Hello Ed's, any idea if arsenal are going to go back for Dayot Upamacano in January?

{Ed002's Note - I would not think there is any chance - I explained the cost.}

Hey Jim, 3 @ the back, Tor and Guen in front of them and 3 up front. That's only 8 outfield players, maybe I'm missing something. I too have run out of patience with Xhaka, I know he's supposed to protect the back line but maybe when our back line is more competent, our defensive mids will be able to do a better job. Who would want be goalie in this set up.

I totally agree Jim 3 4 3 is the sensible way forward given the players available at the moment.
Make sure you always start will 11 players by dropping Xhaka permanently.
Play 3 4 3 in every single game until Belerin and Tierney are both 100% fit and see if the players benefit from having a settled formation.
Decide your best 11 from currently available players and give them 4 or 5 games together and see what happens.
If you win 5 out of 5 leave well alone don't tinker fiddle or play about simply relax and enjoy.

That went off topic, but yeah, forget this 3 at the back total italia 90 nonsense, the only reason that came back was cos Conte went to that setup after we gave em a tonking. COYG.

3 st the back: totally whack.

I am also not a fan of the 3 at the back, because we still play two wingbacks not wide midfielders as part of the 4, so its a con, its not 3-4-3 at all, its 5-2-3. What you end up with is 3 central defenders still playing narrow and effectively marking just one center-forward, with a midfield two in front getting completely dominated and overun, which is exactly what our problem is. Also play 3-4-3 and you might as well send Cabellos back to RM, as he won't start in that formation? Much prefer the extra midfielder in a 4-3-3 with Ceballos mixed in with Torr and Willock/ Guen.

Fans continue to criticise Emery, but don't forget he has only had one season to form the squad as he wishes. He has brought in a total of 8 permanent signings, which includes young Martinelli and Tierney who has yet to start. Next season Saliva arrives.
I am sure Emery wishes to sell and replace: Ozil, Mkhitaryan and Mustafi. Is he convinced by either option at RB and Kolasinac at LB?
My main concern is the defensive side, let's see if the 3 returning defenders improve our defence.

Our display against Spurs was very encouraging, we were all over them for large parts of the game. The goals we conceded were poor but ultimately hard to blame on the manager.
First goal: individual error from Sokratis + individual error from Leno
Second goal: Utterly stupid from Xhaka.

If the football we put together in the second half is what we can begin to expect from Emery's team then I'm very impressed. Ironically it reminded me a lot of Poch's early days with Saints, in terms of the pressing, energy and attacking threat, but without the defensive stability (yet) .

Wenger won the title in his first full season.

Fans do continue to criticise Emery, in my view because there remain baffling elements to his leadership; accepting that not all transfers in and out will be done at his sole bidding, there has been some crazy activity:
* Ramsey's allowed departure
* Pepe - who of course could turn out to be very good - ahead of a proven Premier League player in Zaha, who publicly wanted to come, who could have been bought for the same if not less.
* the persisnet caution over playing Lacazette and Aubameyang together when it is plain to see they are a beautiful and harmonious strike force who bring out the best in each other.
* Torreira - by far and away our most effective defensive midfielder last season, but used so sparingly and often being favoured by.
Emery's most baffling muse of all: Xhaka.
I could bang on and on about Xhaka, but simply ask: why? And Captain too? Unfathomable.

To give balance: Iwobi. Up to £35m in total! Genuis, sheer genius.

Thoughts on reports from Italy that Mkhitaryan May join Roma on loan?

With rumours of a £3m fee for Monreal, it seems odd that the reported fee was only £250,000. Thoughts?

For some strange reason we wanted him gone, makes absolutely no sense to me but time will tell as always.

Hi G62 - I have felt that both Monreal and Kolasinac had deficiencies in their game. Monreal lacked pace and Kolasinac lacks defensive ability. Hence why we signed Tierney and unless Kolasinac improves defensively I can see him being replaced in the not too distant future, maybe in one of the next two windows?

As far as selling Monreal, we bank the low sum paid, plus we get his wages off our books. I assume that Tierney will be back soon, so we have 2 options at LB.

As far as the cover Montreal provided at CB, we still have: Luiz, Sokratis, Mustafi, Holding, Mavrapanos, Chambers and at a push Medley, who clearly isn't ready to play PL level yet. Whether we play 2 or 3 CB's that is ample cover. Before people say we should have sold sold Mustafi rather than Monreal, perhaps yes, but we haven't been able to do so.

Hi RG if everything goes according to plan your 6 numbers come up you live a life of luxury but! Just on the off chance your lottery numbers don't come up you need an alternative plan to pay your way until they do come up, Tierney has had injury problems for 18 months and was injured when we bought him and even when eventually he is fit he will moving up several levels from Scottish premier to English premier league and when you take all those things into account Tierney is very unknown risky basket to place all your eggs in unnecessarily.

G62 - what a peculiar comment. The medical team will have checked Tierney and I am sure he will return fit and will be an upgrade on Monreal.

01 Sep 2019 21:42:56
Is it the same medical team that checked Kim Kalstrom :-) .
Hopefully Tierney will be available by October and be a sensation but personally I'd have hedged my bets until it happened rather than replying on hope alone.
Just doesn't make sense to me especially when you consider we only received 70% of one week of Mesuts weekky wage in return for Nacho.

To be fair if you read his goodbye message doesn't he say about wanting to go back home. Guy just went about it in a more dignified way than someone else did.

G62 - surely even you are aware that we have changed the medical set up at the club since the Kalstrom episode.
It appears that Tierney will return after the International break, which would have influenced Emery’s decision to sell Monreal. We have two LB’s, which is normal, perhaps he has player in mind who can play in that position if necessary.
There will be a saving in wages which can go towards the cost of a signing in January. Perhaps we are looking for another left back as I recall Emery has been looking to sign a LB since he arrived as he didn’t seem convinced by either options. We may indeed replace Kolasinac, who lacks defensively.

Rumours of an offer for Monreal, should we sell him, as we have two left backs: Kolasinac and Tierney.

{Ed0666's Note - if Saturdays performance was anything to go by than yes

Would this seasons squad be stronger if Monreal left? If Tierney doesn't get or stay fit can we play a back 4 without Monreal? Kol is a half decent wing back but a pretty poor full back.
I see it like a Gabriel situation absolutely nothing to gain by parting company at this stage and every chance of regretting it later.

Monreal gets skinned badly by pace, but as the left sided CB, especially as a back 3, he's still a good option to have. Personally I would rather keep him than Mustafi.

28 Aug 2019 10:23:54
It’s not a question of Monreal or Mustafi.
Will Monreal play as we have Tierney and Kolasinac?
At CB we have: Luiz, Sokratis, Holding, Chambers, Mustafi, Mavrapanos and Medley.

Thats the we don't have Tierney yet lose Monreal and it leaves Kol.
RG a few seasons back you criticised Arsene for letting Gabriel go and leaving us short of CBs yet now you want to do exactly same thing at LB?
You are pretending Tierney is both fit and premier league proven and Kol doesn't struggle at left back to support your original opinion when the obvious answer is " ok in hadn't looked at it like that " then simply drop it.

I think it’s a huge silly gamble just like putting Chambers out on loan last season leaving us short at CB. Same mistake again 😉.

Much as I thought, an extremely tough match against a quality Liverpool team. Clearly an improvement on last season's corresponding fixture.
Another tough match against toot next weekend. I would like to see Torreira start.
I am in two minds whether we should start with the trio of Pepe, Lacazette and Aubameyang, as it leaves us without an attacking option on the bench.
Against Liverpool I thought our midfield was overrun until Torreira came on. Against top 6 sides, I think playing two youngsters, Guendouzi and Willock isn't ideal. Perhaps in a 4-3-3: Leno - AMN Sokratis Luiz Kolasinac- Torreira Ceballos Xhaka - Pepe Lacazette Aubameyang.

Agreed 911. We need to overrun Spurs in the midfield to starve Kane of service, and I think Torreira/ Willock/ Ceballos (or Xhaka) is the perfect way to do that.

{Ed0666's Note - Ndombele, Winks Sissoko & Le Celso will be a tough midfield to overrun mate.

27 Aug 2019 22:57:21
Ndombele may not be fit, and Lo Celso hasn't yet completed a game for Spurs I think. Torreira will be key to this game I think.

Would any Ed confirm if Robin Van Persie was offered a contract before he left arsenal and as to why he left?

{Ed047's Note - he said himself the other day on SS that he wasn’t offered a new contract with only a year left despite speaking to Wenger and Gazidis so he was ambitious, had the option to go to City or United as well as a European club and chose United.

That's a bit different to what we were lead to think at the time! Naughty naughty Arsene who I remember at the time saying " I'm confident Robin will stay "
Both RVP and Ashley Cole were portraid as the bad guys when they left but years later Arsene said the clubs contract offer to Ashley which would have left him way behind other top players " was a misunderstanding "
It seems we wanted to cash in on both but didn't want the fans to know so allowed the players to take the flack that should have been directed at the club and Arsene all along.
Not nice that.

I was a great fan of RVP as a player, but not once he opens his mouth.
In response to G62, I recall that Ashley Cole wanted the club to pay his agents fees, which the club would not do, especially as I seem to recall Cole had entered negotiations with Chelsea without the club’s consent.
Two great players that left too early, way too blearily in Cole’s case. At his peak he was one of the best LB’s in the world. RVP was older than Cole when left, if my memory serves me correctly we had seen the best of him and he only had a couple of good seasons at United, before his ability declined.

Arsene himself admitted years later that Arsenal had offered Cole a contract well below that of other players but said it was a misunderstanding, it looks like now the club simply wanted to cash in on both players but didn't have the nerve to admit it at the time.
Cashing in on Rvp and Cole while giving away contracts to the long term injured and aging Rosiky Artetta Mertesacker it's little wonder we went into decline.
