Just want to know what is meant when a club (or media source) quotes the value of a transfer?
So if the fee is say £20m and the player receives a 4 year deal of 100k pw does that mean the club has spent £40m?
Also are insurances and agents fees included and if so what are the percentages and fees respectably?
Thanks to anyone who can shed light on this for me.
Hackney Gooner
(P.S Henry can walk on water..... ED002 can swim through land!)
{Ed002's Note - What is paid would typically include:
(a) Transfer fee - the big number including any levy applied by the local FA.
(b) Tax due on the transfer fee – typically this will be VAT (at varying rates across Europe) some or all of which should be reclaimable.
(c) Agent fees – this may be to one or more agents.
(d) Tax due on the agent fees – typically this is VAT at the local rate where the agent bills from – it is not reclaimable.
(e) Intermediary fees – this may be to one or more sponging leeches.
(f) Tax due on the Intermediary fees – typically this is VAT at the local rate where the Intermediary bills from – it is not reclaimable.
(g) Signing on fee to the player (possibly including non-reclaimable VAT if the player is VAT registered)
(h) Variables and tax on variables which may or may not be reclaimable) – these would typically include legal fees, moving/relocation costs, paying up insurance costs on the player, association fees etc..
So what you see generally quoted as the transfer fee is (a).}

The Value of the transfer in the way you probably ask is the fee plus wages over the duration of the contract to the player.
Some media outlets were saying 'Man you sign RVP for £75 million!!' and things like that - imo that's just terrible spin. They did not spend that money.
They agreed a £24m fee and will have to pay hidden costs too as Ed has listed. Then what takes it to this supposed £75m is the wages per year multiplied by the duration of the contract obviously. However, the club has not SPENT that money yet. In fact a lot of the time they haven't even paid the TF fee yet.
So when you read 'City spent £80m on Yaya Toure' this is where people get confused. It's just really bad journalism and poor use of terminology and is usually done for a reason e.g. to highlight big spending etc.

Claim that Loic Remy to move QPR and not Newcastle
Believable35

Harry Redknap went to france to see him play and tried to get a meeting with him but remy said he wasn't interested in joining QPR. Redknap was quoted saying "it doesnt help that were the bottom club" so I don't think he will be joining QPR.

Arsenal made an attempt to sign Zaha but he has rejected the move and will move to Man Utd.
Wenger has now been thwarted in his attempts to sign 2 homegrown talents in Zaha and Shaw.
Wenger has made repeated warnings that he will not be coerced into making any signings.
Now that Downing is too expensive and that Zaha and Shaw won't be options, I understand Wenger may not make any deals during the Jan window at all.

Manutd have gone out from 1/4 to 1/2 and Arsenal have gone from 12/1 to 3/1 for Zaha so I wouldnt hold your breath cause may well happen. He has a lot more chance of 1st team football at Arsenal than Manutd.

This honestly does not surprise me 1 bit he has pretty much just been saying he may buy 1 or 2 just to get the fans off his back because he believes in his methods and has faith in the squad despite the fact they are not good enough, he feels that keeping walcott is a major achievement in itself.

Perhaps Arsenal should try investing in their own academy?? Hardly rocket science.

Man you have come out and said they are worried that Arsenal could steal him at the last minute.I think Zaha's people have contacted Arsenal with the attitude if you want him he's yours.COYG.

Investing in there own academy? Easier said than done mate but frimpong, Wilshire did come from academy and is one of the best youth academy's in Europe

Oh man if you're the kind of fan who is disappointed we've been priced out of a move for Downing (fair market value is at best 2m quid) then I'm glad you're moaning. Eff off

One of the best academy's in Europe?? Deluded.
Take a trip to Southampton and see how it should be done.
And, by the way, no good having a good academy if 95% of your output never gets a chance of 1st team football-the two go together.

I fail to understand why we are after Zaha, when the greatest need is for a defensive midfield player, unless its a tactic to distract United, while we sign Fellaini!

Hope we sign a defensive midfielder and a striker

We defiantly need a winger. No one in our team is a natural out there who can beat there man and swing in a great cross. Need a winger who can suddenly beat a man and put us in a dangerous position
Agree2

Fellaini isn't a defensive midfielder either....

We're probably spend all our resources on zaha only to get knocked back and wenger forgetting the vast void in the middle of the pitch
Agree0

The squad is lacking a strong midfielder with a physical presence, centre forward and a winger. I don't want to see us buy another player who can do a job out wide or down the middle, we need a specialist for each, otherwise we might as well just play Gervinho, kidding¦they can't be that bad! But we really do need a proper goal scorer and wide player.

Fellaini isn't a DM.

What about coquelin? barely gets a look in as it is?
Agree0

Fellaini might not be an out and out DM but he's got goals & passes & he's not a lightweight plus PL experience.. the fact that Diaby, when fit, is the first name on our team sheet says alot about us.. we know our main midfielder will only be available once a month if we're lucky.. We all know Diaby is not the new Viera, Fellaini could be the man

We are 21 points behind United and we are just at the half way mark. I find it laughable when Wenger says we will only buy world class players if we would have used the money wisely we could have had a few world class players. Instead we buy several average players for 10-12 million a piece. Add up what we spent on Gervinho 10.5 (that is a joke), Squillaci & Koscielny (13 million combined), Santos (6.2) Per (9 million) Arteta (10 million) equals close to 50 million we could get two world class players for that. Instead we buy average to good players some below average Gervinho and Squillaci. I think the only way we get change is for us to finish outisde the top 4, I hate to say it but 10 more years of 4-6th place finishes or change and we really start challeniging for the top in 2-3 years.

Koscielny and Arteta are great.
The signing of Gervinho and his wages could've freed up enough money to tie down van Persie/Nasri to a new deal.

Great point this is what I am saying seems baffling. I agree Arteta and Koscelny are great players but woudl i sacrifice them for Mata or Goetze I would.

We wouldn't have any squad players otherwise! We'd be playing 12 year olds on the bench!
Agree0

Exactly. It's counter productive to keep spending £10m - £12m on average players because when they don't work out as expected we have to go and spend the same on another one.
I'd much rather we spent £20m - £30m on one outstanding player each window than a multitude of average players.
Wenger would never have spent £24m on Van Persie like Man Utd did and look at the difference he's making - the difference to being potential champions or not.
P.s. and don't play them out of their best position. i.e. Walcott, Chambo, Arshavin, Podolski, Arteta
I'm so bored with Arsenal.

The trouble is that irrespective of what you pay there are no certanties how good the siging will turn out to be. That goes for a £2 million player (Michu ) or a £35 million player Carrol or a £50 million player Torres.

Our transfer policy stinks. We needed a new CB this summer and we turned done Vertonghan because Wenger could not guarantee him 1st team football. Dembele and Dempsey would have given us attacking threats from midfield.
Instead we bank £40M from RvP and Song and cross our fingers and hope people forget what happened when season ticket renewals come around.
Wenger and the board have mugged us all

Edd any intrest in James Rodriguez he's much better than zaha! {Ed002's Note - Three clubs spoke to Porto about James Rodrigues over the summer and two bids were rejected. Neither matched Porto's then valuation of the player (30M euro). The bidding clubs were Manchester United and Palermo whilst Bayern Munich looking looking carefully at Rodrigues as an alternative to Dries Mertens who they are keen to move for next summer. There may well have been enquiries from other clubs including Juventus and Napoli. It may be tough to find someone to pay the sort of fee Porto would now be looking for after negotiating a much higher release fee (45M euro) for the player. A move in the summer seems more likely than January.}

Ed - Is there any interest in Sebastian Rode, Beñat and Kevin Strootman from Arsenal?
Great work Eds.
Thanks! {Ed002's Note - Rode has attracted interest from both Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. Atletico Madrid, CSKA, Chelsea, Fenerbahce, Arsenal and Wolfsburg have shown interest in Benat. Txiki Begiristain has, as reported, an interest in taking him to Manchester City. It is beginning to look like the summer would be more likely. Manchester United and Liverpool took a look at Kevin Strootman last season but tentative enquiries were met by a reluctance to sell so soon after arriving. His performances have attracted further interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, Valencia, AC Milan, Schalke 04 and Hamburg. I expect him to move to Manchester United or Milan perhaps in January, if not in the summer.}

Hi ed who do you think arsenal will sign this January ? {Ed002's Note - I think Walcott will re-sign, perhaps Adrian Lopez or another striker, and I suspect a midfield player of the ilk of M'Vila, Benat and the more flexible Mbiwa.}
Believable4
Unbelievable16
Is Lopez any good? We are more in need of a dominant tall right sided centre back, a proper left back & a copule of tall driving tackling midfield players. Up front we have Giroud, Podolski, Walcott & Gervinho. Wilshere & Cazorla could easily play off Giroud.

Hi ed,
Can you make a list of all if the users on this site that request a list of arsenal transfers, including the likelihood of those transfers and the number of times they ask? Thanks. :)
Billybob {Ed002's Note - Sure Billybob, a pleasure. A bit off the top of my head but Arsenal have an interest in a striker still and have certainly looked at Adrian Lopez very closely indeed, Negredo might be an option, and Lewandowski & Shakhtar Donetsk's Adriano (as a cheaper option to Damiao) were enquired about. There has also been interest shown in Udinese's right back Dusan Basta. In midfield I think the club made a mistake not pushing ahead with the purchase of Wanyama in the summer but Benat and the more flexible Mbiwa have been looked at recently. There has also been a little interest in the likes of Markovic, Lars Bender, Konoplyanka and Hatem Ben Arfa but I cannot see anything coming to fruition there and it is likely more wishful thinking than anything serious. It is hard to see what interest remains in the likes of Llorente, Dragovic and Wanyama who were all previously of interest - although it is still possible the club will go back to M'Vila - but they will need to be quick. I understand that there was interest in Holtby but Spurs made their move. A very slim chance of Zaha if a deal for Walcott cannot be achieved.}

Bedford Gooner {Ed002's Note - I understand that there is a very good chance it will be Adidas. You certainly seem to be having some anger problems today but as I am conveniently hiding behind my laptop (actually my desktop), you will need to go out and find some other old man to "duff up" (or whatever your speciality is).
No doubt by now the original poster will have realised how enlightening reading the posts is for him and there was no need for me to summarise the last 6 weeks posts for him.}

Precious time? Ed i think you should be grateful people take a moment out of their precious time to write on this forum.
{Ed002's Note - Why should I be grateful for that? You can see from the bonehead's two messages the sort of posts we get - and all because I would not waste time (which I don't have much of) and effort on writing a summary of the players Arsenal may have been linked with in recent weeks.
We get streams of abuse from other sites but generally the Arsenal posters have been very good. However, it seems there are some with issues that need to be addressed.}

To Ed 002 - that's a disgraceful response you made to the first comment re "w*nker". You have to maintain a level of professionalism. If you worked for me you'd be out of a job for that response. Precious time my arse. If you can't answer genuine queries with civility you should look for another job.
{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what any of this has to do with you or with the bonehead who replied first. No doubt you make a habit of being obstructive and unhelpful and I imagine you to be a great writer of complaining letters. "Professionalism", "worked for", "another job"? You clearly have have little or no idea about this site and how it is run.}

I think you need to understand that every single day on this site, someone asks the same question (or some slight variation of) every bloody day! So yeah, use your time and read the damn page.
"Hey Ed who we signing?"
"Hey Ed any chance of Smallish McSmall signing?"
"Hey Ed, do I have chlamydia?"
I get tired of reading it, let alone answering it, and would have been a hell of a lot more rude to you once you told him to do his job...

Theres only one poster that is rude, ignorant and abusive in this exchange and its Ed 002. Disgraceful. You brought the first guys father into the debate for simply reminding you of your function and to show common courtesy to those who add to your unique visitor stats. {Ed002's Note - What do you see my "function" as being? And why would I have even the slightest interest in "unique visitor stats"? Thank god there is only a couple of you being such an embarrassment. I rather think you never quite "got" the quip about bonehead's father - it was pretty amusing even though I say so myself. I do have some proper work to do and whilst this is all very enjoyable for me and I am sure others, I would be grateful if you could get to the point where you can suck it up and move on reasonably soon.}

I quite liked the 'w**ker comment, may use it in future myself!
This is much more interesting than the game yesterday.
Oh, I shave my head but that does not make me all the other things, that remark was 'hairist' {Ed002's Note - Sorry about the hairist remark - I do appreciate that there are those who shave their heads and that does not make them lager-swilling, pot-pellied, tattooed knuckledragging oafs. I myself have the inverted mohican (natural - so save on razors).}

Thats right - "you have no idea". And to answer your question - it has everything to do with me and other posters when you make your abuse public and open to comment. That's the purpose of your site - so no point crying when the feedback is negative. {Ed002's Note - It looks rather like the other posters are not quite as concerned as you over any of this. And believe me I am not crying over any negative feedback - even if there were any. Isn't there someone double-parked nearby so you can go and complain to a Traffic Warden?}
