Thought for next season....deploy Squillaci as a striker, but with his back faced to their goal....and lob in aerial balls while instructing him to head them back out instead of backwards towards their goal....

That's a 35/goal season folks....defenses would be helpless

US Gooner

Believable57 Unbelievable8

H love that

Agree0 Disagree0

US Gooner for manager. Nuff said.

Ben

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha i like it

Agree0 Disagree0

Has he scored many own goals? I only remember Wigan draw and possibly a fulham match...
I know it's only a joke, just wondering...

Agree0 Disagree0

Koscielny has scored more own goals hasnt he?

Agree0 Disagree0

And to quote Mr. Wenger "it will be like a new signing" :D

Ash

Agree0 Disagree0

I scored with almunia in fifa 12 at level 3. so anything is possible...lol

Agree0 Disagree0

Ouch !!

Agree0 Disagree0

This might be the dumbest post ever and embarrassed the believable button got 42 hits? IS this a joke...haha

Anyone else think we need a LB in the summer, more than a CB? Gibbs look great but is always injured and Santos can't defend to save his life...

G95

Believable24 Unbelievable23

Definitely, Gibbs is very good but is to injury prone and santos is good at going forward but his defensive positional play is terrible.. I would love to see Baines join or someone with decent experience to push Gibbs when he is fit.

Peter the gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

Vertonghen adds defensive cover for both..

Makes sense.

Gilo

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree Gilo, but I have never been sure over Santos and last night truly confirmed he can't defend. Gibbs gets injured a lot so Santos would play a lot, which is something I really don't want.

G95

Agree0 Disagree0

Santoos needs to realise hes a left back not left wing

Agree0 Disagree0

That's the thing though, he should be left wing as he is a good attacking player, but a p1ss poor defender.

G95

Agree0 Disagree0

To be honest if we signed another LB and played santos as a LW I wouldnt not have a problem with it. His a good player, just shocking at defending

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Santos was very low down the order on Wenger's shortlist for LB's; but with hours left in the Window he was the best available.

I think Wenger wrongly assumed that Traore could cover the position, which clearly wasn't the case.

For all his genius, Wenger is stubborn so I suspect we will see gibbs/santos next season as well.

Billybob

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we still need cover in both fullback positions. Someone like Zabaleta who can play equally well as a leftback and rightback my personal pick would be Sime Vrsaljko who can also play in midfield and on both wings if required. I've always felt that we have needed a player that can offer that sort of versatility in our squad.

Sydney Gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

Gibbs is good when he's not injured.... get in leighton baines! class defender and deadly from set pieces! would be perfect... and english! again...

R.O.B

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with sydney gooner. Zabaleta is one of the most underrated players in the epl, any player of his calibre would improve the squad. Potentailly coquellan could provide this cover, although its far to early to be definitive.
Santos is a solid squad player, superb composure. Also arsenal downfall has been the 18 different defensive combinatins in the league this season. although he is 2nd choice to gibbs, if he has a run in the team with a settled back 4 i think he would suprise most of us

Agree0 Disagree0

He had a run in the team earlier and was brutal. He can't defend. Simple!

G95

Agree0 Disagree0

I disagree i think yeah he has a lack of defensive positional play , but in one on one situation he can make some great tackles. I think Gibbs is the number one , but am i the only one who thinks he's come back considerably weaker in his attacking side. Santos is more than adequate cover and could help Gibbs get back to his best go up the line! COYG

Agree0 Disagree0

Santos was crap for a while. Then, starting in second half of the Chelsea match, he was suddenly unstoppable in defence. Made tackle after tackle, didn't get beaten once, and up until his injury against Olympiakos, he was one of our more solid players. In my opinion he's just rusty, because his tackle success rate was through the roof for a good 8 game spell (I think)

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah, baines or bastos!!!!!!!!!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Just sign jan veronghen and play him there

Agree0 Disagree0

Vertonghen can be LB and V5 can play as well.

liverpool fans on the liverpool banter page are saying dein will be their new Director of football or CEO any truth ed? {Ed001's Note - there have been a number of clubs who have approached him since he left Arsenal, Liverpool have certainly been amongst them. So it is certainly possible.}

Believable5 Unbelievable12

David dein is a true arsenal man he would not go to liverpool

Dear ED
In the summer AW will try to maximise his cash reserves to hopefully bring new players to the Emirates. What are the potential transfer values and realistic prospects of moving out the following:-

Bendtner
Arshavin
Denilson
Vela
Lansbury
Bartley
Botelho
Almunia
Fabianski
Squillaci

My own view is there may be £25 million to be got from clearing out the above in some form of fire-sale, but to get rid of all ten will be very difficult.

Believable22 Unbelievable4

Lansbury and Bartley will not be leaving. Should have a future at arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

Clearly you haven't seen Bartley at Ibrox, mate. He makes Squillaci look like Beckenbaer

Agree0 Disagree0

For the size of Bartley, he gets bullied in the air, wins no headers and can't tackle....

Should fit well in our defence.

G95

Agree0 Disagree0

Almunia and fabianski are out of contract so they will walk for free...and if im not mistaken so is squillachi. denilson has a year more on his contract and he will go out on another loan and then walk for free.

the only thing we save is not paying them wages. whic is good enough

Agree0 Disagree0

Lansbury needs to stay IMO because he deserves a shot--Norwich wanted him this season but it was his personal choice to go to West Ham (and Wenger has plans to keep him, allegedly). The rest, yeah, off they go.

this arsenal page is a joke all u losers do is come on this site and name the same 4 or 5 players that you think arsenal will sign, vertongen, suarez, podolski, mvilla, honda......... only one of these players would even be considerd a starter at the manchester clubs,

cali

Believable9 Unbelievable40

Arsenal page is a joke? Would you rather we listed the likes of messi, ronaldo, xavi, iniesta,

Adam

Agree0 Disagree0

Quite easy then, dont come and look at it then lol! And sorry Vertonghen would walk straight into the Utd team!

Agree0 Disagree0

And? Great that's so good for the manchester clubs isn't?

Wonder why people hate the arrogance of the manchester clubs ? You've demostrated it quite perfectly.

You have added nothing intelligent, just a mindless comment which means absolute nothing to an AFC fan.

I hope you continue to enjoy glory hunting-

one day arsenal will be winning league titles again...hmm I wonder if you 'suddenly' become an arsenal 'fan' then as well ?

Go away loser, this page is for real fans.
LG

Agree0 Disagree0

Vertonghen, Podolski, Honda and M'Vila would all be in with a shout at starting for the Manchester clubs.

Now please don't comment if you have nothing positive to say, "loser".

G95

Agree0 Disagree0

You do understand that podolski and M'villa would both start at united, verthongen wouldn't be there as they have jones and smalling coming through?

You also understand that M'villa and verthongen would start at city ahead of the ageing Barry/ soon to leave de Jong, and In verts case ahead of lescott.

Finally you do realise it makes you seem desperate for attention that you come on here to slag people off for posting when you've just done it, and judging from your spelling and post your probably a 13 year old city fan from the midlands who ant name any of their players from the pre-sheik times without looking on the web, or a utd fan from London.

Please mate, If your going to slag people off the at least do it properly.

Or you know, go outside? Get a life? Learn to read/spell?

All the best

D

Agree0 Disagree0

Man city maybe but manchester united! their midfield is demolished ATM they would go a long way to get the likes of M'vila and Honda in there. Also is that why M'vila is linked with city?
dan

Agree0 Disagree0

Nice to know mate!
I really appreciate it.
No really I do

Agree0 Disagree0

Should your mouth you Manc. The mere fact your coming on here to mouth off states ur a sham of a fan concerning yourself with other peoples business.

The mere fact you said either Manchester team says ur a city fan. A fan of a club that spent over half a billion on players and still cant win s**t all!! U got beaten by a team assembled by a master for amount of compensation you pay your managers!

Man City are a bunch of over paid, t**ts, any player who goes to your team goes for money and thats all so donlt think there goin for the team, the medals, or anything else. Now get off this sight and go lick Tevez's ****

Agree0 Disagree0

Well if man Utd have quality players like Rafael and Fabio, Johnny evans, Michael Owen, Anderson and players like Scholes and Giggs who are going to retire any season now (one did partly) then i think players like Podolski (4th top goalscorer in the bundesliga with a side fighting relegation) Yann 'm Villa (also attracting attention from Real Madrid who are better than Man utd in every department) who is the perfect replacement for scholes and vertonghen who is twice the player of Johnn Evans then Man utd fans can pipe down and as for city, 1. we beat them on Sunday with our current team, 2. they will come second in the prem this season to the team that need those payers for the reasons above.

Clever Gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

What ........ as opposed to being like the liverpool fans and claiming we are signing every player thats scored a goal in the last 3 weeks or is MASSIVELY overpriced ! or the spud fans who just trawl through everyone elses transfer targets because they don't have a clue ? .
Jog on cali !

dude

Agree0 Disagree0

Both manchester clubs would obviously take mvilla, podolski and vertonghen!

Agree0 Disagree0

Would this be why BOTH Manchester clubs approached Podolski?

Would this be why BOTH Manchester clubs, approached Vertonghen?

Would this be why Man U want(ed) Honda?

Have a word with yourself "cali"

=Miss Arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

After a season or two at Arsenal both Manchester clubs will be all over them.ie. Nasri,Toure,Adebayor,Clichy.

Agree0 Disagree0

You mean the one we just beat, or the one that lost to Wigan?

US Gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

So why are you on here looking ??
seems to me that united need to stengthen and as for that other pile city , yeah that lot are full of class mmmmmmmmmmmm
IF we get those players lets just see how big your mouth is then

Agree0 Disagree0

Prick stay on ur own page

Agree0 Disagree0

I bet youre looking to poach more players you manc piece of s**t

How you are talking city must have absolutely destroyed us last time we played them. sorry mate but what was the score against the "mighty" manchester side on Sunday. oh wait...

Agree0 Disagree0

Dont rise to this nonsence gooners!

He forgets that only 1 or 2 of the Man Utd team would get into the arsenal team, we play much better football than man utd and man city, city also have unlimited financial resource only reason they are where they are, cannot wait untill financial fair play, and the day Man Utds 500 million debt sinks them, The way we run our club will only benefit us big time in the next few years and we will be back at the top either next season or the following. I actually have a respect for Alex Ferguson as he is unquestionably one of the greatest managers of all time, if he had not been there the last few years Man Utd would have been fighting for 6th in the table.

As for city......as soon as yous get anywhere near the prestige of Arsenal or Manchester United and actually win the premiership then you can comment on this page, otherwise drop back down from the sky and back to reality and focus on playin players with no respect who get 6 months 'sabbitical' and refuse to play lol embarrasing.

Agree0 Disagree0

WoW man city squad is decent and includes lots of ex arsenal incl coaches staff players but man utd! Even without any signings Arsenal have a better squad. Answer me this would Fletcher get into the Arsenal team would Phil Jones. What about Johny Evans or Cleverly,Anderson. Is De Gea better than Schezny. All of these = No in case you don't know. I would also like to add that Arsenal have spent a lot less than both of these teams so just give up MANC

Don't get carried away with the signings. Dempsey and giroud ain't coming. But will we make another top striker signing along with Podolski, Vontenghen, will come along with french midfielder Marvin Martin,Also there is talk of another keeper. I aso hope we sign Benayoun, he is a good solid squad player and never lets you down when he plays. I believe with these additions we will be serious contenders. And i Believe we will go very close.

Believable15 Unbelievable10

If AW goes for Dempsey for 10m Fulham will accept because he has 1 year left on his contract and he would be great backup for RVP and has versitality

DC

Marvin Martin is German

Marvin Martin in certainly not German, He's French. Lol, I think your thinking about the German winger Marko Marin.

Two signings that make great economical/positional sense IMO.

Vertonghen (12m) - CB,LB,CDM,CM
Honda (8m) - LW,CM,CAM,RW,ST

Add to that

Podolski (11m) - LW,CAM,RW,ST
Adler/Wiese (Free)

I honestly think we could win the league with these signings.

StEvE

Believable24 Unbelievable11

Definatly agree but Adler instead of Wiese and another striker, eg. Giroud/Suarez/Ba plus the 31m could be generated by sales of Arshavin, Chamakh ect.
DC

I'd really love these players to come. been a big fan of honda for ages! not sure about the figures though. after those additions the team would be very much capable to win trophies!

If blackburn get relegated would it be worth going in for grant hanley?
I think if we get him and loan him out to an epl team for half a season along with miquel then we have a great defence for the future.

Believable10 Unbelievable13

Grant hanley not good enough and i believe he will stay at blackburn

Agree0 Disagree0

Shockingly bad player, Hanley. Fouled his way through every match I've had the displeasure to watch.

If any Blackburn players have futures with other clubs, they're MGP and Hoilett. Not even sure if Samba plays for BB anymore.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well seen you've not watched many Blackburn games as you've said........MGP, yer having a laugh - he's good for long throw in's though!!!!!!
As for young Hanley, typical old fashioned defender - no nonsense - being hard is what is needed more in the modern game to prevent too many fancy goal scoring opportunities. Most improved player by far at Blackburn this season - remember he is only 20 years old, won't reach his prime for another 5 / 6 years!!!!!!

Reports suggest that Arsenal have seemingly more or less completed the signing of two top notch additions to their Emirates Stadium squad.
Arsene Wenger is said to have closed the deal to bring Koln attacker Lukas Podolski for a fee in the region of £10.9m and the Polish born German international will add a much needed goal-scoring alternative to Robin Van Persie that can help to share the striking load with the Dutch international.
The 26 year old has been in fine form this term, netting 16 goals despite the fact that his side is fighting to avoid the drop, and the addition of a player with almost 100 national team caps will add some experience to a squad that could do with a better balance of youthful players and established stars.
This source also suggests that Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen is also likely to move to the North London club after boss Frank De Boer practically admitted that he is likely to lose the Belgian international, who used to partner Gunners man Thomas Vermaelen at the Amsterdam club and is a national team compatriot of the hard working Arsenal defender.
The £10m rated 24 year old is able to effectively fill the centre back and defensive midfield roles and is the type of adaptable talent that Arsene Wenger likes to populate his squad with.
Having seen his Arsenal side recover from a woeful start to the season and push on with a terrific run of Premier League form, Arsene Wenger may feel that his current squad is not far off being able to challenge for major honours and the signing of this pair would greatly assist such an aim.

Believable25 Unbelievable3

Would be very excited if we get these two, they add experiance and depth

Agree0 Disagree0

Copied from caught offside lol, could well be true, but given the nature of caught offside best to wait and see lol

N.Wales Gunner

Agree0 Disagree0

These 2 have been doing the rounds for ages nothing new. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the summer transfer window is the same as any other, full of dissapointment and disgruntled fans like me for 1.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think wenger will get the players necessary to win something. and he is not going to waste the talent of rvp. we need wilshere back and upto 3 quality signings...if they are mvila, vertongen and poldi...ill take it.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Apr 2012 13:38:00
A few questions for you guys:
If we play 4231 would we play podolski on the left wing or would he just be back up for rvp?
We have ryo, gervinho, walcott, chamberlain and possibly afobe(who prefers the CAM/SS role but can still play on the wing or up front)

Believable6 Unbelievable2

I agree, we have alot of wingers and especially very young ones with potential (Also have Pedro Botelho, Wellington and Joel Campbell out on loan) but I presume podolski would play LW and play through the middle when RVP is injured/rested.

And also mate I believe Afobe is a out-an-out striker, you might be thinking of Aneke who is another great talent as the AM/SS

Colney Bandit

Agree0 Disagree0

He would be good on the right sop he can cut in and shoot with that left cannon of his

RG

Agree0 Disagree0

Walcott Van Persie Podolski

Subs:
Gervinho
Ox

Then loan out Ryo and Afobe to premier league teams and if they do well enough then they will start next season. Would like a back up striker instead of Podolski because Gervinho isnt good enough to start

DC

Agree0 Disagree0

Botelho is a left back and we should play

Walcott Van Persie Podolski

Subs:
Gervinho
Ox

Send Ryo and Afobe out on loan to pl teams and have one more back up striker instead of Podolski because Gervinho isnt good enough winger im thinking of Suarez/Giroud o r a cheeky bid for Ba

DC

Agree0 Disagree0

@Colney
Aneke can even play CM/CDM
Afobe is an out and out striker but he is quite a good holder of the ball.
1732

Agree0 Disagree0

Walcott simply isn't good enough to start for Arsenal. His last game for us, he was rampant for 10 minutes which was great to see him like that, but after that, he miss placed every pass and every cross for the remaining 80 minutes. He doesn't have the mental ability to cope with games when things don't go his way.
We should definitely be on the verge of starting AOC in his place, simply because he is almost as quick, has a better shot, can dribble better and is stronger. AOC is the exctiement that Arsenal fans having been crying out to see, yet we have to watch Walcott misplace a load of shots before he makes a sub appearence.
Next year I believe our best XI will be
Szczesny
Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen Gibbs
Song Arteta Wilshere
AOC RVP Podolski
We certainly need our wingers with better crossing ability.
BUT HOWEVER...I will defend Walcott on one point. Everytime he hits the bi-line and goes to put in a cross, the only person who is ever in the box is RVP, time and time again. Arsenal never throw players at the ball whilst it's in the air. Our LW and CAM ATLEAST should be in the box with him.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Apr 2012 13:12:45
What do you all think we should do with Benayoun? At first I wanted us to get in a more quality A.M but I think with Arshavin going I wouldn't mind him as a squad player especially with Podolski (hopefully) coming in.

He's a fantastic player, has got bags of experience, knows how to defend and with his technical ability, offers a different option out wide to the generally preferred pacey players.
In some massive games this season that different balance he's given the side has been key to our success - I really don't think we'd have dominated the likes of City and Spurs the way we did had he not been playing.
Plus he seems to have settled in with the players really really well.

However if his wages are a problem I can imagine Wenger getting in another, cheaper A.M or just promoting from within.
Tricky one I think..
Eman

Believable15 Unbelievable5

Personally I think we should keep Benayoun for next season and next season only. The likes of Wilshere, Ryo and the Ox will benefit greatly by having his presence within the group for another year. Undecided about Arshavin though.

Sydney Gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we should sign Benayoun permanently. If you notice when Man United play big games they often use Ji Sung Park on the left(always play him against us). This is because he has such a high work-rate, where he will constantly track back all game giving numbers in defence, and still offer a decent amount of attack up top when on the counter. I think Benayoun is the same type of player. In big games where we need to make sure we are tight at the back and not vulnerable to a counter-attack, Benayoun gives us that high work rate up and down the pitch, allowing the likes of Walcott, RVP and Rosicky to play a little more freely.
He would not be a starter every week, but he is the type of player who accepts he plays in a squad and will never cause any trouble.

Coity Gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

Would definatly be a good addition and Chelsea would let him go for about 3m i think

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Yossi is footballlers footballer, he doesnt moan about not playing, but give him the chance and he will work his socks off for you, bags of experience and not afraid to get stuck in, i think we should definately sign up

N. Wales Gunner

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd just loan him again for a season if possible. Most cost effective option.

StEvE

Agree0 Disagree0

No i would sell him and keep lansbury in his place. Younger and will be more beneficial for us in the long term. Otherwise yossi signing would pretty much be the end of lansbury

Good solid win last night, very pleased with Walcotts performance, hrs really starting to come of age. I think he'll be even better next season as he competes with Podolski, Gervinhio and Chamberlin for starting place. Ramsey played ok and the abuse her getting is a bit unfair. His injury did take a year out of his growth but the main reason he hasnt been performing is pressure put on him by himself and the fans. He isn't our worse player like some idiots make him out to be, he's much better than Denilson. I think in 2 seasons time he can be the new Gareth Barry. I see more in him as CDM/CM but remember he us still only 21.

Paddy

Believable15 Unbelievable3

LOL that says it all, the new Gareth Barry.

Agree0 Disagree0

`The new Gareth Barry`, wow, high praise indeed! :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Walcott had a good 11 minutes and after that second goal he switched off. he wasn't the only one though.

iceman

Agree0 Disagree0

He is already better than Gareth Barry

DC

Agree0 Disagree0

Eh barry is not very good to put it mildly....
big dickey

Agree0 Disagree0

Hes infinitely better than gareth barry.. remember fab 1st season in CAM, couldn't hit a barn door.. 2nd season scored 18goals. give ramsey time.. quality will come (p.s. even though their styles are different i think ramsey wil be just as effective)

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Ramsey has the finesse abd reads the ball well. He Judy needs to work on his finishing and pass completion. He gets us caught on counters too easy trying a tricky pass. Leave that to song for now!

As for the boys efforts against wolves. It was really a training session for them. Plus wenger told them to slow it down once they were two up! Hence the reason people saw it as they switched off.

Can't wait for us to destroy wigan and the sours to drop more points!

Ed I just wanted to know if there is any serious interest in Dinamo Zagreb's two wonder kids Sime Vrsaljko and Mateo Kovacic from anyone and I also wanted to know your opinion on them especially the 17 year old Kovacic who from what I've seen (which admittedly is very little) looks like a world class attacking midfielder in the making. Thanx

Sydney Gooner {Ed002's Note - Vrsaljko interests Manchester City and Roma. Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid and no doubt others have an interest in Dinamo Zagreb's Kovacic. Seen to be one for the future but I suspect that if he does move any time soon he could spend time in Germany gaining experience before a move to one of the more major players in European football. In the summer, Barcelona offered up a small financial payment for Kovacic on what I understand to be an 8 year deal with the first two years contracted to Zagreb followed by a six year deal with Barcelona. This would "overcome" a number of issues with the regulations. However, two clubs have been involved in very recent discussions with Dinamo whether or not anything comes of it we will have to wait and see.}

Believable4 Unbelievable1

From what I've seen from your comments Ed002 on the player-profiles website you seem to like your attacking midfielders so I'm assuming you can answer this better than most. How good do you think Kovacic can potentially be? If Barcelona are willing to offer an 17 year old a 8 year deal as you said with all the midfield gems they have coming through La Masia he must really be something special.

Sydney Gooner {Ed002's Note - The player profiles are nothing to do with me. There is an Editor dedicated to those. However, much is expected of Kovacic.}

Hi Ed,
Can we take Nuri Sahin from real madrid (he has not got much playing time), does wenger like him? , i think he will be good in the playmaker role along with rosicky. and what will be his price.
thanks. {Ed002's Note - Sahin has had injury problems this year but rumours do persist about his long term future. If he were to leave I would very much suspect a move to Italy (possibly with Juventus) or a return to Germany would come before any thoughts of a move to England. Malaga also spoke to Madrid about the possibility of a loan.}

With Wolves, Wigan and Blackburn likely to go down at the end of the season could the Ed's share any insight as to whether we would have any transfer deals in relation to;

kevin doyle
hugo rodellga
junior hoilett {Ed002's Note - Only in Hoilett. Bolton, Spurs, Newcastle, Stoke, Arsenal and possibly Aston Villa and QPR have been interested - plus a couple of clubs from Germany, including Bayern Munich. I understand that Roma may press to have Hoilett sign a pre-contract agreement with them - which may spark further interest from Germany. The English sides are at a disadvantage in the chase for Hoilett now as he is in to the last six months of his contract and he can talk to interested parties from outside of England. Blackburn will offer him a new deal but I doubt he will be interested, in the same way as a move to Bolton, Aston Villa or Stoke is unlikely. If pushed, I would say North London (probably Spurs) or foreign shores are the most likely destinations - and I do expect him to leave this summer.}
