It was pretty obvious, due to his prolonged absence, that Welbecks's injury was more serious than we were led to believe. I understand the secrecy, as any summer transfer negotiations would have been more difficult if clubs knew that we were desperate to sign a forward.
In reality, Welbeck is unlikely to be fit before Christmas, which leaves us with one regular central striker. It seems strange that we didn't keep Akpom, who would have giiven us an option. Now we must rely upon Walcott or Sanchez to cover Giroud. Possibly Campbell as well.
The injury situation is poor, after only 4 matches we are already without Rosicky, Wilshere, Welbeck & Ozil. Let's hope we get through the internationals unscathed. On a positive note, I watched the Newcastle match for the first time as I missed it due to a holiday and I was pleasantly surprised how well we played, apart from our finishing. The defence looked solid with Gabriel settling in well. Aside from Man City, none of the other usual top four contenders are playing well. LIverpool and Tottenham have gone backwards, whilst Chelsea and Man U appear to have problems.
