Good article Ed, I was only just getting into football in 1970 so only really remember Pele from new York cosmos and TV footage of previous world cups but what a player he was!
To think what he would cost in today's game compared to Neymar:-)

{Ed001's Note - I wonder if they would still name him a national treasure to block him leaving Brazil in the modern era?}

G62 - We are a similar age, so I have similar memories to you of Pele. I think it would have been interesting to see how he would have faired in a top European League as I seem to recall him playing for Santos and an American team.

Robbie, something tells me he’d have coped just fine and would have no issues cutting it.

They'd be within there rights to declare him treasure trove Ed mate :-)
I'm pretty sure he would have mesmerised European defences as he did Brazilian and international ones RG mate, I remember people talking about hin when I was a kid and saying the only way to stop him was kick him as I think Uruguay did.
My favourite goal I've seen from Pele was against Sweden where he chipped the ball over the full stood keeper and ran round him to tap the ball in the net, pure class on grass even Dennis Bergkamp couldn't match, I can't pay Pele a higher compliment than to say Bergkamp Just wasn't in the same league and I rate Dennis as ours and the premier leagues best ever player.

{Ed001's Note - how old are you lot? I never saw him play live as I am not old enough.}

If you can't Remember The man from UNCLE, The Invaders or Pele Ed001 then I feel for you Ed001 mate, the 60s really was a golden era in some ways mate, what about the Beatles Gerry and the pace makers and Ken Dodd?

{Ed001's Note - I could never forget Doddy he was my grandad's best mate, spent many a happy 8 hours watching his 1 hour shows.}

I guess you spent your holidays in Notty Ash then Ed :-)

{Ed001's Note - I did go there many times during the holidays. It was Doddy that got me into comps, as he always used to tell me that's what I should be doing when I grew up. When you are a kid and a legend like Ken Dodd tells you something, you listen and take note and it stays with you. Oh and I used to have blooming hundreds of 'tickle sticks'. Never knew what I was meant to do with them but he kept giving me them.}

Once a Diddy man always a Diddy man Ed mate, you can take the boy out of Diddy land.

{Ed001's Note - there are worse things to be that's for sure.}

Don’t worry Ed i was barely old enough to catch the invincibles playing.

{Ed001's Note - you are not quite as old as G62 then, but not far off it as that was in the 1880's when Preston North End went undefeated throughout a season.....}
