Metal,
Just bringing previous post to the top.
With regard to when I said the 40m + £1 bid was insulting. If your selling a house for example and its listed as offers over £1m would it get sold for £1m and £1. You would probably laugh at the estate agent who informed you of the offer.
I think if we went in with 41m we wouldn't now be having comments what liverpool are making come out that we are playing games or lacking class.

{Ed022's Note - Think about it though, we've saved £999,999!}

There is no lack of respect at all. If a player has a release clause of £40m why would you offer £41m? It is a waste of £1m. The £1 on top of the £40m was simply to ensure we met the clause that Liverpool agreed to.
Brendan Rogers it the man who has shown no repect but slagging off our great club. Arsene has done nothing but act appropriately. He could have acted like Ancellotti or Mourinho and make blatent comments but he has not.
Rogers is simply upset that his best player wants to leave as he knows without him he will be very lucky to keep his job for the whole season. Liverpool are a ruined club who are stuck in the past, whether it is their past glory days or the Hillsborough disaster. They need to move forward and Rogers is not going to help them do that at all.

Yes but Paul this is not a property listing with a guide price, we're talking about a human being with a supposed clause in his contract that states the legally acceptable fee is 'over £40m' or even 'exactly £40m'. All the one pound does is negate the LFC defence that actually they can reject £40m because it had to be *more* than £40m. We've done that, if the clause exists. Wenger believes so and that's why he's letting it sit. It's a fixed price if all is to be believed and we've met it, nothing ridiculous or classless about it.

If this clause is not in the contract, then yes we can sit and mull over how daft the bid was, but even that would be unfair because the bid was made with the belief that the clause does exist. So the only time it would be ridiculous is if LFC said 'we value Suarez at £40m and won't consider anything less' and then we go and bid £40'000'001 - then I would agree. But they have said they value him at closer to £55m+ so there's a reason we've only bid £40m.
You really cannot compare a fixed price for a player given certain terms are met, and a guide price for a house. And I agree, I'd laugh a £1'000'001 offer for a guide-listed house valued at 'over £1m'.

Hey. We could have offered £40m+1p, he should count himself lucky. Least now he can buy some bon bons.

40m for Suarez + £1 for Downing {Ed022's Note - I'd want change from the £1 to be honest...}

Offers over in house prices do not stop offers below that value. Any thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay!

Haha nice1 NI gunner.

When the bid broke, I jokingly said I was shocked- by the £1 and not the 1p that is. Wenger paying 99p more than he has to?

That must be the escalation in "financial firepower" IG was talking about.
