Finishing top 4 is going to be really difficult but last night's champions league games really wet my appetite for champions league football again.
I had become totally bored of just making up the numbers after 8 consecutive last 16 exits I was quite relieved to drop into the europa league where at least we didn't know what was going to happen which made it interesting even if it meant not mixing with the elite.
Suddenly last night it hit me that if we do get back into Europe's premier competition again everything will be different and none of us know what's coming whether we draw Barcelona or Bayern it makes no difference because this is a completely different Arsenal where all slates are now wiped clean and everything is once again possible for us.
I think it's going to take me a while for the penny to fully drop and get my head round just how different things really are now.

Gunner how are you, were you watching spurs again, now I hate to rain on your parade but if you get in you will only be there to make up the numbers😀.

Hi 12 mate well as long as we make 1 of the final 2 I'll be happy and why not?
Surely it's the hope and excitement that keeps all fans interested in their clubs progress, which probably explains your appearance on the Arsenal page, you in search of some hope and excitement mate :-)
If so you've definitely come to the right place mate :-)
I can see how bus spotting can quite quickly loses it appeal :-)

Talking of making up the numbers 12, hows life in mid table obscurity. Hows our good mate Maureen, the guys doing a sterling job. i'm sure in 5 years time when his contract is up, he will pass the club on to someone who is capable of getting you back into mid table. Lol. Loving it.

Haha Leahy you legend, fresh from last weeks 4-1 battering of Barcelona, no sorry, Fulham, I meant Fulham, and here you are.

I love seeing you boys get your hopes up every few weeks to have them dashed again by another loss.

I read on your page after that fabulous result that you only need a couple of tweaks and you’ll be in the top for and you know I thought, yeah they do only need a couple tweaks.

1. A complete set of 10 new outfield players.
2. A new manager.

Sort those two tweaks and you’ll be there mate. 😂

Good to see your lads on the banter page discussing who they want to get battered by in the last 16 too. 😉

Oh heard about that fat lad who dresses in red and only puts a shift in once a year, wish Lukaku a merry Christmas from us mate.

Hey Leahy did you watch the Valencia vs Stoke City game? See you were saving Martial and Herrera for the big game Sunday.

You are so lucky to have such depth in your squad mate. 😂😂.

It's laughable now at this stage, at least our second string players pogba and lukkaku got a run out.

I do believe there was a guy who played in a band I like called the travelling willburys who used to play in the Beatles Ed 😂

Enjoyed that Ed.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate, did he do the voice of Thomas Tank? I only really know that one and Lennon because me dad always looked the spit of him when I was a kid.}

10 Dec 2018 22:22:56
Ha no that was ringo star, I remember Lennon and the other guy who was more famous for his deceased wife’s veggi sausages. The travelling willburys were the fourth beatle George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom petty and Roy Orbison. I bet ed01 senior was a lady’s man then. Are you not from Liverpool? Or just a Liverpool fan or have I got that awfully wrong 😂.

{Ed033's Note - Ed001 is from Liverpool.

Made me think back to growing up with the likes of Bertie Mee, Don Revie, Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and the best EVER manager Bob Paisley.

My first memory of watching a game was my gran and grandad letting me get up again to watch a Leeds United game in black and white on their TV. I’m sure it was one of those Inter Cities Fairs cup games they played in the evenings.

Not that I’m old or anything! 😂 great read by the way. 👍🏼.

{Ed001's Note - growing up? Ah come on mate, you aren't fooling me, I have met you, you would have been late 50s when those days happened..... ;-)

11 Dec 2018 07:44:55
That first game would have been on sports night with Harry Carpenter Stoner :-)
Great Article Ed001 mate, really enjoyed that and of course you are right that for every generation the old days were the good old days where the Politicians told the truth and people pulled together more and you cold jack your job in at 10am and have a new job by dinnertime.
The travelling Wilburys! " Everybody needs somebody to lean on " With Roy the boy stealing the show, now there was a band you don't get the likes of today :-)

{Ed001's Note - I am so glad for this Arsenal site, the moment I feel old I can just come on here and I suddenly feel young again.}

And Match of the day with only two games per show Stoner? And one of them was quite often a second division game :-)
I'm not sure if it was better or worse for it, it seemed brilliant at time but memory can often be better than reality, I was flicking through the TV chanels a couple of weeks back and found the Invaders on some strange free view channel and thought brilliant, but some things are most definitely better left to memory :-)

I know mate, how times have changed! 😂

It’s like when you watch a film you loved when you were a kid, see it now and think really.

To be fair some of the not so old films now look so dated with modern tech, I’m half way through the new blade runner and it makes the original 82 version look like it was made in 62!

I thought you knew I wasn’t nice Ed01 mate. 🤪😂.

11 Dec 2018 10:16:50
It's weird mate i know, times change quickly, I was watching fools and horses a little while back and some of the dialogue just wouldn't be allowed now on mainstream TV today and Friends too would have to be censored, and some of those episodes were only in the 2000s!
Mind you to me a snickers bar will always be a marathon and don't even get me started on Starbursts, opral fruits if you please! :-)

My sister was the channel changer, I was the antenna, I got to stand on the chair and hold the antenna so we could get reception. Unfortunately the only good spot was above the TV, so I didn't get to watch anything.

In the 70s like most people we had a black and white telly with a round click dial for changing chanels much like today's washing machines have, there were only 3 chaneld bbc1 bbc2 and itv, our dial broke leaving us stuck on BBC 2 per permanently,
Wow we really looked forward to Monday nights at 9pm and watching Alias Smith and Jones, it made such a change from the open university :-)

12 Dec 2018 23:17:07
Gunner, i can remember the time we used to sit and watch the radio before we had a telly. Jimmy clithero and steptoe and son, on a sunday afternoon. Them were the days.

In reply to the post down the page about whether it matters that we can match Utd etc for the top names or just find gems, I got drunk and forgot I had posted! 😂 Really if we want to be competing for the title we have to be able to buy some top players that you know will just come in and be ready straight away. With the gems, there's more element of risk that they are not ready or they don't make the difference otherwise their price would be higher. For every guendousi or Torreira there's an asano, perez, elneny, gabriel who aren't going to make the grade and you're stuck with for a while. Equally we've been heavily linked to players who would of been phenomenal bargains yet never took the risk for whatever reason van dijk at celtic, manolas at olympiacos, alderwierld before going to Southampton spring to mind, but hopefully that was just the old scouting team and it will all change now.

10 Dec 2018 10:12:15
To be fair we have paid upwards of £50 million for a player so we will spend a fair bit.

I think United is probably a poor example to give as they get mugged off for every pony going and that clown Woodward seems happy to keep paying it in fees or wages.

I’d like to think our lot are way smarter than that and City and Liverpool generally pay more realistic fees as do Chelsea now and get far better players for their money, well if you forget about Morata and Bakayoko! 😂.

 0 0

10 Dec 2018 10:18:38
Equally though Eden mate for every mega money signing that lives up to their price tag there are 2 that don't.
There is no guarantee because if there were Pogba would be in the running for the PFA player of the year instead of sat on the United bench and Mesut too come to that.
It's easier to identify proven talent which is why they come at such a premium price but surely that's why Sven is here. We don't have United or City financial resources so we have to find another way and when you look at the likes of Kante Torreira Mahrez to name but 3 players no one had herd of before they were linked to premier league clubs but are now A listers in the premier league.
Us fans like our club to sign players we know about and can instantly excited about seeing in an Arsenal shirt, it's only natural but in reality is all about what they deliver in the shirt that matters long after the price tag has been disregarded.

I know things haven't gone well recently for them but Southampton seeded to have a good system in place a few years back, I think it was Les Reid who explained they were constantly on the look out for a replacement manager, full back, striker and every other part of the team just in case they lost the ones they had so they were ready to go if needed, proactive rather than reactive if you like, and for a while it worked well for them.
I think smarter planning smarter scouting and smarter coaching and management will see us bridge the financial gap in the coming years and who knows people might be using the Arsenal way as a model for success again really soon :-)
Well if we can't dare to dream now when can we :-)

Utd and Citeh have spent similar amounts in the last few years. The difference in football quality is universes apart. The coach plays a big part in the way a team/ player performs. Pep is getting the best out of his team, maureen is actually holding them back. Money certainly helps, no question but the coach and back up is just as important.

Guys not been on much I'm the last 8 months or so. But so glad for the change and once again enjoying watching us. Can't really fault anything.

Few more windows and I am sure emery will have his team sorted.

Have a good Christmas and New year also to Wenger I'm sure he is enjoying the chilled TV work and his life once again.

Have a good one people xx.

Just a quick question for you all, I don't know how many (if any of you) read the review of the day news round up I do each day, but on a Monday I used to do an 'And Finally. ' section on the end with footballing anecdotes based around a theme. After chatting with a group of people on the Liverpool site, they have requested I turn that into a separate longer article that I do regularly.

Anyway, for those that are interested in reading it, what kind of anecdotes would you be interested in:

Would you like it to just stick to football only?

Would you be interested in any sports-based anecdotes?

Or would you want it to also include slightly unrelated anecdotes as well? As in just something funny (well I hope it would be funny anyway! ) that came to mind.

 0 0

09 Dec 2018 23:00:20
Anything funny is good for me.

 1 0

09 Dec 2018 23:36:32
Do a weekly Spurs article, that way you don't even have to try to be funny - it'll just be funny.

On a slightly less serious note, I think "anything sports related" would be the ticket.

 0 0

09 Dec 2018 19:20:09
Any and all of them for me mate.

{Ed001's Note - ok thanks mate. Glad you said that, I had feared running out of anecdotes after a couple of weeks. Football is very limited.}

Really pleased with effort and result . Three things stop diving, game crying out for a firing Ozil and Torreira legend COYG.

 0 1

09 Dec 2018 17:02:58
We can’t play with 3 non creative midfielders like we did Saturday. 2 shots on target for the entire game against Huddersfield at HOME. We need one of Ramsey or Ozil in the hole behind Laca and PEA or it’s back the the George Graham era where we try to beat everyone one 1 nil except the defence is no where near as solid. We cannot sell both of our players, they are often the difference in games.
Can’t stand the diving either - now Mustafi misses a game due to his dive 🤬.
Like the front two PEA and Laca
Ozil in the hole.
4 in midfield - they pick themselves Kola, Granit, Torriera, Bellerin
- long term we need to upgrade on Granit and Bellerin ( terrible crossing )
Back 3 - need a long term plan.
We do need a left winger to replace Welbeck and a CB and a CDM wh can play a good pass.

09 Dec 2018 17:38:41
Not sure it was the set up that is a problem, Gouendouzi created 5 chances, torriera three and scored, xhaka two. I think it was a bad day up front, which is now unusual.

Oh Steve your such a little cupcake these days 😘😘.

09 Dec 2018 18:10:48
Just think if they can create those chances think what a motivated Ozil can do . Still hope Unai can get him back to best but yesterday was made for him - thought we looked toothless without him COYG.

I am sano aren't i, beats the victor meldrew days, i think.

09 Dec 2018 18:53:07
Sussex, we would all like a motivated Ozil but that is something santa can't bring us. Ozil is and always will be Ozil, sometimes great but too often invisible, like he is now and has been for a lot of his arsenal career. He is robbing arsenal at the moment and really since he got his inflated pay rise. We are not getting our bang for our buck at all.

 0 0

09 Dec 2018 18:53:55
Agree the diving has to stop, hopefully very few of us want to see us going down that road.

 0 0

09 Dec 2018 18:59:30
Totally agree Steve just not given up on him yet - bloody hell its Ozil In or Ozil out - we’ve been here before I’m sure 😂COYG.

 0 0

09 Dec 2018 19:46:27
Torriera was simulating also! Cut that BS out boys and let the refs do their job. Just like they did when Laca stayed on his feet 🤷‍♀️.

 0 0

09 Dec 2018 19:54:05
Sussex, we have missed him (the better Ozil) but in another way we havent. Games without him, have been won, spuds for one, we played really exciting football and i don't think he would have improved us at OT. You have to build a team around him and i think i prefer a team that just does the job, without relying on him because he isn't that reliable often enough.

 0 0

09 Dec 2018 20:54:49
I just can’t see Ozil any worse than Miki or Iwobi! Anyway I’ve been good this year ish so why can’t Santa give us a fully firing Ozil 🎄🎄🎄COYG.

Mesut will either win his place back in Dicks team or leave the club completely.
Obviously it's better for everyone if he wins his place and Dicks approval back but if that doesn't happen it's best for everyone he moves on.
Come on Mesut whatever the problem is getting sorted and get back to your absolute best again.

Hope is an amazing thing Sanogo mate, without it there is nothing But once it's restored it takes on a life of its own and everything once again becomes possible.
Where there is a will, there is always a way and Arsenal football club once again has the will desire and passion to be the very best it can be again, what's not to enjoy:-)

We have Steve mate and everything is exciting again :-) .
I think it's only now that many people are realising just how stale we had become and more and more fans who didn't want change at the time are accepting now it was the right thing to do for the entire club, players and fans alike.

09 Dec 2018 07:28:43
It's a thoroughly enjoyable season under Emery. I can't recall a season where the top 5 teams rarely drop points against teams below the top 6. This week only Man City dropped any points, with all the other 4, plus Man U winning. It will be interesting to see the effect playing CL football will have on Liverpool and Toot, as they have extremely difficult matches to contend with.
We can rest players on Thursday, before playing Southampton away on Sunday, followed by the League Cup quarter final against the Toot midweek.
With season ending injuries to Welbeck and Holding, we need to reinforce the squad in January. Particularly as we may, if able to, cash in on Ramsey and possibly move Ozil on. In the new year I believe the defence can cope without Holding, as we have Mustafi, Sokratis, Koscielny and hopefully fit again Mavropanos. I like our DM options, but we clearly need to sign a wide attacking player to fill the gap left by Welbeck, possibly a player that can fill in the main strikers role too. I would also like a midfield player that can attack and defend. We have too many that are decent going forward, but offer little defensively.

09 Dec 2018 11:01:40
It's never been tougher at the top than it is right now, both Liverpool and City with their records so far this season would normally expect to be romping away with the title and ourselves Chelsea and spares all having lost just twice all season would normally expect to be sitting top 4 pretty rather than swapping places like musical chairs on a weekly basis.
So far it's been a brilliant season in the premier league and the fact that we are right in the mix of a top 4 battle this season of all seasons tells it's own story of how far we've come in such a short period of time under our new manager.

Ok Ed mate, you’ve stumped me, what’s the foot injury got to do with the review? 🤔.

{Ed001's Note - it was a mistake by me, I forgot to add in the story. It was an ex-Arsenal man, Perez at West Ham, who was taken off much to the disgust of Hammers fans and he was showing why he had to come off.}
