Fabio Paratici being touted as our new director of football apparently.

This is internet rumour, any substance to it do we think?

I'd normally say no, but this would be a savvy move to lay foundations for a post-wenger arsenal. Which one day will happen.

Out of interest eds could anyone shed any light on likely departures in the summer based on current evidence? Obviously players won't move on if replacements aren't identified, but we have been reportedly linked with most of Europe and the "wage bill" is already high in Ffp eyes.

poldi and Joel campbell are surely nailed on exits? If anyone will take them.

gav_minton

{Ed001's Note - as well as that Cazorla is a possibility, and a few of the fringe youth players, which makes more of a difference at Arsenal than other clubs. For some reason I don't understand Arsenal pay the highest wages to the young and fringe players and have done since Wenger arrived. The high earners are never overpaid at all, but the fringe ones have always bumped up the wage bill by being paid at a higher rate than equivalents at other Premier League clubs. Basically the ones out on loan are all available for transfer and it is expected a number of them will leave.}

1.) 17 Feb 2015 15:01:43
thats our main problem i feel ed, it makes them so hard to move on because no ones going to match their wages and so we are stuck with them and can't replace them

Carvalho has stated he's happy in Lisbon, and does not expect a deal before the deadline. Not entirely sure how reliable the source is but it quotes him directly.

Not good!

Who now? Kondogbia?

gav_minton

1.) Nothing is going to happen today,
Turn over and watch eastenders or something which you will enjoy!?

{Ed025's Note - enjoy and eastenders just dont go together dexy..

2.) Kondogbia wouild be great signing, given that Monaco are doing a "clear out" (or might as well be), send Coquelin.

Alternatively, what about a push for Toulalan. A bit of a veteran, but can play as deep-lying midfielder and at the back

3.) 01 Sep 2014 15:34:50
Abou Diaby!

4.) No one mate. I've accepted that when david ornstein said so.

left it too late, any player coming in now will be a panic buy.

Carvalho ain't moving, Bacca ain't moving, so unless we get some CB cover, we are pretty much stabbing ourselves in the foot repeatedly again and again.

we did not have a CF backup since thierry left, RVP was always injured, then we sold him and bought giroud and no cover, and now our luck has run out for that positon. only ourselves to blme.

ah transfer deadline day. Where every arsenal fan wastes a day constantly refreshing the page, yet we know deep down nothing will happen until at least 8pm. the eds have said there's an outside chance of 2 layers arriving, but aren't sure who or even if they will. So based on this:

My completely unsubstantiated guess would be, calvalho and bernard on loan.

opinions? and who would you think? realistic as possible.

gav_minton

1.) I'm not ruling out a late, expensive double swoop for Khedira and Benzema - £55mil for the pair? Or maybe just Benzema for £40/£45? He's got to be one of the few top quality strikers in a position to move, with the arrival of the likes of James and now Hernandez on Loan. Could be he's the striker we're after?

10 Jul 2014 23:45:23
So, let start the metaphorical betting. Who we going to sign next? (I'm posting this after Debuchy sanchez has gone through)

Names not positions.

gav_minton

1.) Debuchy hasn't been officially confirmed yet?

2.) A dm. I hope it'll be Bender or Snyder, but Khadira sure is good as well. (i just have a fear that he isn't strong enough in the passing game to connect our defense and midfield the way Arteta has done so well)

3.) 11 Jul 2014 15:05:27
Whilst I'm not an Arteta detractor, I do think that Khedira is technically better in all respects. He would be an outstanding signing, even with those wages! Not keen on Sneijder at all.

4.) 11 Jul 2014 16:23:29
Khedira

Gooner83

5.) Urban I think he meant schneiderlin mate but cba to spell it properly

Who do you guys see becoming the next generation of A-list club managers once the current crop retire?

Poch is an obvious choice I could see I'm trying madrid one day, I'm sure Eddie howe and Ron Koeman would probably get a mention too.

What obscure/ under recognised managers do you guys see (if any) in top jobs in the future?

I'd be interested to hear some eds opinions on this too if possible?

gav_minton

{Ed001's Note - why Eddie Howe? I don't get the hype about him at all. He is another Roberto Martinez, pass, pass, pass, for passing's sake, far too much for my liking. The odd good result does not cover up the fact that he has spent large sums to produce a very mediocre team who play boring football. Nice guy like, which is why the media fawn over him like they did Martinez.}

1.) 18 Oct 2016 08:19:36
Someone I rate is Paul Lambert I know since leaving Norwich he hasn't exactly pulled up any trees at Villa or Blackburn but I think at the right club he could have his most successful managerial days still ahead of him.

2.) 18 Oct 2016 08:40:18
Simone zidane Southampton manager is also doing well.

{Ed001's Note - Zidane? Another one who has done nothing yet. I fail to understand the hype about him. There is a lot of stuff bubbling under the surface there ready to crash and burn soon.}

3.) 18 Oct 2016 09:46:21
I agree with Eddie howe comment tbf ed. Just through his name in as it comes I totally his conversation often.

Zidane I do think rate as a manager personally. I think k his stature probably keeps the madrid dressing room under control but that's about it.

I thought remy garde would come good, apparently not.

{Ed001's Note - the Madrid dressing room is not under control, he couldn't keep the B team dressing room under control either.}

4.) 18 Oct 2016 10:19:02
Some managers are good as long as they have lots of money to spend some are useless with lots of money but great on a tight budget, horses for courses.
Neil Warnock is brilliant at getting teams promoted but not so good in the premier league once thier, Benitez is a very good tactition in big games but over a season struggles not to tinker plus spends like money is going out of fashion.
Mourinho at Norwich I think would struggle as would Alex Neil at Utd and Gardiola taking over at somewhere like Southampton and not only keeping them up but improving them dispite selling all their best players like Keoman did is hard to imagine.
Some managers are made for big clubs while others are at their best with smaller clubs and some managers who struggle in domestic league's excell at international level.

5.) 18 Oct 2016 10:31:39
Sam Allardyce?

Oh wait 😁.

6.) 18 Oct 2016 15:23:25
I thought Montanier could come good but he's not doing great over here in Nottingham.

I don't understand how some managers get hype and what it's based on - for example Maclaren has had an adventurous luxurious career ranging from managing abroad to managing the National team (plus he's still getting offers) yet the only place he's done well is Middlesborough and he's done embarassingly bad at some places (once again, here in Nottingham for example) - another less than average Megson/ Coyle/ Jewel for me.

G62, were you joking with the Lambert comment?

For me, Howe isn't as bad as Ed makes out, he's not that good and has had loads of finances compared to the other teams in his league - except when they come to the PL ofcourse. They're football can be boring, except for last weekends 6-1 demolition of Hull, but he's still got the results to gain promotion time and time again. Some managers *cough* LVG *cough* can't even get the results despite ridiculous finances and that can't be overlooked. HE is a nice guy and the media lap that up, he's definitely overrated but far from dog sh*te in my opinion.

7.) 18 Oct 2016 16:14:17
Strangely enough Perfect I'm not joking mate, I bet villa fans would rather he'd stayed if they could rewind time.
He had a tough time there but the club wasn't in the best shape when he arrived and it's certainly gone down hill since he left mate, it's easy to predict big things for Koeman because his career is on a high but 3 years ago who would have taken him above Southampton?

8.) 18 Oct 2016 19:00:22
Yeah fair point about Koeman but all in all even if you don't think Lambert's done that bad as a manager, he's hardly done enough to be considered 'up there' for me.

9.) 18 Oct 2016 20:33:43
Hi Perfect mate, the question was what obscure under recognised managers do you think will become A list managers in the future mate,
Personally I think Lambert has more to give than we saw at Via or Blackburn and with the right club could rebuild his reputation he was building quite nicely at Norwich, he chose badly with Villa but I think he has what it takes to come back again.
Just my view mate as I don't see that many up and coming I think stand out from the crowds, Eddie Howe would be a super big gamble for any of the big 7 premier league clubs to take unless he went from Bournemouth to another premier league club and stood out while Poch is already with one of the big 7.

10.) 19 Oct 2016 12:43:01
Shaun Dyche each club he has been at he has updated the training facilities and structure and done a great job.

11.) 19 Oct 2016 15:54:21
True enough G62, that is the question, my mistake. I agree with your bit about there not being many obvious up and coming English managers for sure.

I though Monk looked good at Swansea, Warburton looked good at Brentford and Lennon looked good at Celtic but it just proves that anything can happen and so I suppose Lambert could yet prove me wrong :)

12.) 19 Oct 2016 17:08:42
And he could equally make me look silly if he bombs at his next club to mate :-)
Sometimes we all call them right and other times we just hope no one remembers what we predicted in the first place :-)

10 Sep 2016 18:51:26
Eds random question not specifically arsenal related.

We've seen transfer fees go through the roof in recent years, largely due to the influx of money into the sport. (I'm going to leave the prem tv deal out of this as it complicates things in my opinion) oil money from the Arab states and Russia, Chinese state money now and big American business money the main sources at a glance.

So prices went through the roof, because there wasn't the quantity of truly elite players around to satisfy the new demand. So my question is, why haven't clubs dramatically scaled up their youth systems to try and produce a larger quantity of elite players? Or have they? I understand things take time and genetics and general talent have a say in the end product of a youth academy, but with the money on offer for players, selling clubs like Everton, Porto, benfica etc have made huge sums of money (I hear Everton is debt free now? Is that still true? )
Why don't we see the brand names of football like arsenal, man utd etc investing more in grass roots football?, because to me there's serious money to be made!

I'm basing all this on just my observations of what I see in my local area and through general football reading, so it may be a twisted view, literally was just curious though.

Cheers in advance.

gav_minton

{Ed025's Note - some still do gav, everton for example have a great youth policy and have made players like rooney and stones to a certain extent household names and its helped with financing the club, some wont take the chance as academy,s can be very costly to run and its a bit of a gamble but i think it can only help in the development of young players especially english to enhance the national side mate..

1.) 10 Sep 2016 22:21:58
I think England should pay clubs for the use of their players during tournaments say £1 million performance, this would encourage teams to produce players for the national side as a team that could produce 5 players who played 5 games at a finals would receive a £25 million bonus.
This could be funded by a levy on the TV money the premier league brings in meaning instead of each club receiving £80 million they got £75 each million with the FA receiving the other £100 million.
If a team produced 1 England player they would break even and be quids in if they produced 2, perfect? No but with some fine tuning and tweaking it could be.

2.) 11 Sep 2016 11:12:39
62 - I agree but who would have been paid for Carrick, Terry, Cole, lampard etc? Utd and Chelsea or Hammers and us?
It's not always the producers who have them at the height of their career.

3.) 11 Sep 2016 09:57:19
Cheers ed and g62.

Everton and Southampton for me in recent years have carried the youth academy torches.

Southampton from what I understand, with proper business management and attention to detail of the super ceo chap who was there turned their whole club around through academy investment.

I know very little about youth football but I do remember reading some time ago that Barcelona had nurtured dos Santos as a player to be sold to help finance the others developments, as he wasn't thought to have a long term future at the club.

Since writing this, real madrid's shop window environment popped into my head. €20million for di maria, isco, higuan etc then sell for €50-60million seems to be serving them well as a second revenue stream. Dortmund seem to average a pretty successful set up too.

When the wealth bubble pops in this sport there isn't half going to be some worried faces I imagine!

{Ed025's Note - and that time will come gav, the future has to be the young guys we nurture and im happy that everton seem to be doing that, but you have to give these youngsters a chance in the first team and blood them in properly, the likes of the bigger clubs seem content to buy foreign and the youngsters overlooked but hopefully this will change and a crop of really good home grown talent can flourish..

4.) 11 Sep 2016 17:11:01
Good question SY I'd have thought the easy and fairest way would be for either the fee paid to reflect the players potential for playing in finals or the selling clubs to negotiate a percentage of any funds earned,
John Stones will potentially win 100 England caps and may play in say 7 tournament finals wity an average of 4 games per tournament bringing in 28 million, so it depend on the deal Everton did with Barnsley and again the deal city did with Everton at the time of signing.

5.) 11 Sep 2016 18:14:05
It's a fair point with the wanting instant success you make ed. I can't really see why with the revenue streams clubs have they can't do both though personally. I guess they probably will with the tv deal now.

It seems like everyone knows, and has known for a while, that the breakaway league is coming and they want to get into the "elite clubs group" before the real polarisation of money starts. Those who invest heavily and don't make the grade will be thoroughly screwed I'd imagine.

I hope football doesn't get that lame.

{Ed025's Note - i hope so too gav but it seems like the have,s and have not,s gap is getting wider mate..

6.) 11 Sep 2016 19:14:33
I think a European or world league would be the end of football in a few short years, and also think some clubs who might be rubbing their hands now might find thier not as big a part of the plan as others would have them believe right now and would shortly after any breakaway find themselves extremely expendable.

7.) 12 Sep 2016 11:51:41
On the subject of using the youth ed, are you as surprised as I am that Galloway got loaned out? I think he showed last season that he has potential to be a good full back in the PL, I guess Koeman decided that he's more of a a useful reliable full back for a mid table team as opposed to a great full back for a eeurope-hopeful team?

OR maybe i'm just forgetting that even nowadays clubs do send players on loan with their development being the genuine interest (not just for shop window purposes) and perhaps he'll be used in the future.

{Ed025's Note - im hoping it is just for experience TPG, i think galloway has the potential to be a really good full back or center half, the thing is that we are quite strong in those area,s at the present and at least he is getting game time which will benefit him for the future mate..

Leicester apparently had a bid for Troy Deeney turned down.

Does this indicate Vardy might be off?

Oo the suspense grows :)

1.) 09 Jun 2016 17:47:18
I hope we don't get past the group stages as I can't put up with the media crap for too long. Jack get yourself on facebook and settle it all for us.

2.) 09 Jun 2016 17:50:49
There is obviously something in it! How can there not be.

3.) 09 Jun 2016 18:32:23
Troy Deeney is 72.47% likey to be in a premier league team next season that doesn't have a p in its name anywhere.

4.) 09 Jun 2016 18:47:40
Sanogo, he could be a replacement for that kramiric? Forward they signed before vardy learnt how to score.

He's been begging to leave since then, so it could be related to his exit instead?

5.) 09 Jun 2016 20:08:31
Stevie
I don't think you will when Wales pun you lot
I fancy a little flutter on us getting to the final.

6.) 09 Jun 2016 20:19:13
Hmmm.
I can certainly see where you're going with that, but I'm sure I read the other day they were going to bid for Deeney regardless of Vardy staying or not.

They need to add to their squad for the champions league anyway, the tempo at which they play, players are going to tire easily, now they're potentially looking at an extra 6-13 games in the coming season (I'm not counting on them making the UCL final to make it 13, but I didn't think they'd win the league last season either)

Hope you're right though, at this point I'd be happy with him announcing he's joining or not, just so it's not all over the papers and social media for another 4 weeks.

7.) 09 Jun 2016 21:02:59
Welsh did your lot manage to get a team together. At least you can now enjoy the experience.

8.) 09 Jun 2016 21:26:51
Gav I just don't see 1. Deeny leaving where he's adored to be number 2 and 2. I don't see Leicester spending £20 million for a bench warmer. But what you say is a possibility with the likelihood of it been correct of 1.2% lol.

{Ed025's Note - i am 80% certain that dags wishes he,d kept his mouth shut.. :)

9.) 09 Jun 2016 21:43:13
I'm 80% certain Dags will return to his driving job and give on the rumour pedling and what's on TV guide for an much easier life.

{Ed025's Note - even malaga could not believe it G62..

10.) 09 Jun 2016 21:45:32
I think dags forgot and logged in as dags instead of Malaga ed.

{Ed025's Note - i think your right mate.. :)

Paul Merson today "we should have bid 75million for benzema"

There's reputedly 200mil in the account maybe we should buy messi to.

What What a moron

1.) 04 Sep 2015 09:39:30
What he's saying is if your a player away from what you need to compete you have to push the boat out sometimes to make that happen as all the best teams have at times.
Rooney and Ferdinand were 30 million over a decade ago and it was a lot of money to pay especially for Rooney at 18 but now at how ever many premier league titles later they look like excellent business.
Principals are fantastic but when they stop you being all you can and shoukd be they become naïve mistakes.

2.) 06 Sep 2015 09:13:48
But if madrid wanted him to stay he is staying. Money is irrelevant in realistic terms

100% agree.

Although I don't personally see why he rates man city so highly. Pep rotates regularly so I can imagine sanch will love that, being on the bench every 5th week.

I also think man city really didn't get to grips with peps complicated roles for players last year. They don't come across as a team like juve, where a bunch of nutters want to win at all costs. It's more win through innovation I. m. o at man city. Outsmart the opponent.

Nothing wrong with that at all, but given Sanchez moans about our mentality, like to carry the ball and is very fluid in his position, i struggle to see who bar kompany has what he's after in manchester.

Bayern just makes more sense for him to me.

For the sakes of discussion, I think both elneny and xhaka can be part of a top midfield at arsenal.

I think both have suffered from lack of decent squad around them. If Ramsey was offering better deep midfield competition, as opposed to his tendency to wonder, or say Santi was fit, I think it's just easier to taylor the pairing to whatever opposition based on each's best attributes.

I like xhaka's smash tackles, although I agree he needs to learn when and where to do them. If it helps stop players like kondogbia against monaco that time (maybe wrong? ) running right through our centre midfield I'm in approval. I do also agree that it's even better if we have 11 players on the pitch.

Elneny i see as a decent cheap squad player in the Edu mould, does a job.
Time and competition could hone both well I. M. O.

I agree with you on those few RG. I'd maybe keep the ox as I think he'll come good.

Their development has been pretty on a par with young English players though hasn't it?

Wenger said some years ago "it's cheaper to buy from abroad and the players are more commited to success/ training etc than maybe an English counterpart may be. (paraphrasing here) .

So we went from being that "look arsenal have only fielded one English guy shock horror" headline every week 5 years ago.

So the English talent hoover got switched on and,

Now after a few years of seemingly trying to nurture English talent in our ranks. We have a few English lads who are maybe on the fringes of the squad after not developing as fast.
"We have too many reserve players/ deadwood on overpaid contracts".

For me he's got impact sub written allover him. His main/ only attribute is his pace. Teams just sit deep against us, we see it all the time. Walcott lacks he one on one capabilites of say Robben, who excells in that wide striker role.

If Walcott were to be subbed on with 20mins left, he may not score but you can bet well be playing football in their box for the next 20mins.

Fiestly i come in peace steve, resoect tour point, just discussing it.

If these circumstaces were different would we view this differently? Cantona under fergie never seemed to calm down. Even fergie admitted he couldn't control him. But he scored a lot too.

Big pat was partial to a leg breaker tackle every now and then for us too. Rush of blood to the head, nervous occasion. It happens, they're only human. The fact we were in the situation in the first place is the issue, Koscielny is just an unfortunate garnish.

I hear you though, arsenal are frustrating and a half right now.

As wealth in football is polarised into institutions like real madrid and man utd etc I think we're seeing a clamour to become just that by many clubs. With oil money around and now Chinese money, within ten years the premier league could look very different with only the top few teams being truely competitive.

This is all more than likely with a breakaway league and a huge wage bubble developing too. Regular participation in champions league stands us in better stead to be one of these top brass teams in the future I. My. O.

I mean what happens when nobody wants to pay paul pogba's wages abroad and man utd are stuck paying a percentage for another 5 years to move him on? Do that with enough players to such an extreme, surely they become financial liabilities instead of assets? Genuine question, what does everyone do then? Revenues can't grow forever at the same rate.

"The best no 10 in the world"

Jose mourinho's words on having managed him.

We all know he can go missing in big games, but Ronaldo won the balon d'or doing the same thing for real in the champions league.

Everyone used to champion mourinho's ruthless attitude towards players careers until it didn't work anymore.

Pep isn't from the same mould as him and has infinitely more class granted. But Barcelona were in a transitional phase when he took over. Eto'o and ronny were known problem players way before guadiola took over too. He also had the best player in the world come to the fore whilst he was there.

He also reportedly bowed to messi's demands to play in the middle at Zlatan's expense. If the decision works it's a genuis move (which granted it did) , if it didn't he'd have been classed as out of his depth.

For me arsenal's biggest issue is experience at big events. Since Czech signed he calmed us down a lot at the back. Arsenal look like a team scared of how hey know they can play. If le coq (random example) had the experience and calming Measure of say andrea pirlo I believe it galvanises everyone with confidence a little more.

Arsenal are and will continue to build. Stadium is good. League position is good (by anyone but a fews standards) and infrastructure is good. 1st team squad is good, staff are good, there are no glaring holes. Just a need for constant improvement, the rate at which will determine where we finish in the league I imagine.

half of an eventful season to go yet.
