arsenal to sign ex Scottish first division player Robert Barr after impressing scouts in a series of recent games whilst a bid for Celtic's wanyama is to be made later this week.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sign shawcross n diame instead

Agree0 Disagree0

Dreaming... Arsene won't buy any attacking players as in his eyes we are about to sign Theo which will be a 'new' signing!

It's a she as I agree with some that we are about 3 players away from challenging the top 3.

They are a striker (reliable), right back and most of all a DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

Does anyone have any news on Zarate or hopefully a new right back to replace sagna?

Believable4 Unbelievable38

Perhaps we could offer him to PSG for something in the range of 10+ million. Then hijack Newcastle's bid for Debuchy.

YG

Agree0 Disagree0

Why to replace sagna? the only reason why he is struggling is because he is being overworked. ox is pathetic at helping out defensively and he is struggling because of it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Zarate is a striker.

I think you mean Zapata; he joined Juve (or another big Italian club) last summer relatively cheaply and quietly, we never really showed any interest. He would have been a really good signing for RB and CB.

Just thought I would share some news on a Sneijder a player some have linked with us. German Journalist Rafa Honigstein, says Inter are so desperate to sort the issue out that they may even waive any fee for him, the issue is that Sneijder won't take a pay cut and as such any premier league clubs interested would want Inter to subsidise some of his wages which they are unhappy to do, many clubs are also put off by his recent injury record and the fact he hasn't played for so long meaning he may not be able to come in, in January and make an instant impact. Only Russian side Anzi seem at this moment willing to pay him the wages he wants and give Inter a fee.

He also says the recent rumours linking Lewandowski to united are nothing more than an attempt to get him a better deal at Dortmund. They did want him in the summer in a package deal with Kagawa but it feel through and we all know who they got instead.

Do Arsenal really need a striker if Walcott stays?
Giroud has taken a little time to settle in but he has started scoring some good goals, and if he gets injured Walcott can play up front. Giroud was the top goal scorer in the french league last season, and only a couple were headers, he reminds me of Adebayor when he played at Arsenal. It is the players around him that need improving! Did anyone not see Gevinho's miss against Bradford? and im sure Ramsey gives the ball away more than anyone else on the pitch! Podolski and Carzorla have been good but why did Wenger not sign Mata before he went to chelsea when he had the chance? We need one or two players of Mata's quality added to the team to challenge for silverwear! Just to take our squad to the next level!

Believable40 Unbelievable26

Need a winger who actually wants to play there

Agree2 Disagree0

We need players who are up for it in all games....not just Utd, Chelsea and spuds.......Southampton wanted it more....Segna had his worse game....Gibbs didnt look much better....

Agree1 Disagree0

Giroud works hard and will score a few goals. He's just not a 20+ striker.

Agree2 Disagree1

Giroud is too slow. Podolski hasn't been any good for years.

Agree0 Disagree1

02 Jan 2013 21:43:23
Gibbs was miles better. SAGNA looked hung over and need a kick up the bum we need a true leader, a fighter someone with the desire to win and stay at the club for more a long time.

Agree0 Disagree0

Walcott is not consistent enough at the top level.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes we do need a central striker, so many times we get it into the final third and nothing comes from it, there is never enough shots on target bar the odd game tans clearly we are a massive club and should therefore have a prolific striker. Theo will be great for us as he is a great forward but he need competition there is a clear gap in arsenal since rvp was stupidly sold.
Can you imagine a striker close to his skill up front with our current team? But I really think that we need some strength in the middle this is priority a dm is needed we look strong when diaby isn't injured great midfield but arteta, Wilshire cazorla however great they are they are similar players there all naturally attacking midfielders. When a team puts pressure on our midfield they struggle because of lack of strength.

Ben gunner

Agree0 Disagree0

The problem is, we play far far too slow. When we played Newcastle in the 2nd half we had a flowing look to our game. Played Southampton and everything took an age. This is our problem and it needs sorting. As for strikers, we do need a prolific striker and a strong DM and a Strong fast LB. But the problem is still the speed and flow of our play. TACTICS all wrong.

No the one person who gives the ball away the most is Gervinho the one person who falls over himself the most is Gervinho and the the player who messes up the most, you guest it, Gervinho. How this guy asked his way into a transfer with us is unreal he is absolutely useless.

Agree0 Disagree0

Did you not see the Southampton Game ? Yes we do, And Please lay of Giroud people, i think he will get us 20+ goals, maybe not this season, but he will, give the man time, id be happy with one signing in Jan, A defensive Midfield player, if we can get D Villa as well, then i would be a happy man

perosnally i think january should be about clearing out the rubbish. Concentrate on the summer to bring in big names.

take what we can get as this was what man utd did a few years back to get rid of the deadwood.

sell: squillaci, (FREE) Denilson (3M), Santos (3M), Djorou (5M), Arshavin (5M), Chamakh (3M), Bendtner (3M), Fabianski (FREE),

hopefully we can generate at least 20m from these sales.

Believable50 Unbelievable17

02 Jan 2013 17:02:53
You can't just make up values for these players. Also their wages are a huge deterent to any potential buyer.

Agree2 Disagree0

I doubt you would get any money for squillaci/fabianski/arshavin as their contracts are up in the summer.
would imagine for the rest who have at least 1-2 years left you could get £4-8m but you could wipe roughly £18m in wages off the books

Agree0 Disagree0

Problem isnt that simple. Player needs to agree to go. For player to agree to go, receiving club needs to offer similar wages to those received for scratching ones arse at Arsenal. As player is a big pile of rubbish, receiving club is understandably reticent about paying such wages. Player remains at arsenal to see out contract.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we miss out on the Champions League then we will not have the money nor the appeal to buy "big names" in the summer. The squad must be improved now to ensure that we get CL football and show the fans, players, and possible future purchases that we have ambition.

Agree1 Disagree0

And where is that going to get us. 5th 6th or even 7th place. We need a defensive mid as a must and also a top class left back.

Agree0 Disagree0

You will not get 10 million for the players you name, i bet most if not all are still clogging up our squad when the transfer window closes. WENGER OUT !

02 Jan 2013 20:46:35
Arsenal have been trying to off load these players.....the problem is the hugh wages these players are on.....40k-55k per week and Arsharvin 80K.....although in Arsharvins defence, he was amazing playing For Russia just before we brought him......But then Wenger buys him and instead of playing him in the central role sitting between the forward and midfield, Wenger sticks him on the left and expects him to chase back and cover the left back.....and that just wasnt his game.Look at the four goals go at anfield he scored, he sat in a more central role in that game.....its not as if he wasnt ever a good player, he was a very fine player and captain of his country.....There is only one person responsible for the signings, and the money they are paid....Wenger.....Unlike in the past we brought top quality players from the french league.....Both Viera and Henry went to Italy first, but Pires and Petit were established players......As far as i know Gills Grimandi is Wengers main Scout in france....What ever went wrong......Gervinho is terrible.....I think there is far better players, in terms of technique in Spain...although Alan Pardew has done very well recruting from france. In fact if you look at the signings both David Moyes and Pardew have made in the last 18 months, it puts us to shame. Its more a about motivation and commitment rather that personal that angers me....you never get a half hearted performance from the Everton team.....Even the Ox was swanning around like he was Lional Messi......youve got to work a lot harder to turn potential into a really good player.....km

Believable46 Unbelievable11

Hannover native here. This is totally true, loan until the summer likely, then if we are happy with him we'll look to buy, 4m tops, if we make the Europa League again.
Any insight on his strengths/weaknesses, haven't really seen him play much because¦well¦he hasn't played much recently. We are lacking a defender with massive positional awareness.

Agree1 Disagree0

Rosicky was crucial for us last season and he is older plus injury prone so I doubt we'd get much for him.
If it's true that he's moving on I hope it's because we're buying Lewis Holtby or some other talented/creative central midfielder.
No point in losing a valuable player for very little if there isn't a good replacement coming in right away.

Wenger probably thinks there isnt a positive correlation between price tag and performance.

lopez would be alright, but its a 50/50. He isnt cazorla quality...he isnt lightning fast and he hasnt played regular football for a few months now.

total gamble in my opinion.

Would rather take both munian and llorente from bilbao for 35m and have a more proven/compatible attack option.

Expect some news (positive I suspect) on Theo's contract soon, apparently his representatives are meeting with Arsenal as we speak.

This needs to be sorted out before we can look at signing any forward players as Theo wants to play more often up front, this means we will probably sign a winger (Adrian Lopez looks favourite at the moment) if Theo does not sign we will probably look at a striker and Theo will be sold.

All makes sense really, my hope is that he signs and plays up front alternately with Giroud depending on the type of game, I also feel they could play together in some games as well.

Fingers crossed.

Believable43 Unbelievable9

They'd work well against Stoke, Giroud's height to bring it down/knock it on due to Stoke's high defensive line Walcott's pace will be vital.

Anyway, good post and signs look positive at the moment..

Looks like there could be a bit of transfer business going on this month.
First move that looks set to happen is Johan Djourou leaving the club for Hannover. Apparently it will be a loan deal for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent move in the Summer. This begs the question " Will a replacement come in?".
The truth of the matter is that whoever comes in is likely to be happy to play 4th Centre Back or they are versatile. The only top talent on Arsenal's radar is Yanga Mbwia, who can also play as a CDM. However, it is likely that this won't happen after he signed a new contract in the Summer and made flattering comments about wanting to play for United the other day. Therefore the likliehood is that Djourou's replacement will either be young or someone already in the squad.

If the Centre Back will be used from the squad it is possible that Squilaci and Miquel will become 4th and 5th choice CB's for the rest of the season before a permanent deal for Djourou is concluded in the Summer.

This isn't really a bad thing as the chances of Squillaci or Miquel actually getting any playing time is very slim.

Believable14 Unbelievable3

Would love to see miquel get some more game time at cb in cup matches only ever seen him play left back for the first team which he did not suit at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

Miquel could do with some more game time. he's not a bad player and he is still very young, quite happy with him as 4th centre half.

Hey Edd, which positions are Arsenal REALLY interested in..? And which players Arsenal are monitoring..?

ED Who do you think we will sign in jan?
I hope we buy some agile left winger and a defender

{Ed002's Note - Arsenal have an interest in a striker still and have certainly looked at Adrian Lopez, Lewandowski, Negredo, Shakhtar Donetsk's Adriano (as a cheaper option to Damiao). There has also been interest shown in Udinese's right back Dusan Basta. In midfield I think the club made a mistake not pushing ahead with the purchase of Wanyama in the summer but Benat and the more flexible Mbiwa have been looked at recently. There has also been a little interest in the likes of Markovic, Lars Bender, Konoplyanka and Hatem Ben Arfa but I cannot see anything coming to fruition there and it is likely more wishful thinking than anything serious. It is hard to see what interest remains in the likes of M'Vila, Llorente, Dragovic and Wanyama who were all previously of interest - although it is still possible the club will go back to M'Vila. I understand that interest in Holtby is still there and there is interest in Zaha if a deal for Walcott cannot be achieved.}

Believable5 Unbelievable4

Ed, does interest mean that a scout has submitted a favourable report or that the player has been watched for multiple performances and report submitted by the chief coach Rowley, or as in the case of Sir Alex seen a video!! {Ed002's Note - Interest really falls in to two categories - confirmed and unconfirmed. The "confirmation" of interest would have been provided by a club representative, or someone trustworthy (some reliable agents, some reliable media folk) etc.. In most cases it will be correct. "Unconfirmed" interest would be some sort of reasonably-well trusted media source or an agent. Sometimes correct but sometimes way, way off the mark and speculative. Otherwise things generally fall in to the category of being "reported" which typically can be traced by to a blog, a site like this, or something like tribalgoaloffside.co.uk - pinch of salt but may strike lucky now and again.}

An ideal January, I am looking forward to...

1. Zaha - will have to compete for his signature but he looks like he could be the real deal...

2. DM - M'Villa - in the region of 10-13 mill... exactly what we need on the field to break up opp. play...

3. Let Steve Bould have a say and influence the players more... I dont know what is happening between AW and him but it looks like he is not being given the freedom he would want.... In the early part of the season he would get up and stand by the technical area motivating players... Now he just sits there like PR used to...

4. Give some of the youngsters a run up in the team... Gnabry does look like he could start integrating into the team...

5. Revert to 4-4-2... with Giroud and Walcott playing of each other... there was a lot of talk of Wenger planning to change the system earlier in the season... Its time he thought over it sincerely...

DG

Believable29 Unbelievable9

We do not have the players for 4-4-2, Cazorla, Wilshere and Arteta and you are adding M'Vilia would be competing for 2 spots.

We would also need to sign several more strikers as backup

Agree2 Disagree0

Cazorla can play on the wing, and in fact has only played in his current position with Arsenal.

Conor

Agree0 Disagree0

1. agree
2. agree
3. agree
4. not sure we need to dip down to that level of youth team players, we still have enough on the bench more worthy of an outing like coquelin and jenkinson before we slot gnabry in at the deep end again
5. if 1 and 2 are achievable then theres no need to revert to 4-4-2. although it might be good to mix it up from time to time depending on the opposition.

Agree0 Disagree0

Zaha will not be joining if walcott signs

Agree0 Disagree0

Jack is to young yet he is a good sub thats it. we need real work horses in midfield not on and off when the going gets tough. we aint got one midfielder who wants to work hard and win the battles, a load of tap dancers.

Agree0 Disagree3

I think we were at our best with 4-4-2 with two wide men and a holding midfileder. Not sure why we don't have the players for that system! All that is needed, is what we have been crying out for - a stromg holding midfielder. Cazorla can play behind walcott or Giroud, leaving space for Jack to get forward. Arteta would then have to fight for his place but can play the holding role if necessary.

Agree0 Disagree0

When have we ever played a holding midfielder?

Closest was Gilberto and he was certainly not a Makelele.

There is very little difference between 4-4-2 and 4-3-3. Bergkamp as a second striker played in similar positions to where Cazorla plays now. I do not think Wenger has ever regularly played with 2 centre forwards?

Agree0 Disagree0

Ive heard from a reliable source that AW is looking to bring the young and speedy LB Jernade Meade permanetly. Personally I believe it would be a good call, what do you think Edd? {Ed027's Note - i would'nt mind but him aswell as Gibbs need experience, loan would be better firsy

edd how possible will spurs get Willian and Damaio {Ed002's Note - It will be about money.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Spurs and Juventus have all shown an interest in Willian. Last January Chelsea backed off from buying the player as Shakhtar were looking for 35M euros for the player - the same figure that scared off Spurs in the summer.}

Leandro Damiao remains of interest to several clubs including Spurs, Arsenal, PSG, Roma, Sporting Lisbon, Inter, Milan and Juventus. Lyon and Barcelona seem to have dropped any interest they had in the player. January 2013 may be a likely time to move. The summer saw rejected bids from Spurs and PSG. Inter, Roma or Juventus may force a move - and these remain the most likely destinations right now. His club value him at an unrealistic 60M euro which they obviously won't get and they don't want to sell. The player says wants to move to Chelsea but their interest would only be there if other targets were not achievable, but they have taken a look at him.}

Believable8 Unbelievable1

02 Jan 2013 00:09:30
edd any update on strootman , isco, adrian lopez, villa can you say the possibility of the individuals coming to arsenal {Ed002's Note - Manchester United and Liverpool took a look at Kevin Strootman last season but tentative enquiries were met by a reluctance to sell so soon after arriving. His performances have attracted further interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, Valencia, AC Milan, Schalke 04 and Hamburg. I expect him to move to Manchester United or Milan perhaps in January, if not in the summer.

Barcelona, Manchester City, Juventus and Spurs have shown an interest in Isco and he came close to a move to Dortmund, who may still follow up the matter. Chelsea had someone watch Isco in a recent game against Granada I suspect AC Milan might look to the player as well. There were rumours of interest from Real Madrid, Manchester United and Arsenal. Malaga wanted 21M euros and are now negotiating an increase in his release clause to 42M euros using a pay rise to tempt the player to agree. If they are forced to sell - and they don't want to, I would suspect Juventus and Manchester City are best placed right now. A move in January is by no means certain as Malaga are looking to have Isco sign a new long-term contract which would also address the release clause and pay rise which are currently being discussed.

I understand that there has been a direct approach from Arsenal to Atletico Madrid about the player but I do not know if that has yet resulted in a firm offer - but it is likely just to be a matter time before one is made. Adrian Lopez is of serious interest to Arsenal and he remains one player that could make the move in January. Spurs showed interest in the player during the summer but their bid was rejected. Whilst Atletico are looking to hang on to Lopez and are looking to have him agree a new contract they are aware that a move away is likely and are actively looking for a replacement - as they are for Falcao who they also expect to move for in the summer.

Given Villa has never wanted to play outside of Spain, is 30+ and no doubt be expensive in terms of insurance and wages, I am not so sure it would be a great move by the club. Whilst he and Sanchez will be sacrificed, I suspect the summer is the more likely time for a move.}
