possibly cover CB also but is obvs only going to be a short term solution. Guendouzi has been impressive in pre-season so looks like a good buy but one for the future. Leno not really what I would call top class but with Cech coming to the end a keeper was needed not sure he will be the long term answer in goal though, is he any better than Ospina?

I think we still need another DM like Nzonghi for the harder way games and also a proper winger would be nice. I think Ramsey should have been sold to get Nzonghi tbh

Daft that Chambers was allowed to go on loan as I think while KOS is out a back 3 with chambers as the sweeper next to the slower Mustafi and Sokratis would be more solid when we are under more pressure in the big games.

Agreed. Loaning Chambers and selling Perez leaves our squad too light in my opinion. Our first choice attacking options are great, but after that its Welbeck, Iwobi. that's it. not good enough.

Same with CB, Mavropanos and Holding are our backups until Jan when Kos is back.

Cant help but feel like we've messed up here.

Perez going has hardly left us light, how much was he? £13 million with a goal return.

So our attacking options to fill 4 positions:

Augbumeyang, Lacazette, Welbeck, Nketiah, Ozil, Iwobi, Mhkitaryan and Nelson.

Those backup 4 are likely going to be Welbeck, Nketiah, Iwobi and Nelson. i'm sorry but that is simply not good enough. Not saying Lucas Perez was the answer but we should have got somebody in.

Compared to our rivals bench/ squad its not good enough.

City - Gabriel, Mahrez, Bernardo Silva
Spurs - Llorente, Lucas, Lamela
United - Rashford, Martial, Mata

We start to lose afew through injury (which we definitely will) and we're buggered.

Hello Gunners,

How are you feeling about the new season?
What do you think of the result on Sunday?

09 Aug 2018 03:04:35
Extremely excited to start a new era under Emery. New tactics, new players, new manager and coaches. I would love us to secure Ramsey's signature and ideally bring in a player or two on the final day of the current window, but doubt any will come in. The major announcement seems to be securing Ramsey;s future at the club. Perhaps Chambers sudden departure was to free up wages towards Ramsey's contract.
Interesting to see the team selction and who will captain the team. Gut feeling is that Ramsey, if he signs a new deal, may be the new captain.
Cech or Leno?
Bellerin or Lichtsteiner?
Aubameyang and Lacazette?
Will Torreira start after his late arrival after the World Cup?

RG61 do you even watch Arsenal? Ramsey offers nothing over 90minutes. He leaves his position constantly leaves massive gaps has no pace a woeful touch misses passes most of the time! Oh but he arrived in the box well every now and then to tap one in. What r people thinkin making him captain? Most over rated player sell him swap him just don’t start him. Torreira should b the first name on the sheet a player who’ll actually protect the back 4 let's be honest they’ll need it. Oh MYSCORE BET 1-4 city they will blow us away!

MM - I adore the personal abuse that people of limited intelligence always aim at comments. Yes, I do watch Arsenal. Over the last decade under Wenger many players stagnated and often had to play out of position, in odd formations, with little structure or evidence of coaching. I have no doubt that Ramsey and many other players will flourish under Emery who will increase their fitness, coach them and play to their strengths. I am not sure that many Arsenal fans share your opinion of Ramsey and want him to stay. Torreira looks to be an excellent signing, but Sunday may be a tad early bearing in mind his late return to training following the World Cup. 4-1 to City, I doubt very much. Reports are that they will start without some of their World Cup players, including Sterling, De Bruyne and Silva. I can't see us winning, but a draw or a narrow defeat seem more likely.

Improve his fitness? Runs round like a headless chicken all game, fitness is his only asset. Please name another point to his game? Yes arrived in the box got great timing for that didn’t see anyone debating his passing or pace or anything else that makes a decent midfielder? Ramsey breaks my heart I loved him pre leg break never got back after that. My Scorebet gunners are hopeful we always hav been, city had none of those players last week either and made light work of a far stronger Chelsea side all be it missing there best player. I hope we get an early goal get the crowd behind them. But does anyone like the look of that defence? I can only see us being destroyed on the break. I hope I’m wrong.

09 Aug 2018 12:36:01
Ramsey is a decent player in forward areas but I don't think he is all that great and crucial for us like a inform Ozil would be. I kind of put him in the same bracket as Xhaka in terms of overall value to us as a team. He is a player that is actually better off the ball than on it. Too often he dithers on the ball too much and is definitely Not a DM his passing is very hit and miss and his shooting is terrible but he does get into good positions often with his runs. Torreira will be more valuable to us in midfield and given time I think that Guendouzi and AMN both have more to offer than Ramsey has long term.

09 Aug 2018 13:39:32
Absolutely agree with that, only thing xhaka does that puts him ahead for me is sits deep in possession and spays it left and right as his passing range is decent when Elneny is in there you really miss that range of passing, mainly because he’s total turd IMO.
