Will Arsenal genuinely make at least 1 marquee signing
£25 mil plus?
Or will it be someone with potential who'll end up in Spain in 3 years! Using the same excuses want to win cups or when they win cups at Arsenal they then say they have achieved everything at the club (Overmars)

Believable7 Unbelievable15

For me 25mln on Belhanda and Podolski is VERY marquee!

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we need another good striker, alongside RVP,there are some good players out there for well under 25mill,and they will be a lot easier to sign if we are playing CL football next season. As for Overmars,he had a list of top teams after him,it was the charm and determination of David Dein that finally brought him to the Arsenal.(and many more besides)Can't see AW spending 25mill on one player though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Obviously other good strikers would be nice, but Podolski is very much a striker.

If wenger can find a cheap option, I am sure he will otherwise, it would be nice to see Joel Campbell getting some games.

Billybob

Agree0 Disagree0

I think AW will not make any +20mil signings, that's something he'll never do, he will get some quality players in though

Agree0 Disagree0

The only 25mil signing IF wenger makes will be for Higuain or Gotze. thats all but neither will come.

Agree0 Disagree0

What is it with the "modern" Football fan?

Expense does not indicate a "Marquee" signing, quality and popularity do... We're getting a MARQUEE Signing in Lukas Podolski for HALF of what you (OP) consider to be 'Marquee'.

Dennis Bergkamp was a Marquee signing and we paid 7.5m for him which even back then, was a snip. We paid 500k less than that, for Marc Overmars who was also a Marquee signing.

If you're looking at Monies. Apparently Man Utd, Loserpool and Chavski all made Marquee signings in the past season... ROTFL! Have a think about that one for a minute.

=Miss Arsenal.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't want arsenal to start making 25 mil signings! I would much rather buy promising players or ones that are established talents at affordable prices so that in the next fifteen years we reach champions league, get to finals and compete! Oh and miss arsenal is right we even signed Arshavin as a marquee signing and it went wrong! (although you can't put man utd in that as they will win the title)

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with MA. Let's focus on quality on player as oppose to price. Wenger has found plenty of great players in the 10-15mln price range.

Nasri
Vermaelen
Ox
Kos
Sagna cost 8mln I think...

Also - look at newcastle. value is important!

Billybob

A marquee signing for me, would be to a sign a player that was of exceptional quality to get the fans of the club totally buzzing!

Podolski isnt an exceptional player...he's good..but he isnt a marquee signing.

To sign cavani would be a marquee signing. To sign Juan mata WOULD have been a marquee signing. Eden Hazard would be a marquee signing. Eriksen from ajax would be a marquee signing.

Notice how these players are all wanted by dozens of clubs? I dunno how a marquee signing could be a player that has 2 clubs bidding for him at the low end of the transfer budget. If podolski was 'marquee' - why has no big club other than Arsenal, tried to buy him?

Agree0 Disagree0

We paid a lot more for Overmars, 500,000 was Anelka.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes but the time frame you are talking about Liverpool have won the Champs league as have united plus leagues and chelsea have won leagues and fa cups with there marquee signings

Agree0 Disagree0

So you mean signings like
Torres
Berbatov
Kaka
Carroll
Sebastian Veron (at least Twice)
Shebchenko
Alexis Sanchez

Price is not the only indication of a players ability - that is particularly true in England.

Billybob

Agree0 Disagree0

Even Man Utd, who have won cups, have overpaid on players.
Anderson
Bebe
...
The only differnce is that MU can get away with, because they win prizes.

According to me a bad buy by AW could result in him ruining the club.

I trust AW, he knows that the players he's buying are quality for money. Podolski could be a master move, adding the necessary experience to push the team to glory.
BTW Theo, RVP, Vermaelen, Kosc, Sagna didn't get me real excited either. Well each and everyone of these players are great, in Wenger I trust!

I think Poldi and Vertonghen will come in, along with maybe one other big name and some typical Wenger buys, that nobody sees coming, but that could prove to be the next best players.

"A marquee signing for me, would be to a sign a player that was of exceptional quality to get the fans of the club totally buzzing!"

Podolski checks this box.

"Podolski isnt an exceptional player...he's good..but he isnt a marquee signing."

Yes, he is.

"To sign cavani would be a marquee signing. To sign Juan mata WOULD have been a marquee signing. Eden Hazard would be a marquee signing. Eriksen from ajax would be a marquee signing."

Podolski is miles better, than Hazard. Trust me. He is more miles better than Eriksen and Mata, as well.

"Notice how these players are all wanted by dozens of clubs? I dunno how a marquee signing could be a player that has 2 clubs bidding for him at the low end of the transfer budget. If podolski was 'marquee' - why has no big club other than Arsenal, tried to buy him?"

Which 2 clubs are you referring to? I'm assuming one is us. Pretty sure an Ed could help me out with this although I know it to be true... But Man Utd wanted him, he turned them down.

PSG, Lazio & Inter also have shown interest, as have a few other Bundesliga clubs (BVB for one) and I know they don't really count as they always copy us and aren't a 'big' club but the Spuds also enquired...

Podolski is the epitome of a 'Marquee' or 'High Profile' signing without the need for a huge monetary spin.

=Miss Arsenal. {Ed001's Note - Podolski has been targeted by half of Europe at one time or another.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said M Arsenal...

Agree0 Disagree0

Podolski is better than eden hazard?
Podolski has been 'targeted' by half of europe?

Its amazing what words people can use to create a false illusion of reality.
Being put on the bottom of a shortlist of 10 strikers = 'targeted'

The other club that wanted podolski was the russian club that he refused to goto because he wanted to play in a proper league.

Podolski failed at Bayern munich, where he didnt have to change league and he got to play with lots of his international team m8s. Your in dreamland if you think he is a marquee signing.

On your logic, Arteta was also a marquee signing. However, the reality is he was a panic buy. Barcelona buying cesc on the other hand, was a marquee signing for them.
Man city buying nasri, was a marquee signing, for them. Its about taking the best players from the top teams to make your team THE best.

People arent buzzing about podolski coming to arsenal, they are still asking WHO ELSE is coming?

If cavani came to Arsenal, nobody would even care about the rest of the summer.
why? Because its a marquee signing.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fabregas is a world class player... But at Barca... barely making the cut...

All Arsenal need is Chamberlain to be a regular first teamer, after all a couple of years ago he scored more technical points from sky sport scout than that Hazard player everyone keeps harping on about, and will most probably improve even more. Then allow Miyaichi to scare a few defenders. Most of Arsenal's recent problems have been due to their horrendous and continual injury problems. As the last couple of months have shown, we are more than good enough to compete against the best of the rest when we have a fully fit squad.

Although I would like to see poldolski and young Eriksen from Ajax arrive.

Believable21 Unbelievable6

Yes, absolutely right, and also Wilshere's on his way back as well, and Spuds get stuffed in the semi's today.Happy days.

Hey all,

All this talk of goetze hazard blah blah - what i would like to see and i think its definately doable is this though:

Verthongan and Erikssen double sweep from Ajax

then podolski - obv

then belhanda/m'villa -- in all honesty just one of these would be great

i think this would bring a VERY strong balance in every area and believe christian Erikssen is a massive prospect who would slip into the team perfectly

Woody

Believable17 Unbelievable7

If we got Eriksen (whom on there seems to be a half decent chance of getting, along with Vertonghen) then the need for Belhanda and M'Vila is negated.

a) Vertonghen can play very well as a DM, and I think he should be played there as his leadership skills would go a long way in midfield.

b) Eriksen is a CAM, so no need for Belhanda.

Podolski
another forward
Eriksen
Vertonghen
experienced GK

Do-able and fantastic.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we bought Belhanda, we wouldn't need to sign anyone else. Arteta is our DM, Song goes into the CM pile and Belhand and the Ox as ACMs are we are LETHAL.

Agree0 Disagree0

We don't need erikson AND belhanda, one or the other would be amazing
Db7

Agree0 Disagree0

Joel Campbell scores the winner to dent Montpellier's title bid.

Our inside man to help get Belhanda!

Billybob

Agree0 Disagree0

This would challenge for the title I believe.
K

Agree0 Disagree0

This seems excessive:
Podolski
Belhanda OR eriksen
Vertoghen

This would be an immensely successful transfer window for us. Totally unlikely...

Look lets be realistic, we know wenger wants 2 strikers and a wide player. I would like another centre back,But iam not sure he will buy one.WE do have money to spend and will get the players we need, but we know we can't compete with Man.city and Chelsea when it comes to wages and they can out bid us. But if there is one manager who can find us the right players its wenger. Podolski , would be a fantastic signing, and with another top striker and wide player, would give us a great chance to fight for the title. Wilshere was a big miss this season and i have a feeling him and Arteta, will be a sensational, midfield pairing.

Believable11 Unbelievable4

Centre back?

Like vertongen, who we couldn't be more keen on if you listen to the media

D

Agree0 Disagree0

Why would we need to get another striker and a wide player after getting Podolski? I feel this Summer we have to get cover for our fullbacks and maybe an experienced goalkeeper. If there is a need for strengthening any where else it can be done during the January transfer window.

Sydney Gooner

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't understand how you, and many other people believe we need another winger. I know another Striker is important and getting Wilshere back will be vital next season, but THE most important summer signing and focus should be placed on a creative/ attacking midfielder. Period. Even with Wilshere's return that would mean we'd still only have him as the stand-alone creative/ attacking midfielder in the team. Lets face that Ramsey just can't and never will cut it, and bar him we have no stand-out star talent fit for that role. Neither Fabregas or Nasri have been successfully replaced yet. That's where our focus should lie in the summer market.

Agree0 Disagree0

That would be poldolski (wide) Dempsey (CF) and a youngser = 25mil, sure we got more than this to spend

Agree0 Disagree0

We need a back up goalie
we need a centre back, you need 4 quality ctr backs to compete for 4 trophys.
we need a striker or 2.

these are the emergency requirements,

Podolski, Vertongon, Jaskalinen,

AND WE MUST KEEP VAN P

i think we need a lb
my bet baines or mathieu of valencia

goonernd

Believable3 Unbelievable23

Whilst I do agree on our need for a lb, matheiu certainly ain't it.

Baines maybe, but I feel Everton are on the cusp of something, so don't expect him to be sold just yet.

Ideally I'd like Tremoulinas of bordeaux, or Digne of Lille, who's really making strides.

D

Agree0 Disagree0

Why should buy another leftback?
we got gibbs and santos.better buy vertonghen coz he can cover song, centre back,or left back.don waste the money to spend on wrong position.
